Bridgewater School invites you to begin your individual journey

When it comes to finding the perfect learning environment for your child, the team at Bridgewater School in Worsley believe that it is as much about instinct as academic success. Which is why all journeys at this family-focused school begin with a personal visit.

At this independent day school for children aged 3-18 years, success and happiness go hand in hand. At the heart of the school’s ethos lies the belief that every individual deserves a range of opportunities which will enable them to flourish, and visitors are invited to experience this holistic approach to education for themselves.

For parents interested in the benefits of a Bridgewater education, the school is holding an Open Day for all year groups on Saturday 2nd November.

Besides enjoying the opportunity to speak to the Headteacher and Heads of Department, visitors are also able to discuss the many exciting possibilities open to their child with the school’s experienced and committed teaching staff. Families will be given a personal tour of the school’s unique woodland setting by a member of their student body, and find out more about the individualised support and teaching that they provide.

Visit bridgewater-school.co.uk/open-day-2024 to register and see just how far your child could go.

WHY?

KNOW YOUR SKIN

Having worked in the beauty industry for over 25 years, I have invested a lot of time learning about the skin, how the skin works and the factors that make significant changes to the skin… but what I have noticed over the years is that these facts and theories don’t work for everyone. It’s not one size suits all when it comes to skin care.

We are all different! It’s as simple as that; our genetics, health, lifestyle, diet and those dam pesky hormones! Not only are we all built differently, but our bodies react differently from one person to the next - no one regime or plan will work the same for everyone. Puberty, pregnancy, menopause, health conditions and medication also have a huge impact on our skin.

The skin is our biggest organ and we need to look after it! So what can we do?

CONSULTATION

Firstly, I recommend a skin consultation. We carry out thorough skin consultations involving a detailed questionnaire and a skin scan. The skin scan shows deeper layers of skin and we can see under the surface layers to monitor sebaceous activity, vascular lesions, sun damage, pigmentation, dehydration and deeper lines and wrinkles. Then looking at skincare, diet, lifestyle and supplementation, we recommend personalised treatments and products for you.

HOMECARE

When it comes to homecare, start with the basics; thorough cleansing, feeding (supplement, serums and moisturisers) and protecting (UVA and UVB sunscreens).

The PH of cleansers vary. Anything that is alkaline will disrupt and breakdown the acid mantle (the skins natural protective barrier) causing loss of water, increased sebum production, greater skin sensitivity, and higher risk of sun damage. Alkaline products also disrupt the skins microbiome which can increase the risk of acne, rosacea and skin sensitivity making it more susceptible to extrinsic damage. When it comes to feeding the skin we need a good moisturiser. This will differ from one person to the next but choosing a cosmeceutical or clinical grade product that works on different levels of the skin will

help so much more than using a cosmetic brand product that simply sits on the skin.

A good moisturiser containing active ingredients is a great start. Vitamin A is a core skincare ingredient and has been used for many years in various skincare products. But don’t forget that not all forms of vitamin A are the same.

SUNSCREEN

Then comes protection; full spectrum, UVA & UVB protection should be used 365 days a year! Look closely at ingredients, not all sunscreens are the same.

CLINICAL TREATMENTS

We have three high quality cosmeceutical ranges of skincare. Environ in-salon treatments include the iconic Ionzyme Electrical Facial, Collagen Induction Therapy (micro-needling) and a variety of cold peels. Lira Clinical is a vast peel range with the highest quality of plant stem cells and minerals for less down time. Then we have Dermalogica, a multi level skincare range, a good starting point for beginners.

There’s something for every skin type and condition; as well as peels and facials, we offer IPL, micro current, microdermabrasion, thermal-coagulation, high frequency, ultra sound, nano needling, galvanic treatments and a range of injectable skin boosters.

Consultations £50 (redeemable against products or treatments) or FREE WHEN YOU MENTION “On Our Doorstep”.

Children Matters and Family Law

Children matters can at times be highly conflicted and when there is a breakdown in communication between the parents the living and visiting arrangements are not always agreed and a great deal of anxiety and anguish can be caused to both the parents and the children.

Generally speaking, there is a presumption in favour of a child having regular contact with the parent he or she does not live with.

Where a dispute arises in respect of a child’s upbringing the law encourages parents to reach agreement on as many matters as possible without the need to make an application to the court. Indeed, there is a “No order principle” which means that the court will not make an order unless it believes that this would be better for the child than making no order at all.

If an agreement cannot be reached, court proceedings are not the only way of resolving the issues and many parents find mediation helpful and we always support this route. Mediation is not appropriate in all cases although in most circumstances the mediation process must be considered before court proceedings can be commenced.

As parents you share responsibility for your children and have a duty to talk to each other. The court will expect you in the first instance to try and agree

arrangements for your child.

