THE PLOTTERS I can confirm that we are up to nothing more sinister than growing fruit and veg for our families on our allotments at Tindall Street, Peel Green. This site has been in production for over 100 years and the Chairman of the allotment society, Don Booth, has 47 years of experience in digging, feeding and mulching his plot. There are 26 allotment sites in the City and under Dons’ Chairmanship, several new sites have been opened and other sites are to be re-opened. If you are interested in a plot, anywhere in the City then email carolyn.collins@me.com with your contact details. The allotments are in demand for growing healthy crops, good exercise and helping community inclusion. Plotters share ideas and experiences and there is a wide range of ages so that old heads and young enthusiasm are able to mix.
We have beekeepers, pigeon fanciers, crop specialists and a range of Community involvements where police, Community Payback, the NHS, Macmillan Cancer Support, Incredible Edible Salford all work side-by-side. The Community Plot took over a new area in October 2014 and it looked like this:-
We worked on it over winter and transformed the plot to this!
If you would like to hear about the growing year and what you can do, whatever size plot you have, then look out for us in future issues of ‘Live it Local’ and ‘On Our Doorstep’. Written by Geoff Hamilton: allotment volunteer for Macmillan Cancer Support

Summertime is Festival Time! Summer is coming and so is Monton Festival which this year celebrates its 15th anniversary on American Independence Day. This year Monton Festival is on Saturday 4th July, starting at the later time of 11am and running till 5pm. Nearly 80 stalls have already signed up to sell everything from clothes and jewellery to crafts, toys and plants alongside the village’s vibrant, independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Plus local businesses will be joining in the fun with their own stalls and special offers. Joining this year will be Monton’s new Turkish restaurant La Turka, which has transformed the former Passage to India, and Bodega, Monton’s first champagne bar, located at the former Post Office. The ever popular Bar on the Green, organised by Monton volunteers, will be popping back up in the Old Man’s Shelter on Monton Green to sell Pimms, beers and wine to thirsty festival goers. There will be live entertainment from a range of bands and singers, including up and coming singer Jess Kemp who has just released her first single “Star” which is now available on iTunes. The traditional fun fair will be back for another whirl of its rides, stalls and candy floss. Monton Village Community Association, which organises the festival along with sponsorship from George Parish and sons, Miller Metcalfe and City West Housing Trust, will be unveiling a new range of “Love Monton” merchandise. Let’s just say coffee breaks will never be the same again! Save the date and join us on Saturday 4th July, 11am to 5pm. For full details, visit the MVCA website: www.montonvillage.org.uk

Worsley Village Summer Fete 18th July to 30th July 2015 Organised by the Worsley Village Community Association In 1999 Salford Council wanted to run some new events at The Court House and Worsley Village Community Association, who were a very new group then, were asked to get involved. We have carried on since then arranging Quiz Nights, Boat Trips, Afternoon Teas and Lunches, Art and "Authors in The Library" throughout the year. Every summer we organise the Worsley Festival. It doesn’t seem 15 years since we started our Summer Festivals. We are looking forward to this year’s - we have a full programme this summer, mostly held in Worsley Village Library and we look forward to seeing you at some of these.

Fit for
Summer If you didn’t manage to stick to your resolutions, NOW is the time to get back on track. With summer just around the corner, it’s a great incentive to get fit and to improve your health. Be it getting in shape, improving fitness levels or adopting healthier eating habits... there is a host of local businesses who can offer good advice. In this issue, we invite a few to share some top tips to help us feel healthier and look healthier this summer!
Fitness Tips for a
Healthier & Happier Summer with Worsley Park Leisure Club
1. Find Motivation During the tough times (and there will be tough times) you will need to dig deep and remember why you started. This can either be some clothes that you want to fit into, an upcoming holiday or just personal goals set by yourself. It will be a lot harder to snooze that alarm in the morning or to eat that cake if you have motivation. 16 LIVE IT LOCAL
2. Nutrition
3. Training - Intensity!
Possibly the hardest factor when it comes to weight loss and gaining lean muscle. You hear so many contradicting theories that you don’t know what to believe so lets keep it simple....
Intensity - it’s a word that cannot be used enough. It doesn’t matter whether you run, weight train or do classes, the intensity needs to be kept high to consistently self improve. If it starts getting easy, up the weight, increase the distance and just keep going.
Our bodies like protein but NOT carbohydrates or sugars, although they may taste good! Protein helps to build muscle and provide energy whereas carbs and sugars, when not used, get stored as fat. You also want to be eating little and often to be keeping your metabolism burning and to keep your energy levels high throughout the day.

