Welcome to the third issue of On Our Doorstep magazine. Spring has sprung since the last issue! The daffodils and crocuses are popping out, the sun has been shining and we have been able to leave the coats at home on some days! Fingers crossed we will have a beautiful Easter and can make the most of all the Easter Egg and Bunny hunts. Our What’s On guide lists plenty of other outdoor activities you can take part in. Plus, this month we are launching the 2010 programme of Worsley Heritage Walks & Canal Cruises. We have two fantastic competitions to win delicious handcrafted cupcakes and tickets to The Baby Show at the Birmingham NEC in May. Special features include great training tips in the lead up to charity-run season, some sound dieting advice, an article about mums setting up business and more fascinating Worsley history. In Our Community
Worsley Methodist Church - The Hidden Gem Worsley possess a “hidden gem” which is planning to be approachable to the community. Worsley Methodist Church was founded in 1784 in the home of Mr. Burgess, the local miller. Services later moved to the Corn Photograph taken by Nick Harrison Mill at the bottom of Mill Brow before a chapel was opened on Barton Road in 1801. It has remained in the same spot ever since and is the oldest Methodist Church in the area. Many famous people have occupied the pulpit including Jabez Bunting, the Methodist leader who followed from John Wesley, and Elizabeth Fry. Two members have become Lord Mayors: one of Manchester and one of Liverpool. The interior of the chapel retains its original charm, which is not evident from the plain and dour exterior. As you enter the main doors you enter an oasis of tranquillity and beauty. The chapel is dominated by a large polished wooden pulpit, standing high at the front. The acoustics are excellent and much superior to modern buildings. Around the whole interior is a balcony, which was initially erected in 1821. This creates a cosy, warm atmosphere. Other features are the original pitch-pine pews, which still contain the gold numbers which were used when pews were rented. Behind the pulpit is the old organ which was built in 1871 and still has the lever attached which was used to provide the wind. There is a carved War Memorial, ornamental Cradle Rolls and even a stamp on the ceiling! The church is not standing still and values its community links. It is strongly involved in the Worsley Festival and supports other village activities. A flourishing Friendship Group is held every month and this success has led to two new community activities: Kurling and Tea Dances. All are welcome. Also, why not visit the historic chapel for a Sunday Service each Sunday at 10.30am. You will be made very welcome. Next meetings are:th th l Friendship Group - Wed 14 April & 12 May, 10-12pm th st th th l Kurling - Wed 7 & 21 April, 5 & 19 May, 1.30-4pm th th l Tea Dances - Tue 27 April & 25 May, 2-4pm For further details contact Charles Ogden 0161 7902125 4 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Why low GI foods aid weight loss The “GI Diet” seems to be the latest fad, replacing Atkins, The Zone and the South Beach Diet. But is it a “fad” or is it based on sound nutritional science? WHAT IS GI? GI stands for Glycemic Index and measures the rate at which the body breaks down the sugars in carbohydrates and then absorbs that sugar into the bloodstream. The concept was originally developed to help diabetics control their blood sugar levels, but was also discovered to benefit weight loss and cholesterol levels. It is therefore, a proven, healthy-eating based approach and far from a “fad”. CARBOHYDRATES - GOOD OR BAD? The popularity of high-protein diets like Atkins, has given “carbs” a bad name. This is unfortunate because they are essential to a balanced diet, providing a ready source of fuel for all the body's functions and the only source that the brain can utilise. However, not all carbohydrates are created equal. They range in type from simple sugars like glucose and fructose (fruit sugar), through starchy carbs like rice, bread and potatoes, to fibre, which can't be digested but has an important cleansing function. They also vary in GI rating:l Food with a high GI rating will cause blood sugar (glucose) levels to rise quickly and fall quickly causing energy spikes, followed by hunger cravings and lethargy. 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Low GI foods however, release their sugar into the bloodstream much more slowly. Hunger pangs are kept at bay for longer and energy levels stay at a much steadier level. Eating low GI foods will ultimately set you up for success towards your weight loss goals. l
WHICH FOODS HAVE HIGH OR LOW GI? GI ratings can be surprising - white rice has a high rating (so now you know why you can feel full after a Chinese meal and then hungry again an hour later!), as have cornflakes. Other high GI foods, like doughnuts and cakes are more obvious. Some fruits are high - dates and melons, while others - the orchard fruits, citrus and berries - are low. It's easy enough to find a pocket GI book or to check online. Here are a few more examples:High GI - Branflakes, Weetabix, white bread, french fries, parsnips, watermelon. Low GI - porridge, muesli, beans & lentils, pasta, milk, yoghurt, peas, carrots, nuts & raisins .
