FUN DAY for Breast Cancer Sunday 21st August @ De La Salle Sports Club Local resident Gail Kirkham, 51, was devastated when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2013. Gail thought she had been bitten by an insect while enjoying a bike ride after she discovered a small red dot on her left breast. When the mark grew into a marble-size lump after just three days it was evident that something was seriously wrong. The ‘bite’ later revealed to be a cancerous tumour. Now in remission, Gail Kirkham is determined to fight back and help raise awareness and as much money as possible for the One Stop Breast Clinic at Salford Royal Hospital, where she was treated.
To date Gail has hosted a Celebrity Football Match, Tea Party, Charity Ball and Christmas Dance! This will be the fifth large event Gail has organised at De La Salle Sports Club. This summer the “999 Emergency Fun Day” will take place on Sunday 21st August, 10-5pm. It's going to be a fun packed day with Salford Radio DJ Ste Bollard providing the music and the commentary. There is entertainment for all the family - here are just some of the highlights: n Celebrity Football with Coronation Street stars coming out to play n Fairground n Stalls n Games n Pony Rides n Go Karts n Dancing & gymnastic displays and much more! An Exciting Four Months! Home Instead Senior Care, Salford have now been open in Swinton for four months and Susan Robinson, co-founder reports, “We have been overwhelmed with the interest we have had from families looking for help and support for their loved ones. We have met some wonderful people, both Clients and CAREGivers - some very special friendships have been forged already.” Susan continues…. ‘’We had an exciting time when the T.V. cameras arrived to film us on the 1st June to find out about our exceptional care options. We then had a fabulous time at our open day on the 15th June when the Ceremonial Mayor visited Colgran Lodge to cut the purple ribbon, declare Home Instead Salford ‘open’ and propose a toast!’’ Many of our clients, CAREGivers and families attended the event and we shared interesting conversation, a light buffet and bucks fizz!
At the moment Home Instead Salford are recruiting for several positions. “We have a gentleman looking for a companion to provide a little assistance getting dressed each morning and preparing breakfast and a lady looking for someone to share outings - perhaps to the swimming pool or to an afternoon tea dance. Michelle Corcoran, the Registered Care Manager at Home Instead, Salford explains that there are many vacancies waiting to be filled. Michelle is looking for dedicated, passionate CAREGivers who can spare a few hours a week to share experiences and offer support to our lovely seniors in Salford. ‘’We pay way above the living wage and our Clients are amazing. Motivation...
With contradicting theories posted daily on what you should eat, or what diet to follow, it’s not easy to know what to do!
Summer is almost upon us and we tend to lose motivation and head towards the beer gardens and ice cream vans rather than going to the gym. This is where ‘goal-setting’ is key.
Remember, what works for one person, won’t necessarily work for another, so there is no actual ‘right’ diet. However, there are a few basic rules you can stick to. By keeping your processed foods intake to a minimum, eating plenty of vegetables and sticking with a high protein and good fat diet, you are certain to look and feel better come summer.
Everybody has a goal, whether it is to achieve that ever escaping six-pack or get a PB on you’re 5k run. By setting weekly/fortnightly goals, you will be able to reach your main goal much faster. Training with a partner will also help greatly. You’ll be much less likely to have that beer or choc-ice if you have to admit it to your friend!
Training...

Mixing up your training will mean that you will be a lot less likely to get complacent. So by keeping sessions short and intense (HIIT) with a mixture

Home is where the heart is and that is where we all like to be My name is Michelle Corcoran and I have worked in the care sector, in and around Salford, for the majority of my career. I quite simply love my job and consider it a privilege to support the elderly, in their own home, in my own community. I am delighted that I have now secured the position of Registered Care Manager with Home Instead Senior Care, Salford. The ethos of the company is everything that I believe in - from a minimum of one hour visits to making sure our clients and CAREGivers are at the centre of everything we do. It is a real honour to work for a care company that is achieving ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ in all the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Inspections. Although our offices are based in Swinton, next door to the Humphrey Booth Centre on Worsley Road, we cover several areas in Salford including: Boothstown, Clifton, Eccles, Ellenbrook, Ellesmere Park, Irlams’o’th’height, Monton, Roe Green, Walkden, Worsley and beyond. A large percentage of my time is spent searching for the right type of CAREGiver and chatting to people about the services we offer.
We are totally focused on providing top quality care for older people, care which is tailored to the needs of individuals and which allows them to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life, for as long as possible. Our carefully chosen CAREGivers have a thirst for learning, a passion for caring and a desire to make a positive difference to the lives of people in our community. It is a prerequisite that our CAREGivers have natural empathy and compassion together with a healthy attitude to work. Home Instead Senior Care delivers in-depth professional, on-going training and as a result experience in the field of care is not mandatory. We are hoping to recruit in excess of 50 CAREGivers over the forthcoming months and I would urge anyone who has just a few hours to spare each week, to give me a call or pop into our offices for a chat…… the kettle is always on and we have biscuits at the ready! Working with people makes every day different some days are better than others - but there is always a part of each and every day, even a difficult day, when something takes place or something is said which makes my job very worthwhile and extremely rewarding. Each Home Instead Senior Care franchise office is independently owned and operated.

