IN OUR COMMUNITY
Focus on: Friends of Roe Green Friends of Roe Green (FoRG) is a resident’s group which works to promote conservation of the environment and community of Roe Green and ensure residents have a voice in the decisions about the Green’s future. I recently met with six of the committee members - Pauline, Sylvia, Vivien, Jean, Annette and Joan - to find out more about the group. They are a close group of friends who have resided here a long time and truly care about the area. I enjoyed the wealth of knowledge they shared about the area, from local history to current issues, and discovering the great work they do to preserve the environment and promote community spirit. MEMBERSHIP AND SUPPORT FoRG currently has 150 members. Membership is not restricted to Roe Green and Worsley residents, but open to anyone who cares about the area. Some are from Walkden, Swinton, and the furthest lives in Culcheth. Roe Green is visited by many, especially with the children’s park and the Green itself. The group is also supported well by the local shops. An entirely voluntary organisation, they rely membership fees and grants to help achieve their aims. The Committee meets once a month to discuss ways to build on and maintain community spirit and raise funds to put back into the community. EVENTS & SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FoRG also organise social events to make use of the Green and take advantage of the wonderful surroundings to bring the local community together.
Flower arranging by Rita Bowater June 2010
Throughout the year afternoon/evening talks are held at Roe Green Church Hall and Roe Green Cricket Club. They have varied topics and guest speakers, such as “Tea & Memories” where residents brought in photos and shared stories and memories, and Flower Arranging. Voluntary organisations such as RNLI and RSPB also give talks. All events are popular and well attended. RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS FoRG are behind many developments in the area. Examples include:l RHS Britain In Bloom “Neighbourhood Award” given for the year-round planting in Roe Green. We now have 12 square planters, 12 oblong planters, 15 hay baskets, and a wild flower garden at the entrance to woods. l 5 blue plaques commemorating past residents and historic buildings in Roe Green. A current project is to improve the drainage of the Green and make it a more useable area. Committee members also lobby for improvements such as the clearance of dead trees and recently, the cleaning up of graffiti. FoRG would like to thank the members and volunteers for all their help, and are always looking for new and younger members. If you are interested in joining, or finding out more, contact Pauline Ogden - 0161 790 3166 http://friendsofroegreen.org

Worsley Property View Over the last two years UK house prices have plummeted, unexpectedly risen in 2009 and now appears to be slowing down again. Is this the same for Worsley? OUTLOOK FOR THE UK HOUSING MARKET Overall, UK house prices have risen in 2010 against 2009, but this now seems to be stabilising. The year-on-year increase in house prices peaked at 6.9% in April, but fell to 4.9% in the three months to July. The view from both the Halifax and Nationwide is that prices will flatten out by December 2010 and broadly be unchanged over 2010 as a whole. Some predict house prices to fall again in 2011... due to the simple fact that house prices are still too expensive. WORSLEY STATISTICS Obtaining reliable trends on Worsley alone is difficult as it is such a small sample. Data taken from www.home.co.uk indicate in August, the asking price of houses in Worsley have dropped by around 20% from August 2009. The exception being Detached houses which have increased by 5% with an average asking price of £559k. Properties which are currently up for sale, the average number of days on the market is 180days. Semi’s being on for the shortest time at 154 days to Flats and Terraced houses being the longest at c.230days. Terraced cottages on Greenleach Lane, once selling for over £200k are now selling for between £165k (Mar10) and £183k (May10). Popular detached houses on Crossfield Drive seem to be holding their prices, selling this year between £390 and £440k. Three sold between February and May, which is the most activity here in one year for over a decade. Looking at the actual number of house sales, activity has definitely picked up in 2010.
