Looking for Exceptional Care for Your Loved One?

Home Instead Salford & Worsley Sets the Standard with Another ‘Outstanding’ Rating!

Susan Robinson, founder and owner of Home Instead Salford, started the branch in February 2016 with the clear goal of providing top-tier home care for older adults in the area. Just a year after opening, the branch was inspected by the CQC and received its first ‘Outstanding’ rating. In a sector where only about 3% of home care providers in the UK achieve this distinction, this was no small feat. More than six years later, in October 2023, Home Instead Salford again received an ‘Outstanding’ rating - an achievement that highlights the consistency of its service and dedication.

What defines a CQC ‘Outstanding’ rating? The CQC assesses five core areas: care must be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. For a provider to be rated ‘Outstanding,’ it must exceed expectations in all these areas, demonstrating exceptional dedication to Client welfare, continuity of service and innovative approaches that truly enhance Clients' quality of life.

When asked how Home Instead Salford & Worsley consistently meets these high standards, Susan credits her team of “exceptional individuals” who all share the same goal to make life as enjoyable and dignified as possible for Clients, even in their later years. She highlights how each Care Professional is genuinely invested in providing the best experience for Clients, which includes spending a minimum of one hour with each client per visit. This approach ensures that care professionals have time to talk, understand individual needs and foster meaningful relationships - critical factors in enhancing mental and emotional well-being.

“Our goal is to exceed expectations,” says Susan. “We don’t just look after our Clients; we care about them. We understand the importance of time, conversation and connection.” This approach, which goes beyond routine care, aligns with Home Instead’s commitment to companionship, personal care, home help, respite and holiday care, and specialised dementia and end-of-life care.

Another cornerstone of Home Instead Salford’s community-oriented approach is its weekly ‘Cuppa and Company’ event, held every Thursday morning at All Saints Church in Wardley, 10.30am – 12 noon. Here, Salford residents over 60 can enjoy tea, coffee, cake

and conversation, along with activities like dominoes and knitting. This free event, with guest speakers and activity coordinators, provides a warm, welcoming space for Salford elders to socialise, offering the simple joys of companionship that are central to Home Instead’s philosophy.

Registered Care Manager Nicky Leack emphasises that this culture of openness extends to potential Clients and their families, who are encouraged to visit the office - no appointment necessary. “The care maze can be overwhelming,” Nicky notes. “We want families to feel supported, to meet our team and see for themselves the people who might become a part of their lives.” For those who stop by, Bobbi, the office dog, often provides a bit of added comfort. She’s there as a listening ear and a friendly presence, embodying the warmth and community spirit that Home Instead strives to foster.

In a world where elder care often lacks a personal touch, Home Instead Salford & Worsley has set a high bar for what truly outstanding care looks like. By prioritising not only safety and efficiency, but also companionship, community and connection, Susan and her team have created a haven where elders can find the quality of care and kindness they deserve.

Connect with Home Instead Salford & Worsley todaywhere compassion, community and excellence in adult care are our hallmarks. Visit us, join our ‘Cuppa and Company’ event, or call to learn how we can support your family."

Amid the hustle and bustle of Salford, there exists a crisis silently engulfing the community - a crisis that often goes unspoken. What crisis, you ask? The alarming shortage of foster carers, an issue that is not getting the attention it desperately needs.

It's time to shine a light on this pressing matter through the lens of ‘Foster Families’, a passionate team of experienced foster parents in Salford dedicated to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children in need of love and stability. With each passing day, the number of children entering the care system grows, while the number of available foster homes diminishes; the sense of urgency is real.

‘Foster Families’ has been set up by a group of Foster Parents in Salford who dearly love the children they

Fostering: Make a diference to the lives of vulnererable children

care for and want to encourage more people to come forward to provide these much-needed loving and safe homes.

“Being a Foster Parent has been the best decision of our lives. Providing love and a safe nurturing family home for a vulnerable child where they can thrive is the greatest honour.”

