Charities at Christmas

Christmas Food appeal Salford Central Foodbank is hoping to make the festive period better for those at Christmas who may be struggling to put food on the table. Whilst they will continue to issue standard food parcels to individuals and families who are in crisis, they would like to give an additional bag of Christmas treats and are inviting local people to get involved by donating these items which will include mince pies, Christmas puddings, chocolates, crisps and tinned ham. Last year the foodbank gave out 3,285 three day emergency food parcels of which 1,395 were for children. People attending either of the two foodbank centres in Salford are identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers, and given a voucher to exchange for their food.

Salford Central Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: “Christmas is always a busy period where we help more people than any other time of the year. For many over this period, there isn’t much to look forward to. Not being able to buy presents for friends and family is tough enough, let alone being hungry. We want to do our bit to help families and individuals enjoy Christmas a bit more than they might do otherwise. We rely on generous, local people for our food and would love many to help make a difference to others in their community.” Donations can be left at permanent collection points at Sainsbury’s, Regent Road or Tesco, Salford Precinct. Or, they can be taken to Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call 0161 637 4500 to confirm when you will be donating.

SUPPORT STRUGGLING FAMILIES AT CHRISTMAS Christmas should be about more than survival. Yet for one in three local children whose families struggle to make ends meet, it is just that. We want to ensure all Salford children have toys and treats to enjoy on Christmas Day by helping struggling families with the expense of the season.

In 2015 we gave toys and food to the families of over 1,000 Salford children and this year we expect the numbers needing help to grow.

BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL

A School for Families Bridgewater is a school for families. We are a co-educational school for children aged between 3 and 18 years and our education is inclusive, challenging, academically stimulating and pastorally supportive. We truly believe in a holistic approach to education and offer an extensive range of opportunities in academic work and in the form of extra-curricular experiences beyond the classroom. Our school ethos aims to produce individuals who are wellrounded and able to meet the challenges of life in the 21st century and we feel that personal development is greatly enhanced by the challenge of a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme across all sections of the school. We work harmoniously across our full age range supporting your child in their first steps into our outstanding Early Years’ section and throughout their learning journey up to university entrance after their studies in the 6th Form. Our community

provides recognition of the individual needs of each child and student whilst still ensuring that the collective needs of teams, choirs, productions, and all the other facets of a vibrant school community, are also well promoted. We want our pupils to celebrate and take pride in personal, individual and group achievement. We are a reflective school striving for continuous improvement in and out of the classroom and in the facilities that we offer. We encourage our pupils to be equally reflective, mutually respective, considerate, thoughtful and ambitious. We expect the highest academic standards and provide a stimulating learning experience for all our children and students. MISSION CHRISTMAS 2016 Sadly, the statistics are still standing 1 in 3 children are living in poverty in Greater Manchester. Enjoy Your Pregnancy with some Gentle Exercise and Relaxation It’s a myth that when you’re pregnant you can’t take some time to exercise and stay healthy. And with swimming named one of the safest ways to exercise for mummies-to-be, aquanatal classes are probably one of the best courses to sign up for. “Puddle Ducks aquanatal sessions are the perfect balance of relaxation, laughter and exercise a wonderful way to unwind and stay healthy in pregnancy,” says Puddle Ducks franchise owner Jo Gribben. “Our expertly designed aquanatal programme takes a holistic approach to mums’ physical and mental well-being, combining relaxation with cardiovascular exercises to help prepare the body for birth.” And that’s not all, swimming in pregnancy has been found to improve muscle tone, circulation and strength, whilst also easing pregnancy niggles such as back pain and swelling in the hands and feet. Classes take place in soothing, warm pools and combine exercise with relaxation activities so it’s not all hard work. “The lessons are designed this way to help your body to release natural happy hormones, endorphins, which suppress pain and help you to feel calm,” explains Jo. “This is not only helpful during 10 LIVE IT LOCAL

pregnancy but learning relaxation techniques is a great skill to have during and after labour.” When baby arrives, mummy friends are very important. Going to a class while you’re pregnant means that you could make good friends that are a great support when you’re a new mummy. You’re also in safe hands with Puddle Ducks aquanatal as all of their teachers have been through rigorous training. A Puddle Ducks teacher has to pass antenatal swimming training which is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives Trust, STA Aquacise training and their own extensive Aquanatal training. Suitable from 14 weeks gestation, aquanatal classes combine gentle cardio vascular exercises, relaxation and fun. There are plenty of sessions to choose from that are flexible around working hours so you can fit them in before maternity leave starts. Sessions last 45 minutes, are priced at £4.95 and are booked in blocks of six. Classes run at the following times:

