It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Don’t you love this time of year as all the Christmas festivities get underway? Christmas hit the shops back in September (far too early!) but I think now is the right time to embrace it; get stuck into mince pies and mulled wine and visit all the Christmas fairs you can!

We can all spread the Christmas cheer and help those in need over the festive period. Simple gestures such as donating to a Food Bank, buying a homeless person lunch, giving a new toy to a children’s charity.... all easy to do and very gratefully received.

Winners of “The Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” Award Asian Restaurant Awards 2018
Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 On Monday 5th March 2018, the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) hosted their first Asian Restaurant Awards. The winners of the inaugural Asian Restaurant Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony, held at the Manchester Hilton. The evening, attended by over 500 leading restaurateurs, chefs, food journalists and VIP guests, was hosted by BBC TV news anchor, Barbita Sharma.
The Naz, in Monton, scooped the presitgious title of “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant”. The Asian Restaurant Awards were organised by the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) which represents the nation’s 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success. The Travelling Library
Lord Egerton’s travelling library c.1615 44 volumes, bound in vellum 3 groups: •Religion and Philosophy (Bible, Aquinas) •History (Tacitus, Suetonius, Sallust) •Poetry (Virgil, Ovid, Terence) The book case is: 16" x 11⅛ " x 3⅜" Only 4 such collections exist William Hakewill (1574 – 1655)
Readers of the last magazine will have seen the account of the Ellesmere Chaucer, an original copy of The Canterbury Tales, now an exhibit at the Huntington Library in California. One other item, amongst the 4,400 purchased by Henry E. Huntington in 1917 from the 4th Earl, was a travelling library, once in the possession of Sir Thomas Egerton, an English nobleman and judge who was appointed Lord Chancellor by Elizabeth I in 1596. He served in the traditions of Thomas Wolsey and Sir Thomas More and later acquired the titles of 1st Baron Ellesmere (1603) and 1st Viscount Brackley (1616). He had also been offered the title of Earl of Bridgewater in 1617, but he declined this honour and died just a few days later. In his judicial role, Sir Thomas would have travelled across the country and would have taken a small library of books with him. How small can be gauged from the dimensions of his own collection. The book case is 16" x 11⅛" x 3⅜". It has a wooden frame and is covered in brown morocco leather, disguising it as a large folio volume. It is one of only 4 such collections that exist today. There is a total of 44 volumes within the case, each one bound in vellum. This collection is believed to date from c.1615. A catalogue of the books faces them on the inside of the 16 LIVE IT LOCAL
cover, painted in three columns surrounded by an arch design bearing a crest and a coat of arms. This item is commonly referred to as the 'Egerton Travelling Library'. The collection comprises 3 groups or topics: Religion and Philosophy (featuring the Bible, and works by Thomas Aquinas); History (by the Roman writers Tacitus, Suetonius, Sallust); and Poetry (again featuring works by the Roman poets Virgil, Ovid, Terence). As an undergraduate at Brasenose, Oxford, he studied the Liberal Arts. On his journeys, he was accompanied by a young secretary, John Donne, the famed poet and cleric, who no doubt enjoyed being party to the Chancellor's acquisition of books for his nascent library, later the Bridgewater Library, which grew rapidly. Donne had been appointed Chief Secretary at the age of 25. It was this entire library that Henry E. Huntington purchased from the 4th Earl. The actual size of each volume can be judged from the image above which shows one volume being held between a forefinger and thumb. The travelling compendium was probably one of four commissioned by William Hakewill over a period of four or five years. Hakewill was a lawyer, bibliophile and a M.P. and gifted each set to a friend.

TIME TO GET COSY AS THE COLDER MONTHS SET IN with THE HEIGHT CARPETS & FLOORING
It seems our amazing summer has definitely come to an end, and what better way to make us feel cosy than to get some new flooring! As co-owner of The Height Carpets & Flooring alongside my colleague Graham, I wanted to offer some tips on how to update your flooring to get ready for the autumn and winter, which will last for years to come. Think about installing quality underlay for insulation to keep your room cosy, reduce noise and give your flooring a more luxurious feel, whilst also helping it to last longer. Choose warm tones for all types of flooring but colours that will also brighten up your home on the dark nights. Different shades of grey such as this one are very popular at the moment. How much foot traffic will the room be getting? Will you need a tough durable carpet for a busy household or a soft silky thick pile carpet to create a truly luxurious feel? To bring the warmth of the Mediterranean to your home, consider statement vinyl for your bathroom, kitchen or dining space. We work with the local community building relationships as part of our service measuring up and fitting the latest designs of high-quality carpets, vinyl, laminate, LVT and rugs, to suit all budgets. Customer service is of utmost importance to us which is why we back up our work with a 12-month peace of mind guarantee – check out our Google reviews. In the meantime, to get your home ready for the winter and the next few years ahead, call Anthony (me) on 0161 465 3299 or visit our Facebook page.

