The longer days give us so much more time to venture out into the community and enjoy ourselves. There are plenty of summer markets, fairs, festivals, walks and kids activities. Fruit picking starts again mid-June. Plus, with the end of another academic year, we can look forward to a more relaxed routine and going on our summer holidays.
We’re lucky to have an abundance of green spaces, woodlands and country parks to explore - fantastic for walks, bike rides and entertaining the children.
If you love relaxing at home, read our ‘Patio Living’ feature and create yourself a stunning outdoor space where you can entertain, enjoy BBQs, bask in the sunshine or relax in the evening.

Damhouse, Astley CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
On August 10th, we invite you to join us in celebrating three decades of community spirit, preservation and heritage at Damhouse, a remarkable manor house nestled in the heart of Astley with a rich history dating back to 1595. But it is more than just a historic building; it is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the local community.
Damhouse was commissioned by Adam Mort, who also established a school and a chapel, truly leaving his mark on the community. Over the centuries Damhouse witnessed transformations. In 1650, Mort’s son extended the manor and it later served as an isolation hospital and then a general hospital. In 1994 the building and grounds were to be sold for demolition to the highest bidder. The residents of Astley rallied and formed Morts Astley Heritage Trust with the aim of retaining access to the open
space and preserving the historic building. Ten passionate residents embarked on a mission to save Damhouse and after 6 years had raised the funds to save the house. 30 years later the trust are still running the show with three original members still on the board.
Damhouse isn’t just a building, it is a hub for our community with a bustling vintage tea room, 17 acres of woodland brimming with wildlife and spacious rooms are available to hire for different functions.
On August 10th we will be celebrating the past 30 years of achievement with a family event in the grounds. Save the date! And follow us on facebook for upcoming information. You can also call the office for more details on 01942 876417
AGE UK SALFORD CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
Age UK Salford turned 50 in November 2023!
As one day isn’t enough to celebrate, the charity will commemorate this milestone during 2024.
They will host several celebrations in June and will round-off with a community conference in November.
The charity recently unveiled a special anniversary window mural at their head office on Church Street in Eccles featuring the faces of staff, volunteers, trustees, and service users.
They also welcome any fundraising initiatives by the local community in recognition of their anniversary and would be delighted if you would like to get involved and support them in anyway.
Maureen Jolley, Chair ofthe Board of Trustees said: “We want to take the opportunity of this special anniversary to shine a light on the work the charity and all it has achieved in just over 50 years and our future ambitions to continue to help people to age well.”
To find out more, and if you would like to contribute or take part in fundraising, read about it on the Age UK Salford website: www.ageuk.org.uk/salford
About Age UK Salford
Age UK Salford is an independent local charity, established over 50 years ago. The charity exists to improve later life for all older people in Salford, through the provision of support, advocacy and direct services.
The City of Salford and its Mayors
April this year marked the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the present City of Salford, although Salford first became a city in 1926. In 1974 there were changes in local government arrangements throughout the country, including the formation of Greater Manchester and its ten boroughs. Salford now included several other places that had existed independently from it in the County of Lancashire. These comprised two other Municipal Boroughs - “Eccles” and “Swinton and Pendlebury” and two Urban District Councils - “Irlam” and “Worsley”. This meant that three Mayors and two U.D.C. Chairs were reduced to one Mayor and there now existed quite a lot of spare mayoral chains and pendants, giving mayoresses, consorts and deputies a choice as to what to wear on ceremonial occasions.
There had been previous mergers of smaller townships e.g. in the mid-19th Century Salford had merged with Broughton, Pendleton and part of Pendlebury and in 1933 Little Hulton had merged with Worsley.
Salford became a Municipal Borough with its first Mayor in 1844. This was William Lockett who was previously Salford’s Boroughreeve, a position that dated back to the granting of Salford’s first Charter in 1230 and which disappeared a few years after the Mayor’s post was created. In 1892 Eccles had a “Charter Mayor”, William Slater Boddington, followed by a full-time Mayor William Chadwick Mather. In 1934 Swinton and Pendlebury followed suit with “Charter Mayor” Arthur Bennett and full-time Mayor John Bradley.