Starting a career as a Foster Parent is a scary idea for many and the ‘Foster Families’ team is here to help people explore whether fostering is for them in a confidential and honest environment.

Transforming the Future for Children with Cancer

Even with advances in research, sadly, 1 in 5 children still won’t survive cancer, which remains the biggest killer in the UK. For those who do survive, the battle continues: 60% face life-altering disabilities caused by aggressive treatments that damage their organs and bones. These "late effects" can include hearing loss, secondary cancers, infertility, and heart and lung issues, profoundly affecting education, employability and mental health.

Currently, around 35,000 childhood cancer survivors in the UK live with these challenges, yet only 3.5% of total cancer research funding in the UK is directed towards childhood cancer. At KidsCan, we are determined to change this reality. KidsCan has invested over half a million pounds in groundbreaking research into the rarest childhood cancers, dedicated to developing new and improved treatments.

KidsCan's researchers across the UK are on a mission to enhance survival rates and eliminate the damage caused by current therapies. With your support, we aim to create a world where every child diagnosed with cancer not only survives but thrives.

Join our vital mission - whether by volunteering, becoming a corporate sponsor, taking on a fundraising challenge, or spreading the word. Together, we can make a difference. To find out how you can help: Visit www.kidscan.org.uk Email info@kidscan.org.uk Tel 0161 295 3864

Art: The Cure for my Sunday Night Blues

In September I embarked on a new adventure and joined an Art course run by Art Table UK.

I wanted to mix up my weekly routine and do something totally absorbing that would transport me away from the stresses of daily life.

The course entailed 3-hour sessions, every Monday for 13 weeks, exploring a wide range of art techniques from print making to painting.

I am not an artist - I don’t draw or paint at home, but this was suitable for beginners, as well as experienced, so I braved it and signed up!

Learning to let go...

I love learning something new and stimulating the old grey matter, and there was plenty to learn. Initially, I got quite stressed and frustrated as I couldn’t translate what I saw onto paper and I felt like everything was disastrous! Yes, it was totally absorbing and the time passed very quickly, but it wasn’t relaxing like I had envisaged.

I quickly had to try and learn to let go of wanting to create “picture-perfect” pieces, and try to enjoy the process and experimenting.

When you see how differently everyone interprets what we do, the variety of styles which all look amazing, you realise whatever you produce, it’s “ok”. It’s your own unique piece!

My son, who is studying A-Level Art and is just brilliant, was very encouraging and thought whatever I produced was great. He told me not to get hung up on producing a “replica”, but just to capture the “essence” of the subject. He rightly reminded me that no-one sees your reference material so can’t make a direct comparison anyway.

What I loved the most...

n Taking myself out of my comfort zone and trying something new - I even tried a life drawing class!

n Meeting a group of warm and supportive people and making new friends.

n Sometimes feeling like a kid at school with freedom to play and explore, in particular with the print making sessions.

n Finally achieving and completing something I was happy with (bunny, top left!).

n Beating those Sunday Blues! No longer having that dreaded feeling of starting another week of the same old routine revolving around domestics, work and food shopping!

Art classes have been a great form of self-therapy and I did something creative that I’d never make time for at home. It’s 100% good for the soul and I can’t recommend it enough.

It doesn’t have to be Art, but why not challenge yourself to try a new hobby in 2025?

MUSTARD TREE CHARITY CALLS

Salford charity Mustard Tree offers free collections of second-hand furniture and white goods to help stock its community shops.

For 30 years the charity has created opportunities for people in financial hardship to improve economic wellbeing and find settled homes - combatting poverty, preventing homelessness and empowering people to help themselves.

Across its three hubs in Eccles, Little Hulton and Ancoats, Mustard Tree helps furnish hundreds of new tenancies each year, using donated furniture from Greater Manchester residents.

Donated items are either sold at low-cost through the community shops, or gifted through a furniture voucher scheme - helping to make a house a

home for individuals and families coming out of homelessness and into settled homes.

