Welcome It’s been a busy few months working on some exciting developments, starting with our new On Our Doorstep & Live it Local logo and a new style front cover. We hope you like them! We are redesigning our website too, which will be launching in the coming weeks, so “watch this space” as they say! Our first magazine was published over seven years ago in 2010. Since then we have steadily developed the content, expanded our circulation and added new services to our business. Did you know we offer leaflet distribution with our magazines, social media marketing packages, and design & printing services? Supporting the community continues to be a priority for us. As well as promoting local groups, charities and events in our magazines, we are sponsoring events such as the Monton Village Festival in July, and taking part in some St Ann’s Hospice charity events. We always welcome feedback, or if have ideas for future features, please get in touch!

RHS Gardens Bridgewater:
Another Step Closer... In January 2017, The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) submitted the proposed plans for the RHS’s fifth garden “Bridgewater” to Salford City Council. The gardens will bring back to life the lost historic grounds at Worsley New Hall. Last month (April 2017) the plans were approved. A spokesperson for the Royal Horticultural Society, RHS said: “We are delighted that Salford City Council has today granted planning permission in principle for RHS Garden Bridgewater. This means that this exciting and inspirational project, which will provide huge benefit to the local area, has passed another key stage.

Walled Garden Plans: Tom Stuart-Smith
The proposals include designs for a new Welcome Building at the 154-acre site, from architects Hodder+Partners, who were invited to design a world-class visitor centre which will provide a gateway to the gardens, as well as designs for the reuse of existing buildings for catering, garden centre and retail purposes. Other material featured in the planning submission includes garden designs by landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, who produced the masterplan for the site. The application will now be referred to the Secretary of State due to the green belt status of the site. There are still many stages involved in creating this world-class garden but we look forward to updating everyone as our plans progress.”

Join the Manchester Midnight Walk 2017 St Ann’s Hospice’s flagship fundraising event, the Manchester Midnight Walk, is back for 2017. This year’s walk will take place on Friday 23 June 2017 and interested walkers can sign up now on the website – www.mmwalk.org.uk, or by calling 0161 498 3631. The 2017 event comes after around 2,000 participants paraded through the streets of the city last year, raising just under £170,000 for one of the oldest adult hospices in the country. The event has continued to pull in the crowds every year since it began in 2007, creating a unique late-night party atmosphere. Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said:
“Last year’s walk was incredible with thousands of people joining in to raise an amazing amount for the hospice. We’re really excited for this year’s event, and can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned for the evening!” Many walkers take part in memory of lost loved ones, whilst others join in simply for a night of fun and fundraising. *To register please call the hospice on 0161 498 3631 or visit www.mmwalk.org.uk *The Standard Adult Fee of £20 applies for those aged 18 and over. The Youth Fee for walkers aged 11-17 years (walkers must be aged 11 or over) is £10, with Previous Walkers at £15, and Groups (5 people or more) fee of £15 per person.

Salford Royal Hospital Foundation Trust: The Salford Bowel Cancer Support Group Our support group was formed in 2010 by the hospitals’ colorectal nursing team so anyone affected by bowel cancer (patient, family, friend or supporter) could find someone they could talk to about the condition, its’ consequences, where to look to for help, advice or just plain talk about feelings etc. The group is backed up by the Macmillan Cancer Support staff based in the hospital who also offer an ear, advice or a shoulder when needed. Both teams offer support before and after surgery so a diagnosis, surgical procedure or postoperative issues can be discussed at any time. We meet every other month, in the hospital, for a ‘talking-shop’ where anything can be brought up, not just medical matters. Plus, there is a programme of visits and events for the non-
meeting months. Where possible nursing and Macmillan staff attend both the meetings and social events, subject to their heavy workload! If you or someone close to you would like to attend, our next 2017 meetings are: June 15th • August 17th • October 17th 6pm, Mayo Building, Salford Royal Hospital. New members are welcome to join the visits and activities in the months in between. DELICIOUS LOCAL BRUNCHES Not quite breakfast. Not quite lunch. The late morning to mid-afternoon tradition of brunch has existed in some form since the late nineteenth century. Originating in England in the 1890s, this culinary contender to breakfast reached a peak in popularity in 1930s as it spread to the United States. British writer Guy Beringer first used the word “brunch” in 1895 in an essay in Hunters Weekly called “Brunch: A Plea.” Beringer suggested brunch could be a sociable alternative to the quick breakfasts and heavy, post church meals of the day, as well as a better time for those with hangovers to eat! Who can argue with that? Over the past decade, the Brits have fallen back in love with brunch and more establishments are offering breakfasts and brunches to meet demand. Find here a selection of local eateries serving some of the best brunches in our community.