Ironically now having just one Mayor, in 2012 a new role of elected City Mayor was created in Salford, initially Ian Stewart till 2016 and since then and up until the time of writing Paul Dennet. This role is similar to the Council Leader in other authorities and involves political, strategic and community leadership of the City.
The original Mayor, normally elected annually by their peers, is now referred to as the “Ceremonial Mayor” and has duties connected with public appearances at local events, where the Mayor often wears the chain and pendant and sometimes mayoral robes. The Ceremonial Mayor represents the Crown and
so in 2022 proclaimed the Accession of the new King after the death of the Queen. They also chair Council Meetings.
To confuse us even more since 2015 Greater Manchester has also had an elected Mayor. Tony Lloyd was appointed as interim and since 2017, when he was elected, Andy Burnham has held the post. In Salford we now have three Mayors, although the two elected Mayors don’t appear in all the regalia of the Ceremonial Mayor. By the time you read this, not only will the Ceremonial Mayor have changed but elections will have been held for the other two Mayors.

From teenagers to seniors, here's why Reformer Pilates is the perfect exercise regimen for everyone.
LOW-IMPACT
First and foremost, Reformer Pilates is low-impact, making it suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Unlike high-intensity workouts that can be hard on joints and muscles, Pilates on the reformer machine provides gentle yet effective resistance training. This means that even those with existing injuries or conditions can safely engage in Pilates exercises to improve their strength and mobility without risking further strain or injury.
CUSTOMISABLE
Reformer Pilates offers customisable exercises that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of different age groups. FOCUS ON CORE STABILITY
A key benefit of Reformer Pilates is its focus on core stability and alignment, which are essential for maintaining optimal function and preventing injuries as we age. By strengthening the deep abdominal muscles and stabilising the spine, Pilates helps improve posture, balance and overall body awareness, which are crucial for maintaining independence and vitality in later life.
FLEXIBILITY AND MOBILITY
Reformer Pilates promotes flexibility and joint mobility, which tend to decline with age if not actively maintained. The gentle stretching and lengthening movements performed on the reformer machine help improve range of motion and alleviate stiffness, making everyday activities such as bending, reaching and walking easier and more comfortable for individuals of all ages.
HOLISTIC WELLBEING
Reformer Pilates offers mental benefits that are particularly valuable as we age. The mind-body connection fostered through focused breathing and mindful movement promotes relaxation, stress reduction and improved cognitive function. This holistic approach to fitness not only enhances physical well-being but also supports mental and emotional resilience, helping individuals of all ages maintain a positive outlook and quality of life.
CONCLUSION
Reformer Pilates stands out as the perfect exercise modality for all age groups due to its accessibility, adaptability and holistic approach to fitness. SUMMER IN SALFORD
If you fancy a walk in the park this summer, Salford has more than 60 to choose from.
The oldest is Peel Park, which includes Salford Museum and Art Gallery. Opened in 1846, it was the first truly public park in England, and was recently restored to its Victorian glory. The park is also part of the 33 mile long Irwell Sculpture Trail, from Salford Quays to Bury. Find full details of the trail at www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk.
Nearby Kersal Wetlands, off Littleton Road is a haven for birds and part of Salford’s second flood basin.
Further up the Irwell river valley, Clifton Country Park has 48 hectares of open space as well as the remains of the Wet Earth Colliery, sunk in 1740. The park’s play area is great for disabled children, with wheel friendly surfaces, a basket seat swing, accessible roundabout and picnic benches. Look out for the giant swing, climbing frame with monkey bars, ropes and slides and animal themed springies. The park café welcomes dogs and offers a tasty menu of hot drinks, soup and snacks. Open Monday to Sunday, 9.30am-3.30pm
In Walkden, Blackleach Country Park, just half a mile from town centre, is a haven for birds and other wildlife and a peaceful picnic spot. Parr Fold Park, off Walkden Road, is a classic Victorian park with landscaped gardens, open lawns, tennis courts, an outdoor gym, skate park and a children’s play area. Visit their new cafe open Mon to Fri: 10am-5pm and Sat to Sun: 9am-5pm.
