Salford Choral Society: Sing for Salford Members of Salford Choral Society will be heading back to Hemsley House, The Crescent Salford, M5 4PE for rehearsals in September with the exciting prospect of singing the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc’s Gloria in Stoller Hall, Manchester’s new concert hall at Chetham’s School of Music, on 11th November. This will be followed on 16th December by Handel’s Messiah at the Royal Northern College of Music. Secretary Kathy McNaughton says, ‘Singing has significant benefits for your health, apart from being great fun and an excellent way of meeting people. So if you’ve been thinking of joining a choir, 6th September at 7.30pm would be good time to come along and meet us’. There’s another opportunity to come and join the choir and people from all over Manchester and beyond at Hemsley House on Saturday
7th October when Tom Newall, the choir’s Music Director, will lead a workshop covering the choruses from Verdi’s epic choral masterpiece Requiem. The choir will perform this work on 14th April 2018 at the RNCM. But we don’t just sing Requiems. We perform four concerts a year with professional orchestras and soloists with works from the 16th to the 21st century, and are regarded as one of the North West's leading choirs. Anyone interested in joining can contact: Carolyn Saltmarsh on 01942 795086, or email info@salfordchoral.org.uk. For further information on the choir and future events visit www.salfordchoral.org.uk.

WoW GUIDE (What’s on Where) SALFORD Caring and supporting older people in their own homes is the speciality of Home Instead Senior Care. ‘All our Client’s personalities are different and so too are their requests and requirements. Many Clients look forward to trips out, with the support of their CAREGivers, especially on fair weather days’, reports Michelle Corcoran. This has prompted Susan Robinson from Home Instead Senior Care to go out into the community to research activities open to the Seniors of Salford. Susan is in the final stages of preparing the Salford ‘WOW’ (What’s on Where) Guide. ‘I am astounded how many clubs, social groups, luncheon clubs, support groups and exercise classes there are in Salford. In addition Salford
really does support our community who are living with Dementia together with their Carers. Dementia friendly swimming, singing and dancing with dementia, memory boxes and sporting memories are all activities held in Salford on a regular basis. I am hoping this guide will be useful to many – people just need signposting.’ Susan and Jo are also offering dementia awareness sessions to any group, free of charge, in Salford. Emma, Jo, Michelle and Susan are always on hand to answer queries. If you would like to secure a free copy of the WoW guide, learn about the services Home Instead Senior Care offers, book a dementia awareness session or find out about job vacancies, contact us on 0161 870 3861 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/salford. St Ann’s Hospice:
Extending Our Community When thinking about a hospice, the first word that comes to mind may not be ‘community’ but that’s exactly what St Ann’s is. Each person involved in or touched by the hospice contributes to that community, whether that’s staff, volunteers, patients or donors. Outside the hospice, this community is still strong. Across Greater Manchester St Ann’s has 14 shops and a large network of people fundraising in many different ways. Some of the services St Ann’s provides are focussed on providing care away from the hospice buildings and in people’s homes in Salford, Trafford and North Manchester areas. More and more people are choosing to be cared for at home, and our specialist community teams can help patients achieve their wish.
Bridgford & Sons Funeral Services
Our caring staff are here to guide and advise you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Our services also include: - Pre-paid Funeral Plans - Memorial Masonry - Floral Tributes For further information contact us:
But what about those people in need of support who don’t have a place they can call home? St Ann’s has been working closely with Urban Village Medical Practice to develop a training programme for staff working at hostels and night shelters. Rachel McMillan, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Clinical Services at St Ann’s, says “We’re really pleased to be working with other organisations to reach out to people who may be more vulnerable or without a support network. We’re extending our community, developing our team and ultimately growing our St Ann’s family.” Please get in touch for more information or if you need our support: Local branch: Meadowsweet Lane (off Peel Lane), Little Hulton, M28 0FE Tel: 0161 702 8181 Email: enquiries@sah.org.uk

Summer Fitness
Run to Get Fit...
Essential Tips for Beginners Running is an ever-popular sport with a variety of targets you can set. The local area offers many opportunities for training and competing at your own pace.