If the dispute cannot be resolved the court has the power to make orders determining who a child is to live with, spend time or otherwise have contact with, specific issues such as schooling, what a parent may not do with a child such as leave the country and grant parental responsibility to a father.

The Family Procedural Rules which govern the procedures used in family cases in England and Wales have been significantly amended and from April 2024, in private law children proceedings and contested financial remedy proceedings, parties will be required to file a standard form setting out their views on engaging with non-court dispute resolution. There is however an exception and that relates to cases where there is domestic abuse. The changes made are to encourage parties to seek alternative methods for resolving disputes arising from the breakdown of a relationship.

Advice from well qualified family solicitors with a wealth of experience is invaluable. If you would like further advice contact us at Widdows Pilling: Email: rjp@widdows-pilling.co.uk or jh@widdows-pilling.co.uk Tel: 0161 790 1825

Alder Forest Funeral Home

Discover the Dignified Simplicity of Direct Cremation

Alder Forest is an independent family-run funeral home serving Winton, Worsley, Eccles and surrounding areas. Alder Forest staff have over 20 years’ experience in the funeral industry; dedicated to providing a caring, dignified and professional service to families who have entrusted us with the care of their loved ones.

Direct Cremation, as seen on TV, is becoming a popular choice.

In today’s world, more people are seeking straightforward, respectful ways to honour their loved ones without the complexity and expense of traditional funerals. At Alder Forest Funeral Home we understand this need and proudly offer direct cremation as a dignified, low-cost alternative that provides the essential services required for a respectful farewell.

Direct cremation is the perfect choice for those who wish to have a respectful cremation without a formal service. It offers simplicity and peace of mind. Our direct cremation service has been widely recognised for its compassionate approach and affordability.

What is Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation is an unattended cremation, which does not include a formal funeral ceremony, allowing families to focus on their memories and personal tributes in their own time and manner. This process allows families to avoid the additional costs and complexities associated with conventional funerals.

When your loved one passes away they will be brought into our care at Alder Forest Funeral Home. Cremation takes place shortly after on a date, time, and location chosen by us, and without mourners. Your loved one will be taken to the crematorium in a hearse.

What Does Our Direct Cremation Service Include?

• Professional Care: Our dedicated team will take care of all the necessary arrangements with compassion and respect.

• Cremation Fee: All cremation costs are included in our direct cremation service. There are no hidden fees or unexpected expenses.

• Essential Paperwork: We manage all necessary documentation, ensuring a seamless process during this difficult time.

• Simple Coffin: A simple coffin is provided for the cremation, meeting all legal requirements and ensuring your loved one is treated with dignity.

• Return of Ashes: After the cremation, your loved one’s ashes are carefully collected and returned to you.

Why Choose Direct Cremation?

• Affordability: Traditional funerals can be costly. Direct cremation offers an affordable option without compromising on dignity or respect.

• Simplicity: Some families prefer a no-fuss approach, without elaborate services or ceremonies. Direct cremation allows families to honour their loved ones in a way that feels right for them.

• Flexibility: Families have the freedom to organise a memorial or celebration of life at a later date, in a manner that truly reflects their loved one’s wishes and personality.

• Respect and Dignity: Despite being a more economical option, our direct cremation service ensures that your loved one is treated with the highest level of care and respect throughout the entire process.

At Alder Forest Funeral Home, we believe that everyone deserves a respectful farewell. For more information or to discuss your needs, please contact us today.

St. Mark’s Graveyard

The graveyard at St. Mark’s Church, Worsley, covers a few acres of ground and contains 2,500+ plots. There are probably circa 10,000 people buried here. A brief walk will reveal a wide variety of stones that mark the presence of deceased persons. Some are very striking and can be seen from distance; others are small and almost unobtrusive. Styles vary, as does the type of stone used and also the colours. Some are inscribed with first names that are not heard today (e.g. Asenath, Heber, Lot, Zuleika). The style of the inscriptions is also fascinating. Even surnames can rouse an interest (e.g. Schuster, Boschetti).

The stories of the people who have been buried here are also interesting. The first three Earls of Ellesmere were all interred in the family vault, alongside their wives and some of the children (12 in total); there are 30 graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, easily identified by their colour, stone and shape; some servicemen were interred in family graves; civilian casualties whose deaths were caused by bombs in WW2; numerous local artisans and craftsmen, miners and blacksmiths; distinguished people who chose to be buried here – the reasons behind their being buried here arouse interest. Over the past 9 months, we have been working to bring some of these stories to public attention and the extent of

our research can be found on our new website at www.st-marks-graveyard.org

It would take too much space to promote particular names, but just take a look at Agnew, Teale, Tootal, Tyldesley and Boschetti. But why did so many people who had no connection to the church choose to be buried here? TRUTH magazine in May and June 1890 gives us a clue - because it was “a very beautiful church, with an extremely picturesque churchyard, a Marquis for a vicar and it had been established by a benevolent Peer of the realm.” It must be pointed out that the local residents only paid a small charge for their right to be buried here, whereas others from further afield paid a much higher charge. [TRUTH was a weekly journal whose unflinching style often led to libel cases].

