Helping Struggling Families with School Costs A new initiative has been launched to help struggling Salford families meet the costs of going to school. SmartStart Manchester & Salford helps families living on a low income with school uniform, sports kit and stationery so their children can fit in and achieve at school. Run by children’s charity Wood Street Mission, the project will be funded by donations of goods and financial support from individual donors and local businesses. Roseanne Sweeney Chief Executive said: “Salford has high levels of child poverty with as many as 1 in 2 children in some wards living below the poverty line. Doing well at school is key to breaking the cycle of poverty but many families can’t afford the costs of school uniform or sports kit which negatively impacts on their children’s experience of school.”

“SmartStart Manchester & Salford is aimed at helping struggling families with school costs so they don’t have to cut back on other essentials or get into debt. It’s also about helping their children fit in at school so they can participate fully and grow up to fulfil their potential and break the cycle of poverty. Supporting the project is a great way to help local children in a very practical way and invest in the future of the city.” Wood Street Mission is appealing for donations of new non-branded school uniform items, sports kit and stationery now available from many high street retailers. For more information contact Sophie Bell by emailing sophie@woodstreetmission.org.uk or go to www.woodstreetmission.org.uk.

BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE As your child draws to the end of their primary school education you are faced with a range of choices. You’ll no doubt want your child educating across a broad number of subjects to achieve the best results that they are capable of, whilst enjoying themselves as they grow up and develop their own sense of self to go out into this world as an individual. Please take your time to think about the time your child will spend in school and how you would like them to turn out at the end of their schooling. Ideally you’ll want your child brought up in a safe, family environment that matches your values, where they are known personally throughout their schooling from their early years to adulthood, and to entering their chosen profession or University.

We could say that we would provide that and more for you and your child. It would be better still to let you hear what the last ISA school inspection report said of Bridgewater School. They said that pupils’ personal development is outstanding, and that the school is highly successful in its aim to develop pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural understanding. Pupils are confident, articulate and sensitive to each other’s needs. The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association went on to say “I think that what Bridgewater does so wonderfully is sow a seed inside each and every pupil that will grow into something very special.” Please feel free to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the Head and a tour of the school. For information the date of our Entrance Examination is Friday, 29th January 2016.

Allotments Opening in Swinton Since our last ‘Plotters’ article, matters have been progressing well! We now have circa 30 applicants for allotments at Beechfield, Swinton (approx. 50 plots) and a committee which is ready to get the South Avenue site reopened as soon as they can. Even better, the City Council has confirmed that the Mossfield Road, Swinton site (approx. 50 plots) can go ahead as soon as a programme has been drawn up. This process has started and we will be holding a public meeting in September so that anyone interested in joining the waiting list can do so. To add your name to the list please send your name and contact details to Carolyn, the Salford Allotment Federation secretary:Email carolyn.collins@me.com who will keep you informed of progress.

If you have experience of allotments or working on a committee, and would like to be considered for a role on the committee for either of these sites, we would be pleased to hear from you. Local History

The “Matchstick Man” Part II : “I am a Simple Man...” L.S Lowry by Ida Kar 1954

Following WW2, now free of his wartime duties and with an indulgent employer in the Pall Mall Property Company, Lowry went through a period of depression. His mother had died in 1939 and, although he had many friends, he spent much time alone. He neglected his rented Pendlebury home to the extent that his landlord evicted him and re-possessed it. But Lowry was now a man of some means and he promptly bought “the Elms” in Mottram-inLongdendale, Tameside, in 1948. Though he thought it ugly and uncomfortable, it was to be his home until his death, almost 30 years later.

THE SEASCAPES Lowry loved the sea and chose to spend his holidays, over many years, on the Durham and Northumberland coast, where he made many lasting friendships. He was particularly fond of Berwick on Tweed and the Sunderland areas. Here he did many paintings and sketches of the beaches, sea and shipping. He also painted the coal mines in the area. His sea images are far removed from the popular “Lowryesque” industrial and “Matchstick” world. They are closer to his very early work; sombre, dark and almost ethereal, in the colours that he always used – greys, black,

vermilion, Prussian blue and yellow ochre. He almost invariably stayed at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland (now The Marriott). At the Hotel and nearby cafes and restaurants, he would amuse himself by utilising any scrap of paper available...a serviette, a ticket, a bill...to sketch anything that caught his imagination. Pencil, or a nub of charcoal, created images that he would then present to children of other diners. Such sketches are now worth thousands of pounds to those who kept them!