Mondays 7.15pm: DW Fitness Bolton Wednesdays 6.45pm: Radcliffe Leisure Centre Thursdays 7.15pm: Worsley Leisure Centre To book your place, call 01257 262622 or e-mail eastlancs@puddleducks.com “Our aqua Mums will also receive 20% off their booking in our Floaties classes too so you can continue your Puddle Ducks journey after the baby arrives,” added Jo. HEADSTRONG: Macmillan Cancer Support ways to tie scarves and wear hats and they also receive a complementary goodie bag.” For patients undergoing cancer treatment, hair loss can have a devastating effect on their selfconfidence and body image. The Headstrong service, run by Macmillan at Salford Royal, provides practical tips and advice for clients on how to tie scarves and use hats to reduce the impact this can have. Launched in 2012, volunteers at the free service also provide emotional support for those struggling with the effects cancer treatment can have on them both physically and mentally. Joanne Shaw, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Assistant, said: “Losing your hair can be very distressing for someone who may already be going through quite a difficult time in their life.” “At the Headstrong appointment, clients can learn how to prepare for hair loss, be shown interesting

Mrs Sylvia Thomasson, from Bolton, has used the service and felt much more confident after meeting with the volunteers. She said: “I was worried about losing my hair due to my treatment but the Headstrong volunteers made me feel very reassured and supported; I can’t thank them enough.” Mrs Margaret Davies, from South Manchester, said: “The session was most informative and gave me lots of ideas for the use of headscarves and hats to keep my head warm as my hair is thinning.” The service is run by trained volunteers and takes place every other Tuesday between 11am-2pm at the Christie at Salford Royal. To find out more, or to book an appointment, please contact the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre on 0161 206 1455 or 0161 918 7804.

Michelle Corcoran, our Registered Care Manager has recently visited many of our clients to check on how they are feeling and to make sure that they are happy with our services. Beat the Winter Blues... Worsley Laser Clinic suggest 3 treatments to help you combat the problems that cold, harsh weather bring to your skin and to get you ready for Christmas!

Your Face...

Your Fingers and toes...

The best thing about winter? Wrapping up under a blanket and relaxing with a Dermalogica facial!! The weather can do terrible things to our skin. We also have alternative facials for acne, dryness, dehydration, oily skin and teens. Treatment is £35 for one hour

There's nothing better than posh fingers and toes when it comes to making you feel fabulous at your Christmas party. We now have the gorgeous new colour collection from Creative Play (the makers of Shellac) to brighten up those winter days (& nights!). File & Polish just £10

Your Figure... Another favourite winter treatment is, of course, the ever popular Laser Lipo! An effective inch loss treatment to help you drop a dress size for Christmas and look fabulous in that LBD! Also suitable for men who want to go down a belt notch. The Blitz: Part 2

Manchester in Flames Tucked away behind the concrete monstrosity that is wryly known by locals as “The Berlin Wall” in Piccadilly’s shabby Gardens in Manchester, is an enigmatic, but beautiful, metal sculpture. Flanked by the Wall on one side and by rapidly growing trees, into which it merges, this memorial is “The Tree of Remembrance”.

Passed by thousands daily, most of whom are oblivious to its existence or significance, it commemorates the civilian deaths caused by bombing in the Manchester Blitz during World War 2. Commissioned in 2005 some 60 years after those events, it was created by Fiona Heron and Wolfgang Buttress (the latter famous for many sculptures, most recently for the “Swarm of Bees” in Kew Gardens). The sculpture in Piccadilly, as its name suggests, takes the form of a beautiful Scots Pine tree, crafted in steel and bronze and the trunk carries the names of the “Christmas Blitz” victims.

Manchester Under Attack The “Blitz”, short for the German blitzkrieg (total war), was the intensive bombing of Britain’s cities by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). In Greater Manchester it occurred frequently, from August 1940 until the middle of 1944. The major attack, which resulted in half the total deaths of the entire War, were the two raids of December 22nd-24th 1940, which caused widespread devastation, with almost 800 victims and thousands injured. A further significant attack in 26 LIVE IT LOCAL

1941 again caused major damage and deaths. A total of 1,428 men, women and children died in Greater Manchester during the course of the War, many more thousands suffered injury and some 50,000 homes were destroyed. Other cities such as London, Liverpool and Coventry suffered far more raids and casualties and it is astonishing that Manchester, despite so many homes being targeted, escaped comparatively lightly in terms of casualties. But there were many individual tragedies hidden behind the bald statistics. In many cases entire families were wiped out. Such was the timing of the Christmas Blitz that celebrations often involved three generations of a family, relations and friends. There were also office and works parties that brought people together, gatherings of Air Raid Wardens, Police and medical personnel. Also, there may have been a more relaxed attitude... after all who would plan such an attack at Christmas? But Reichsmarshall Goering had a penchant for such timing throughout the War and he duly despatched, over the two nights, a total of 441 bombers, which dropped 443 tons of high explosives and 1,930 incendiary fire bombs. The strategic targets, the Salford Docks and Trafford Park industry, escaped major damage. Instead, it was the residential areas which were close to them and the city centre itself, which were devastated. A Christmas party in Miles Platting, which included three generations of the same family, sustained a direct hit by a bomb, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 family members men, women and children. The ARP and Medical HQ at Gilda Brook Road in Eccles was similarly destroyed, again in the course of a party, and 11 Wardens and First Aid personnel died. VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local History

