SALFORD Saturday 7th July, 11am – 3pm

Festival of Ageing: Salford is a true celebration of ageing and living well with dementia. This wonderful family day will be packed full of boat races, climbing sessions, market stalls, talks, films, scrumptious food, fun and laughter. The day aims to positively challenge the stigmas associated with ageing and dementia; it’s a day aimed at bringing together older people, young people and those in the middle to try, buy, eat, watch and enjoy. The Salford Festival is part of a wider, week round programme of Festivals happening across Greater Manchester from 2 – 15 July 2018. Salford’s Festival will feature a boat race which is returning for its second year! ‘The boat race is about bringing together those affected by dementia to have fun and take part in something totally different where dementia isn’t the focus! Last year we had

Winners of “The Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” Award Asian Restaurant Awards 2018

Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 On Monday 5th March 2018, the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) hosted their first Asian Restaurant Awards. The winners of the inaugural Asian Restaurant Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony, held at the Manchester Hilton. The evening, attended by over 500 leading restaurateurs, chefs, food journalists and VIP guests, was hosted by BBC TV news anchor, Barbita Sharma.

The Naz, in Monton, scooped the presitgious title of “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant”. The Asian Restaurant Awards were organised by the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) which represents the nation’s 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success. Eccles Rotary Buzzes with Books

Help us Spread the Word Eccles Rotary has been a part of the community since 1932, serving the local people with projects such as working with the unemployed, promoting youth activities through music, away days and competitions and supporting the Eccles Gateway Club (MENCAP). We also run the Rotary Community Bookshop, a meeting point in the Shopping Centre. This project started in 2009 in response to the National Literacy Trust‘s campaign to create a literacy culture in England and to promote more reading, particularly in people who thought it was not for them. Eccles Rotary now operate a twice monthly “bookswap” from our shop as well as supplying book boxes to a number of retirement complexes in the area. In addition as a major part of the scheme we give free nearly new books to children and for the last four Christmases have distributed new, wrapped books to young people from our Santa’s Grotto.

In the press recently, an article reported that 40,000 children in Greater Manchester do not own a single book, so the club took action and organised a large scale event, “The Buzzing Book Bonanza”, in the Shopping Centre where 200+ books were freely given to children and they could listen to stories, meet local authors and “Hollyoaks” star Kieron Richardson, find out about the library and enjoy healthy food from “Strip Café” along with drinks from Eccles Coffee Bar. This was the local community working together. Now, following requests, we want to extend our book activities across Eccles/Monton and are looking for local people who have an interest in reading and a couple of hours a month to spare to help us. This is a perfect way to make a positive local impact, meet new like-minded people in an informal situation and organise events. Find out more and email us at info@ecclesrotary.org

Manchester City of Trees

Community News

Call for schools to help new trees take root across the region Environmental charity City of Trees is calling both primary and secondary schools to get in touch if they want pupils to help plant trees across Greater Manchester. Last year City of Trees, who has pledged to plant 3 million trees across Greater Manchester - one for every person, planted over 15,000 new trees with schools across the region – part of their ‘Trees for Learning’ initiative. The initiative is part of a national DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) backed programme of tree planting which will see 1 million trees planted with primary schools across the UK by 2020. City of Trees officially launched ‘Trees for Schools’ initiative in November 2017 with the help of Springwatch Unsprung presenter Lindsey Chapman and children and staff at St Charles RC Primary School in Swinton, Salford. Now the charity is calling for schools across Greater Manchester to get in touch to if they would like to get

involved – whether they have land for planting trees, or want pupils to experience helping to sow new saplings in a local greenspace. Beth Kelsall, City of Trees, explains; “Tree planting season takes place over winter, when the trees are dormant, so we’re calling on schools now to get in touch so we can get plans in place for the new term”. She adds; “Planting a tree enables pupils to connect with nature in a really simple way. Working with schools this year we have seen how much the kids enjoy getting muddy and making a different to their school grounds and local greenspaces.” City of Trees is also delivering outdoor and classroom education sessions, linking nature to the national curriculum. To get involved in the ‘Trees for Learning’ project, get in touch with Beth Kelsall; email beth@cityoftrees.org.uk or call 0161 872 1660.

Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

A BLOOMING PLOT! Plotting on the Macmillan Plot...

Around the City...

The Macmillan plot is bursting with new growth and the late Spring warmth has brought our crops up to speed following the earlier cold spell. We have been experimenting again and now have red celery and red sprouts growing well, in the hope that we can get children to try them.

At Tindall Street we have been blessed to have Don Booth, the chairman, advising us from the start of the Macmillan project. Don retired from this post earlier this year after many years and 50 years of allotmenteering, with a splendid turnout of friends and well wishers along with a very well attended barbecue. The new chairman is Dennis Johnson, another long standing member of the allotment fraternity and a keen grower.

The new beetroot beds are flourishing and an old tree container has made a great parsnip tub. Our red and green gooseberries were attacked by caterpillars but we sprayed them in time to save most of the fruit.