FOR A LOCAL EXPERT OPINION we asked Fiona Beirne, MD of Urban Bases to comment on the Worsley market. Urban Bases has been established for over 10 years, and specialise in residential sales and lettings. “Things are better than they were. Well, when I say ‘better’ I mean people are now more realistic and acceptable to the down turn in house prices. The Housing Market collapsed in November 07. Since then, prices have been steadily dropping by 9-20%, and even greater for new builds. That decrease in equity invariably leads to a shortfall on deposits for purchasers. No deposit, no move! The Banks now want a 20% deposit. On a property of £100k, a first time buyer would need £20k in their back pocket (parents). Even the best of parents would find £20k a stretch. Alas, It’s time to save, which is a strange trait in today’s society but maybe not a bad one. As we say to all our clients, “Houses are still exchanging hands, what you lose on one you gain on the other, it’s academic, it’s a global downturn, wherever you live, prices have fallen.” Houses are generally more realistically priced now. Some, on the market for over 2 years, are over-priced. It takes longer to complete a sale - once it was 48hrs for an offer and 3 weeks to complete once accepted. Now it’s anywhere between 3 weeks to 6 months with all the bank checks and tighter lending regulations. Advice to anyone who wishes to move, but lack required deposits? – Consider renting. We have seen a dramatic increase in the rental market over the last 2 years, a European trend we believe is here to stay. The demographics of people who rent have also changed. More and more families are choosing to rent their current home, which in turn allows them the freedom to move and rent a new home. Any other advice for the house hunter? – Check the Energy Performance Certificate. Energy cost have risen by 33% in the last year and predicted to rise again early next year.”

Is your memory letting you down? Does
your brain feel “foggy? Or do you just need to perform to your best for a work or college assignment? Here are seven everyday tips to stimulate your brain.
1
EXERCISE!
Get out for a brisk walk, go to the gym or dance around the house to your favourite music. Exercise generates blood flow to the brain which has the immediate effect of improving concentration and productivity. Regular exercise stimulates the intricate working parts of the brain, creating plumper, healthier, better connected brain cells. Long term, exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia.
2
FEED THE BRAIN
Nourish your brain with the foods that help your concentration and memory: Wholegrain foods like wholemeal bread and pasta, wheatbran, cereals and brown rice help keep your blood sugar levels stable so you avoid brain fog, while the vitamins B12 and B6 in them aid memory. Omega 3s in oily fish, nuts and seeds are essential to the health of the nervous system, while the iodine in fish aids mental clarity. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of zinc which enhances memory and thinking skills. Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, tomatoes and green tea help protect neurons against damage.
3
HYDRATE YOUR MIND
Your brain is 60% water and if it's not hydrated, it can't perform properly. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day.
4
SPICE IT UP
5
Zzzz’s
6
READ
7
MEDITATE
Raid the herb and spice rack. Rosemary is believed to protect the brain from free radical damage and the general effects of ageing. Cinnamon, turmeric, basil, oregano, thyme and sage can all protect your brain from inflammation so look for ways to add these herbs and spices to your everyday food
Get enough sleep. Science shows that people who sleep for 7 hours exhibit significantly more brain activity than those who don't.
Replace passive TV watching with active reading. Reading is only good for your brain when it involves storing and retrieving information, so at the end of each chapter recall what you've read and summarise it briefly in you mind. Better still, join a reading group.
Start by closing your eyes then consciously tense up your muscles and relax them. Pay attention to your breathing and when your mind wanders, bring it back to your breathing. Five or ten minutes of this will usually relax you, clear your mind and leave you better prepared for mental tasks.

Home Personal Training What’s it all about? by Lisa Foley (Lisa Foley Fitness) Home personal training (PT) is on the rise! Until the early 'noughties' the main choices to get fit were the gym, exercise classes or to pound the streets. The fitness world has progressed quickly as has our need for convenience and home PT is now the preferred choice of many. So why are more people choosing home PT? Well, plenty of us are daunted by the gym and can find it impersonal. You're not alone if you check your statement to see your monthly gym subscription, only to chastise yourself for not having visited recently! Don't get me wrong, everyone is different but more and more people are looking for a time-effective, motivational way to shed the inches and home PT ticks the boxes.