Dukes Drive in Monton and the adjacent former railway lines (known as ‘the looplines’) is great for a countryside walk to Worsley Woods and back down the Bridgewater Canal. Why not enjoy a stop-off at one of the many cafes, restaurants or bars in Worsley and Monton.
The Salford Rangers run free organised activities in the parks, from bat walks to conservation sessions, health walks to den building. Find out what’s on for all ages over the summer at: www.salford.gov.uk/parks www.visitsalford.info www.peelparksalford.info

Clients ask what a court would consider to be a fair division of property and pensions on divorce. It can be difficult to give a straightforward answer to this simple question.
The rules that courts apply to the division of the assets (property, bank accounts, investments, pensions, cars, jewellery etc.) on divorce give a great deal of flexibility as to outcomes and, unlike most European countries (including Scotland), there are no set rules about shared property. Courts are obliged to look to the resources available to both parties (now and in the future), their needs, the needs of any children, contributions to the marriage, length of the marriage, the ages of the parties, incomes, and the conduct (bad behaviour) of the parties. The rules aim to provide flexibility, but flexibility can lead to uncertainty.
On the issue of ‘contributions’, which include nonfinancial contributions to the family, it is certainly not the case of parties getting back what they put into a marriage in terms of money. In most cases, contributions are seen as equal.
On the issue of ‘conduct’ the reason for the breakdown of the marriage is largely not relevant and conduct is only considered when it is either directly related to the couple’s finances or so serious that it would be impossible and unfair to ignore it.
The starting point is that matrimonial assets should be shared equally and in most marriages of any length ending in divorce, an equal division is often the fair outcome.
Fair’s Fair on Divorce
There are, however, factors that will give a different outcome. Take for example, a short marriage for a young couple with no children where one party provides most of the assets at the outset. Would it be fair to divide the assets equally?
Contrast that couple’s circumstances with a couple approaching retirement where there has been a long marriage with adult children and one of the parties contributed most of the assets when they met 30 years ago, but they have the same needs on retirement. Would it be fair to take account of the initial contribution?
The same rules apply to every marriage ending in divorce regardless of the ages of the parties and their financial circumstances and were written to provide ‘fair’ and flexible outcomes. The intention is to provide a bespoke financial resolution in early course.
To advise on achieving fair outcomes that meet current and future needs, there must be a disclosure of what is available for sharing, a complete and honest assessment of needs, and how those needs arise.
Advice from well-qualified family solicitors with a wealth of experience is invaluable.

Patios are a wonderful way to take the inside out and let us make the most of the warm, light summer evenings.
The word ‘patio’ comes from the Spanish language and means ‘open to the sky’. Patios offer the ability to expand your living space into your garden. Here are a few ways you can make the most of your outdoor space.
Outdoor mats
An outdoor mat or rug can make your patio feel like a living space instantly at low cost and in a style that you love. You can also change this flooring easily and try something different which completely alters your outside ‘room’.
Choose an outside mat that you can wash down easily and is UV resistant as it will fade less quickly.
A lick of paint and paintings
Make your patio like a room by painting surrounding exterior walls in a colour that you have inside. Make sure you choose exterior paint! Hanging paintings, or other forms of art, can instantly transform this outdoor living space and you can change them as and when you want for instant effect.
Plant it up
As your patio is outside why not bring your garden into it. This will really bring it alive and you can
PATIO LIVING
choose plants with lovely evening scents.
Outdoor furniture
There is so much choice in outdoor furniture these days, ensuring that what you sit on outside is functional, comfortable and beautiful!
Light it up!
Nothing brightens up a space better than light and the choices of exterior lighting are many and can reflect your own style. Solar powered lighting can make outdoor lighting environmentally friendly, and they are wiring free.
