Knit “Twiddle Muffs” for The Alzheimer's Society! On Friday 29th September, Jackie Hamilton, ably assisted by News Anchor & Journalist, So Rahman, delivered an address to a packed house at George's restaurant in Worsley, explaining the need for and benefits of 'Twiddle Muffs'. These little knitted muffs have small articles sewn to the inside and outside so that an Alzheimer's sufferer can 'twiddle' them. This helps calm the patient and avoids them 'twiddling' something that could do them harm. Several volunteers are producing muffs, which are given away 'free' to sufferers and/or their .
supporters but, the need is greater than the supply and many more knitters are needed. If you can help, please contact either • Jackie: 0161 789 6120, or her colleague, • Dorothy Parr: 0161 661 0281 Jackie also gave details of the 'Singing with Dementia' group run by June Smith every Wednesday at the Humphrey Booth Centre in Swinton. It is free to attend and a lunch of 'soup and a roll' will cost you £1.60. For more information visit their website: www.singingwithdementia.co.uk If you are interested in either group, please do get in touch. Also donations to both groups are welcome but not obligatory.

MISSION CHRISTMAS 2017 Sadly, the statistics are still standing that 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. This means there are children going to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. As Christmas approaches, 192,336 children in our city will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, the support and generosity of Manchester people was overwhelming and helped us distribute £2,897,259 (£1.96m in 2015) worth of toys and helped almost 61,873 children. We are asking for your help again this year as we are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many of them as possible in Greater Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city, but it WILL make a difference to so many families on Christmas Day.

We are working with our friends at Rotary don’t miss all the good stuff they’re doing for Christmas, especially around their great book shop in the centre. We start with the Christmas Lights switch on, on Saturday 18th November. There will be decorations, Santa’s grotto, giveaways for all children and plenty of stalls. So you can get a good start on your Christmas shopping, festive food – olives, free range eggs, world-famous black pudding, arts and crafts, and much more. Saturday 2nd December see the return of the popular LIVE reindeer - bring your family to meet Rudolph and HIS family, as well as the usual fun, food, Santa’s grotto and gifts to buy.
Bridgford & Sons Funeral Services
Saturday 9th December brings the Maker’s Market on Eccles’ traditional Church Street with its food and drink as well as interesting crafts and clothes for everyone. Then on Saturday 16th December, it’s the everpopular Last Minute Christmas Shopping Market, along with our monthly Craft and Farmer’s Market, games, entertainment, giveaways, Santa’s grotto and loads more fun. Saturday 2nd December This year it all takes place Saturday 2nd December. Monton Village Community Association (MVCA), are proud to be working with our good friends from Monton Unitarian Church, as well as Eccles Rotary. Oh and of course, our North Pole team of Santa, reindeer and the elves… Our Christmas Lights switch on (well, they’ll already have been on, but this is the time Santa comes and officially starts the Festival Season!) will be going ahead as usual, with many of the regular activities as well as several, fantastic new elements. The lights cost thousands of pounds every year and MVCA work hard to raise this money, then deal with the logistics so everyone in Monton can enjoy them.
Come and enjoy Santa’s grotto for children (old and young!) during the afternoon and evening. For children of all ages, there will be Festive food and drink, with a warming hot chocolate here, and a warming Christmas punch (hic!) there, sweet and savoury nibbles for all – it’s a day not to be missed! Look out especially for the LIVE reindeer, back in Monton for the second time. Plus fairground rides, entertainment and stalls where you can find your festive stocking fillers. We are working hard to deliver these great activities, there may be some changes nearer the time, so please check the website for updates. For more information visit

The Richest Man in the World... and his 3,000 libraries Few people today would recognise the name Andrew Carnegie. They might know of the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City; they might be aware of a number of charities – and they might know that their local library, for some reason, is called the “Carnegie Library” – as it is in Eccles.
SCOTLAND – EARLY LIFE Andrew Carnegie, the man behind the name and so many institutions, was born in 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland. His father was a handloom weaver and the family home was a simple cottage where a single room served as living, kitchen and bedroom for the entire family. In 1848 his father resolved to emigrate to the USA with his family.
THE NEW WORLD They settled in Allegheny, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where his father again worked at weaving and Andrew became a “bobbin boy”, changing spools of thread in a cotton mill for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. For this he was paid $1.20 per week (the equivalent of $36 in today’s money). Andrew was supremely ambitious and, a year later at the age of 14, he became a telegram messenger boy for the Ohio Telegraph Company. He doubled his salary to $2.50 per week, but used his job – and an extraordinary memory – to remember and become known to – most of the important business people of Pittsburgh. So dedicated was he to telegraphy that he could listen to the tapping of a message, decipher it by ear and recite the message without waiting for it to be printed! His abilities and enthusiasm were rewarded by successive promotions. He also spent much time studying at a private library owned by a Colonel Anderson who opened his collection to poor 22 LIVE IT LOCAL
boys who wished to improve themselves. Carnegie vowed that “if ever wealth came to me” he would provide the same facility, “for which we were indebted to the noble man”.
THE ROAD TO WEALTH In 1853 Carnegie was hired to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as a Secretary/ Telegraph Operator at a salary of $4 per week ($125 today) by Thomas A. Scott and, 4 years later, was offered the position of Superintendant of the Western Division of the Company, at just 24 years old. He was now on a salary of $1500 a year – equal to $47,000 in 2017. Carnegie was now in one of the biggest growth industries in the country and in a position to take advantage of opportunities, “perks” of his position. Scott helped him in this regard, together with John Thomson, the President of the Company. For it seemed that both were enjoying a “gravy train” of gifts from businesses which supplied goods or services to the Company. What today would be called corruption was, in those days, almost a custom. It could involve company shares, insider trading information or cash. So it was that Scott helped Carnegie to make his first investment - $500 in shares in a company which had a contract to carry messages for the PRC. It was the beginning of many years of such deals that involved the mutual interest of the three men and Carnegie steadily built the capital for his later investments. n 1864 Carnegie invested $40,000 in a property in Venango, Pennsylvania. This was to prove a bonanza, for it was a prime location for the first American oil boom. In one year his property yielded over $1 million in profits from its oil wells! He had invested in the iron and steel industry before the American Civil War, mainly because of PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

