Editor’s Note...
Moving from winter to spring we can delight in the longer, warmer days and watch Mother Nature in bloom again. I am looking forward to getting back to early morning runs, seeing beautiful cherry blossoms and spending more time outdoors without a winter coat.
In these months we celebrate our loved ones with Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. This year, Mother’s Day falls later on Sunday 30th March. I never knew why the date moved each year, but I do now and I thought I would share it with you!
The custom of celebrating this day began in the 16th Century when servants were given the day off to visit their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent. Children and other family members joined in and the focus of this rare family get-together shifted to visiting not just the mother church, but one’s own mother. This day became known as Mothering Sunday!

Salford Foodbank: MORE THAN FOOD
Did you know that Salford Foodbank offer far more than just food?
People referred to the Foodbank are offered a food parcel which contains 3 days worth of products for everyone in their household – this includes a variety of food to make breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks, biscuits and drinks. We also offer a selection of additional items including toiletries, sanitary products, fresh bread, pet food and household items such as washing up liquid.
We are proud to work alongside Salford Citizens Advice with advisors based at all our Foodbank centres. They offer advice to help people maximise their income and support, with the aim of preventing them from needing to use the Foodbank again. The advisors have an incredible depth of knowledge around benefits, housing and local signposting.
A foodbank is the last place anyone imagines they’ll be, but our wonderful teams of volunteers ensure that everyone is made to feel welcome and valued – and offered a hot drink and a chat if they wish.
With more and more people struggling to afford the basic essentials, we need your help more than ever. As a charity we are completely reliant on the goodwill of local supporters to enable us to continue our work.
If you can, please continue to donate food items to us - either at our warehouse at 4 Kansas Avenue, Salford, M50 2GL, or at one of our foodbank tubs found in most large supermarkets and other donation points across Salford.

What is Pilates and Why is it Unique?
by Kevin Edwards - Core 30 Studio
Pilates is a dynamic exercise method designed to enhance strength, flexibility, balance, and overall body awareness. Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, this fitness discipline focuses on controlled movements, proper alignment, and mindful breathing. Over the decades, Pilates has gained global popularity for its ability to transform the body and mind, offering benefits that set it apart from other exercise modalities.
PRECISION AND CONTROL
At its core, Pilates is about precision and control. Unlike high-impact workouts that rely on repetitive, fast-paced movements, Pilates emphasises slow, deliberate motions performed with focused attention. Each exercise is designed to target specific muscle groups while engaging the core. This unique approach builds functional strength - muscles that support everyday activities - rather than simply adding bulk.
POWERHOUSE
One of the standout features of Pilates is its emphasis on the “powerhouse,” a term that refers to the core muscles, including the abdominals, lower back, hips, and pelvic floor. By strengthening this area, Pilates improves posture, stabilizes the spine, and enhances overall body mechanics. This makes it particularly beneficial for individuals seeking relief from back pain, poor posture, or muscular imbalances.
ADAPTABILITY
What makes Pilates truly unique is its adaptability. It’s a workout suitable for people of all ages, fitness levels, and physical conditions. Whether you’re a professional athlete looking to enhance performance, a beginner starting a fitness journey, or someone recovering from injury, Pilates exercises can be tailored to meet individual needs. Its low-impact nature also makes it a safe option for pregnant women, seniors, and those with joint issues.
MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Another defining characteristic of Pilates is its focus on the mind-body connection. Unlike traditional gym workouts, which often involve mindless repetitions, Pilates encourages mindful engagement. Practitioners are guided to concentrate on their movements, align their breathing with effort, and maintain mental presence throughout each exercise. This meditative quality not only enhances physical results but also promotes relaxation and reduces stress.
WHOLE BODY
Additionally, Pilates sets itself apart by offering a holistic workout experience. While many fitness programmes isolate specific body parts, Pilates works the body as an integrated whole. This approach ensures balanced muscle development, improved flexibility, and better coordination.
In conclusion, Pilates is more than just a workoutit’s a transformative practice that unites physical fitness with mental clarity. Its focus on precision, adaptability, and the mind-body connection makes it a truly unique exercise method. Whether you aim to build strength, alleviate pain, or find a sense of balance, Pilates at Core 30 Studio offers something special for everyone.