Beechfield allotments may soon be brought back into production following the Council granting planning consent for housing on the adjacent former Swinton Sewage Works. The scheme is in its early days but you can register interest now.

Our plum tree is bearing its first fruit. It blossomed beautifully but there aren’t very many plums - maybe next year we’ll do better.

Hilton Lane may soon be confirmed as the location for a new allotment site of 15 ‘half plots’ following talks between Salford Allotment Federation and Bellway, the prospective developer.

The Chantanay carrots are spectacular this year - no sign of carrot fly trouble and putting plenty of horticultural sand into the bed seems to have suited the crop. For the first time we tried planting rainbow chard this year and it seems to be doing well; it’s so colourful and we hope it carries on growing to full size. 18 LIVE IT LOCAL

Blackleach allotments are under active consideration for improvement and nearby housing development proposals may help to generate some funding for the scheme. SAF is actively pursuing this possibility with the developer and the Council. City Farm is still in discussion with the various agencies. A progress meeting is planned for July. Don will be actively involved and hopefully some decisions will be made at this meeting. If you are interested in a plot, please contact the SAF secretary carolyn.collins@me.com. Local History

Freemen of the City of Salford Many people remember that on 17th November 2017 the artist Harold Riley was made a Freeman of the City of Salford. He was the 25th recipient – who was the first? To be admitted as a Freeman is a tradition that has no real privileges but is regarded as a honour given to people who have lived or worked in the city of Salford and are valued members of the community. In its oldest sense a ‘Freeman’ referred to someone who had certain privileges in a city or borough such as the right to earn money and to own land. However with reforms to local government administration in the late 19th century, the award of ‘Freeman’ became an honour and more about civic pride. The first award was made to Benjamin Armitage, an industrialist, social reformer and MP, who was admitted on 18 January 1899. In October 1898, on the initiation of the then Mayor Alderman Sir Richard Mottram, the Council agreed to present the Freedom of the Borough to Mr Armitage and Mr Ben Wolfe Levy of London, and both gentlemen had accepted (Salford City Reporter, 24 December 1898). Mr Levy amongst other things had been responsible for developing the David Lewis Recreation Ground at the far end of Peel Park. The confirmation ceremony was held in the Council Chamber at Salford Town Hall, Bexley Square, when a special Council meeting was convened. Other recipients have included David Lloyd George, as a tribute to his leadership during the First World War, L.S. Lowry, Nelson Mandela and Ryan Giggs. Mrs Charis Frankenburg MA JP was the first woman to be admitted in November 1972 almost seventy-five years after the honour had been introduced. Forty years ago when supporting one of the candidates, Mayor J Hardman summed up the importance of the honour: ‘It is an occasion for happiness and 20 LIVE IT LOCAL

It enables the City Council to express in a formal manner its appreciation of the services given to the City over many years.’ The article above was written by Don Rainger and a more comprehensive description of the Freemen of Salford appears in the latest edition of Salford Link. Salford Link is Salford’s Local History Magazine and is produced twice a year. It has appeared for many years under the name LifeTimes Link, but with this issue has changed to Salford Link. It is a 28 page full colour A4 magazine costing just £3 and is available from city libraries, Salford Museum and Ordsall Hall. Recent issues have been produced by a team of volunteers and people are encouraged to take out a subscription, so for only £8 you can have two issues delivered to your door. For subscriptions visit www.salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk/culture We also welcome contributions which can be sent to salfordlink@outlook.com or The Editor, Salford Link, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, The Crescent, Salford M5 4WU. The deadline for the next issue is 12th October. Other articles in the current issue include: Worsley Clocks, 1918 Street, Joseph Brotherton, Pilkington Archives, Markendale Portraits and news from Salford Museum, Ordsall Hall and Local History Societies.

CARERS AND EX-CARERS SUPPORT GROUP

Are you caring for someone with dementia and living in Salford? If you answered YES then this is for you. We are a group of carers and ex-carers who meet once a month at the Humphrey Booth Resource Centre, Worsley Road, Swinton, M27 5WW. We are a very friendly welcoming group of people who meet to chat about the way we are coping with our caring roles. It is so easy to feel isolated, even if you have family and friends around you and it isn't always easy to open up and admit that you are worried about the future and if you are doing the correct things as a carer. Those feelings of frustration, anger, "why me" and guilt. We have all been there and our aim is to reach out and invite you to join us. We may not have all the answers but we can always find a man or woman who has.

VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

We have various guest speakers e.g. counsellors, occupational therapists, psychologists, health professionals, solicitors etc and we also enjoy the occasional craft sessions, demonstrations and trips out. We have lots of laughter and the occasional tears but we certainly enjoy ourselves. So what are you waiting for, we would love you to come and join us for a cuppa every fourth Wednesday of each month, 10.00am-12.00pm. Next meetings: 25th July, 22nd August, 26th September and 24th October. For more details contact Pat Foy: Tel: 0161 788 9806 or e-mail carersandexcarers@yahoo.com