Team low GI foods up with lean protein and small amounts of healthy fats and watch the pounds melt away effortlessly! Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express on the Swinton/Worsley border

The Rising Trend of Mumpreneurs Mumpreneurs are a growing force in the UK economy. Mothers are increasingly fed up with jobs that don’t allow them to spend enough time with their children. So instead, they are starting their own businesses. THE KEY DRIVERS Most parents know, it isn't easy finding jobs that fit in with family life. Part time jobs are rare and flexible working is often not that “flexible”. For professional women, it is extremely rare to find either, and as a result many are forced to take career breaks or move down the career ladder to spend more time with their family. This is seldom a satisfying solution, so many mums are choosing to set up their own business.
FAMOUS MUMPRENEURS Baby Loves Disco is a well-known Manchester-based business which was started at home. Naomi Timperly, mum of 2, brought BLD over from the States in 2007. She discovered it when scanning the internet for kids activities. The first event was launched in 2008 and has now branched out to seven cities across Britain. Other famous companies set up from home include Babylicious and The White Company.
A recent BT survey showed that one in ten mums aspire to have their own business and nearly 15% had already started their own business. The three most popular reasons for wanting to set up a business were; more flexible hours, achieving a better balance between work and family life and being their own boss.
THE CHALLENGES OF SETTING UP AT HOME Juggling a new business, children, the house and the rest of your life isn’t easy. The distinction between these different facets become very blurred. Keeping up with all of them is impossible and it feels like you aren't doing any very well, especially if you are a sleep deprived mum. At least when you are employed by someone else you can drop the kids off, concentrate on work during the day, perhaps do personal admin in your lunch break, then come home, tend to the children and tackle housework.
TOP BUSINESSES FOR MUMS So what businesses are mums are setting up? The range is wide - mums either build on their skills and experience as parents, set up alone in their existing profession, retrain or just adapt their skills to build an entirely new business. Research by Yellow Pages found the most popular businesses being started at home as:l l l
l
Childminding Providing Baby Goods & Services Freelancing/Consultancy based businesses Marketing & Advertising, Accounting & Book Keeping, Graphic Designing, Internet Web Design, Tutoring, Party Planning and Wedding Organisers Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Mobile Hairdressing.

Working for yourself and having flexible hours gives you more time for the children but can also mean frequently working late into the night. So where to do you find time for housework? To keep on top of the basics you will need to set specific time aside, as being at home doesn't automatically mean it will be easier to find the time to do it.
41565 ContentAprMay_Layout 1 25/03/2010 10:06 Page 21
Other challenges include school holidays and when the children are ill. Unless you have great family support, work may have to be temporarily suspended. It’s particularly hard if your children are very young and need your undivided attention. They have little sympathy for you trying to make calls or send emails. It becomes a sport for them to race you to the phone and roar “HELLO” down the receiver and then they will do anything to keep your attention!
l
Surveys have found other major problems faced by Mumpreneurs include struggling to make quality time for their partner and enjoying any “me-time”.
Most importantly you have more quality time with your children without the added stress created by trying to get to the office in time and tackling the rush hour traffic every day. You can be there for your children when they are ill and have fun during the holidays. They grow up fast and its important not to miss out. You don't have to be there 24/7 for them but it is good to have some choice.
It gets easier to manage these things with time, especially with a supportive partner. There is plenty of advice available - books and websites written specifically for mums in business. A FEW HELPFUL TIPS l Learn to separate family and work time. Not doing so leads to added stress. Allow yourself a night off or restrict your working times. You need to switch off and spend time with your partner. l Seek help from friends or family for support or business advice. There are plenty of organisations offering business guidance too. l Be realistic about what you can achieve and allow some flexibility in your schedule for uncontrollable events such as your kids being ill. Remember you are doing several roles, and not just working. l Set yourself up for success by setting out smaller targets that will get you on the next rung of the ladder towards your ultimate goal.
l
Write down your joblist for the next day before you go to bed. Your brain processes it overnight and studies have shown you work more effectively the next day. Try not to worry about the things you don't do. Remember what you have done.
