Growing your own is increasing in popularity - if you are keen on getting an allotment, contact the Salford Allotment Federation and put your name down for a plot. This issue, Geoff Hamilton, our resident “Plotter”, updates us on local sites and shares useful seasonal advice. The Wedding season is in full flow and we have dates of local shows you can attend if you are planning your wedding. Plus, local suppliers share their news and updates. Salford City College promoting females in STEM A-Level student, Hannah Daly is paving the way for females in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and has just completed her internship at Baynards, where she had experience in engineering, commission management, and building services. Hannah, who studies at Salford City College’s Pendleton Sixth Form Centre is on the Career Ready programme at Salford City College which complements her A-Levels in Business, Geography and Mathematics. The Career Ready model focuses on linking students to the real world of work, through guru lectures, mentoring, workplace visits and internships. As part of the course structure, students undertake a six week paid internship with a local employer, and are also allocated a business mentor. Hannah learnt CAD (computer aided design), 3D design (which she used for a real life engineering

project at a university), she visited different sites around the north west and worked with senior managers, contractors and site managers, she learned first aid, did health and safety training and worked with the marketing team to produce a business presentation. The former St Ambrose Barlow pupil said, “I had no previous interest in engineering so thought I would find it very daunting but it was nothing like I imagined and my role included a lot of design and project management which I picked up as I went along with help from my supportive mentors. I feel extremely lucky to have had has this opportunity. Every person who completes the programme walks away with a wealth of knowledge and valuable experience. Being a part of Career Ready programme at Salford City College has been one of the best decisions of my entire life.”

G-Festival 2017 G-Festival 17 is fast approaching following another hugely successful year for Georgia’s Children and another opportunity for the community of Worsley and Salford to get together and make a difference for disadvantaged kids both at home and around the world! Our free school uniform project continues to provide hundreds of free school uniforms to children referred to us by Salford City Council from Georgia’s House 5 at the Lifecentre in Salford. We are also now supporting local 5 year old Heidi Lou with her physiotherapy in her constant battle against cerebral palsy. Amongst other local projects, this winter we supported many families throughout Salford and Manchester along with Bakarah food aid and the Lifecentre by providing them with Christmas food hampers and presents.
Bridgford & Sons Funeral Services
Overseas we continue to support Love Light Romania with Georgia’s House 4 and winter food parcels for some of the poorest kids in Europe in a winter of -25 degrees. In Cambodia Georgia’s Houses 1,2 and 3 continue to provide Water, Healthcare, Education and Nutrition to children in one of the poorest countries in the world. Also underway is “Carole’s Classroom” in memory of Georgia’s mum and “Georgia’s School of Rock”. This year’s G-Festival takes a huge step forward as we gratefully welcome on board our corporate sponsors, the Morson Group. As always Georgia’s Children will deliver an amazing family day out and the biggest music festival in Salford. This year headlined by “The Total Stone Roses” and “Small Weller” with a special appearance from Mike Sweeney and the Salford Jets and more local talent.

Two princesses seek castle with tuna sandwiches Two little princesses who love to dress up are looking for the castle of their dreams – and it must include tuna sandwiches. Salford City Council is trying to find long-term foster carers for the two sisters *Alice, 8, and *Mollie, 6. Both love Disney films, playing outside, climbing, swimming, dogs and tuna sandwiches. Councillor Lisa Stone, lead member for children’s and young people’s services, said: “These two little girls need strong emotional support and attention and we’d like them to continue at their school where they are doing well. We also need 40 new foster carers every year for all the children and young people who need it. That can be weekend respite care,
short term or long-term, taking a child up to 18 and beyond. We’re not worried about people’s relationships, whether they rent or own their home or even whether they have experience of raising children. If you’re the right person and you have space in your home and heart and the time and energy to devote to a child we can supply training, emotional and financial support.” If you can help these princesses, or any other child in need of foster care, please contact Salford City Council’s fostering team on family.recruitment@salford.gov.uk or call 0161 799 1268 * Names have been changed

Buile Hill Junior parkrun is a series of 2k runs for children aged between 4 and 14. They are held in areas of open space around the UK. They are open to all, free, and are safe and easy to take part in! We started the Salford junior parkrun in the latter stages of 2016. Since then we have had 24 runs with our biggest turnout of 59 Salford children keeping active running, and some even walking the course. All boys and girls are welcome at any level, even if they have never run before.
it is recommended that 5-18 year olds do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, ranging from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous, such as running and tennis. Exercise has so many physical and mental health benefits and helps to promote more positive attitudes and behaviour. Salford junior parkrun is a FREE event organised by our dedicated volunteers for the benefit of everyone. Many thanks to all of them - we are always looking for new volunteers!
We have marshals all around the course to keep an eye on the boys and girls and high five them as they go round. It's a great run and we want to see lots more kids come down and having FUN!
Join us on Sundays, 9.00am at Buile Hill Park, Salford. The run starts by the Eccles Old Rd/ Manor Road entrance.
Exercise is one of the most important aspects of a child’s life. To maintain a basic level of health,