Unlike the gym, PT provides a holistic
approach to health and fitness. A Trainer 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP
will provide structured nutritional guidance, as well as a progressive exercise programme adapted to any location e.g. garden, hotel room etc... and no matter what your excuses, your trainer will still be knocking on your door! No driving time, no traffic queues, just an enthusiastic trainer on your doorstep and within an hour you can be back into the swing of life at home! What to look for in a home training company:n On the website what comes across- do they sound professional, experienced, friendly? n What qualifications do they have besides PT? Have they been active in their own professional development? n n n

LOCAL HISTORY
Licensed for Wine ...and Spirits? Worsley Old Hall, is over four hundred years old and is infamously haunted by numerous ghosts.... Any place with a bit of history behind it is sure to have a healthy population of ghosts, so our district is no exception. Nearby Wardley, now part of Swinton, has Wardley Hall, the official residence of the Catholic Bishop of Salford. Known to the Locals as “Skull Hall”, Wardley is the home of a famous relic - the head of St. Ambrose Barlow, a local cleric who became a religious casualty of the Reformation, executed for preaching the old faith. That is remarkable enough, but even more so is the fact that the skull has been known to take leave on a number of occasions, disappear (go skull-about), only to return after a period and take up its former position. However, when it comes to value in spook terms, Worsley Old Hall, almost 500 years old and now a restaurant, really puts on a show. Its best known resident was, of course, the famous Duke of Bridgewater, who commissioned the building of the first canal in the land, but it is not he whom we look to for haunting. Rather it is his distant antecedents, Sir Richard Brereton and his wife Lady Dorothy, who are the culprits. In 1570, Sir Richard inherited Worsley and in 1572 he married Dorothy Egerton who was only 12 years old at the time (in those days of low life-expectancy it was customary to marry young). When Dorothy was 16 years old she sadly lost their only child, a miscarriage apparently caused by her being frightened by a tame bear which had broken loose in the grounds of the Hall, but she recovered. 18

In 1598, after 26 years of happy marriage, Sir Richard died and Dorothy inherited Worsley and continued to live at her beloved Hall. She arranged to have her husband and baby laid to rest at the Church of Our Lady the Virgin in Eccles in a splendid tomb. In 1604, Dorothy, still a relatively young woman of 44, married Sir Peter Legh of Lyme Hall in Cheshire and became step-mother to this widower's children. They divided their time between the two estates and had a long and happy marriage until, in 1636, Sir Peter died. Now a respected dowager of 76 years, an extraordinary age for those times, Dorothy returned to spend her last years at Worsley Hall. There were to be only another three years of life left to her before she died of pneumonia as a result of an accident. Wearing her favourite green dress, cut in the voluminous style of the day, she was descending the main staircase of the Hall when she tripped and tumbled to the foot of the stairs. Perhaps a fracture and shock did the rest, for, taken to her bed, she died within days. In her Will Lady Dorothy stipulated that she should join her first husband, Sir Richard and their child, in the tomb at Eccles Church and there they rest to this day. In Tudor ruffs, Sir Richard in doublet and hose, Lady Dorothy in a gown, their baby in a nursery robe, they dream on… Visit our new website www.onourdoorstep.co.uk

sacrifice as its price. After much negotiation it seemed that the ghost was bluffing, for it settled for a chicken as the price of taking up a more friendly form in future - that of a swallow.