IS IT WORTH IT? Setting up and running your own business will give you a huge sense of satisfaction. You will meet interesting people along the way and learn about things you never would have touched on before. You are your own boss, responsible for your own destiny and can see a direct result of what you are doing. Most Mumpreneurs are earning the same, if not more, than they were prior to having children.

How to... launch a graphics design business
Local mum Michelle tells us how Colourwheel Creative was born I was constantly looking at the cost of personalised invitations and cards, and thinking “I can do that” – and for a lot less than the sites I had researched; and as a qualified graphic designer I was producing leaflets and flyers on day-to-day-basis for business, and knew the industry inside out… why wasn’t I doing this for myself? Suddenly I turned a corner in my life, when my daughter started school I was left with time on my hands… In a whirlwind of about 2 months I had contacted Citizens Advice about the best way of setting up a business and they put me in touch with Salford Hundred Venture. After an introductory session, a one-to-one and an Aspire course, Colourwheel Creative – my very own graphic design business venture was born! Aspire not only gave me the information on all areas of business that I needed, but gave me the support and confidence to believe that actually, yes, I can do this! I came joint second in the Aspire competition which gave me the finance to create a website which is a key tool to my business; along with the printing of some support literature. It’s countdown to the Bupa Great Manchester 10k run, and charity run season is looming! It’s time to step up your training plan. Not a day goes by when you don't pass ardent men and women pounding the leafy roads of Worsley & Roe Green. Year on year, many local residents avidly sign up and train for charity runs such as the Great Manchester run, or Cancer Research Race for Life events. Whether your challenge is a casual 5k jog or a more serious 10k race, here is some great training advice from Personal Fitness Trainer, Lisa Foley.
THE TRAINING PLAN Follow a well-rounded training program that incorporates speed, long runs, and adequate recovery. Firstly, start increasing your mileage. Once you have established your natural running pace, you can introduce some additional training methods to improve performance:Intervals - run fast paced laps with short rest periods. For example, on a 400m circuit complete 6-8 laps with 1 minute recovery between each. l Fartlek (speed play) - this incorporates bursts of speed ie. during a two-mile run, include a half mile jog, then double your speed for three minutes, jog a little more, then run hard for one minute, and repeat. l Hills - Find a hilly run and complete repetitions on inclines, with jogging or walking recoveries. l
Running... I do plenty of it! Training with clients means I run every day. I’m taking part in the Manchester 10k run again with 15 clients. Last year I finished 23rd female, after the elite runners! I am always encouraging clients to partake in events, and am also taking part with a large number of my clients in Manchester Urbanathlon (www.urbanathlon.co.uk) in July this year. Hopefully, I will be running the Berlin Marathon in September too!
26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Review training plans on Runners World or Cancer Research websites. However, use them as examples rather than rigid schedules. Be flexible and listen to your body.
MINIMISING OVER-TRAINING
AND INJURY
Adding speed workouts into an established regime can result in over-training and risk injury, so ensure the following:l l l l l l
Mileage increases do not exceed 10% a week Decrease mileage when increasing intensity Never increase mileage and intensity together Alternate easy training days with harder training days Use cross-training (different exercise) for relative rest on easy days Incorporate rest days
Footwear- don't be inclined to dust off your old trainers and start pounding the roads. Trainers are one aspect you should never scrimp on. Use reputable running shops where your running technique can be assessed and the correct footwear recommended for you.
