Autumn can either be a time to slow down, as the days get shorter and cooler, or time to give yourself one last push to make the most of the final quarter of the year. For me it’s the latter.
Don’t hibernate yet, get out whilst the temperatures are still mild. Enjoy nature and the vibrant orange and reds of the autumn leaves. Dress for the weather, layer up and you’ll be cosy and content. Then come home for hot warming drinks and your favourite comfort foods.
There are many walks, runs and special activties to join in with, plus festive fairs and artisan markets where you can pick up unique Christmas gifts. Enjoy local events and support local businesses.
If you’re a local business, get ahead for the new year, organise your marketing for 2025 before the festive season hits!
Enjoy these beautiful months!

Ten years ago, one of the very first children to experience the life-changing impact of reading with a Schoolreaders volunteer was Lucy. She struggled with reading from an early age and was recently diagnosed with Dyslexia. Lucy credits her weekly sessions with a Schoolreaders volunteer throughout her primary education as helping her to gain the confidence and skills needed to succeed.
Now, Lucy has emerged triumphant in her GCSEs, achieving remarkable grades, including a 9 (A*) in English Language. This has set her in good stead to continue with her passion for creative subjects and has lit the path to university in the future.
Looking back, Lucy recalls, “She [Liz, Schoolreaders volunteer] came in regularly, and helped me to get through all of the reading levels.” Liz would help by testing her understanding of the words. Lucy fondly

remembers that “Liz would often shut the book and ask me to recite a sentence back to her. I always struggled with that because I could never remember what I had just read, but she would always make sure I knew.”
“Spending time with a Schoolreaders volunteer definitely helped me in my GCSE’s. It still helps me now, because thanks to Liz I feel much more confident. Having been diagnosed with dyslexia very recently, I’m sure that the help I had at a younger age is what has allowed me to be so much further along with my reading now.”

Adoption is a life-long journey…
Adoption is an experience that’s full of adventure, challenges, conversation, chaos – and love.
While there may be bumps in the road, adopting a child in need of a forever home will take you to places you never imagined – once you take that first step.
Sadly, for the first time in recent years, there are now more children in need of a permanent home than those coming forward to adopt, with a 14% increase in children needing an adoptive family, compared to 2022-23.
Adopters are needed from all walks of life and the chances are that if you want to – you can adopt.
For many potential parents, there are worries about practical and financial support and being an adoptive parent is no different. You do have to seriously consider what it will mean for you as a family, but there is support available and we will be able to advise you on what support we can offer.
Just like all parenting, adoption may not always be a smooth journey, but the rewards of giving a child a loving, stable home are unparalleled.
There isn’t a ‘perfect’ time to start a family. For a child in need of adoption, the perfect time is now.

The Great Self-build: Inside Salford’s Unusual Upcoming Community Hub
Little Hulton’s Peel Park has a new community centre, cafe, BMX pump track and, soon, a forest school and is becoming a focal point for local residents that redefines ‘hands-on’ participation.
Fencing still surrounds the newly built, many roofed brick building at Peel Park that’s emerging as Little Hulton’s newest community asset. It’s a prime location that anyone shuttling between the M61 and Walkden will see. The new CommUNITY Little Hulton Pavilion, opening later this year as the new HQ for the CommUNITY Little Hulton (CLM) charity, will be the most significant change to Peel Park and Little Hulton in a generation, housing multiple support services for the local area and a new public café.
CLM have been investing in young lives for a number of years, focusing on young adults who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) and children from deprived backgrounds. For the past 5 years they’ve been developing plans for the £1m new community centre project, as part of CLM’s ongoing improvements to the existing pavilion and ancillary facilities in the park. Designed by Architecture Unknown, the new community hub will be a disarming, cheerful place, full of light and colour.
However, there’s something very unusual about this project; it’s most definitely not a normal building. Architecture Unknown are experts in a novel construction system called WikiHouse which is designed to empower communities to build their own buildings. Alison Jones, centre manager for CommUNITY Little Hulton said “At the end over 100 people will have been involved in building the
frames of the new building.” Comprising only local residents, in particular school children from St. Edmund’s RC School, the volunteers have been organising, hammering and drilling to build the primary structure of the building together all by themselves! WikiHouse is a low-cost, sustainable and simple solution to construction that allows participants think differently about building by doing for construction what IKEA did for furniture, i.e. make it possible for everyone to get stuck into a building project with no prior skills or training and save money whilst retaining a high level of quality.
“We found that people, in this case, children tend to have personal resonance when building their own community centre,” says Charlie Butterwick, Director at Architecture Unknown. “With WikiHouse, we are able to achieve sweat equity savings whilst giving belonging to those you really need it.” Alison Jones said, “It has had a bit of magic about it. You’re there and you’re hitting a piece of wood and suddenly you’ve built a beam for a building and you’ve done it as a collective.” During the WikiHouse build process, one child drew their handprint on a beam, starting a trend where every volunteer, no matter what age followed suit. “They all wanted ‘to claim their piece of this building’,” says Charlie, “something to hold as their own, but also to affirm that Little Hulton and Peel Park is their home.”
If you’re interested in finding out more about WikiHouse or have a project you think would suit it contact Architecture Unknown on 07894 012780 or info@architectureunknown.co.uk.

