Editor’s Note...
I love these lighter mornings and longer days. Being an early riser, it’s great to go running at 6am and with all the flowers and plants in bloom, it’s so uplifting to be surrounded by colour again.
The weather in these months can often be better than in the summer, so ensure you get out and make the most of the sunshine. May is the like beginning of summer and a time for fun, happiness and lots of outdoor celebrations. Music festivals are starting up again, there are plenty of outdoor activities and charity events to sign up to and markets galore!
May is also National Walking Month. Walking is great for physical health, mental well-being and is something you can do with family, friends or on your own... plus it’s FREE! There’s no shortage of scenic places to ramble around here. Look out for special social and nature walks put on by Salford Rangers and the Salford Health teams - they are always free too!

GEORGIA’S CHILDREN OF THE WORLD - A LOCAL CHARITY WITH A GLOBAL REACH!
Georgia’s Children of the World was conceived when I travelled the world to try to come to terms with the devastating loss of my only child, Georgia, at just 19.
Witnessing poverty of kids worldwide, particularly in the country that became my spiritual home Cambodia, I came up with concept of a Music Fundraiser to help these kids. That fundraiser was embraced by our incredible community and became G-Festival in 2012.
We have raised over £400k to date, built schools, dug wells, provided feeding and healthcare programs in Cambodia, support breakfast clubs, provided free school uniforms and supported Salford families facing financial difficulties due to serious healthcare issues.
Together with Harpers Army and Georgia’s original
charity, The Children’s Heart Association, we will be supporting families devastated by young children diagnosed with ‘rare’ childhood cancers and serious complex heart conditions.
G-Fest is totally run by volunteers; even our bars are set up and managed for FREE by our incredible friends Jo & Paul Clare who run The Waterside, probably the most successful bar & restaurant in Monton!
Every penny you spend at G-Fest goes EXACTLY where it’s needed! We have amazing acts lined up for our first ever G-Fest Weekender; we will be keeping Friday Prices at just £15 adult entry to introduce Worsley’s first ever outdoor Friday night party with tributes to The KILLERS, pop icon HARRY STYLES and Manchester Anthems from Ellwood!

Bridgewater mark Dementia Action Week with a ‘Forget Me Not’ celebration
Swinton-based Aspire Care and Support, are partnering with RHS Gardens Bridgewater to host a ‘Forget Me Not’ dementia memorial event, to mark Dementia Action Week, on Tuesday 14th May.
Starting at 11am, guests are invited to join a free forget-me-not seed planting activity, before a short service held in the grounds of the wellbeing garden. The forget-me-not flower is a symbol of remembrance and is often associated with Dementia, blooming year after year to give a gentle reminder of those no longer with us.
Guests from Aspire, Reverend Karen Owen and carers will recite reflective readings, before a two-minute silence
to remember loved ones lost to, or living with, dementia. Visitors will then be able to enjoy the rest of the gardens and facilities for free.
Aspire specialises in supporting people with Dementia and their families, as well as those with learning difficulties or complex needs. It has a specialist Dementia Day Service hub and a Dementia Friendly cafe at the Humphrey Booth Resource Centre in Swinton, where it hosts a wide range of daily activities that are open to all.
Entry is free and is open to anyone who would like to attend. For more details visit: www.iamaspire.org.uk

TPart Two Rev. St. Vincent Beechey
The First Rector of Worsley
he Manchester Times of Saturday 20 July 1850 confirmed that the Earl of Ellesmere had nominated the Rev. St. Vincent Beechey to the Perpetual Curacy of Worsley. As for the parish of Worsley, when he was invited to come to here, the income was doubled and a new parsonage was proposed for him and his family. The former vicarage bears the year 1851 above the doorway.
Three giants of church art and architecture in the mid-nineteenth century (Pugin, Barry and Scott) gathered to oversee the installation of some new stained glass tracery windows above the east window – this in anticipation of the visit of Queen Victoria in October 1851. St. Vincent Beechey, as vicar of the parish, played a significant part on each day of her visit.
During his 22 years in the parish, he showed himself to be quite a polymath. Throughout his long life, he was an effective speaker, delivering lectures on Ancient and Modern Astronomy, Archaeology, Architecture - wherever he was living. Often these lectures would be accompanied by ‘a large number of illustrations by the use of his trinoptic lantern.' Sometimes these were delivered in the Royal Manchester Institution, sometimes in Worsley Court House to a general audience of working people. During his time at Worsley, he served as President of the Manchester Photographic Society, 1865 - 1870.
When St. Vincent Beechey arrived at Worsley, the first Earl appointed him as his personal Chaplain. In 1860, the Reverend St. Vincent Beechey, MA,
was appointed Honorary Chaplain of the 4th Battalion Lancashire Rifle Volunteers. This was dated 29 October, 1860, a position he held until 26th March, 1873. In recognition of his pastoral and diocesan work, he served as an Honorary Canon of Manchester Cathedral from 1868 to 1899.
Eventually, he was offered the living of Hilgay, (his old curacy prior to 1840), which he accepted in 1872 – feeling that old age was creeping upon him! In the end, he served there for one year longer than at St. Mark’s!
Mary Ann, St. Vincent Beechey's wife, died on Sunday 21 October 1888 at Hilgay Rectory, Norfolk, aged 82. The clergyman had long ago decided that his burial place would be beneath the east window of the church and it was there that his wife was buried, following the death of his first son, William Innes, aged 30, on 17 March 1869. His second son, St. Vincent Beechey, also was ordained and became a Canon of Manchester.
In the various obituaries to mark his death at Hilgay, on 19 August 1899, aged 93, he was referred to as ‘the oldest clergyman in England.’ His body had been brought by train from Hilgay on 23 August, arriving at London Road Station at 3pm. From there, it came by road to Worsley. The service, to a full congregation, was fully choral and contained two pieces by Handel, his favourite composer.