Those magnificent men in their flying machines... They are up there every day and often we don’t even bother to look up to investigate. The reason is because we have grown up with them, they have been in our local sky for almost a hundred years and are no novelty – as they would be in many other parts of the Country. “They” are the ever-present light aircraft emanating from what we locals know as “Barton Aerodrome”. It has had a few other names, since it was constructed in 1928, completing in 1930, as the United Kingdom’s very first purpose-built municipal airport. It was Manchester Airport and was duly called exactly that! The runways were, and still are, grass. A large Hangar was built for the protection of aircraft and, in 1933, a handsome Control Tower equipped with wireless communication with aircraft (both of which are still operational and Grade 2 Protected as relics of aviation history). An adjacent farmhouse became a Terminal and sheltered accommodation for passengers awaiting flights.
Services Begin The new Airport, financed by the municipal authority of Manchester, went into the business of providing air transport in the summer of 1930. Imperial Airways (in later life to become BOAC and then British Airways!) operated a thrice-weekly service to Croydon via Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. The flights originated in Croydon, stayed overnight at Barton, then flew back the following morning to connect with flights to Europe. Other airlines were quick to use the Barton facility, with a Croydon-based airline, Railway (?!) Air Services flying via Barton to Belfast and 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
Glasgow. By 1935 there were services linking Barton to Liverpool, Blackpool and the Isle of Man were in operation. But Barton’s days of glory in providing large scale passenger services were drawing to a close. The boggy nature of the airfield (it is part of the Chat Moss complex) meant that larger heavier aircraft could not use the runways. In fact the heaviest aircraft ever to do so were the DC3 Dakotas of Aer Lingus in the 1940’s. Accordingly, in 1938, all scheduled passenger services were transferred to the new airport for Manchester - “Ringway”, which from 1940 to 1957 also became an RAF base.
New Roles for Barton With World War II, Barton was requisitioned by the Government for the repair of military aircraft, which was carried out by civilian companies from the then giant industrial complex of neighbouring Trafford Park. These aircraft were a wide variety, from fighters to bombers, and included Hurricanes, Fairey Battles, Avro Ansons and Corsairs, all of which could then be conveniently flown back to their bases. Then Fairey Swordfish, the slow torpedo bomber type that had attempted to cripple the “Bismarck” German battleship, were scrapped at Barton and over 700 Percival training aircraft were built by Hills & Sons of Trafford Park and test flown at the airfield, which was kept very busy throughout Fairey Swordfish the war. Local History
de Havilland Tiger Moth Aircraf at Manchester Airshow 2015 Control Tower built in 1933
A sole passenger service continued the airport’s original purpose, and this was the Aer Lingus flight by DC3, from Dublin to Barton, between 1940 - 1942. Perhaps because a ship crossing might have been more vulnerable to German attack or time was considered important, this service continued without any incident. Come the end of the War and yet another new life for Barton dawned.
Training and Recreation In 1946 the Lancashire Aero Club moved their base to Barton, starting an association that was to last until 2007. At the same time the Manchester University Air Squadron and the RAF No.2 Reserve Flying School also moved in and remained until 1953, ensuring that the skies would always be full of their activities. All these groups engaged on training in Tiger Moths and Chipmunk aircraft, the School training future RAF personnel. The Aero Club now operate from another site but individual enthusiasts still use Barton with their own aircraft which include microlights and there is also considerable business charter traffic due to the convenience of the airfield’s proximity to Manchester.
“Aviation Family Fun Day and Aircraft Fly-In Event” which now forms the “Manchester Airshow”.
Emergency Services For quite some years Barton has been the base for helicopters providing a number of vital services. The Greater Manchester Police Air Support Unit operate helicopters from the airfield 24 hours a day throughout the year. The North West Air Ambulance Service, a registered charity, base helicopters at Barton to provide emergency medical aid to much of the north west.
City Heliport In 2011 the “City Heliport” opened to provide a purpose built facility for a growing commercial demand. Offices, a Conference Room and a dedicated Passenger Lounge plus re-fuelling facilities, complemented by the existing airport make the Heliport very popular. Unlike the fixed-wing aircraft facility it operates at night for the emergency services with portable lighting – and by arrangement for civil helicopters. Written by John Kirwin
Once called “Manchester Airport” Barton no longer flirts with alternatives, for its official name, according to the Civil Aviation Authority, is Manchester/Barton. In its earlier years Barton mounted air shows and flying displays when flying was still a novelty and these have been revived with the LIVE IT LOCAL 27