Ladies, Get Fit for Summer!
As summer arrives many of you will have already cast off the winter woollies and jumped into your summer outfits but others will be worried that ditching baggy, coverall coats and jumpers will expose the extra pounds that crept on during the short cold days when warmth and comfort were more important. Ladies, the good news is that there is still time to make a difference because for most, your holiday is still 6 to 8 weeks off. Core 30 is a specialised Ladies Only fitness and weight loss centre where new members can take the 6-week Fast Start Programme. We know that these initial days are crucial; they can be the hardest and that’s why this programme includes at least 1 weekly 1-2-1 session with your personal instructor to get and keep you on track. Just like you needing to shed the excesses of the past, Core 30 has spent the last few months shedding the old with a total refurbishment creating a unique & large adaptive workout space. Key has been our focus on the proven concept of specialist fitness machines designed for women whilst updating the rationale of the workout to reflect the latest sports science research. We have significantly expanded the space available for group exercise and introduced new CV machines and Fatloss Vibration Plates.
Now it’s your turn, we have loads of tips for toning-up but here are just 4 to get you started:
1. Start NOW, not tomorrow, tomorrow never comes. 2. Do it because “they” said you couldn’t – STOP listening to those little voices saying things like – “I’ll look silly and show myself up”, “I haven’t got the time/energy”. Ignore them. You CAN do it – Do it for YOU. 3.
Don’t run before you walk. If you are currently not exercising, you need a controlled and gradual build up programme.
4. Keep a food diary. Write down absolutely everything you consume and don’t share it with family or friends. That way you will be honest with yourself – that could be just a bit scary! Core 30 will help you with all these starting with No 1. Pick up the phone and call us on 0161 401 1794 NOW; even if it’s the middle of the night because you can leave your name and number and we’ll call you back – how easy is that? And if you still need a reason, join Core 30 during July and pay nothing until August!

10 Tips to a Healthier You this Summer by Juliesweigh2fitness (formally Rosemary Conley classes) 8. Exercise: 10,000 steps per day as recommended
by the British Heart foundation, most people only achieve 5,000. By adding a daily walk of 30 to 60 minutes can help you lose weight even if you don't change your diet... so what are you waiting for? or you could join my classes below.
1. Portion Control: Statistically our plates have got bigger over the last 10 years, both at home and in restaurants and we are filling them! Use a smaller plate and fill ½ with veg/salad, ¼ protein and ¼ carbohydrates.
9. A programme that suits you: There are lots of different programmes around - it’s important you find one that suits you and your lifestyle so you will stick to it.
2. Set Small Goals To Achieve: Break down your goal into smaller goals, set a date in which you will achieve the smaller goals to get to your final destination. Start with weekly goals for the first 4 weeks, then month, then onwards from there. Reward yourself when you hit a goal, i.e. a hair or beauty treat or a new item of clothing.
I run exercise classes with various Diet options which include NHS diet, British Heart Foundation, Low Fat and Sugar control diet, and a NEW 9 day cleansing programme “Forever C9” available to order at class. Lastly, we have a NEW Metabolic Diet & Training programme to work with your body. Call, text or email me for more details.
3. Eat Smaller Meals More Often: Keep your metabolism burning by eating small healthy meals; approximately 200-250 calories, 5-6 times per day.
10. Start NOW, just DO IT !!!
4. Food Diary/Log: Write it down EVERYTHING you eat and drink each day for a week, you will be surprised at the little snacks /tastes/bites of foods you are having when you write it down and it is in black & white.
Weight Loss & Fitness in one class All ages , all abilities
5. Test your hunger: Ask your self the question on a scale of 1 to 10 “How hungry are you?” 1 being not hungry at all and 10 starving you would eat anything. We sometimes eat because we are bored or emotions cause us to eat, or you may just be dehydrated. 6. Drinking water: Drink 2 litres / 6-8 glasses per day. Stay hydrated as we can lose 2 litres of fluid per day and we need to replace it. 7. Remind yourself WHY: What is your WHY? WHY you want to lose weight/tone or increase fitness - this will keep you motivated.

