Welcome Spring is in the air! The evenings are getting lighter and it’s great for getting out and being more active. It almost feels like coming out of hibernation! This issue, Karen Pheasant, from Ladies Workout Express, tells us how to be more active as a family. Plus, with plenty of charity runs fast approaching - what more incentive do you need to get fit? In April/May, Salford is celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Bridgewater Canal. We have details of events to mark the occasion and a great article about Industrial Worsley. Take a look at the What’s On and Easter Holiday guide to find more activities to get involved in. Other features this edition include “Children’s Party Planning” - love it, or hate it, we have ideas to inspire you for the next party. Plus, don’t miss the “Day Out with Thomas” competition! Later this year we would like to run a feature on “Worsley, before the Motorway”. If you have an interesting story to tell, or photos before/during the motorway build, please get in touch.

Congratulations to Lawlors, who are the longest standing salon servicing Worsley and the surrounding areas. It is a salon focused on a friendly, professional service, on which their reputation has been built, and which will continue as they celebrate 20 years in the heart of Worsley village. This is something they are incredibly proud of and feel they can be compared favourably against salons in Manchester. Adrian, the owner of Lawlors, ran a salon in Manchester before bringing his expertise and extensive experience to Worsley. The business has flourished and they are now a team of seven.

A Spring in its Step... Worsley Property Update It’s been six months now since we reviewed the local property market with Fiona Beirne, Managing Director of Urban Bases. Have things improved? Any changes? Any hope?... “There’s always hope, and I’m delighted to report, since New Year a slight increase in confidence. Markets are all about confidence.” 2010... IS THE BLEAK PAST BEHIND US? 2011... HOW’S THE YEAR SO FAR? “As predicted, last year we saw prices fall up to 20% since the crash in November 2007. We saw fewer people moving, rentals increasing, and generally people feeling very ‘uneasy.’ The first quarter of 2011, we have definitely seen movement of old stock as vendors realise that the drop in the housing market is academic, if their property has lost value, so have all properties”.
Estate Agent ensures complete control of this process.” WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET YOUR HOUSE ON THE MARKET? “Historically, Spring has always been the favour within the housing market industry, with less seasonal movement when the Industry is in a boom/crash period. People relate to Spring as a fresh start, time to build a new nest, in a new location. BEST ADVICE FOR SELLERS THIS YEAR? “Use the expertise of your Estate Agent. Here at Urban Bases, we believe in delivering a great package. We assist on a whole range of services, be it a good solicitor to handle your conveyancy, a mortgage adviser to look after the financial aspects, or just a reliable plumber to sort a leaky tap!”
THE OUTLOOK FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR? “Well, judging by the results of the first quarter we can only hope the next quarter will have ‘A Spring in its Step’! People have resigned themselves, not only to changes in the housing market, but changes throughout all social structures; time to get on with life and be where you want to be”.
THE BOATYARD - POSITIVE START TO 2011 In February, it was reported in the MEN that Bardsley’s development have experienced £3m of sales so far this year. Graeme Spencer, Sales Director said: “We have had a very good start to the year and there is a really positive feeling around that we have not experienced for some time.”
HOW LONG CAN YOUB EXPECT HOUSES TO BE ON THE MARKET? “At Urban Bases we always tell our clients, the best turnaround from putting your property on the market to agreeing an acceptable offer is 6 weeks. From here, we move into conveyancy, and the mortgage offer process. Banks now want the blood of the first born before a mortgage may be approved. It can get protracted, but a good

Get Fit, Save Lives! Take part in the “largest women-only fundraising event in the UK” whilst helping to save lives and improving your fitness in the process. Established in 1994, Race for Life has attracted 5.4 million participants to date, raising over £362m for cancer research. Organised by Cancer Research UK and supported by Tesco, Race for Life comprises more than 300 events across the UK, bringing together women of all ages and fitness levels to raise money for cancer research by walking, jogging or running. If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be interested to learn that Lisa Foley Fitness, a female-led personal training company based in Manchester, is providing specialist training to women taking part in the Race for Life campaign – we have also promised to donate 20% of all profits from such training to Cancer Support UK. Although the team at Lisa Foley Fitness aims to equip women of all shapes and sizes, aged 30- 75 years, with the necessary skills and fitness to complete a 5K or 10K Race for Life event, the training is also intended to provide lasting health benefits – and a little fun along the way! The Race for Life campaign is designed to inspire women from all over the UK to take positive action against cancer – not just for their own health but also that of every other person in the country. Cancer causes thousands of deaths in the UK each year, which is why every penny spent on research is so valuable. Race for Life participants can take great pride in the knowledge that every step they take is helping to save lives.
14 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Unfortunately, statistics on cancers affecting women in the UK make for grim reading. In 2007, 45,695 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women, by far the most common cause of cancer in females (31% of all cancers). Lung and colorectal cancers are the second most common, causing more than 34,000 new cases a year. Other common ones are uterus, ovary, malignant melanoma, NHL, pancreas, kidney and leukaemia. Female mortality rates are highest for sufferers of lung, breast and colorectal cancers. Whilst aiming to raise money for research, the Race for Life campaign encourages women to take steps to prevent certain types of cancer. Research suggests that increased physical activity can reduce the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women by up to 80%, whilst obesity can increase the risk of breast, gallbladder cancer and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
So, if you want to get in shape, crank up your ‘Girl Power’ and help to beat cancer, Lisa Foley Fitness may be your ticket to a successful Race for Life event. Participants in the Manchester area can choose from several events in Heaton Park: a 10K run on Saturday 9th July 2011 and two 5K runs on Sunday 10th July 2011. Entry for each race is £14.99 per person. How to.... Plan a Children’s Birthday Party! Is it coming up to your child’s birthday and are you wondering what to do? Maybe this is your first party, or you want to try something different this year? Some parents love organising parties, for others it can seem a bit of a nightmare. Options may seem limited most of it has been done before, but remember, as long as the kids have a great time, that’s all that matters. Do you love organising and want to do it all yourself? Then you could have a party at home, or host your party at a local hall. If you prefer stress-free and minimal planning, then you can choose a venue which does it all for you. Whichever route, a party these days is likely to cost £200-300. The Basics The core desicions you will need to make when organising a party are:1) What type of party to have 2) Who to invite and how many 3) What the budget is 4) When to have it Research potential venues, or entertainers, early if you want to book a specific date. Make sure it’s appropriate for the kids' age and energy levels! Choose the one which best fits your criteria and the kids will enjoy the most.