Spring Gardening
CARRY ON PLOTTING! Plotting on the Macmillan Plot
Around the City...
Now that things are warming up and buds are everywhere, we have planted our various types of potatoes, onions, shallots and Nasturtiums, mulched the strawberries and fruit trees and weeded the last Sycamore seedlings out (we hope!). If you haven’t got this far yet, don’t worry, what goes in later will just finish a bit later, but don’t delay much longer or you’ll be watering till backache if the sun decides to shine.
Don Booth, Chairman of the Salford Allotment Federation has negotiated a policy with the City Council whereby 5,000m2 of land will be provided for new allotments for every 1,000 residences that are given planning consent. The SAF will monitor the number of approvals given and we expect to have more allotments in the future!
Our Perpetual Spinach turned into a woody shrub so it came out and we planted new seeds which have sprouted and are looking more like the leaves we want. It’s a brilliant plant which keeps on leafing-up - we use it in all sorts of recipes. We salvaged some seedlings from last year’s failed beetroot crop and created raised beds from some old plastic bins, sawn into 3. They are small, but ideal for the job and are now our beetroot beds for successional planting. Our Rhubarb has, as we hoped, performed very well - plenty of rain and some chicken manure has done us proud and we have plenty more to harvest yet. If you are still setting seeds, don’t forget to use tap water for watering until the seedlings are established to prevent any genetic problems from ‘butt’ water contamination.
Don is in discussion with the Universities of Salford and Liege (Belgium) regarding soil contamination across Europe and is hoping to make progress with the Health Farm initiative as part of this project. There is talk of Network Rail handing some of their land at smaller stations to local Councils for management, so that better use can be made of those sites. We hope that this may result in more allotment spaces across the City! The City Mayor, Paul Dennett visited Tindall Street allotments and has asked Don to arrange more time for a longer visit, hopefully on a sunny day! In the early 1960’s an area of land in Irlam, next to the Poorlots allotments, was mistakenly registered as ‘Common Land’. This has now been rectified and it’s planned to re-offer it ‘to let’ as allotments. Anyone interested in a plot should apply to the chairman of Poorlots at cavanagh41@sky.com. All sorts of improvements are going ahead at Cleavley’s allotments and if you are interested in knowing more or applying for a plot here, email pat.walkington@ntlworld.com.
If you fancy a change from lettuce on your salad, why not try Polyanthus leaves. They’re edible and free and don’t forget the Nasturtium flowers to add colour.
Beechfield allotments are still under discussion with the Council and a contamination survey will, hopefully, be carried out this summer and this should result in the site being released for allotments, ready for next Spring.
Keep an eye out for the slugs and snails - they can suddenly appear and be devastating. If you worry about using pellets, beer traps are probably the best alternative but check them regularly and keep them topped-up!
If you are interested in taking an allotment, anywhere across the City, apply to the SAF secretary at carolyn.collins@me.com.