Lasting Powers of Attorney can be more important than a Will While many people are aware that they should keep their Will up to date, few consider how their personal business and medical affairs would be managed if they become unable to do so themselves. Depending on people’s circumstances a Lasting Power of Attorney can be more important than a Will.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) enables you to give legal authority to a person or a number of people to act on your behalf in handling your property and financial affairs and/or your health and welfare decisions if you lose the mental capacity to do so.
If you do lose your mental capacity, your financial assets will be frozen and your family will be unable to continue to deal with these without making a costly and time consuming application to the Court of Protection. They will also be unable to make decisions about your health and welfare. This is why it is so important to have Lasting Powers of Attorneys in place.

Join the Manchester Midnight Walk 2017 St Ann’s Hospice’s flagship fundraising event, the Manchester Midnight Walk, is back for 2017. This year’s walk will take place on Friday 23 June 2017 and interested walkers can sign up now on the website – www.mmwalk.org.uk, or by calling 0161 498 3631. A special early bird rate is available for keen walkers who book their place early. The 2017 event comes after around 2,000 participants paraded through the streets of the city last year, raising just under £170,000 for one of the oldest adult hospices in the country. The event has continued to pull in the crowds every year since it began in 2007, creating a unique late-night party atmosphere. Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “Last year’s walk was incredible with
thousands of people joining in to raise an amazing amount for the hospice. We’re really excited for this year’s event, and can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned for the evening!” Many walkers take part in memory of lost loved ones, whilst others join in simply for a night of fun and fundraising. *To register please call the hospice on 0161 498 3631 or visit www.mmwalk.org.uk *Early Bird fee of £15 is available until 31 March 2017. Following that date, the Standard Adult Fee of £20 applies for those aged 18 and over. The Youth Fee for walkers aged 11-17 years (walkers must be aged 11 or over) is £10, with Previous Walkers at £15, and Groups (5 people or more) fee of £15 per person.

Monton Unitarian Church Plans Major Refurbishment Monton Unitarian Church, or the Church on the Green, as it is known by locals, is beginning the process of seeking funding for essential repairs. Built in 1875, the church was designed by renowned architect Thomas Worthington, and features a host of incredible stained glass windows picturing people not just from the Bible, but also notable figures such as Plato and Socrates, the Emperor Trajan, William Shakespeare and Dante. It is also home to two magnificent picture windows. But the windows are beginning to deteriorate with age, and now some of them are in urgent need of repair. Rev Anna is leading a working group to put together a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to have the windows renovated and repaired, and in doing so, they will also be researching the origins, design, creator and benefactor, of each of the windows, in order to produce a comprehensive guidebook and webpage to celebrate them. Anyone who is interested in getting involved in this research and repair work is warmly invited to contact Rev Anna. But the stained glass windows are simply the first step in a long process. After the windows, comes the heating. Rev Anna explains, “anyone who has been in our church between October and March 24 LIVE IT LOCAL
of each year knows that it can often be colder inside than it is outside, and our current heating system, which is now 40 years old, is completely inadequate and inefficient. This January, as often happens at this time of year, we had to hold Sunday services in the adjacent Memorial Hall, as the temperatures were just too cold to endure. But we want to make this church warm and welcoming not just in summer, but all year round, and not just on Sundays once the heating has been running for several hours, but throughout the week.” These schemes will take some while to achieve, firstly with obtaining the funding required and then actually carrying out the work. But Rev Anna has a long term goal in mind. “In 2025 Monton Church in its current building will celebrate its 150th anniversary – before that, we want the church to be warm, dry, properly lit and comfortable, so that it can truly be the church at the heart of Monton community, and offer so much more than just worship on Sundays. We are already an incredibly popular church for child welcomings and weddings, and also hold the first church same-sex wedding licence in Salford. “We are establishing Monton Film Club, hoping to put on displays of art work celebrating the stained glass windows, and also plan to hold more concerts of the sort we celebrated last July, with Sweet Rhythm Big Band. We’d like to offer services such as Mindfulness@Lunchtime, meditation groups and discussion groups, all within its incredible atmosphere – but the church needs to be brought up to modern standards for that to work. It will be a long journey, but with everyone’s help and support, we know we can do it.” Details about the church can be found on its Website: www.ukunitarians.org.uk/monton, or Contact Rev Anna on 07769 038 773 or Email: revannajarvis2014@gmail.com montonunitarians

Care Training Places Released to Meet Demand Local homecare provider, Home Instead Senior Care, have released 70 FREE training places for caregivers as demand for care services spirals in the local area. A perfect storm of an ageing population combined with increasing levels of loneliness and pressure on social care budgets has led to a surge in demand for care services which will enable local elderly people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Speaking about the need to train more staff, Susan Robinson of Home Instead in Salford said, “The impact of a national shortage of carers is being felt locally and creating problems for the elderly in particular. In 2017 it’s time to care.”
“The service we provide is focused on providing much-needed company and social stimulation to elderly people as well, of course, as more traditional care services. You don’t need to have experience but the right attitude and a caring and empathetic nature. We match clients and caregivers based on shared interests. Following initial induction training, our caregivers receive additional training based on the individual needs of the clients they are matched to.” On completion of the initial training, caregivers receive the nationally recognised Care Certificate and can go on to further develop their skills with additional qualifications should they wish. Anyone interested in applying for one of Home Instead training places should contact 0161 870 3861 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/Salford.