Mustard Tree has three vans traveling across Salford and Manchester to collect large furniture items such as sofas, wardrobes and cabinets - from people and businesses who have items to donate. Other items such as clothing, electricals and kitchenware can be dropped into any of its three hubs during opening times.

Q The Ellesmere Polka

ueen Victoria and Prince Albert were accomplished pianists and singers, and Felix Mendelssohn became their musical hero. They were very content to sit at a piano and play duets. Albert was an enthusiastic follower of Mendelssohn’s music and it was he who introduced the Queen to Felix’s works for piano and voice. The composer first met the Prince on 14 June 1842, hand delivering a letter from Albert’s cousin, Frederick William IV of Prussia. He was then invited to Buckingham Palace the following evening to meet the Queen. A contemporary eyewitness reports that the “royals were feeling quite nervous about meeting their musical hero, and Mendelssohn apparently felt the same way.”

Victoria wrote this fascinating account of her first encounter with Mendelssohn in her journal for 16 June 1842, Buckingham Palace: “After dinner came Mendelssohn, whose acquaintance I was so anxious to make. Albert had already seen him the other morning. He is short, dark, & Jewish looking, delicate, with a fine intellectual forehead. I should say he must be about 35 or 6. He is very pleasing & modest.”

Thereafter, he made several visits to Buckingham Palace in London where he and the royals struck up a close friendship based on their mutual love of music and the arts. In May 1847, she recalled: “We had the great treat of hearing Mendelssohn play. He stayed an hour with us, playing some new compositions, with that indescribably beautiful touch of his. I also sang 3 of his songs, which seemed to please him.”

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Worsley 9-11 October 1851, and stayed with the Earl and Countess of Ellesmere at Worsley New Hall. They were accompanied by the Duke of Wellington, who was a close friend of the Earl. On both of the evenings the Earl entertained a small number of guests in honour of Her Majesty. As part of the celebration, a special piece of music was commissioned. Because of her great affection for German composers, Heinrich Blümer was invited to compose a piece, entitled The Ellesmere Polka. It would appear that it was played just the once and then disappeared into the borough’s archives. Curiously, his name does not feature in any list of German composers!

In September 2012, the music was found and recorded by Dr. Robin Dewhurst, of the University of Salford, and was first played at an exhibition at MediaCityUK.

The piece can be heard online by visiting: st-marks-graveyard.org/media, or st-marks-graveyard.org, where you will see the whole site, and look for Archive: Media.

Smart Decluttering & Reorganising Tips for 2025

Starting the year with a focus on organisation can make your home feel more functional and welcoming. With years of experience creating custom storage solutions, Lisa at Spoke Interiors has perfected the art of giving everything its place, making it easier for families to enjoy a clutter-free, beautifully organised home, and shares her advice for 2025.

Creating Effective Storage Solutions to Declutter Your Space

A clutter-free home brings clarity and calm. Efficient storage design is the foundation of an organized and functional space. Here are a few tips for decluttering your home effectively:

1) Purge First: Before adding storage, evaluate your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t need. Keeping only the essentials makes it easier to decide what storage solutions will work best.

2) Choose Multi-Functional Furniture: Opt for furniture with built-in storage, such as ottomans, coffee tables with drawers, or beds with under-bed storage. These pieces help reduce clutter while offering additional storage.

3) Use Vertical Space: Install tall shelves, wall hooks or pegboards to maximize vertical areas. This frees up floor space and keeps everyday items accessible.

4) Optimise Wardrobes and Cabinets: Use dividers, drawers and organisers in wardrobes and cabinets to compartmentalise items, making it easier to keep everything neat and tidy.

In 2024, we saw a surge in clients requesting boot rooms - these spaces serve as practical hubs that keep homes organized and clutter-free and are becoming essential, especially for busy families. In 2025, we’re excited to focus on creating more of these spaces for local families.

About Spoke Interiors

Spoke Interiors is a family-run business with deep roots in design and craftsmanship.