CARDWELLS CELEBRATE NATIONAL SUCCESS
Andrew Cardwell (right), presented with his award for “Highest Achievement”
Property expert from Bolton has won a prestigious professional award.
Andrew Cardwell, director at Cardwells Independent Estate Agents, won the “Highest Achievement” accolade in the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFOPP) commercial property exams. Andrew received the award for achieving the highest results nationwide in the exams which he took last year. A glittering award ceremony took place at the beginning of June 2015 at Warwick Castle.
Father of two, Andrew, said he had been surprised and delighted to receive the nomination earlier this year, and was thrilled to represent Cardwells on the evening. “To actually win the award was an extraordinary surprise and a great honour. I am very proud of this award but consider this as much my colleagues’ award as it is mine”. Andrew has been a director of Cardwells for the past seven year and has worked for the company since he was 16. High flying Andrew holds a first class honours degree in Management and a first class masters degree specialising in Small Business Management, in addition to a range of professional property qualifications. The “Matchstick Man” Part I : The Early Years
Self Portrait (1925) The L. S. Lowry Collection
I first met L.S. Lowry in the early 1950s when I was a schoolboy at the Salford Technical High School, located in the Peel Building that is now the core of present-day Salford University. The meeting was not, sadly, with the great man himself, but with his paintings in the nearby Art Gallery. In those times the skyline of Salford and Manchester was dominated by countless mill and factory chimneys, all belching plumes of black smoke into an already toxic atmosphere. The nearby River Irwell meander was equally black, with pollution that can only be imagined, detergent foam floated on its surface and the day of the week could be predicted by its changing colours. A sight of the sun was rare, generally a smog gloom prevailed. When I saw this scenery, and its inhabitants, captured by Lowry in his paintings in the Gallery my teenage mind was mystified. Why on earth would anyone want to paint such a landscape? Seemingly Lowry, in his early years, had thought the same... “At first I detested it, and then, after some years, I got pretty interested in it, then obsessed by it. I watched the scene (workers leaving a mill after their shift), which I’d looked at many times without seeing - with rapture”. Lowry had discovered his mission in life. He had come to realise that no painter had ever found inspiration, or desire, in depicting the Industrial North and its people. Lowry would be that painter. Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) was born in Stretford. His father, Robert, was a Clerk for a 24 LIVE IT LOCAL
property company; his mother, Elizabeth, was a Teacher. By his own account Lowry had an unhappy childhood, with a dominant mother (who would have preferred a daughter) and a mild, compliant father. Though affectionate to his son, Robert was described by Lowry as “a cold fish” - such was his retiring nature. The family moved to Rusholme, then a pleasant suburb, but in 1909 financial pressures forced a move to Pendlebury, in the midst of industry which the young Lowry, at first, detested. It was to be his home however, for the next 40 years! After leaving school, where he had shown little academic ability, Lowry began a career at the Pall Mall Company as a Rent Collector for domestic dwellings owned by the Company. In the evenings he took lessons in drawing and in 1905 he enrolled at the Manchester School of Art. There he was to meet a remarkable man Pierre Adolphe Vallette, a French Impressionist painter of some renown, who became his Tutor. Vallette had left France and chosen Manchester to make a living. His work includes many scenes of the city, rendered in sombre colours that evoke the damp and foggy reality of the times. He stimulated Lowry, who credited his teacher with inspiring Pierre Adolphe Valette Self portrait 1922 him in all his early work. In 1915 Lowry attended Salford Royal Technical College (the Peel Building), the Art School being on the top floor, until 1925 and it was here that he began to develop his distinctive style - what the art world calls these days... “Lowry-esque”. An early example of this “Coming From the Mill”, painted in 1917, shows the “matchstick” people that would come to make him famous.

Going to the Match: Crowds of fans flocking to Burnden Park
VE Day (1945:) A brighter scene with street parties and bunting
Much of his early work was in portraiture and he painted, amongst others, his mother in a sensitive study. He also executed a masterly self-portrait over which he agonised. When it was finally completed he evidently disliked what he had done and resolved never to do such ever again! Perhaps he considered it revealed too much of himself. That painting, and that of his mother, are in the current exhibition at the Lowry Gallery in Salford Quays. Lowry’s earlier works clearly demonstrate that we was very capable of creating conventional “artistic” subject matter and that he was far from being a mere “Sunday Painter” who could only produce simple (albeit unique) work.
many years later by the Professional Footballers’ Association for several million pounds and is presently on loan to the gallery for display. It contains, not surprisingly, thousands of “matchstick” people!
But fame, or any recognition, was to be painfully slow in manifesting itself. In 1927, the first indication that Lowry might amount to something, was when the Tate Gallery in London bought one of his paintings - “Coming Out of School”. This was the first notable purchase by a national art authority. In 1928, having been shown to be tardy by the Tate Gallery in not noticing local talent, Salford City Art Gallery made its first purchase of a Lowry work - “A Street Scene”. This painting was to become the foundation of the largest collection of Lowry paintings and sketches in the world, all the property of Salford, and now worth many millions of pounds. Possibly one of Lowry’s most famous paintings was also completed in 1928 - “Going to the Match”. Lowry loved to watch football, was an ardent fan of Manchester City FC, and regularly attended games at their former stadium, at Maine Road. But it was not that stadium that was the subject of the painting. Instead it was Burnden Park, the former home of Bolton Wanderers (perhaps City were facing Bolton that day?) “Going to the Match” was bought FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504
Lowry’s father died in 1932 leaving his bedridden mother in his care. His “day job”, remained rent collecting, an occupation which he was said to detest, but paradoxically, he was to continue until he was 65 years old, even though he later had no need of the income! An eccentric man, he was shy and secretive yet full of fun. He delighted in telling stories and happily misleading his friends, of which he made many throughout his life. When his mother died, in 1939, Lowry became depressed and reclusive, a state of mind perhaps illustrated by his painting “The Bedroom - Pendlebury”, a work done in 1940. He had a collection of clocks in his living room that were all set at different times. To some he said that it was because he did not want to know the real time, to others, that he did not want to be deafened by the sound of them all chiming at the same time! During the Second World War, Lowry became a Volunteer Fire Watcher, an important task during “The Blitz”, where he would be exposed to air raids and falling bombs. The War would become one of his most prolific painting periods. In 1943 he was appointed an Official War Artist, capturing the devastation of the period and the part that the population played. His painting “Going to Work” of 1943, captures wartime experience for ordinary people and is part of the collection in the Imperial War Museum. Another one of many such works is “Blitzed Site” (1942) and his final War work, “VE Day” (1945) which celebrates the end of the War in Europe.