And there the tale should rest - but not so, for the hapless folk of Worsley. Things emphatically started to go bump in the night! Possibly the reason was that Sir Richard and Dorothy were having a tiff in the afterlife. He might have been peeved at her second marriage, she might have been nagging him to fix the heavenly gates. Whatever the reason, the villagers of Worsley began to suffer the backlash of a very irritable spook. Sir Richard took to frightening the nervous on dark nights, throwing weighty objects about, causing livestock to abort and crops to fail, and generally disturbing the rural peace. Something had to be done - an exorcism no less and seven priests were summoned for the job. A lesser number had been tried but Sir Richard was a ghost with stamina. The ceremony proceeded and battle with the spirit joined for many hours until, finally he was brought to bay on Chat Moss. All the priests' pleadings for the ghost to desist were in vain, for it demanded a human
Meanwhile, back at the Hall, Lady Dorothy began to put in an appearance. Wearing her signature green dress, she started to wander the corridors and rooms, invariably ending her promenades at the head of the staircase and then taking the tumble. But, always a kindly lady, she never bothered anyone (beyond severe palpitations!) and she was left to her own devices. She is still around today, as successive cleaners of the Hall under its different tenancies and even present day restaurant staff, will attest. In 1975 a cleaner stated that she felt that her body was “possessed” and had an awareness that she was wearing a green gown. In this state and against her will, she felt impelled to go to the head of the staircase and reached this point before she could break the spell. The dress, however, continued to spectrally tumble down to the foot of the stairs… As for Sir Richard, the story goes that in a chilly December, a local guide was relating the history of the Hall, of Sir Richard and the swallow, to some foreign tourists. He was scoffing at the tale, when one of the company pointed to the sky and enquired: “What bird might that be”? In the sky a lone bird soared above the Hall in the wintry skies … it was a swallow. Written by John Kirwin
The grounds of Worsley Old Hall were designated a conservation area in 1982 to protect the setting of Worsley Old Hall, a Grade II listed building, and to protect the historical character of the area in general. The conservation area has within its boundary Worsley Old Hall and the former Worsley Old Hall Farm, now altered and extended as The Marriott Hotel. www.salford.gov.uk/conworsleyoh ON OUR DOORSTEP 19

Focus on: Milan Italian Restaurant in the heart of Worsley Milan first opened in Worsley in 2002. It has recently undergone a full refurbishment and re-opened it’s doors in July 2010. THE REFURBISHMENT If you visited Milan before the refurbishment, you will be amazed at the change. In addition to the stylish new decor and chic furnishings, the layout feels spacious and inviting. It now has a bigger bar area for customers to relax and enjoy pre-dinner drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed, but buzzy - a great place to catch up with friends. A NEW MENU Not only has the interior changed, but there are 25 new dishes on the menu to sample, and a completely new wine list. Head Chef, Bruno de Ferrera, who started with Milan as a Pasta Chef five years ago, has revamped the menu to include some of the favourites from the traditional menu, plus new contemporary Italian dishes. BRUNO’S FAVOURITE DISHES Bruno talks about his signature dishes:-
From the original traditional menu: L’agnello is his firm favourite. A slow cooked lamb, roasted for 6-7 hours in the oven, served with Mediterranean vegetables, potatoes and a red wine and rosemary jus. From the new dishes: Milan Fillettinos strips of spicy beef fillet, marinated in a blend of olive oil, chilli, garlic, onions, peppers and served on a bed of crushed potatoes. This can be served as a starter or main course. So you can try both of these! From the dessert menu, the one which has proved the most popular so far is the New York cheesecake. This is made on site by the Senior Chef who is from New York himself. If you are tempted by these authentic dishes, book a table and try the new Milan for yourself!

The Beauty Garden... tried and tested
A little retreat on the edge of Worsley, where you can afford to be pampered The Beauty Garden, is a new salon on Walkden Road. It first opened in August 2009, and has steadily increased in popularity with a loyal client base who return for regular treatments. The design and standard of decor rivals a good hotel spa. Tastefully decorated and furnished in creams, browns, natural dark woods, with touches of green. Beth, who opened the salon, and Zoe her senior therapist, are both very professional, friendly and welcoming. We sampled their showcase treatments:BIO SCULPTURE NAIL TREATMENT Bio Sculpture Gel, is a treatment applied as a coating to your own nails. It’s a great alternative to acrylics - you can have the glossy groomed look without damaging your nails. Available in a wide range of colours - from french manicure to deep purples and shimmery pinks. The hour’s treatment involves shaping the nails and tidying the cuticles. Then a clear gel is applied to give natural strength and help repair and protect them. The colour is then applied and finally S-gel was painted over the top to build the upper arch and ensure a smooth and even finish. Louise’s verdict: “My nails looked perfectly manicured and felt strong. I loved the fact they were my natural nails with no extensions. As my nails grow they can be infilled and the colour changed. This is expected to be every 3-4 weeks on fingernails and longer on toes. I was so pleased that I booked to have my toe nails Bio Sculptured too”.