Winter Proof Your Home

Now is the perfect time to winter proof your home; ensuring heat doesn’t escape, or water get in. Winter can see our homes experience the most extreme weather of the year, but by taking a few simple steps, you can save money on expensive energy or repair bills.

Inside your home

Stop heat escaping - energy is one of the biggest household expenses, and even with well insulated walls, loft, double glazed doors and window, a few simple extra actions can save energy and money.

Lag Pipes: By insulating your hot water pipes you can take an inexpensive step to reduce energy loss for just a few pounds.

Hot Water Jacket: If you have an immersion heater, put a jacket on it. Even if it has one consider getting a thicker one – it could save over £20 per year.

Draft Excluders: Make sure all external doors have draft excluders all around them, and if you spend most of your time in one room, a simple bought or homemade ‘sausage’ can keep out drafts, retain heat and make you feel more comfortable.

Professional Insulation: A worthwhile investment that will be recouped in no time, especially loft and wall insulation. Grants are available depending on your circumstances and is well worth investigating.

Radiators: Bleed all your radiators - you can easily buy a cheap bleeding tool. Reduce energy loss by placing reflective material behind radiators and remove objects in front of them that block the heat.

Smart Thermostat: Consider fitting this invaluable gadget - it’s a nifty piece of kit that connects your

heating system to the internet, allowing you to control your heating from your smartphone or tablet. Turn the heating on or off, and change the temperature as needed - it could save you pounds!

Windows: If your windows are deteriorating, get them repaired or have new double glazing installed.

Lastly, have a professional service your central heating and make sure any chimneys are swept.

Outside your home

Pipes and Taps: Insulate any outside pipes or taps. Gutters and Drains: If you can’t do it yourself get a professional to clean your gutters and unblock drains.

Roof and Chimney: Get a professional to check the highest parts of your home as these are the most exposed to the weather. Avoid expensive leaks and water damage.

Trees: Check and cut back any trees or branches that could potentially damage your home in a storm.

Outside Buildings and Furniture: Check sheds and greenhouses for loose doors or windows and check their roofs. Move outside furniture into safe storage – in strong winds they could blow away.

Security: With the long dark nights, think about investing in a modern security system - a smart doorbell, an alarm system and cameras perhaps?

With a little research and forward planning, winter proofing your home need not cost the earth, but it could save you money in the long run and make your home cosy and safe.

Winding down for Winter

As we took our last harvest items and the winter gloom loomed, we decided to meet again before Christmas, keep our options open for a gathering so if the sun came out for long enough, we could see what the plot looked like in the dry.

We planted our winter onions, experimenting with a crop in the polytunnel and Charlie, our most adventurous member, gathered the garlic cloves to try growing them in his greenhouse at home. I agreed to look after the Scotch Bonnets until they could be re-homed with Brian who leads the Mental Health Group, as they are too hot for my wife Jackie and her chilli recipe. The Pineapple plants and the succulents will fend for themselves in the polytunnel until spring.

The last thing was to plant the various spring bulbs in the community garden. Jackie laboured to get all 60 in, neatly placed for the best display. The bulk of the other plants in that area are perennials so ‘here’s to spring’!

The soggy weather we have suffered has left the cancer support plot very muddy - my scooter keeps getting bogged down so I am looking for some paving flags to keep me from sinking too far. Jackie says it’s my weight, not the mud, that’s the problem!

We’ve ordered next year’s seeds and will be trying some new plantings. For the moment our onion experiment is going well with more shoots than we had expected and our lettuce seedlings are doing well, although winter may not be quite the time for salads - fried lettuce doesn’t really appeal even though roasted beetroot is a firm favourite.

Sometimes we wonder what kind of people steal from allotments - they have very strange tastes. One tenant has lost a chainsaw and a container of washing-up liquid along with a camping stove. An odd combination, but why steal a grass trimmer without its battery? - artificial intelligence may be at play, or lack of any intelligence at all, perhaps!!