‘Clatties’ in Boothstown
The term "clattie" or "clatties" is a dialect word that refers to a clog - a type of traditional wooden shoe. In some northern English dialects, especially in Lancashire, a "clattie" would be a type of footwear often associated with working-class people, particularly those employed in industries like mining or cotton mills. The clogs were practical, hard-wearing shoes designed for safety and durability, especially in factory environments.
Not long ago most northern villages and towns had a clog shop. Today clogs are very rarely worn. Clogs were popular and were comfortable to wear, in fact, were specially shaped to aid deformity. Workers in the mills, mines, tanneries preferred to wear clogs. They were not only made for work, some had different tops and clasps which made them suitable for walking or dancing. Making clogs was a skilled trade and started with suitable wood, usually alder.
The photograph above shows the Clog Shop owned by Mr. Clare at the bottom of Chaddock Lane in Boothstown which was known as ‘Clattie’s’ Clog Shop. Chaddock Lane was one of the streets
that connected various local industries, homes and businesses, so an ideal location for a clog shop or cobbler to serve the needs of local workers.
They stocked a range of black clogs in various weights and strengths. The miners required a very strong heavy leather clog fastened with a strong buckle, but for leisure wear the clogs were of a much lighter weight and fastened with a strap over the instep. All clogs were fitted with ‘irons’ on the soles and ‘clip-clopped’ as one walked along a pavement. They were beautifully warm and dry and very hard wearing.
The children from the school enjoyed watching ‘Clattie’ at work and were welcomed by Mr. Clare. A ‘Clog Fund’ at the school helped deserving families to bury clogs for the children.
When the clog shop closed it became a newsagent and is now a private house.
The information for this short article was provided in 2004 by Ken Fairfax and Eric Ripley as part of Boothstown Local History Project.

No Fault Divorce
On the 6th April 2022, new legislation came into force implementing no-fault divorce - The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act (2020) which received Royal Assent in June 2020. The new legislation represents the biggest change in divorce law since 1973. It allows couples to divorce without apportioning blame for the breakdown of their marriage and removes the possibility of contesting the divorce save in a limited number of issues, none of which relate to the actual breakdown of the marriage. It also introduces an option for the divorcing couple to make a joint application if they so wish.
Under the old divorce law one spouse was required to make allegations of the other’s conduct (unreasonable behaviour), or adultery, or to prove desertion, or wait either two years or five years.
The changes mean that a spouse can make a sole application for divorce, or both spouses can jointly make the application, by stating that their marriage has irretrievably broken down.
The new law reduces/removes unnecessary acrimony at what can be a very distressing, difficult and emotional time for those involved including any children.
The Act also introduces a new minimum timeframe of 20 weeks between the commencement of the divorce proceedings and when a Conditional Order
of divorce can be applied for. This timeframe will allow couples to reflect, agree important matters such as the future arrangements for any child(ren) and to agree what is to happen in relation to division of matrimonial assets. The Final Order can be applied for 6 weeks and 1 day after the pronouncement of the Conditional Order. However, a spouse may decide to delay applying for the Final Order until such time as financial and property matters have been dealt with and there is agreement and a financial remedies order in place in relation to those aspects.
The reforms in the divorce law are designed to reduce conflict in the family courts and to make the journey less distressing for divorcing couples.
It is however important to obtain advice particularly where parties have been able to agree the terms of their financial separation before they can apply for a Conditional Order and how to protect that agreement in the interim.
We aim to work in a conciliatory way helping our clients to achieve the best outcomes they can with as little hostility as possible.
Advice from well qualified family solicitors with a wealth of experience is invaluable in relation to all aspects of family law.

Early Spring Gardening Jobs in March
March is a lovely month but it can also be a challenging one for the gardener with winter often reluctant to release us from her grip. Days are getting longer and gardens are springing to life; plants, insects, birds and small mammals are busying themselves for the brighter, warmer days to come, as are some unwanted pests.
Here are some early spring gardening jobs...
Mow your lawn...maybe
There is nothing like the smell of a freshly cut grass to make you think of spring. With our milder winters, March may well be the time to give your lawn the first mow of the year, but only if the weather is dry and has been for a little while, or you could cause damage. If you have any dandelions on your lawn, consider leaving them as they’ll provide a vital food source for insects.
The vegetable plot
The early potatoes that you’ve been chitting need to planted, as do onion or shallot sets. As the potatoes sprout be watchful of potential frosts and hoe up and cover accordingly. If the forecast is mild think about sowing broad beans, peas, carrots and beetroot. Spinach, summer cabbage and cauliflower can also be sown outdoors, along with some lettuces.
Flower borders
March is the perfect time to plant summer flowering bulbs such as gladioli and lilies. As the weather can
be variable, consider sowing summer flowering annuals such as nicotiana, petunias, marigolds and salvias in the greenhouse or cold frame.
Hardy annuals such as stocks, sunflowers and poppies are by their very nature less affected by variable temperature and weather conditions - if you have a sunny area in your garden, they should grow well.
Pest prevention
Although some pests have a vital role to play in our gardens, we are all aware that as well as our plants springing to life in March, our friend the slug is also feeling the urge to fill his tummy on our newly planted seedlings. Slug pellets have a wider impact than just killing the pests and can have a negative effect on wildlife so opt for natural pest control.
There are many natural ways to try and deter slugs. There are some plants they don’t like, such as foxgloves, lavender and roses, but to protect the ones they do like consider placing a barrier around them. You can buy slug barriers at garden centres, or sprinkle crushed eggshells or coffee grounds around your plants. Or, lure them into beer traps (small dishes sunk into the ground filled with beer) - slugs and snails love the yeasty, fermented odour! Finally, if you have the time you could embark on a slug hunt each night after dark!
Enjoy getting out in your garden this spring! Rob Bullock https://robbullockauthor.blogspot.com