the need of the railway for track steel. The War and its needs for shells, armour plating for ships and more rails, now focussed him on that industry. He left the railroad company and began to form iron and steel production companies. He formed the Keystone Bridge Works and the Union Ironworks and though he was no longer with the railroad they became his biggest customer – a relationship cemented by the issue of stock in his companies to Scott and Thomson, his old associates. He even named a steel plant after Thomson. His interests and overwhelming dominance of the industry grew through expansion and acquisition. He acquired the iron ore deposits near Lake Superior, the coal mining companies, the rail lines to convey the ore to Pittsburgh and the plants to turn it into metal. He pioneered the adoption of new technology for a better product at lower prices. By 1901 Carnegie was 66 years old and wanted to retire. He had converted all his companies into joint-stock corporations and this attracted the interest of J.P.Morgan, the great banker who had a vision of combining all the industry into a mega corporation that would dominate world markets – US Steel. Morgan’s takeover of the industry was the biggest deal in history at that time, capitalised at $1,400,000,000! Carnegie’s share of the purchase price was $225,639,000 ($6.5bn today). And this was just his interests in the iron and steel industry.
THE PHILANTHROPIST Carnegie, despite having left the land of his birth when he was 13, had abiding memories of his origins. In 1881 he had taken his family, including his mother, on a trip to the United Kingdom. They toured Scotland and made their way to Dunfermline where Carnegie first demonstrated his passion for education of the poor, by funding his very first “Carnegie Library”.
Eccles Carnegie Library opened 1907
This was to be the beginning of a vast programme worldwide that would see over 3,000 such educational facilities built for many deprived communities. Thus, after the sale of his iron and steel enterprises, Carnegie devoted himself to his library-building programme, directed at the English-speaking world. He bought Skibo Castle in Scotland, had a mansion in London and residences in the USA. He divided his time equally to both sides of the Atlantic. His offering to any local authority, be it in the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa or colonial possession was simple: You donate the land on which you want your library, budget for books, staffing and maintenance – and the Carnegie Trust will pay to engage architects and builders to provide it. By this means not only public libraries but also university and scientific research libraries were created. In all their architectural splendour, everything from classical through gothic to Tudor, they still largely exist in more than 3,000 towns. So it is that we have a Carnegie Library in Eccles, proudly standing in the middle of town in all its neo-classical glory, since 1907. It was recently refurbished and decorated by Salford City Council and is, quite simply, beautiful.
IN MEMORIAM Andrew Carnegie died at his Shadow Brook estate in Massachusetts on August 11 1919. He had managed to spend almost his entire fortune on a huge range of worthy causes, including the libraries. A total of $350,659,653 (£76.9 billion today). The $30 million that was left was given to charities, pensioners and foundations. He was probably the most generous philanthropist of all time; believing that “shrouds do not have pockets” and you cannot “take it with you”.

Plotting: A Round-Up for 2017 Plotting on the Macmillan Plot... The last of this years' crops, except the overwintering toughies, are now safely stored, eaten or going 'mushy' in their beds. Our parsnips, all two remaining of our failed crop, will be on the table at Christmas, along with our sprouts and our 'Christmas' potatoes, which are growing well in the greenhouse, whilst our shallots are now pickling nicely! Your winter onions and garlic should be looking good by now, we've got a forest of Basil with no takers. Someone slipped with the seed packet and our new strawberry plantlets have taken well. Our seed catalogues are being well thumbed, it isn't long before the orders go in and we can't wait to get going with early planting, even though my dad told me to “make haste slowly”, I can't help it! I'm ready for the off along with the rest of the Macmillan volunteers. Macmillan has received two fantastic donations from local companies: Wickes of Clifton has donated 8 large bags of compost and B&Q has given £200 of various allotment essentials for which the group is most grateful.
Around the City... The Council and it's staff are keeping up the momentum on allotments, looking out for new sites and keeping up regeneration where possible, the health and social benefits are beyond question. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504
TINDALL STREET: The electricity supply is now
connected so we can see to make a brew or use the loo and the 'stumpery' is under construction. We are waiting for United Utilities to treat the Japanese Knotweed since the infestation is spreading - this needs to be done whilst the plants are dormant. BLACKLEACH: The initial inspections have been made and notices served on unworked plots. It's hoped that new lettings here will reduce the waiting list and get the site more intensively used. HILTON LANE: Discussions are going ahead, with Bellway, about the proposed new allotments on Hilton Lane, Walkden where they have agreed to build on the old sports field. If possible these plots will be linked with the raised beds at Harrop Fold where Don hopes to agree terms for six plots. BEECHFIELDS: Allotments here are still under discussion with the Council and Don hopes to have an agreement early in the New Year. SWINTON: The proposed development of the
old Swinton Sewage Works, for houses and greenspace, by Bellway is still under discussion. Don has asked Bellway to bear in mind that, if Planning Permission is granted, they will be expected to allocate at least 0.25 acres to establish more allotments as a permanent greenspace. POORLOTS, IRLAM: This site has been the subject of a lot of discussion between the Council and the Salford Allotment Federation. Don Booth, SAF chairman, is awaiting a decision as to whether the Goverments' Planning Inspectorate agree that land mistakenly registered as 'common' should be returned to the allotments.