Cardiac Fitness: Check your cardiac fitness before indulging in high volume/intensity training – if in doubt check with your GP. Start training with a mixture of exercise, not just by running – eg. walking, swimming, cycling etc... A Slow Build Up: Build up your training very gradually, ensuring your body can adapt to the increase in mileage and intensity. A recommended rule of thumb is not to increase mileage by more than 10% a week. Rest and recovery are also very important. Preventing Injuries: Work on your core strength and flexibility with stretching and Pilates exercises, this will help keep injuries at bay.
The Right Shoe: Good footwear is essential - seek out a local specialist running shop where staff can advise you on suitable shoes. Regular Sports Massage: Regular massages will help your recovery beween training sessions. Distance and Pace: If you are targeting a race, training should include shorter runs faster than race pace and longer runs at a slow pace. Worsley Physio can help you with Gait analysis and screening for potential weaknesses which could cause injuries. We prefer to offer preventative treatment before injuries occur. Food for Fitness
Why Nutrition is so Important! I think we have all heard the phrase “it’s 40% training and 60% nutrition” but I prefer “you can’t out train a bad diet”. I always like to say that it is 100% of both sides that’s needed to truly maximize your efforts. The correct nutrition can help fuel you for a better workout, increase your recovery rate and even help to improve your quality of sleep. Here are some essential tips to help you: n Have slow releasing carbohydrates before training to help provide constant energy throughout your run/gym training/classes etc. n Consume 20g-30g protein and between 10g-20g sugars post workout. This will help you recover from the training quicker and prevent any potential injuries. n Eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism sky high, burning calories and to keep blood sugar levels stable preventing insulin release. 18 LIVE IT LOCAL
n Drink plenty of water. When dehydrated your body starts storing body fat and struggles to improve muscle tone because after all, over 60% of your body is made up of water n Never skip breakfast! Your body needs to know that you are awake so that it can start working efficiently, as it has been fasting whilst you have been asleep and what better way than some protein pancakes. n Early nights. Try getting 6-8 hours of sleep a night to improve your recovery and so that you are ready for the day. ... for men may come, and men may go, but I go on forever Tennyson “The Brook” The Aviary: The hunting lodge of the Earl of Ellesmere
Worsley Brook Think not a few hundred years, nor even a few thousand, it could be as much as a million, perhaps even more. How long does a stream run for? If it is the Colorado River then you can count the years in many millions – enough to carve the Grand Canyon. The answer is, of course, as long as rain falls on a slope and collects to form a trickle, that builds into a steady flow. Unless there is a drastic change of climate, to create a desert, the stream will “live” and bring life to wherever it flows. So streams are ancient. They are older than anything except the rocks of the land they flow through and our local rivulet - Worsley Brook - is no exception.
An Ancient Stream This Brook predates the hamlets and towns through which it flows. It, and its fresh water, are probably the reason they stand where they are today. But, as streams go, it is never going to achieve anything in the rankings for length, width or depth. In length it is little more than six miles from its source in Walkden to its outlet into the Manchester Ship Canal (formerly the River Irwell). Quite where the Brook has its source is unknown to me. I have traced it to the higher ground of Walkden but modern development and culverting conceal the spot itself. I suspect a spring somewhere. However, once it tunnels under the East Lancs Road on its way south, it begins to assert itself. On what was (prior to the M60), a delightful glade full of wild garlic, 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
it is joined by Kempnough Brook, from Lumber Lane. This Brook has, in turn, travelled from the vicinity of Little Hulton. Now the Brook runs beneath the M60 before being released into the beauty of Worsley Woods on its ancient course. In the 19th century the Earl of Ellesmere decided on a spot of shooting and fishing on his doorstep and had a Lodge built, The Aviary. The Brook was dammed to create a lake that now provides one of the prettiest views in the area. The Brook was allowed to proceed via an overflow plunge into a tunnel. which drops the stream about 50ft lower, to again run through the Woods. However, this is only the beginning of its adventures for, after only a few hundred yards, it vanishes yet again, into a gaping tunnel...