The Autumn Harvest The Macmillan Plot Harvest time for many crops has passed and the plot looks bare, but don’t be fooled, there is plenty going on and growing hasn’t finished! Our runner beans carried on cropping into October and they still had flowers opening, a pleasant splash of red colour for autumn.
Our orange scented Geranium was so popular that we took lots of cuttings and these are overwintering in the polytunnel. The pink/red flowers are prolific and if you’re not too fond of the usual Geranium scent, this variety makes a good alternative. Altogether, it’s been a bonanza harvest!
We were given some clippings from a Bay tree and attempted to grow some half standard trees for patio pots and they seem to have taken quite well. We will pot them on ready to give out next Spring and in the meantime we can enjoy their fragrant aroma and use them for cooking. The rainbow chard has been very useful in curries too and the colours stand out amidst the green stems across the plot.
Around the City...
The summer sun produced a bumper crop of red and blackcurrants so we collected hardwood cuttings and they are shooting nicely, ready for planting out in Spring in the hope of another glorious summer. The same happened with our strawberries and the runners are potted up ready for planting out. We hadn’t hoped for too much from our fig tree but if the prolific fruits ripen, we will be in for a treat! We had the loveliest eating and cooking apples from what we were reliably told was a Crab Apple tree too!
Blackleach Allotments may benefit from some reorganisation and if monies from a nearby development is made available, the scheme could bring a big improvement to the site.
We tried growing a smooth skinned cucumber vine and were rewarded with several large fruits; the variety was Telegraph and it’s worth growing just for the flowers. The Chantenay carrot crop was spectacular and long-lived so we are still lifting big roots and we have located a family of guinea pigs which are very grateful for the tops! Hopefully, our parsnips will be just as bountiful. 20 LIVE IT LOCAL
Beechfield Allotments Discussions are moving slowly but steadily towards re-opening this site and there are now 54 applications for plots. As soon as the work of planning and programming are completed a committee will be formed to get the site cultivated.
Poorlots should have been looking forward to improvement and extension over this winter but legal problems have resulted in unavoidable delays. Until there is a resolution of these matters the scheme is on ‘hold’. Tindall Street has asked for the smaller site at Lorne Street to be made independent and granted its own self-management agreement. The Council officers have agreed to look into this and the site will have autonomy, subject to no problems arising. If you have enjoyed reading our developments over the year and would like to try your hand at plotting, anywhere across the City, please contact the Salford Allotment Federation secretary at carolyn.collins@me.co.uk Written by Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

HELP US REACH OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY THE 2MMS JUNIOR YOUTH CLUB EST 1970
2MMs is a Junior Youth Club based in Winton, providing a place for 8 to11 year olds to meet on a Friday night, socialise and play games such as table tennis and pool. We also organise special events and parties for the children, and this summer we held a family funday at Monton AFC with the help of Worsley Rotary. Founded in 1970, we are now celebrating 48 years. It’s a great achievement, especially as the club is run by volunteers who generously give their time for free and we are self-funding. We are determined to reach our 50th Anniversary in 2020 and desperately need funds to keep the club open - for rent, bills and to replace equipment which is in poor condition. Geoff Grieves is now 86; he started the 2mms as he saw a need for activities for the children of Eccles and the surrounding area. With two friends, Don Catteral and Tony Peach (former Editor of the Eccles & Patricroft Journal), and with their own money, they opened on Friday 11th September 1970.

Geoff still attends every Friday at the age of 86, even through ill health and two new knees! We want to ensure the club’s survival for the 35 to 45 youngsters we take off the streets on a Friday night, so are appealing to our local community for support. If you could donate the price of a couple of coffees or a burger or two, your kindness would be really appreciated.
