“Home Instead Salford IS NOW RECRUITING! My name is Emma Newns and I have recently joined Home Instead, Salford. I have been recruited to provide help and support in the office and am very excited about working for such a professional homecare organisation. When I was considering the position I made sure to research the company in depth. I was extremely impressed with everything I read, especially the minimum calls of one hour. Having now joined the company, I am not disappointed. It’s also fantastic that I can still visit clients in the community as part as my role within Home Instead.
Our client-focused care plans, the ‘matching’ of clients to specific CAREGivers and the minimum visits of at least an hour means that some very special relationships have already been forged. Our CAREGivers enjoy: n Excellent Working Conditions n Friendly Atmosphere n Holiday Pay n Free Training If you would like more information on the services we offer or more about employment opportunities, please contact us. We are holding an informal ‘Recruitment Hour’ on 7th September 2016, 3pm to 4pm at our offices in Swinton, next door to the Humphrey Booth Centre. All are welcome to share cake, coffee and chatter. We really do look forward to meeting you all!
Our clients are looking for like-minded people for support and companionship at home. Home Instead Salford is now recruiting. If you have a couple of hours, or more, available apply to become a CAREGiver and enjoy a rewarding part-time career while helping people in your community.

Antz Junction: Helping local people into employment We do not judge, but try to help. Antz Junction is a Greater Manchester charity which started in November 2011 at Swinton. We now have two Social Enterprise Centres in Swinton and Bolton. Our Swinton centre is located at Junction Eco-Park, Rake Lane, M27 8LR (the old Chloride Batteries site). In addition to providing a place to go and connect, they provide space for local start-up charities and businesses, improving lives and commercial enterprise. We support working age people into appropriate employment, particularly those living in areas of multiple deprivations or otherwise: n Vulnerable n Long Term Unemployed n Marginalised n Mental Health Problems We realise that many such persons have complex lives and psychological barriers to work, are hard to reach and have low self-esteem, with nowhere to go and no one to talk to.
We have recently run a 6 week Marriott Training Academy, with 8 members taken on placement across Greater Manchester: n 2 at the Manchester Renaissance n 5 at Worsley Park n 1 at Manchester Airport 5 members have since secured employment, and feedback has been extremely positive: n 93% stated that the project had improved their quality of life. n 100% felt their confidence; employability; social interaction had all improved since participating in the course. Community News Artists impression of the future Veteran’s Garage
Buildings to be restored
VETERANS GARAGE Veterans Garage is a new project based at City Airport, Barton. It is a unique approach to providing support to Military Veterans across the North West to have a stable social hub, learn new skills and receive the support and advice that is available to them. The aim is to build a hub for ex-servicemen and the local community to come together, creating a venue for unique events that can raise funds and awareness for local causes. Jayson Redshaw, a 27 year old Manchester veteran, lost his best friend on the front line in Afghanistan and vowed to help others to deal with the grief and anxieties he faced upon leaving active duty. Jayson started the project with his brother, Dan, Vice Chairman of the Salford Armed Forces Veterans Network. t: 07864 680459
A grade II listed WWII airport terminal building, donated by The Peel Group, will be restored into a classic car & motorcycle restoration garage. Supporting North West Veterans suffering from recent combat stress, the garage will also work to alleviate some of the loneliness and isolation of the older generation. Ex-servicemen of all ages can collaborate, restoring classic cars and motorcycles, all the while raising money and awareness. There will also be a vibrant community club house with stylish lounges, club meeting and business facilities, and dining space with incredible food and beverages. Help us spread the word and get others interested. Personal donations are welcomed. Equally, if there are companies that can help with materials, furnishings or equipment, or even corporate sponsorship.

Salford City College does the Treble: Number 1 College for School Leavers, Adults and Apprenticeships Salford City College is officially the top performing general further education (GFE) college in Greater Manchester for school leavers, adults and Apprenticeships. Data from the government’s Skills Funding Agency confirmed Salford City College’s treble success. The high quality teaching and learning at the College was evident in learner satisfaction surveys and the Department for Education league tables. The College was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in December 2015. 16-18 success rates proudly stand at 86%, adult success rates are 89.5% and Apprenticeship success rates 81.6%, putting Salford City College ahead of all other GFE colleges in Greater Manchester.
John Spindler, CEO and Principal of Salford City College said, “This achievement is down to the professionalism of all of our teaching and support staff, their hard work and dedication and the amazing attitude of our students to their studies. Apprenticeship success is supported by the College working with great employers, who provide wonderful opportunities for people starting Apprenticeships in their chosen careers.” Salford City College has exciting plans for September 2016 with each of its centres specialising in curriculum areas. Each centre will be developing new facilities over the next two years to ensure learners will study in state of the art facilities. For more information visit: www.salfordcc.ac.uk