Jackie had an interesting day at the former Reebok stadium where she was presented with a very attractive framed certificate for her efforts in re-forming the derelict community garden. The RHS made the presentation in recognition of her efforts in the ‘Britain in Bloom’ competition. With about 500 people in the audience, she received the highest award of Grade 5 and it was endorsed ‘outstanding’ by the judges.

We’ll report later, in the new year, about our experimental adventures and keep our fingers crossed for a drier winter and spring. The summer crops don’t like the wet stuff too much and a bit of sun on our backs keeps our plotting spirits bubbling along.

Top 4 Myths about Lasting Powers of Attorney - Busted!

At Widdows Pilling, we often hear misconceptions about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) that prevent people from taking this crucial step in planning for their future. An LPA lets you choose someone you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so. Here, we’re busting common myths to show why setting up an LPA with Widdows Pilling is one of the best choices you can make.

Myth 1: “I’m too young to need an LPA.”

Fact: LPAs aren’t just for older adults. Accidents, illness, or sudden life changes can happen at any age. Not having an LPA when you need it is like trying to get car insurance at the moment of impact - too late! Setting one up now with Widdows Pilling ensures your finances, health, and welfare are in the hands of someone you trust, with your wishes clearly documented.

Myth 2: “My spouse or family will make decisions for me if I can’t.”

Fact: Family members don’t automatically have the right to make decisions on your behalf. Without an LPA, they’d need to apply to the Court of Protection - a lengthy and costly process. Setting up an LPA with us ensures no delays or added stress for your loved ones when it matters most.

Myth 3: “LPAs are only for people who lack mental capacity.”

Fact: An LPA must be set up while you still have mental capacity; it only takes effect if you later lose the ability to make decisions. With Widdows Pilling, we ensure your LPA is prepared and legally valid, ready to protect your interests if it’s ever needed.

Myth 4: “LPAs are only for financial matters.”

Fact: There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs and Health and Welfare. The Health and Welfare LPA allows your attorney to make decisions about your medical care, living arrangements, and well-being. Without both, your family may be limited in the help they can provide. Widdows Pilling ensures your LPAs cover all aspects of your future needs.

Setting up an LPA is a practical step that supports you and gives peace of mind to your family. At Widdows Pilling, we make the process simple and ensure your LPA is tailored to protect your wishes. Contact us today to learn how an LPA can benefit you and your loved ones.

Winter Warmer

Sweet Potato and Cauli Coconut Curry

Ingredients

• 500g sweet potatoes, scrubbed

• Vegetable oil

• 1 large cauliflower

• 1 onion, chopped

• Thumb-sized piece of peeled root ginger

• 2 red chillies

• 5 garlic cloves

• 2 tsp ground cumin

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp ground turmeric

• 1 x 400g tin full-fat coconut milk

• 1 x 30g pack flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked

Infused with spices, this is a delicious creamy curry for a cold winter evening. It’s also perfect for Veganuary month!

Preparation and cooking time combined: 35-40 minutes | Serves: 4

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas 7.

2. Chop the unpeeled sweet potatoes into 2cm cubes. Toss in a bowl with a tablespoon of oil then season and place into a large baking tray. Roast for 10 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the cauliflower. Remove the outer leaves and cut the head into florets. Add these to the tray with another tablespoon of oil

and a little more seasoning. Toss the veg to mix then roast the cauli with the sweet potato for another 15 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

4. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a frying pan then fry the chopped onion for 5 minutes or until translucent.

5. Deseed the chillies then thinly slice, and finely chop the ginger and garlic. Add these to the pan along with the spices and cook for 2 minutes.

6. Add the coconut milk, 200ml of water and season to taste. Simmer gently for 10 minutes.

7. Remove the roasted sweet potato and cauliflower from the oven and stir the roasted vegetables into the curry sauce. Simmer for 3-4 minutes, then throw in the parsley. Adjust the seasoning to taste then serve the curry alongside jasmine rice and enjoy!