The Joys of Plotting
by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteer
2024 was a disaster for our crops - far too much rain and hardly any sun caused a crop failure on a mega-scale. What seemed to be a bumper crop of potatoes and onions turned into a stack of useless spuds and an equally unusable load of onions and shallots. The strawberries didn’t produce any fruit, even the newly planted bed didn’t show any signs of trying. We thought that the gooseberries were going to do us proud but, what we were treated to was a whole lot of new, spikey growth and pokey fruit that even the birds wouldn’t eat.
When autumn arrived we were very relieved to harvest our apples, the cookers were better than ever and the eaters were safely stored in our cool, dark shed for over winter. The soggy winter has left us drinking lots of tea and discussing plans for 2025, very much enhanced by an Advent calendar of ‘Heritage Seeds’ gifted to us by a hopeful daughter, wishing for a share of, what we hope will be a bountiful 2025 season. We discussed the chances of ‘rain dances’ reducing the affects, if not postponing for a while, of global warming but decided it was probably not likely to be effective and certainly not appropriate for a group of our years!
The gazebo is our preferred destination for chatting so we have at least benefitted from the open air in the afternoons and the social interchanges with plotholders who drop in for a chat or just to moan about their bad results too.
We’re all keeping our options open on what and when to plant - given the changing climate, it’s all a bit of a puzzle and a challenge. The good side is that we enjoy working in the fresh air with a lot of like minded characters, who also don’t really mind the weather - we would miss the physical and social benefits of plotting if we let that put us off.
Salford Allotment Update
Away from the plot, the newly completed allotments in Walkden could not be accepted from the developer since the topsoil imported was not of a good enough quality for planting, so removal and re-stocking is to be carried out before the site is considered acceptable for the Council to take control.
Discussion and design work on the Beechfield site in Swinton is ongoing with many issues already agreed and hopefully a consensus being reached so that a start on site will not be delayed too long.

Spring Chicken!
Teriyaki and
Ingredients
• 2 tbsp rice flour (or baking powder)
• 900g chicken wings, pat dry with kitchen roll
• 4 tbsp soy sauce
• 2 garlic cloves, finely diced
• Thumb-sized piece of ginger, finely chopped.
• 4 tbsp light soft brown sugar
• 1 tbsp cornflour
• 1 lime - zested and juiced
• 2 spring onions, sliced
• 1 red chilli, remove seeds and chop finely
• Jasmine rice to serve
Lime-Glazed Chicken Wings
Budget-friendly and full of flavour, try these glazed chicken wings in sticky sauce, served with jasmine rice for an easy family meal.
Preparation time: 10 mins | Cooking time: 40-45 minutes | Serves: 4
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas 8.
2. Line a large baking tray with grease proof paper. Place the dry chicken wings in a large bowl. Sprinkle over the rice flour or baking powder and mix well until the chicken wings are coated. Season well with salt and pepper.
3. Spread the coated wings across the baking tray in a single layer. Bake for 20 mins.
4. While the chicken is cooking, make the teriyaki glaze. Into a small pan add the soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sugar and 150ml water. Cook over a medium heat for 4-5 mins until the glaze is bubbling and slightly thickened. Mix two tbsp of the glaze with the cornflour, then pour the mixture back into the pan, whisking continuously. Simmer for 2-3 mins until thickened. Squeeze in the lime juice.
5. Remove the chicken from the
oven at 20 minutes and tip them into a bowl. Reserve a few tablespoons of the glaze and pour the rest over the wings, making sure they're well coated. Spread them over the baking tray again and return to the oven for another 20 mins.
6. When cooked, remove from the oven, top with the reserved glaze, then sprinkle with the lime zest, spring onions and chilli. Serve with fluffy jasmine rice.