#
MINI FACIAL, BACK, NECK & SHOULDERS MASSAGE WITH HOT STONES This treatment begins with an express facial, consisting of a cleanse, deep cleanse, face shoulders and neck massage, facial scrub, mask and a choice of hand or foot massage whilst the mask was on, which is a bonus. Once the mask is removed, any blocked pores are cleared and you finish with a tone and moisturise. Dermalogica products are used throughout. For the next 35 mins you are treated to a back, shoulders and neck massage, firstly with just hands and then with hot stones. Heat from hot stones help to relax the muscles more. It then ends with a hot towel placed on your back and any excess oils are wiped off. The verdict: This was a unique session, packing a lot into one hour and actually felt like much longer. My face looked brighter, smoother and fresher. I definitely looked revived. Zoe was very competent and confident, using a good range of gentle relaxing soft movements and firmer ones to make you feel like you had been worked on. She could feel the areas of tension, and where I have back problems and worked on these more. At the time this treatment was on promotion at £28 - excellent value and well worth a visit! UNIVERSAL CONTOURWRAP Another showcase treatment at The Beauty Garden - a guaranteed inch loss wrap. It purports to be the only scientifically proven inch-loss wrap. Trina, a client from Ellenbrook, said she lost a total of 10 inches over different areas of the body. The benefit lasts up to 30 days if you follow a sensible diet. Hints and Tips
To make the panacotta Cut your vanilla pod in half length ways and add to a saucepan with the cream and sugar. Stir over a gentle heat and before it boils, reduce the heat and then simmer for 2 mins. Remove from the heat. Soak the gelatin in cold water until it becomes soft, then squeeze out any excess water and add to the hot cream liquid. Stir until dissolved. Pour the mixture into 4 x 125ml moulds and refrigerate until set. When ready to serve, dip the moulds into hot water for a few seconds and then turn the moulds over onto your serving plate. Decorate cupcakes (bought or home-made) and make these fab Spider cakes for Halloween with your kids. You will need:1. Unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into lengths to make dangly legs. Stick 8 into the top of each cake, making small cuts with the tip of a sharp knife so they push in really securely. 2. Spoon chocolate spread on top and spread lightly within the legs to make a round spider's body. Now cut the Allsorts to make eyes and the red bootlaces to make mouths, then stick them onto the cakes and dot on the icing to make eyeballs. Small Business Guide to:
Word-of-Mouth Marketing
Everyone knows about it, but hardly anyone does it well What if there were a way to build your business, year in and year out, regardless of fluctuations in the economy or the activities of your competition? Well, there is. It's called “Word-of-Mouth. Practically every business person knows how important word-of-mouth marketing is, yet almost no-one truly understands how to build their business through it. The major advantage of word-of-mouth is that people trust the recommendations of others and hold that in much higher regard than anything a company could ever say. It's not just about good customer service. Unfortunately, people are more likely to talk about your business when they are unhappy than when they are satisfied. Good customer service can reduce "negative" word-of-mouth but rarely on it's own will it prompt a happy customer to talk about you. Below are the three most important things you can do to start the process of increasing business through word-of-mouth. 1. Diversify your networks If you want to build your business through word-of-mouth, you have to be visible and active in the community by participating in various networking groups and/or professional associations.
2. Develop your Contact Spheres Contact Spheres are businesses that are compatible and non-competitive to you. For example: painters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and interior designers. All of these have clients with overlapping similar needs. They can all work with, and refer each other easily. Another good example is what I call the wedding mafia: a florist, a photographer, a travel agent and a jeweller. A referral for one of them becomes a referral for all of them. You should immediately determine which professions fit within your Contact Spheres and start developing relationships with them. 3. Foster relationships with your clients. Word-of-mouth is more about farming than it is about hunting. Building your business through word-of-mouth is about cultivating relationships with people who get to know you and trust you. People do business with people they have confidence in. One of the most important things I've learned in the past two decades is this: It's not what you know, or who you know. It's how well you know them that counts. John Betton - Business for Breakfast Business Networking 0845 4811 929 or 07817 642017