Underground What Worsley Brook may lack in size, it more than makes up for in history. This little stream has contributed an immense legacy to posterity; starting in the 14th century and, most actively, in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was first harnessed to power a water mill, used for the grinding of grain into flour or meal. Any trace of this early mill are long since gone, but its past presence is preserved in the name of the picturesque Mill Brow road where VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local History
Old Warke Dam
Merging of Worsley and Kempnough Brooks
the back gardens look down upon the stream. It is said that the Brook was once considered as the answer to the Duke of Bridgewater’s problem of transporting his coal to Manchester. It was to be made into a canal, to the Irwell at Barton, and thence up that river to Manchester. In the event, this idea was abandoned in favour of the now famous Bridgewater Canal. It was the planned path of this canal - and an adjacent site intended to be among the world’s first industrial estates - that meant Worsley Brook had to go underground. Not just underground, but under canal! So, hidden from view behind Mill Brow, a tunnel was carved from the sandstone rock which, faced with brick, runs under what became the Duke’s industrial estate (what we now know as Worsley Green!), to go UNDER the canal for a total distance of around 400 yards from where it leaves the Woods. The only surface evidence of this passage of the Green is a sluice gate structure, fenced and hidden by bushes. The tunnel exits on Barton Road about 20 feet below road level and is easily viewed from the footpath. After a brief scrap of daylight the Brook again tunnels under the mound ruin and intact underground chambers of the former lime kilns on Barton Road, before finally

emerging to freedom. A recent expedition to explore these tunnels found them in need of some maintenance - not surprising after 250 years - but still largely sound. The maintenance has subsequently been done. Despite having been used as a disposal system by many uncaring businesses and individuals over past years, the Brook has proved remarkably resilient. Where once one could tell the day of the week by the colour of its waters (there was a dye works somewhere along its course, they used purple on Thursdays) it has run clear for decades. The Brook winds through Winton and islands of greenery, created by access roads to the M60 and there is much wildlife; through Peel Green, past the Salford Reds/ Sale Sharks stadium to finally join the Ship Canal. It has always had a population of Sticklebacks (“Jacksharps”) and occasional Dace, Roach and Chub in the lower reaches. Once, in the days of the Earls, it even had trout! This secretive little waterway and its wildlife (kingfishers in Winton, believe it or not) deserves our protection and respect. It has surely paid its dues.

Summer Plotting! Plotting on the Macmillan Plot
Around the City...
This is the UK growing season and we have the usual motley of weather. Still, all the beans are doing well and you should still be pinching-out the side-shoots on your tomatoes and feeding the fruits each week. Don’t forget to water, preferably in the morning, from the bottom and feed from the top; they have 2 root systems and you need to treat each differently. Try to keep water off the leaves as this will discourage blight.
Tindall Street - we have finally agreed, with United Utilities, who owns which trees. There are some huge Poplars, several Sycamores and a nasty invasion of Japanese Knotweed. All belong to UU and they have agreed to take action to remedy the problems they are causing both to the allotments and to the adjacent Archery Club.
We have given up trying outdoor tomatoes, the outside temperature changes are so fickle that it affects the flavour of the fruit and thickness of the skins. If you grow in a greenhouse, close the doors at night to help keep the temperature as steady as possible. If you’re going on holiday and have no-one to keep up your good work, why not rig up a drip-feeding system. If this is too much for you to do yourself, buy a cheap version and leave the worry of wilting behind. If you are using tap water, fill your can straight after watering and leave it to stand overnight, this will allow the water to warm up and help chlorine to evaporate. You can carry on succession sowing of carrots, peas, beetroot, radish and salad leaves but, it is best done in the early morning or last thing at night to avoid the heat of midday. Sow in drills and keep them well watered if there is a dry spell. Any runner beans or courgettes you have raised in the greenhouse, but haven’t yet planted, should go out now and don’t forget to water and take slug and snail protection seriously! New beekeepers have taken over the hives here and have secured funding to re-locate 8 hives inside a secure compound. The old site is being cleaned up and the new appears to be working well. Incredible Edible Salford/Education are progressing their improvements and the Macmillan plot was recently given funding to purchase a timber, raised bed from them and this is now a very attractive Strawberry bed. Addison Road - the committee is looking into bringing an adjacent area into use for allotments, the original site has been so successful that the extension appears to be a logical move for the future. Mossfield Allotments are making improvements to the site and are looking at what they need and how to achieve their aims. From the start, the committee has shown a willingness to ensure the site is a success and it looks like this will be a popular and successful place to grow and prosper. Beechfield - Salford University has now started research into the pollution here and the results should be known later this year. Hopefully, this will result in the site being released by the Council for re-establishment of the allotments. At the same time, staff from the University of Liege in Belgium have taken soil samples from the site to analyse and report back on toxicity and the possible remedies.