Add some warmth
It may not be warm every evening, so buy some stylish throws and distribute them on the furniture for everyone to use. You could also invest in a fire pit or chiminea for extra heat on cooler nights.
Cook outside
We love a barbecue, so why not create a corner kitchen in your patio to serve up delicious food al fresco! This can be as cheap or expensive, or as temporary or permanent as you want - the options are endless nowadays!
As we head into summer, it’s the ideal time to enjoy the outside. Do that in style in the comfort of your own garden with a patio and bring the inside out!

The New Plotters Garden
by Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteerFollowing the very wet and cold winter of 23/24 we are looking forward to better conditions this summer. However, the committee of Tindal Street Allotment Group has not been idle and the refurbishment of the plotters garden is coming along well, with an abundance of new planting and revised layout.
When the vandalism to our wildlife area was inspected last year, the committee realised that the communal garden, of which it was a part, would need a radical makeover and refurbishment at the same time.
The total destruction of the wildlife pond resulted in the wreckage being excavated and the area being re-levelled and landscaped. New planters were installed; the treasurer found an unusual design and twelve planters now form a star shape in the middle of the site, all delightfully planted up with a variety of flowers. The committee is so happy with the scheme that it has been entered into the ‘Britain in Bloom’ programme, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
Whilst digging, an old brick footpath was found,
buried under tonnes of junk and wood-chip. This has been completely unearthed and forms a pleasant circular path around the central star.
A new wildlife area has been created on the previously overgrown and neglected dumping ground adjacent to the communal cabin. This area is now seeing some unexpected visitors and it’s hoped will attract many more as it establishes.
On the Macmillan allotment, the onions, shallots and potatoes are coming up very nicely in the beds and we hope for continued sunshine with much less rain this summer to ensure some good crop yields. Our blueberries, gooseberries and redcurrants are blossoming nicely and we hope to see a good result from them too.
The city council has re-affirmed its decision that all allotment sites be locked for security reasons.
Our community plots are continuing to prosper with the NHS and groups working together for health and wellbeing/sociability benefit, as well as the fresh food production that results.

Living Rooms The Art of Displaying
Our living room or lounge is the heart of our home where we relax, socialise, entertain and spend time with the people we love and enjoy quality alone time. In 2024 the art of displaying is on trend and offers the opportunity to show items that make up our memories. Here are some ways you can do this.
Create a gallery wall
Instead of keeping those cherished photos of our loved ones boxed up in the attic why not display them in your living room? One of the best ways to display artwork and photographs is by hanging them on a wall, and one of the best ways to do this is to create a gallery wall.
Planning your gallery wall is essential. Gather the photos, prints, paintings and pictures together on a large flat surface and decide how to arrange them to show them in their best light. Consider buying matching frames and work out what looks best where, using the general rule that frames should be kept around four centimetres or two inches apart.
Built-in shelving
Shelving comes in many choices, whether it be alcove shelving or corner shelves, a single impact shelf or a hanging shelving unit, there is a style that suits every taste. By choosing the one that matches your needs, the shelves become an integral part of the display and can make a statement.
Free standing shelves
These offer a degree of flexibility that built-in
shelves don’t. If you do not like them in one part of your living space, you can simply move them. If you want to add to them, that’s quick and easy. As with built-in shelves, free standing ones can also be statement pieces. You can choose from functional modern designs to traditional antique pieces that look great even before you’ve utilised them.
Bookcases
Not only useful for storing your books, bookcases can also offer a versatile, attractive alternative to shelving, and because they often have features such as small drawers, and cupboards they can be extremely useful as well as a good way to display.
Mantelpieces
A traditional feature in older homes, in modern living spaces they tend to be omitted. So, why not install your own mantelpiece whether you have a fire or not. It can become an attractive feature in its own right and a perfect way of displaying in your living room.
Sideboards
Finally, sideboards were traditionally used to store your crockery and cutlery, these days they offer an excellent storage solution and a good way to exhibit your photos, knick knacks and ornaments. They can be modern or traditional, old or new but can be statement pieces in their own right.