Worsley Concert Band is an inclusive, community band which rehearses in Wardley Community Centre on a Wednesday. We welcome players of all ability levels and we are especially looking for percussion, oboe players and lower brass players. So if you are interested in joining us, do get in touch!
Worsley Concert Band started in 1974 as the B.O.C. Concert Band under the leadership of Jim Cooke. Since then, the band has grown from 9 players to over 40 and this year, we have reached the milestone birthday of 50 years. We will be marking the occasion with a celebration concert as well as by purchasing some new music and branded folders for all members.
We recently appointed Peter Dunkley as our music
Worsley Concert Band Celebrating 50 years!
director. Peter started with the band in 2022 as a clarinettist and offered to help out when our previous music director left to go touring. Peter has directed many ensembles throughout the UK and Europe from symphony orchestras, massed choirs, through to big bands and chamber ensembles and he has been encouraging the band to expand its repertoire – we can’t wait to see where he takes us next.
Our Christmas concert will be held on Wednesday 11th December and we will be sharing the concert with Salford Community Choir. It promises to be a wonderful Christmas celebration and it would be fantastic to see some new faces there to join us.
COHABITATION AGREEMENTS
As family specialists, we often meet clients who tell us they have been in a long-term committed relationship over many years and have the mistaken view that they are a common law wife or husband. We have to tell them that there is currently no separate law of cohabitation and they have no ‘rights’ as such based on the fact that they have lived with a partner for a number of years.
Unlike in the case of married couples or those who have entered into a civil partnership, there is no specific legislation dealing with rights to property or pensions for cohabitees. In most cases, the applicable law is the law of property and where there are children the right to make claims under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989 or the Child Support Act 1991. It is often distressing for clients to be told that their understanding of the law (often based on misinformation given in TV dramas or in popular magazines) is wrong.
We come across many people who have been disadvantaged and, in some cases, misled as to their positions. There have been repeated calls for the reform of the law over the past 30 years and the current government is committed to implementing the recommendations of the Law Commission to introduce legislation giving the rights to cohabitates, but there is no saying when, if ever, change will come.
The answer for any couple looking to set up a home together, who do not intend to marry or enter into a civil partnership, is to have a cohabitation agreement prepared by experienced family lawyers such as ourselves. Cohabitation agreements cover such issues as the shares in property and the ways in which shares can be altered over time through contribution, the arrangements for children, payment of nursery fees and contributions to the household outgoings.
Agreements can be as simple or as complex as the couple want. Whilst we generally advise that simplicity is best, we have drafted long and complicated agreements, and covering such issues as the purchase and costs of keeping pets and who will pay for holidays and Christmas presents. The form and nature of the agreement depends on what the couples want.
Many couples regard such arrangements as unromantic and would rather spend the cost of preparing such an agreement on their new home but experience shows that a simple well-prepared agreement gives couples a solid basis for what will hopefully be a happy family life together.