The very first entry was on 10 July 1846, 8 days after the consecration of the church - Oliver Eckersley, aged 2 years, of Shaving Lane (now part of Walkden Road). He died of Croup; the service was conducted by Chas. Cameron, Perpetual Curate.

Today, the churchyard is officially full, but there is room for the burial of ashes in the Woodlands Rest. There will undoubtedly be more stories of people from all walks of life to be recognised. However, the church today faces a financial struggle. There is extensive restoration work to be carried out and at great cost (£435,000). A Restoration Fund has been set up to help raise this amount and any donations would be most welcome. Should any individual or business wish to support this appeal, please visit the website to see how you can help.

Joseph EVANS (1803 - 1874)Thomas BROCKBANK (1867 - 1938)Pte. Arthur RATCLIFFE (1895 - 1918)

The challenges of the first Half of 2024!

Another confusing year, so much rain and delayed planting made us worry about how we should proceed, so in true ‘bulldog breed’ fashion, we did as we always have and just got on with it. That’s not to say that all went well - our peas were a disaster but the broad beans a bountiful delight, who can work that out? They were on adjacent beds!

Fate has smiled on our blueberries, gooseberries (red and white), currants - we had great crops and courgettes by the ‘trugfull’, despite our very unfriendly slug invasion. We have tried slug control by sheep fleece (they used it as bedding!), organic slug pellets (very edible), copper wire (nice slime trail), copper solution for a pretty red shower...they laughed at them all and then laid dozens more eggs. A local environmental expert said the “birds will eat them in the summer”, they’d get fat on the volume if they did. We planted 90 giant sunflower seeds and our slimey fiends chomped their way through every one, whatever we did and however grown-on we planted them out.

As we planted the shallots and onions we worried about the lack of sun, but we needn’t have fretted, both have done better than ever, the shallots are bigger and more prolific than expected and the white onions look fantastic. The red ones seem to have faltered a bit and are undersized.

Our potatoes went in a little later than we would have liked, due to the ground being so soggy and cold. As soon as a little drier spell arrived, we put them in and we will harvest them late too. Who knows if this may become a necessary pattern for future seasons?

Tips for dealing with unexpected heatwaves! The weather can change so quickly and catch us out, going from gloom to scorching in a trice. Don’t be caught out if the sun blazes, be ready and relax.

Your plants will be safe if you have mulched them well, whether you use compost, stone, slate or some other material, the covering will help retain moisture for the roots, especially if you continue to water. Just be careful to do your watering early in the morning or after the sun has passed away from your plants; early or late will be best.

If making a new planting, ensure you water the planting hole well and keep watering well until your newcomer is established.

Don’t water anywhere but the ground at the base of your plants; any stay water on leaves could cause scorching and damage them. If you have plants in pots in your garden, remember to water them every day, whatever the weather, and they need a regular feed as they can’t draw up minerals from the earth.

Let’s hope for some well needed sunshine and no extremes that cause dehydrating conditions or floods.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Details are correct at the time of publishing. However, please check event dates and times with the venue in case of any changes.

Preparation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 45-50 mins

Serves: 10-12 slices

Ingredients

Cake

• 200g butter, plus extra for the tin

• 200g golden caster sugar

• 3 medium eggs

• 225g plain flour

• 2 tsp baking powder

• 50g ground almonds

• 2 tbsp milk

• 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract

• 3 tbsp blackcurrant or blackberry and apple jam

• 150g blackberries

Crumble

• 50g plain flour

• 25g unsalted butter

• 25g caster sugar

• 1 tbsp demerara sugar

• Pinch of salt

• 1 tbsp flaked almonds

Blackberry & Almond Crumble Cake

A simple but moist butter cake with fresh blackberries and an irresistible crumble topping.

Method

Cake

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4.

Grease a 23cm round cake tin and line with baking parchment. Beat the butter and the sugar together in a large bowl using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time until smooth and creamy. Sift in the flour and baking powder, then fold in, adding the almonds, milk, and vanilla until mixed thoroughly.

Scrape the mixture into the tin and level the surface. Dot teaspoons of jam across the mix, then scatter over the blackberries, pressing them in lightly.

Crumble

Rub the flour and butter together until the mixture resembles crumbs, then stir in the sugar and add a pinch of salt. Mix in the flaked almonds, then scatter the crumble over the cake.

Scatter with the demerara sugar and bake for 45 mins until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Leave to cool in the tin for at least 20 mins then slice and serve with creme fraiche.