RETIREMENT In 1952, at 65 years of age, Lowry retired from his job as Chief Cashier at the Pall Mall Company. Despite having attained his senior position, a “desk job”, he still liked collecting rents from the Company’s tenants personally. Quite why he had persisted in his job - whilst keeping its existence a secret, even from close friends - is a mystery. His growing artistic fame had brought him financial security, perhaps his job was a tie to the humbler life that he depicted in his works... In 1952 Lowry was appointed Official Artist at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth ll, though no notable work appears to have resulted from this Appointment. It was, however, an Honour in itself, to be so recognised. When a long-time

friend married and moved to Southampton, Lowry visited and produced, amongst others, a prized painting now belonging to that City - a local engineering marvel “The Floating Bridge”. A whimsical painting in 1957, is “Man Lying on a Wall”; Lowry had a mischievous sense of humour this is a caricature figure (for no good reason at all), stretched out on a wall, with a briefcase. On the briefcase are the initials LSL... It was in that year that a 13 year-old girl, Carol Ann Lowry (no relation), with ambitions to be an artist, wrote to the great man for advice on achieving her ambition. Lowry visited her family in Heywood and befriended them. The friendship with Carol was to last the rest of his life.

THE SECRET PAINTINGS Lowry never married and no romantic relationships are known of him. However, following his death, a body of his work - produced secretly, seemingly over the course of many years, emerged. These paintings are erotic and depict a woman known as “Ann”. According to Richard Dorment, Art Critic of “The Daily Telegraph” in 1988, these “reveal a sexual anxiety which is never so much as hinted at in the work of the previous 60 years”. The works are collectively known as “the Mannequin Sketches” and they are kept at the Lowry Centre . Visitors may view them by request. A complex man indeed...?

AWARDS AND HONOURS As Lowry’s fame grew, so did the desire of local and national bodies to shower him with honours. He proved however, to be very discriminating in what he was prepared to accept ! Starting in 1945, he was awarded an Honorary Master of Arts Degree by the University of Manchester, followed, in 1961, by an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the same institution. Somewhat tardily (they had been slow to buy his paintings), the City of Salford followed, in PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

1965, by granting the Freedom of the City to Lowry and, in 1975, both Salford and Liverpool Universities awarded Honorary Doctor of Letters degrees to him. So much for what Lowry was prepared to accept in the way of recognition... On a national level Lowry TWICE refused Appointments to The Order of the British Empire, as an Officer (OBE) in 1955 and as a Commander (CBE) in 1961. These honours are amongst the highest in the Land - Lowry wanted none of it... He was prepared to go even further. In 1968 he refused a Knighthood! Still the “powers that be” persisted and Lowry remained adamant. He refused an Appointment to the Companion of Honour (CH) in both 1972 and 1976. All these Honours are coveted by the elite of Politics, Business, the Public Service and The Arts - but not it seemed by the Pendlebury Rent Collector! Lowry had, in fact, set a Record (unsought), of having declined more Honours than any other person - the Record still stands... Lowry died of pneumonia at the Woods Hospital in Glossop in 1976, aged 88. He was interred at Manchester’s Southern Cemetery next to his parents. He left an estate of £298,000 and a large collection of his own works and by others to Carol Ann Lowry, his friend since her childhood.

THE LEGACY His cultural legacy has multiplied in the years following his death. His works are valued in the multi-millions worldwide, he has had songs, a ballet, a postage stamp and statues dedicated to him, buildings named after him. He chronicled, in paint, charcoal and pencil, a landscape and people that has now almost vanished, but live on in his work. A “simple man”? Perhaps, but also a very special man.

Committed to Landlords and their Properties 4you Lettings have been working hard for Landlords from their prominent office on Eccles Old Road for eight years. When asked what is the key to their success, office manager Karen Corps said, “Although in such a fast paced industry, keeping at the cutting edge is vital, so is keeping our Landlords comfortable, well informed, well advised and well protected. Ongoing staff training and commitment to providing only the best service and products makes our business stand out to Landlords.” 4you Lettings deal with all aspects of renting property and offer free no obligation valuations.