PLOTTING THIS SPRING The Plotters Update...
Around the City...
Now that the nights are getting lighter, I hope you are ready to get your seeds and plantings on the way.
The Mossfield (Swinton) allotments are now let and the tenants are getting stuck into digging, feeding etc. hoping for some sun on their backs and not too much rain. Some of the site has flooding problems and the Council and Salford Allotment Federation (SAF) are looking into what remedies are needed. We would be pleased to hear from anyone with spare topsoil (about 20 tonnes) should do the trick. If anyone can help, please get in touch with the SAF secretary at carolyn.collins@me.com.
At the Macmillan plot, our rhubarb is showing and we are going to spread chicken pellets any day. This was a newly planted plot last year, so we are hoping for a bumper crop, lots of crumble, pie and anything else that rhubarb is good for! Our potatoes will be 'chitting' soon and you should be 'chitting' yours too, unless you are sowing them direct. Your shallots, onions and beetroot will need to be planted soon but it's a bit too cold just yet. When you do, don't forget to pinch off the tufts at the top of your onions and shallots or the birds will lift them as quickly as you plant them. String a few old CDs over your plot and the birds might just give you a miss. If you are taking any soft cuttings but don’t have any rooting compound handy, try dipping your cutting in vinegar instead, lots of folk swear by this method of rooting. Don't forget to get your chillies, peppers and tomatoes started, this is the time to get them going. Make sure your pots are clean; if they are being reused, new compost is preferable to re-using last years spent compost. You don’t want to risk infecting your new plants and depleting them of the 'feed-value'. Used soil may be deficient in the minerals that plants need. You may want to mulch some of your open land to keep down weeds. If so, try laying pages from an old newspaper on the ground before applying your mulch, the paper will rot and old paper is cheaper than fabric, easier to tear around plants too. 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
At Harrop Fold (Walkden) the site operators, Mitie, are close to reaching an agreement with Don Booth, chairman of the Salford Allotment Federation, for 6 raised beds to be managed by the SAF. Don is planning to have a shed for each plot and this is a very pleasant spot which Don, Mitie and your Councillors have collaborated on to provide an excellent facility. If you or someone you know would like a plot, just off Hilton Lane, Walkden then please contact the SAF secretary. Newhall Avenue (Peel Green) land clearance is progressing well and SAF is now looking for funding to fence the plots so they can be let. Beechfield Allotments (Swinton) are still under review but Don is hoping to get the go-ahead for the site to be refurbished and let later this year. There is just a possibility that there may be some additional plots, in years to come, if the old Swinton Wastewater Treatement Works is cleared for development too. Blackleach (Walkden) allotments are hopefully in line for the long-awaited extension and improvement. The SAF is awaiting details of the programme and looking forward to work starting. If you are interested in a plot at any of the forthcoming sites above, or have topsoil to spare, please contact the SAF secretary at carolyn.collins@me.com. Arial views of RHS Bridgewater Tom Stuart-Smith
RHS Gardens Bridgewater: Masterplans Released In April 2016 The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) revealed the masterplan for the new RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford. World-class landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, was appointed to create the plan which will bring back to life the lost historic grounds at Worsley New Hall. Key elements of the aspirational horticultural masterplan include: An entrance garden laid out like a web and planted as a perennial meadow A new lake which anchors the new visitor building within the landscape A water garden of interlocking streams and rocky waterfalls The reconstruction of the historic walled garden, to include a therapeutic garden, vegetable garden and flower garden A new Learning Centre
Proposals for the entrance garden Tom Stuart-Smith
In January 2017, following extensive consultation with the community and partners including planning consultants, educational bodies, charities and community organisations and landscape architects, the proposed plans for RHS Garden Bridgewater, the RHS’s fifth garden, were submitted for planning permission to Salford City Council. The proposals include designs for a new Welcome Building at the 154-acre site, provided by architects Hodder+Partners. They were invited to design a world class visitor centre which will provide a gateway to the gardens, as well as designs for the reuse of existing buildings for catering and retail purposes. Other material featured in the planning submission includes garden designs by landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, who produced the master plan for the site. Here are just a few of the artists’ impressions submitted with the plans.

RHS Garden Bridgewater is planned to open in phases from 2019 starting with The Walled Garden as part of the RHS wider 10-year £160 million investment programme to achieve its Vision to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place. 28 LIVE IT LOCAL