– before the War it had many more... The policy of the Nazi war effort was twofold: Having failed to invade our islands, the first aim was to destroy the capability to fight by eliminating our industrial capacity and starving us into submission. The second was to terrorise the population into accepting defeat, hence the indiscriminate bombing of cities without regard for civilian life. To see your city burn was supposed to destroy morale. Salford Royal Hospital after an air raid, June 1941

At Fernleaf Street in Moss Side a total of 24 people died. Ten of them lived at No.54 and included three young families of whom 6 were children. The street sustained a further direct hit at No.60 and all five members of the same family, including 3 children, perished. The street was so badly damaged that half of it was subsequently demolished. In Stretford the biggest loss of life was sustained at Stanley Road where a land mine descended by parachute. It exploded, smashing four houses and taking more than 30 lives. So violent was the explosion that some victims could not be identified - an anonymous fate that fell to 44 people during the course of the War. In 1941 a major raid on June 2nd struck the old Salford Royal Hospital at the Adelphi on Chapel Street. A bomb blasted half of the entire facia of the building and killed 14 nurses who were engaged in a staff meeting. The building was restored and has recently been converted into luxury flats but it still retains a memorial plaque to the nurses on its frontage. Air raids continued until 1944, but by then they had greatly diminished due to the decimation of the Luftwaffe. They were replaced by guided missiles - the infamous V1 Flying Bomb, the “Doodlebug” and the V2 Rocket. Manchester was beyond the V2’s range, fortunate in view of its destructive power. However, the V1 had the capability to reach the city and an attack was launched in 1944 on Christmas Eve with terrible consequences. One of the missiles fell on Oldham and killed 27 people.

The Material Damage To The City Victorian Manchester has many notable buildings

As far as the first aim was concerned the Luftwaffe displayed conspicuous inaccuracy in Manchester, which suggests that the second stratagem was the more likely - terror. In the Battle of Britain when they initially attacked the fighter airfields to cripple the RAF (and almost succeeded), they switched abruptly to civilian bombing - an inexplicable decision which cost them the Battle. Manchester’s industry survived to make war material, the Docks and its ships to transport armaments and food. A few bombs on the locks of the Ship Canal would have rendered the waterway useless. But the City suffered... The Cathedral was hit; the Free Trade Hall was gutted with only its walls still standing as an outer shell; the Royal Exchange suffered the same treatment - its magnificent trading hall destroyed. The Shambles, the mediaeval heart of old Manchester was reduced to only the Wellington Inn and Sinclairs Oyster Bar. Victoria Station, Central Station (now GMEX), the Palace Theatre - all these were grievously damaged but destined to be restored after the War. Many others were damaged or destroyed. The magnificent Assize Courts, a Gothic masterpiece did not rise again, nor did the Victoria Hotel.

Piccadilly, Manchester’s great Square had one entire side, consisting of four matching blocks of cotton goods warehouses, go up in a spectacular blaze. Their site is now entirely occupied by the City Tower and hotel complex spanning from Mosley Street to Portland Street. A stroll through the Northern Quarter or Spinningfields can still reveal a few “crofts”, now car parks, where once stood buildings, but are actually relic “bombsites”.

“Plotting” in Autumn Plotting time is very busy now, all the harvest is in, well nearly, and all the plants that are not hardy are inside or waiting for the weatherman to mention 'Frost', the signal for rapid action. My 'Jack be little' miniature pumpkins are ready for Halloween, sitting on a window cill looking slightly 'Christmassie', waiting to be lit on the 31st October. There isn't much to plant just now unless you want to try growing something like 'Blue Basil' on your window cill or experimenting with Chillies or Peppers. They help to brighten your mood just by being green and the scent of the Basil is wonderful. Mossfield Allotments, Swinton: The plots at the Mossfield allotments are soon to be offered to people on the waiting list so, if you want a plot and you haven't applied yet, please contact the Salford Allotment Federation secretary at Carolyn.Collins@me.com.

The Mayor’s Support: Salford Big Day Out was a great day for meeting and talking about anything 'green'. The City Mayor, Paul Dennett and Barbara Keeley MP were both in close discussion with Don Booth, Chairman of the Salford Allotment Federation, about all things 'allotmenty'. They are both very supportive of the idea of exercise and eating well whilst enjoying the fresh air and companionship of being a 'plotter'. Tindall Street, Eccles: Here we have next year’s Spring Cabbage and hardy Cauliflowers coming up, and our Spinach and Parsnips are doing well. The onion sets and garlic are planted and so the plotting for next year is well in hand. Top 10 Vegetables to Grow Over Winter: 1. Onions and Shallots 2. Garlic 3. Spring Onions 4. Spinach 5. Broad Beans 6. Peas 7. Asparagus 8. Winter Salads 9. Spring Cabbage 10. Sugar Snaps