The Plotters: Summer Update Tindall Street: Summer is smiling on us this year and the crops are showing their appreciation of the fine days. My back is aching from watering from the butts but, that’s a small price to pay for the joy of seeing nature at it’s best and it’s good exercise anyway! Mossfield Allotments, Swinton: The site works are nearly complete and the committee is almost ready to make the first lettings. This will mean that individual plots can start to be worked this Summer and the bunkers can be filled with farmyard manure and woodchippings. The committee is on the look-out for a shipping container to store tools and equipment - any offers to the SAF secretary at Carolyn.Collins@me.com. There is to be a composting toilet installed on site, in a further effort to be environmentally sensitive and the committee intends to promote
the idea of ‘water-butt’ usage to avoid the use of drinking water for crops. If you’d like to ‘grow your own’ and register for a plot, please email SAF secretary, Carolyn Collins. The SAF Chairman (Don Booth,) the City Council and it’s officers have been instrumental in getting this derelict site back to a condition where it is productive again. Congratulations to them all!! Blackleach: The allotments are now in the process of being prepared for extension and plot improvement. This work will involve increasing the number of plots, improvements to access and new fencing, not all at one time, but if you are interested in a plot at this site and would like to be part of the planning and implementation then please contact the SAF secretary at Carolyn.Collins@me.com. Roman Fort at Castlefield
Roman Road...Roman Treasure The Roman Conquest of Britain in 43AD (the first incursion by Julius Ceasar in 55BC was short-lived), aimed to take possession of the whole Island. The conquest was rapid in the south with only Caractacus and Boudicca offering any major resistance. When it came to the North however, the Brigante tribe, which occupied present-day Lancashire and Yorkshire, it was a different matter; The Queen of the Brigantes, Cartimandua, was inclined to cooperate with the Romans and Brigantia became a “client state”. However, after she and her husband Venutius divorced, all changed. Venutius rebelled against the Romans, starting a period of spasmodic uprisings that were to last for over 100 years. So the north, unlike the pacified south, became a pattern of fortified towns protected by forts, walls and defence in depth. Roman legions were mostly based in the north and Hadrian’s Wall was built as much to keep the Brigantes in, as to keep the Picts and the Scotti out for fear they might combine.
THE ROAD Fortified towns in our area included Mamucium (Manchester), Deva (Chester), Ribchester (near Preston) and Coccium (Wigan). Manchester was a major communications centre. From the fort at Castlefield no fewer than six Roman roads radiated to other centres of Roman power that also included Eboracum (York) and Melandra Castle in the High Peak. Traces of some of those remain in the presentday - A6 and A57 roads that rest on Roman foundations! 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
It is the road that led to Coccium (Wigan) that is of particular interest to us locally. It left the Mamucium fort and settlement, crossed the nearby Irwell and headed toward the high ground of Hope and Buile Hill on Eccles Old Road. From there it proceeded across Ellesmere Park to Monton’s Three Sisters Park. The Park is so named for the springs that feed three ponds. It was at this point, in 2005, that an archaeological dig unearthed the road just a foot beneath the surface. It was in remarkably good condition, still paved with small stones and 23 feet wide with a double drainage ditch. From Monton the road ran across part of Worsley Golf course and Broadoak Park towards Leigh Road in Worsley. Almost parallel with that road, it crossed the Marriott Golf Course to meet what is now the East Lancs Road on its way to Atherton and Wigan. Clearly visible in 1984 on aerial photos, its Aggar (raised road) and ditches were destroyed in the landscaping of the golf course. It was, typically for the Romans, virtually straight all the way from Manchester to Wigan. Think of the Roman Legions that built it and kept the peace along it for 300 years...
THE TREASURE But that is not the end of the story. Troubled times occurred many times in the history of The Roman Empire. One such happened in 260AD when the Empire suffered an economic crisis (we know all about that kind of thing!). For years people had been clipping coins and VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

casting fakes from the collected fragments, including base metals to boost the weight. When money cannot be trusted, unrest breaks out and a regional commander in Gaul, Postumus, decided to split from the Empire and declare a separate “Gallic Empire”, which included Britain. He tried to bring some economic order to the currency but his “Empire” lasted for only fourteen years when Rome defeated the breakaways and the true Empire was restored. But the rot had set in... Just thirteen years later, a man who had risen through the military ranks of Rome, one Carausius, was made Commander of the Roman naval fleet based in the English Channel. His job was to eliminate piracy by Franks and Saxons who regularly preyed on shipping and raided the coasts of the North Sea and Channel. Carausius, the Emperor Maximium decided, had become a pirate himself and he ordered his execution. In 287AD Carausius learned of this and decided to declare himself Emperor of Britain and Northern Gaul. With the support of 4 legions (probably bought), he successfully survived an attempted invasion to oust him and he appealed to the British population with a vague promise of native autonomy. For seven years he ruled, issuing new currency with real value and attempting to placate Rome, but to little avail. The Empire recaptured all the Gaulish (France and Belgium) territory and he was left with only Britain. His ally and Finance Minister, one Allectus, delivered the final blow. In 293AD he assassinated Carausius and declared himself “Emperor” - so much for job security, death delivered by an accountant! Allectus, in turn,
Three Sisters: A section of a roadside ditch
was killed three years later when Rome re-conquered Britain, but not before he had issued currency bearing his own name.
SO WHERE IS THE “TREASURE”? This brings us back to the road to Wigan. In troubled times what do people do with their money? They hide it. All over Britain a hoarding and hiding took place. Thousands of “hoards” of coins and jewellery have been discovered by metal detectors in recent years and many of these have been in close proximity to Roman roads. Many such hoards were secreted in the time of Carausius and Allectus and locally we are no exception. In 1947, in the course of construction work, such a hoard was discovered in Boothstown. Some 550 bronze coins in a broken pot were unearthed and they were dated between 259AD to 278AD. These are now in the British Museum, with some in the Manchester Museum. In 1989 a much greater bonanza was found at Boothsbank Farm, just a mile from the first discovery. In a pit lined with straw 1,070 coins were deposited. Over the years since they were hidden, the silver that they were made from had fused them together into three large lumps which have yet to be separated. Only 14% remained loose and it is believed that the coins represent the reigns of eleven different emperors. This hoard now resides in Ordsall Hall. Who knows what still exists out there, near to our very own Roman road?
