Adopting older children and siblings When people think of adopting, they often imagine a baby becoming part of their family. And sometimes that will happen – if the circumstances are right for the child and the adopters. But at an early stage of your adoption journey, you will get asked if you would be willing to adopt an “older” child or a sibling group. Children aged 4+ find it harder to find families willing to adopt them. They may have spent a long time in unstable environments or in different foster placements - and we are looking for families that could open their heart, and home, to them. These children have so much to offer; and while it might seem that adopting a pre-schooler would mean missing out on some of those baby moments,

Georgia’s Children of the World supporting
HARPER’S ARMY Harper was diagnosed with high-risk aggressive, stage 4 neuroblastoma in April 2023. She has undergone chemotherapy, with countless transfusions, high dose chemo and stem cell transplant, which led to her being intubated in PICU. She then had radiotherapy, finishing just before Christmas. She has been so poorly, but digs deep and comes back fighting. She managed Christmas at home with her family and is now starting immunotherapy, which parents, Jenny and Adam, hope will finish in July. Following this, Harper is hoping to go to America for further treatment to increase survival rates. There is a treatment called DFMO, which has just been approved by the FDA in America. This is a massive step forward for Neuroblastoma; although not available in the UK, it has given Jenny and Adam

hope. The family are in talks with Penn State Hospital, who have been amazing, and she will hopefully begin her 2 year plan by September this year. There has been so much help from family, friends and strangers to fundraise to get Harper to America, which the family are eternally grateful for. Through this they are now in a position to pay for treatment. G-Fest and Georgia’s Children have also been very supportive in helping Harper’s Army. Initially the money raised was to help get Harper her treatment, but with the change in plan and the family now going for the approved one in America, it will be used to support other children and families in hospital with similar conditions to Harper and complex heart conditions like Georgia. Experience the thrill of singing in a large choir with Salford Choral Society as we celebrate our 75th anniversary season. We’re looking for new members to join our friendly choir of around 100 people - aged from 18 to 80-plus. We sing classical and modern pieces under the leadership of our inspirational music director Tom Newall, who makes every rehearsal fun and helps us sound amazing.
75 YEARS OF MUSIC-MAKING The choir was founded in 1947 with the aim of sharing the joy of choral music in all its aspects. We perform four concerts a year at top class venues like the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), supported

by professional musicians and soloists. Our 75th anniversary concert will be Mozart’s Requiem on 16 March 2024, 7.30pm, at the RNCM.

Why Hearing Tests are as important as Eye Tests We don’t often think of our ears and hearing when we’re looking after our health and getting checkups. We know we should have a sight test every two years and a dentist check up every six months, but our poor old ears hardly ever get a look-in, if at all. According to Age UK, around 40% of people aged over 50 in the UK have some form of hearing loss. Most people who experience hearing loss as they get older do so because of wear and tear to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. There are also other factors, such as regular exposure to loud noise, a history of middle ear disease, or a family history of hearing loss. Good hearing is an important part of a good quality of life. Yet 48 million people in the UK have never had a hearing test. Even those who are aware that they have trouble hearing often wait for years before they have their hearing examined and receive appropriate help. That’s despite two-thirds of us knowing someone who is suffering from untreated hearing loss. How do you know if you need your hearing tested? Hearing loss tends to be gradual, and you may not believe you have a problem with your hearing, but often it’s the case that those around you think you might. Here are some symptoms of potential issues with your hearing: l You need to keep turning up the volume on the TV or radio and those watching or listening with you think it’s far too loud.

l You need to use captions or subtitles when watching TV so that you can make out the dialogue. l In conversation, you frequently ask people to repeat themselves and speak more slowly or loudly. l You sometimes withdraw from conversations or avoid social settings that are likely to be loud (e.g. music concerts, crowded pubs etc)
If any (or all) of the above apply to you, then it’s time to get a hearing test. How to get a hearing test l You can get a free hearing test on the NHS. A GP may refer you to a hearing specialist (audiologist) who can do the test. l You can take an online hearing test e.g. from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (rnid.org.uk) - these are not the same as a full hearing test carried out by a hearing specialist but it’s a quick and reliable way to find out if you need one. l Lots of chemists and opticians offer hearing tests which are often free, but you'll normally have to pay for any treatment you might need (such as hearing aids). It’s generally recommended that healthy adults have a hearing test at least once a decade, but for those who are aged 60 or over, you really should have one every year. Hearing tests are easy, quick and painless, and will help to protect your hearing or lead to a diagnosis that will give you the help you need to restore it. Rev. St. Vincent Beechey The First Rector of Worsley St Vincent Beechey (far left, seated) at the wedding of his granddaughter Mabel Champion Jones, in 1898.