Landlords can choose to manage their own properties or have them fully managed by 4you, or for those who want them to manage the bits they’d rather not do themselves, a bespoke service is available without the premium price tag. “Some Landlords love managing their properties but don’t like, for example, collecting the rent, or would rather someone else deal with the repairs, or maintenance visits.” Additionally, vitally important legal updates and compliance are implemented to ensure all tenancies, properties and Landlords are always right up to date. 4you Lettings are offering new landlords 6 MONTHS FULL MANAGEMENT FOR FREE so give them a call and let them deal with your management, leaving you time to relax. One of Salford's Premier Wedding Reception Venues Is Set To Get Even Better! With catering in partnership with the village's very own Blackstick's restaurant, Monton Sports Club has built itself a reputation as one of the most idyllic and friendly venues to mark your big day in the area. More than ÂŁ500,000 has already been spent on the venue over the past three years. That has seen the historic club transformed from a place dedicated to junior and adult sport to also being a top events space in huge demand. A further ÂŁ60,000 is being spent in the coming weeks to add an extra WOW factor to the venue, which has already proved popular with dozens of happy couples over the past year. The investment will give the club a fresh and more modern feel, as well as state-of-the-art air conditioning and lighting systems and a new bar area.

There are two rooms available for hire, both with private bars, but the space is at its best when both are combined giving a total seating capacity of 170. This is reduced to 140 allowing for a dance floor, buffet table, DJ or band area, and a cake table. Guests can mingle and relax on the outside patio area, taking in the picturesque setting of the club, with views across the sports field and beyond. A full table and chair dressing service is available with a variety of colours and centre piece options. As well as weddings, we can help organise any family event or Christmas party. For further details contact Hayley, our events coordinator, who will be delighted to show you what we have to offer in person. Tel: 0161 789 0377 E: enquiries@montonsportsclub.co.uk

A Perfect Fit for the Perfect Day by Proposals Bridalwear, Swinton

For the Bride... We are now fully into the Wedding season and with such an amazing array of wedding dresses out there it can be overwhelming to make that decision and where to start? Most brides start searching for their dress a year or nine months before the wedding, but even if you are getting married this year, there is still time to purchase “off the peg”. Wedding dresses typically start from £200. Very popular with brides this year is the slim silhouette with embroidered detail, such as the KittyChen Couture 2016 range. This August, at Proposals, we introduce the ‘Candy Quinn’ label, a new and exciting brand from award winning bridal design house Mark Lesley. The 2016 collection has over 50 new designs in Lace, Tulle, Chiffon, Stretch Georgette and Satin - a contemporary range with a daring edge, beautiful fabric and soft colours.

Kitty Chen Couture: Cassidy

As well as finding your perfect dress it is key that you find the perfect tailor to ensure it fits you just the way it should and this is not something you will find in all bridal shops. At Proposals we have our own tailor with over 45 years experience who will ensure you look the best.

For the Groom... On trend this Autumn are slim fit suits, giving a fitted and dashing look to Grooms, Ushers and Best Men. The most popular colour currently is the striking Royal Blue, which gives a fresh stylish look to your wedding photographs. However, to ensure the right cut and fit it is vital to visit an experienced suit hire shop who can give you the best advice and tips for your big day. Proposals Mens Suit Hire are the Number One in Salford and provide a wide range of wedding attire from Tails, Edwardian Style, Lounge Suits, Dinner Suits, Slimfit and Kilts. Colours range from Royal Blue to Brown, Navy, Grey or Black and we can cater for those little page boys too! Special rates for multiple suit hire are offered too, so contact Rod: rod@proposalsbridalwear.com or 0161 794 5200. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

With an estimated 23.5 million people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa, CWB uses cricket as a tool to deliver HIV/AIDS awareness messages. Previous projects have seen the charity help communities in Rwanda continue their recovery from civil war and use cricket to rehabilitate former child soldiers in Uganda.

“The children are so enthusiastic and you feel you are making a real difference. I would recommend