Salford Double Glazing: Opening the Door to Customers...Literally!
Salford Double Glazing is a specialist double glazing company, built on decades of construction industry experience. A local, family-run business which prides itself on the service it provides to Greater Manchester.
Salford Double Glazing goes above and beyond to meet their customers’ needs. Whether that’s with weekend appointments, or their Disability-friendly installation team, who do everything they can to meet the needs of their customers.
Set up in 2020, a time when the rest of the world was getting to grips with lockdowns, furlough, and a new popular catchphrase - “you’re on mute Susan!” Four years on, they’ve gone from strength to strength, developing a business which provides a quality product at competitive prices with unparalleled customer
service. Their growth has allowed Salford Double Glazing to step outside of their Salford roots and expand to cover the whole of the North West.
One thing that Steve and Emma - Salford Double Glazing’s Directors have noticed, is how many of their customers wished they could see how the physical units operated and felt, before making a decision. This has inspired them to expand the business and open a brand new showroom in Whitefield. Opening in early March, it can be found at 86 Bury Old Road, Whitefield, M45 6TQ.

Getting Ready for Spring!
by Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteer
At the first committee meeting of 2024, we decided several changes of plan and agreed on issues where our plotting needed re-thinking, thankfully without too much argument.
The first matter we agreed was a review of the plans for the Community garden, turfing was rejected in favour of covering the area with heavy duty inhibitor and siting planters at the centre, with others around the plot, all planted with a variety of flowers. This would save time in implementation, cost of turf and labour for our volunteers, with a much quicker result. All approved the changes and suggested the committee ask the ForHousing organisation for some help to complete the plan. This will be taken up once the new financial year begins.
The discussion then turned to another topic when ‘Britain in Bloom’ was raised by a member who wanted to know why an entry wasn’t being planned. So all agreed that the site should be entered into the judging. We will be inspected in summer and will hopefully have a good result. New planters are now being built!
On the Cancer Support plot we are seeing the results of the wildlife garden reconstruction; plenty of birds already and who knows what other guests may pop in!
We have constructed another raised bed and have a crop of new strawberry plants ready for
their new home, plus a selection of Hollyhocks, Nasturtiums and Red Hot Pokers, all just waiting for a little dry, warmer weather. It looks as though our climbing hydrangea cuttings may have survived the winter, but we will see in time.
As usual, the Plotters have been preparing for planting and have a 1-tonne bag of peat-free compost being delivered shortly and the chicken pellets are now nicely spread around the beds.
Several ground level beds need their edges replacing, due to rot, so we’ve found deck-boards and pegs to repair them and our volunteers have the work all programmed. We have two very willing young volunteers who don’t worry about the weather or what they are asked to help with, so they were assigned to fencing our boundary fence with United Utilities and what an excellent job they did!
As always, a busy time getting ready for spring! Next issue we will have bring you update on the Salford Allotments.

It is possible to stop a Grant of Probate from being issued?
Potentially yes. If you believe you have a justified reason, it is possible to try and prevent a Grant of Probate from being issued. This is done by lodging something called a ‘caveat’ with the Probate Registry against the estate of the deceased.
If you wish to do this, do so promptly and ideally, before an application for the Grant has been made to prevent the Grant of Probate from going ahead.
What is a ‘Caveat’?
In this context, a ‘caveat’ is a formal dispute lodged with the Probate Registry that seeks to prevent a Grant of Probate (or Grant of Letters of Administration) from being issued by the Probate Registry.
You should only seek to lodge a caveat with the Probate Registry if you believe you have a genuine and viable dispute; legal advice should be considered to ensure that it is not misused.
Once issued. It will initially remain in place for a period of six months and can be renewed.
Is there a time limit in which a claim must be made?
This will depend largely on the type of claim you intend to make. In our experience, most claims are made under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, and these must be filed
Problem Probate FAQ’s
Widdows Pilling LLP
within six months, subject to certain exceptions.
Whatever claim you are seeking to make, we always recommend that you bring it as soon as possible to ensure that any unforeseen circumstances do not cause you to fall foul of the time limits.
Will I need to attend Court?
Hopefully not. In our experience, most simple probate disputes can be settled without the courts involvement and there are a number of alternative dispute resolution options that can be used to try and keep a matter out of Court. Doing so should negate both the costs and complexities associated with the contentious probate disputes.
How long could a claim last?
Due to the unpredictable nature of probate disputes, it’s impossible to give even a rough estimate. Contentious Probates are unique and subject to several factors that could affect their time frame.
Although we hope the above might be helpful, it does not constitute legal advice and if you do find yourself in any of the above situations, we would recommend that you seek formal advice.

Banana and Walnut Loaf
A homely and wholesome loaf cake, light and moist - perfect with an afternoon tea or coffee.
Preparation time: 15 mins
Cooking time: 60-70 mins
Serves: 8 slices

• 2 level tsp baking powder
• 80g softened butter

Preheat oven to 180C / gas 4. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin.
Mash three bananas to a pulp and chop the fourth.