y the time that St. Mark’s Church, Worsley, was consecrated in July 1846, the Earl and Countess of Ellesmere were already much engaged in the education and wellbeing of children. So it is no surprise that in 1850 they approached a clergyman to become the first rector of the new parish of Worsley. That person was the Rev. St. Vincent Beechey who remained in post until 1872. But what of his name? He was one of fifteen children born to Sir William Beechey (though the exact number is speculative!). Sir William R.A. became the court painter to the Hanoverians from 1805 and painted many of the most famous people of his time. One such was Adml. John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent. Sir William’s wife, Anne Phyllis Jessop (his second), sought permission from the Earl to use his name for her then unborn child. Thus in August 1806 the boy was named St. Vincent. St. Vincent Beechey (or SVB) was educated in Boulogne and Kent, and matriculated at Caius College, Cambridge, in 1823. Ordained into the ministry in 1829, he first served as curate in two parishes in Kent and Norfolk. Then in 1840 he became Vicar of Thornton in Lancashire. His desire to improve the education of the young (already evident whilst in Norfolk) went with him to Lancashire, when he moved with his family (2 stepchildren and 3 to his wife) to Fleetwood.
Frederick Woods Ommanney, 19th September 1836 at Hilgay, Norfolk (his second parish, 18311840). St. Vincent Beechey was, at that time, Chaplain to Lord Grantley. Mary Ann was the daughter of the late William Jones, Esq., formerly Marshal of the King’s Bench. It was whilst at Thornton that he established Rossall School in 1844. The Earl of Ellesmere was one of the first donors to the new school. There he came to know well William Wordsworth [Wordsworth had, at that time, two grandsons at the school]. He first met officially Queen Victoria in 1847 on her brief overnight visit to the area, at which he presented a welcoming address. (As a young boy, he had met the Princess Victoria and had played with her whilst his father was painting at court!). In July 1850, at the invitation of the Countess of Ellesmere, he accepted the Perpetual Curacy of Worsley, encouraged no doubt by the doubling of his income and the promise of a new vicarage to be built for his family. The Countess wrote: Dear Sir: Lord Ellesmere is not well enough to write himself, but he wishes me to say that the living of Worsley will be vacant in three months, and if you will accept it he will double the income and build a house for your family. would think, and it increases the risk of your wishes not being fully reflected and sufficient provision not being made to those most important to you.
There are many reasons someone might not do a will. The most common reason people gave was that they are too busy and just haven’t got round to it yet. I’m sure we’ve all been there, we have a ‘to do list’ and the tasks we are not looking forward to get left at the bottom.
Having your wishes properly documented could carry even more significance if you have young children; are cohabiting with your partner, but are not married; or you have stepchildren or are in a second marriage with children from a previous relationship. The rules of intestacy just do not consider the complexities of modern family life.
Other reasons stated for not having a will is that people have never considered doing one or they do not believe they have anything worth inheriting. When the figures are further broken down, circa 75% of those aged 35-54 do not have a will and, I would argue, this is probably one of the most important periods to have a will in place. It is during this stage of life that we are most likely to have dependants whom we would want looked after and would also find ourselves with the greatest financial commitments. In the absence of a will, an estate would be distributed in accordance with the rules of intestacy. These rules are not always as straight forward as you 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP

When the last meeting of 2023 was convened, we decided to move our cuttings to a warmer home into our greenhouse at home. The polytunnel can be very cold during frosts and the cuttings are quite tender so we thought we could look after them more easily at the back of our house. This was a very bad mistake!! We hadn’t realised how powerful the winter storms would be and paid the price by losing a quarter of the greenhouse roof in the first blow. We quickly covered the hole with a tarpaulin and fixed it in place but nature took this as a challenge, sent another storm and ripped another part of the roof off. Undeterred we moved all of the plants back to the polytunnel and fleeced them over. The Gods were not impressed and sent another windy message and removed the rest of the greenhouse roof! We now have a three sided monster, with no doors, as a reminder of our puny attempt to control our destiny. We will remove the remains to be recycled, when the wind and rain allow. On a much more pleasant note, our new kitchen on the plot is now complete, along with a new hot and cold tap and reinforced flooring to replace the rotted part, thanks to our willing and skilled volunteers. 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
The wildlife garden is showing the first signs of the autumn plantings we made in the donated collars and our relocated bird feeders are well visited now that they are sitting high in the bare Fig tree. Our parsnips did very well in the wet and gloomy 2023 growing season and were a welcome addition to our festive plates. They grew so well that we needed to pass the surplus around our friends and we hadn’t realised just how popular they are so, 2024 will see them planted early and in profusion, in the hope of an even better result this year.

Pet Insurance: What should I consider? Pet insurance helps you cover the cost of veterinary treatment for your animal companions. It’s a wise decision to invest in some insurance, just in case there is an unexpected outlay due to illness or injury. It provides some reassurance that your pet will always be able to receive treatment and live a healthy life for as long as possible. Check the coverage options available. Basic plans tend to cover accidents and illnesses, whilst more comprehensive plans include preventative care that can include dental treatment and alternative therapies. Make sure you understand what’s included and excluded in the coverage as some policies may exclude pre-existing conditions or have specific omissions for breeds that are prone to particular illnesses or hereditary conditions. Consider the age and health of your pet as some providers have age restrictions and premiums may increase as your pet gets older. Enrol your pet when they are young and healthy to ensure the best possible rate. Check the policy is renewable for the entire lifetime of your pet as some policies may end at a certain age or if your pet develops a chronic condition. Some companies will also impose a waiting period before coverage takes effect, coverage may not start immediately after you have enrolled on a plan. Most insurance comparison sites will show you the pros and cons of specific insurance coverage so you can compare the cost of the premiums from different providers. efficiently with a good track record of customer service. Veterinary practices may offer some insurance plans but still compare the cost with other policies. Also, find out how the deductible is applied, whether it applies per incident, per year, or per condition. The claim submission process can also vary, some companies offer direct billing with veterinary practices and others require you to cover the cost upfront and submit a claim for reimbursement. You may need to find out what percentage of the veterinary costs will be reimbursed by the insurance company after the deductible is met. This can vary from 70% to 90%, so you need to be prepared to pay something toward veterinary care, but some of the costs will be refunded by the insurance company. Some companies also have a maximum lifetime payout, a policy that limits the total expenditure over the course of your pet’s life or within a policy year. Buying an insurance policy for your pet needs careful consideration. The cost of insurance will vary between insurers and can depend on a range of factors. St Patrick's Day 17th March
Guinness Chocolate Puddings Indulgent, slightly boozy chocolate puddings. Perfect for St Patrick's Day, 17th March. Preparation time: 25 mins Cooking time: 18 mins Add 1 hr chilling time Serves 4 Ingredients • 150g unsalted butter, plus extra for the ramekins • 200g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), roughly chopped. • 90g golden caster sugar • 3 large eggs • 90ml Guinness • Good quality chocolate, vanilla or salted caramel ice cream to serve. 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Method Butter four 9 x 5cm ramekins and put away to chill. Place the butter, chocolate and a generous pinch of salt into a heatproof bowl. Set over a small pan of barely-simmering water and stir until melted, then remove from the heat and leave to cool a little. Place the sugar and eggs into a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric whisk until pale, doubled in volume and thick enough to leave a trail. Gently fold in the melted chocolate and the Guinness. Spoon the mixture into the ramekins, then chill in the fridge for 1 hour. In the meantime, place a baking tray on the top shelf of the oven and preheat to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Place the chilled ramekins on the hot baking tray and bake for 18 mins. Remove from the oven and leave to stand for a minute. The centres will sink a little. Pop a scoop of ice cream into the hollow and serve.