Worsley Methodist Church on Barton Road was one of the oldest and most attractive Methodist churches in the area until it sadly closed in 2011. It had an historic organ, prominent central pulpit and full circular balcony in traditional Methodist style. It opened in 1801 when Worsley was an industrial centre focussed on the Bridgewater canal. Along with its newer neighbour of St Mark’s Church (built in 1846) it served the community for over 200 years.
In the early days of the church, the Worsley pulpit was occupied by many eminent men. Up until 1813, eleven Presidents of the Methodist Conference preached in the church.
The church also played a prominent part in educating many Worsley people (with a Sunday School opening in 1814) and social activities included concerts, a cricket club and tennis team. Anniversaries were times of celebration as well as the annual Whit Walks. Many will remember the extravagant Flower Festivals of recent years or the Carol Services.
Sadly, in 2011, the community were unable to purchase the building and developers had plans for apartments. It lay empty for a number of years until Paul Sweeney of Sandywood Property Ltd took over the building. Over recent months he has invested expertise and money to refurbish the church into a high class tea room. The Sunday School at the side has been converted into an apartment. The church has had a new roof and floor, but the old organ and pulpit have been retained. Some pews positioned around the edge retain more of the character of the old building. The full balcony has been retained (for additional seating) but the cast iron columns have been replaced. The church hall at the rear has been demolished to make a courtyard area so walkers
Worsley Methodist Church
can enjoy refreshments (via a rear entrance) with their dogs etc. There is modern convenience in an antique setting with hot-desks, a meeting room and first class kitchen and toilets.
The venue will be open for locals and visitors during the day, but each evening the venue will be available for community use.
Paul should be congratulated for his commitment to adapting a much-loved old building for another purpose and providing a community asset which should be of benefit to the local community for many years. As one of the past members of the church I wish to thank Paul for continuing the legacy of the building. Works are almost complete and the facilities are likely to be open this Autumn.
If you are interested in the history of the local area you may be interested in Salford Histories Festival which will take place on Saturday 26th October from 10 till 4 at Swinton Civic Centre.

Declutter your home this autumn
With the festive season just around the corner and Christmas decorations soon to come out of storage, now is the perfect time to declutter your home.
As we spend more time indoors in the colder months, it’s a great opportunity to have a good look around and finally clear out those items you no longer want or need. Here are a few tips to help...
Focus on flat surfaces
First and foremost, are your kitchen work surfaces covered in utensils, boxes of tea, loaves of bread, loose change and knick-knacks? This could be the first thing you notice when you come home. Is it disheartening to see this clutter?
Be ruthless. Kitchen surfaces should be completely clutter free. Put utensils, pots, pans, cups and glasses away after they’ve been washed and dried. Food should be stored in cupboards or the fridge, fruit should go in the fruit bowl and knick-knacks stored in a tub and put away in a drawer.
Reclaim your kitchen and it will encourage you to enjoy what you are meant to do in a kitchen, cook!
Sort out books! We’ve all got lots of books that like to migrate from their proper place to any surface around the home. Begin by auditing your collection. Any books you have read and will not read again, set to one side. Then, restock bookshelves in alphabetical order of author. Only books you are reading should live on your bedside or coffee table.
Recycle any books you don’t want - give them to charity or Tescos, where they run a book swap
scheme. Check if you have any that may be worth something - some websites will buy books, they may be worth 50p or even ££’s.
Cull your clothes
Once again, ruthlessness is required with clothes! Go through your wardrobe, closets and drawers and take out items you won’t wear again. Separate any clothes you’ve not worn in the last couple of yearsstore those you want to keep in vacuum storage bags and donate the rest to charity. Cull those old, worn or mismatching socks and undies!
Hang, fold, roll items you are keeping and replace in some kind of order so going forward you can see what you have. The brilliant thing about sorting clothes is that you often find items you had forgotten you had and love!
Reorganise your loft
Lofts tend to be places where items are stored for years. So, go upstairs and item by item go through what is there. Only keep items of sentimental value or that you are certain you will use more than once a lifetime. Consider buying and installing shelves in the loft to eradicate piling things on top of each other and invest in large see-through storage boxes.
Decluttering Tech
We are all guilty of keeping old gadgets and cables. Go through that dreaded drawer of entangled cords and cull those forgotten gadgets of yesteryear! You may be able to sell some on Ebay, even as spare parts, or take them to your local recycling centre. Rob Bullock https://robbullockauthor.blogspot.com