41565 ContentAprMay_Layout 1 24/03/2010 14:33 Page 25
HELPFUL TIPS Aside from the actual training techniques, here are a few tips to increase your performance and motivation:Support - seek the support of a personal trainer who can guide you. Alternatively, join a running group or find a running buddy. This makes training much more fun and motivating. Practice - run the distance to know how your body responds and what your pace is. Practice it beforehand so there are no surprises. Preparation - increase your carbohydrate intake 2-3 days before the event; it ensures your glycogen stores are full and improves race performance. Get at least 8 hours sleep per night in the run-up to the event. Hydration - research shows that there is 10% decrease in performance and work capacity for every 1% loss of body fluids. So stay hydrated! Pacing - it's easy to get carried away with the crowd and find you burn out half way around the course. Take it steady. Charity - if it's not enough to run with thousands in one of Britain's most vibrant events then make it extra special by supporting a charity of your choice. For more training advice and list of events around the UK, take a look at:p www.bupa.co.uk/running p www.raceforlife.org/Health-and-training.aspx p www.runnersworld.co.uk p running.cancerresearchuk.org/events

A Look Into The Past
Dams, Floods and Goldfish... Old Warke Dam was built in the middle of the 19th Century as a private boating and fishing lake for the first Earl of Ellesmere. What events have passed here in our lifetime? We all know the Old Warke Dam in Worsley Woods, but how many today remember that once there were TWO dams? Way back in 1950 when I was a lad of ten, one of my favourite fishing spots was “the little dam”, which was situated directly beneath the retaining wall of the the Old Warke. Almost perfectly square and about 50m per side, it was a crystal clear pool that seethed with life. It swarmed with “Jacksharps” (local name for Sticklebacks), had a healthy population of newts and every form of water “bug” imaginable. Whilst the Jacksharps were the quarry of kid's nets, adult fishermen were after roach and perch and the greatest prize of all, a single giant goldfish. This latter celebrated inhabitant of the dam had evidently lived there for many years and feasted well on its abundant weed growth, to have attained a size more associated with present day Koi carp. It had grown to at least a foot in length. Every kind of bait must have been tried to capture it, but I never saw anyone succeed. If anyone did then they surely returned it to the water, for it remained there until disaster struck and the entire water body vanished forever. Exactly when and why this occurred I cannot say. From memory it must have been 1951 or 1952. Around the same time, an attempt was made to dredge the silt from the Old Warke Dam and this may have weakened the dam wall. Or perhaps it was a weakness in the wall itself which caused a partial breach. 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Whatever the circumstances, the result was to unleash a large portion of the retained water of the dam through the breach, down the steep slope of the embankment and into the little dam. It must have been something like a Tsunami and, of course, the pool beneath could not contain it. It overflowed in turn and, as its bed filled with the expelled silt from the Warke Dam, its own water joined the flood and poured into the woodland below its own small embankment. The liberated waters made their way to Worsley Brook - the spillway tunnel being bypassed - and dissipated under the cover of darkness. The evidence for the event was however, all too apparent the following days when I visited the area - and for several years after. Debris of the Flood
Though the Warke Dam embankment was swiftly repaired and strengthened, the scene beneath it was a wasteland. What once was a pristine pool had become a desert of stinking black silt, filling the former basin to the brim and level with the path into the woods. The flood had carried everything before it. All but the stoutest trees had been felled and covered by the silt. Drainage rivulets were blocked, creating the basis of the permanent swamp which is now the ecology of this area.
41565 ContentAprMay_Layout 1 25/03/2010 09:58 Page 31
The silt, abundant water and the rotted debris of the flood, created extravagant fertility and this wetland, which flanks Worsley Brook downstream of its tunnel outlet from the Old Warke Dam, is much prized by naturalists for its wealth of quite rare plants. The actual site of the lost pool soon grew a thicket of willows, bullrushes, mace, reeds and, eventually, small trees to colonise the black silt Site of the former dam expanse. However, to this day, it is still a saturated place that readily becomes mud.
Its outline can easily be traced from any of the three raised banks and its embankment walk still shows a line of stones marking the former shoreline. The goldfish and its other piscatorial friends? I like to think of them enjoying riding the surf of the flood and eventually settling to life in Worsley Brook further downstream, perhaps even reaching the Ship Canal and the Mersey. Written by John Kirwin Writers note: In the last issue the “Roman Wall” was referred to as possibly the remains of the “Granary”. Thanks to a knowledgeable reader I can confirm it is in fact the remains of the Lime Kilns, which adjoined the Granary.