22 December 1940: Buildings in Manchester Piccadilly after the German air raids
The Blitz: Part I
The Salford Casualties Just over 75 years ago... ...was the Battle of Britain, when Hitler’s Luftwaffe failed to gain mastery of our skies and the planned Invasion of Britain from across the Channel was cancelled. But what was not cancelled was “The Blitz” - a ruthless bombing of all our major cities, to destroy not only our will to resist, but also our industrial capacity to continue the War. So it was that the Manchester area became a prime target from August 1940 onward. The Luftwaffe possessed excellent aerial reconnaissance photography of what they viewed as valuable installations; the Salford Docks and its wealth of shipping engaged in the Atlantic trade, and the huge industrial complex of Trafford Park. Intermittent air raids began but not in great strength and caused little damage to those targets. The early raids seemed random with bombs dropping in Manchester City Centre and suburbs (the Palace Theatre on Oxford Street was hit in September). Perhaps these early raids were testing the defences for something bigger to come...
The “Christmas Blitz” Such did, indeed, prove to be the case! On the night of December 22nd/23rd 1940 some 270 bombers arrived over the Manchester area, guided as we now know by radio beams projected from the Continent. Visibility may have been poor, defensive fire intense, or both, for the 272 tons of high explosives and 1,037 incendiary bombs that they unleashed largely missed their targets. Instead they fell on the city centre and on widely spaced suburbs 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
such as Stretford, Salford, Eccles, Winton and even Worsley. In these outlying districts they caused many civilian casualties. The following night of December 23rd/24th, the raiders returned. 171 bombers dropped 195 tons of high explosives and 893 incendiary bombs, mostly failing to hit strategic targets, but devastating Manchester centre and spread over a wide area. Nazi propaganda claimed that Manchester had been burned to the ground. The damage was indeed grievous, but as far as actual damage to morale or war manufacturing capability was concerned, the raids were a complete failure. A detailed account of Manchester’s ordeal will be related in our next issue. For now we shall focus on what the “Christmas Blitz” did locally.
On Our Doorstep On the night of the first raid I was 5 weeks old and lived in Davis Street, Eccles, close to what was Barton Docks, on the Ship Canal. When the air raid sirens sounded my family (all but my father, who was on duty with the Fire Service), took shelter in the “Anderson“ at the end of the garden, sunk into the ground. Shortly afterward, our house and that next door received a direct hit from a bomb and was completely destroyed, but we were saved by the shelter. “Bombed-out” as the expression went at the time, we spent the rest of the War above a shop on Worsley Road, Winton.
The Tragedy At “The Cottage” When I was about 8 years old the family lived in Cypress Road in Winton on the Eccles/Worsley VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local History
Map of “Blitz” sites in Salford
border. One of our local play areas, across Worsley Brook and Barton Road, was a strange area known to us as “McCraes”. It had many attractions: an orchard, many “conker” trees, a huge but tortured copper beech tree with its upper branches collapsed into great mats on which we could recline. The biggest enigma however was a huge crater full of scattered bricks and debris, largely overgrown with brambles... It was only in later years that I came to learn of the dreadful event that had created this scene and that had occurred on the same night as my own home had been destroyed. “The Cottage”, as the house that had stood on the spot was called, was the home of Drs Edward and Edith McCrae who lived there with their two children and a maid. It was, in fact a large house and stood in around 4 acres of land. Both Edward and Edith were eminent surgeons, with Practices in Manchester and they acted as Consultants at local hospitals. Edward also lectured at Manchester University. He was an outstanding tennis player of international quality.
The McCraes Headstone at St. Marks, Worsley
Churchyard, their grave marked by a headstone. The site of their former home is now a retirement complex in pleasant gardens. The orchard, the copper beech tree and its tortured branches, a testament to the explosive blast, are also gone.
...and again on that terrible night On Gilda Brook Road in Eccles, near the former “White Horse” pub (now Sainsburys), stood a large house that was acting as the HQ for a First Aid Station and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) base. A Christmas party there was closing abruptly on the sounding of the air raid sirens and all were rushing to be on duty, when suddenly a large bomb struck the road outside the house. The effect was catastrophic. Eleven people lost their lives on the spot including nurses, ambulance personnel and ARP Wardens. A further 30 people were treated for injuries and shock. In all, in the Eccles/Barton/Monton/Winton and Worsley areas, more than 1,400 homes were destroyed and many died or were injured over the course of the War.
On the night of December 22nd, when the McCraes had planned a pre-Christmas party, a stray bomber which perhaps had been driven off-course by defensive action, released a “land-mine” (a very large bomb suspended from a parachute), over Worsley. It floated to earth and though largely surrounded by fields and woodland and its own extensive grounds, the Cottage, fatefully sustained a direct hit and all within died instantly.
My final memory of those times was in 1947, when a convoy of lorries arrived on Cranbrook Road in Winton and a large number of men disembarked. They were German prisoners of war and had come to excavate an unexploded bomb from the field behind Kingswood Road on the Westwood Park Estate. The bomb was de-fused and the men duly dug it up. They were kept well supplied with tea, sandwiches and cigarettes by the local populace in an atmosphere of harmony...
The family now rest in peace in St. Marks

The Plotters: Summer Progress Tindall Street: The sun was smiling on us earlier this year and the crops were showing their appreciation of the fine days, but the English weather returned and then it turned Mediterranean...what a jumble! Some crops have been fantastic whilst others have failed, what’s new!!? We have 2 new sheds, thanks to an IGas grant and 2 more have been re-roofed. We are now wind and watertight and the volunteers on the Macmillan plot are here showing off one of the sheds. Mossfield Allotments, Swinton: The wet weather which came in May/June caused some flooding, so steps are being taken to lower the water-table. Hopefully this will soon be remedied and in the mean-time, the committee is still on the look-out for a shipping container
to store tools and equipment. Any offers or even hints where they may find one, to the SAF secretary at Carolyn.Collins@me.com. Don’t forget, if you would like to register for a plot at Mossfield, or any of the other 26 sites which the Council owns, then please contact the SAF secretary as above. Blackleach: The allotments are in the process of being prepared for improvement. This work will involve increasing the number of plots, improvements to access and new fencing, not all at one time but, if you are interested in a plot and would like to be part of the planning and implementation then please email the secretary Carolyn.Collins@me.com.