Autumn Planning
by Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteer
The plotters have been hard at work thinking, in between rain showers, about what should be done before autumn slips in and we realised that our bee container roof had been leaking for too long. The repair was long overdue but it’s tucked away near the orchard and has been neglected by past administrations. We tried to find someone capable of making it wind and watertight, not many want such a small job, but the work is now done and the bees and their keepers are happy once again!
Sadly, our ‘orchards end’ building is still without electricity since we can’t afford the £5,000 needed to repair the installation and make the upgrade essential for power and lighting. Grants are not readily available so we are planning and preparing for when we can afford to carry out the work and keep our community groups operational and not too chilled in the meantime.
As usual, new ideas brought new challenges and our very overgrown Hawthorn hedge has given us a really tough problem. This ancient boundary is in need of reducing in height and width reducing, a system called ‘pleaching’ or, in more modern terms, ‘layering’ is needed. It is a haven for wildlife, flowers every year and produces lots of cover and feed for breeding birds. It’s also a very expensive boundary to maintain, it usually just gets a trim each year. The committee is looking at ways to carry
out the work needed as it’s an asset that needs preserving, for the benefit of wildlife and the community.
Once the community garden and wildlife area were completed, we submitted an article to the National Allotment Society and were pleased that the project was given a two page spread in the National brochure. We are very fortunate to receive such a prestigious acknowledgment of our scheme and the work of our volunteers.
We have started discussions with the Salford Rangers to see if we can establish a wildlife corridor around our site boundary. The plan is to try to improve the number and frequency of wildlife activities around the whole site and increase the number of safe habitats for animals and birds that need conservation in our urban landscape. This will take time and careful planning but, as everyone knows, these matters are well within the scope of our ‘tea and biscuit’ talents...to be continued!
With the topsy-turvey weather we didn’t know how our harvest would turn out so it was a real bonus to have a prolific tomato crop with a selection of Sungold, Sweet Cherry, Gardeners Delight and Roma (plum type) tomatoes all doing well. The bean crop was a surprise and we have apple trees hanging heavy with fruit. The blackberry bush has also cropped beyond expectation and just in its first year since planting. The only real loss has been the fig tree where the figlets came too late to mature and will not ripen. Overall, it’s been a good season.

Pride in Lleyton BOOGIE BINGO!
Lleyton is a young Salford lad born with the very rare life limiting illness “Niemann Pick Disease Type C”, also known as childhood dementia. We organise fundraisers to help raise awareness for this disease that few people know about and to raise funds to help Lleyton and his parents make those special memories while Lleyton is well enough. We also donate to the NPUK which is the small charity that helps families with Niemann Pick Diseases. Method
Ultimate Comfort Sausage and Bean Bowl
Give sausage, mash and beans an autumnal makeover. A simple comforting dish for all the family!
Preparation time: 5 mins
Cooking time: 35 mins
Serves: 4
Ingredients
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 2 onions finely sliced
• 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped
• 8 pork sausages
• 400g tin chopped tomatoes
• 2 tsp Dijon mustard
• 175ml chicken or vegetable stock
• 420g tin baked beans
• Mashed potato, to serve
Heat half the oil in a lidded saucepan over a medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for 8-10 minutes until slighlty browned all over.
Add the onions and fry for 6-8 minutes until softened. Then stir in the garlic and fry for 2 more minutes.
Add the tin of tomatoes, mustard and stock.
Season with pepper and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, adding the beans after 5 minutes. Cover and cook for 5 more minutes until the sausages are cooked through. Check for seasoning.
Finally, serve over creamy mashed potato.
Options:
Add finely diced carrot and roughly chopped red peppers and fry off with the onions. You can also add herbs such as rosemary and thyme, adding it with the garlic.