1) PARTIES AT HOME For the mega organised...and brave! A traditional party at home is quite rare these days but great if you want something a little more personal. Choose a theme for your party and get decorations, food, prizes, games and party bags to follow the theme. Traditional games such as Musical Bumps/Statues, Treasure Hunts, Pass the Parcel, are still favourites. A tip: have extra activities planned to make sure you don’t run out of entertainment. If you have a summer birthday, always have back-up activities which you can do indoors in case of rain! If you are worried about entertaining, then hire someone else to do it - a magician, face painter, balloon modeller, clown. Search online for ideas and suppliers or ask friends for recommendations. Keep food simple - sandwiches, crisps, pizza, ice cream, fruit and juice always go down well. 2) HIRE A HALL This will cost a little more, but you can invite more children and the mess is not at your home! Try local church halls and community centres such as Beesley Green CC and Roe Green church hall. It will cost up to £20ph. You’ll need to provide your own music and games, or hire an entertainer, plus organise food and party bags. If you want a couple of recommendations try:wwwKidsDJ.co.uk (0161 702 0109) for a great disco with party games, or www.Loubylou.co.uk (01942 878127) - ”UK’s favourite female clown” providing captivating all round kids entertainment.

3) PARTY VENUES For the ultimate hassle-free option, choose a venue which specialises in parties and provides everything i.e. invitations, entertainment, food and party bags. Or choose a venue where the kids can enjoy an activity only, and choose your own location for food. Some options include:Chill Factore (Trafford Park), Legoland Discovery Centre (Trafford Centre), Build-a-Bear Workshop (Trafford Centre), East Lancashire Railway (Bury), Smithills Open Farm (Bolton), Gulliver’s World (Warrington), Pamper Parties at The Beauty Garden (Walkden). 4) SOFT PLAY A very popular choice especially for the younger ones. Everything included in a party - invitations, activity, food and sometimes party bags. Only thing you will need is the birthday cake. Parents can sit and have a coffee and watch their kids whilst they unleash their energy. Try:Brewers Fayre, Coach House (Trafford Centre), Little Monsters Mayhem (Irlam), Giddie Kippers (Walkden), Land of Play (Trafford Park). 6) DAY TRIPS If you don’t want a big party, then why not have a special day out with just a couple of close
friends or just family. A few ideas:Alton Towers (Staffordshire), Gullivers World (Warrington), Thomas Land & Drayton Manor Park (Staffordshire), Camelot Theme Park (Chorley), Blue Planet Aquarium (Ellesmere Port). 5) OLDER KIDS As your children grow up, your options expand to activties such as ice skating, swim parties, bowling, paintball, laserquest, karting, horse riding or seeing a show or a movie. TIPS FROM KIDS DJ, STEVE NEARY: Why not reduce the cost of a party by making it a joint event with a friend and their child. Feed children in the middle of the party to give them a big boost of energy for the second half. Check you have enough battery power on your camera and space on your memory card before leaving the house!

How fit is your family? Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express in Swinton, shares her advice on how to keep our children active and healthy.
As a parent you strive to provide your children with the best of everything. But too much of some good things can be a problem. We take for granted that kids are active, but today's busy lifestyles and school curriculi might not necessarily provide children with the physical activity that their growing bodies need.
As children age, provide activities with greater challenge. Hiking in local nature areas can be a great start. Start with timed hikes, gradually increase the duration and adjust the intensity by changing terrain or speed. Brisk walking will elevate the heart rate and provide a great cardio-respiratory workout. Older children can use step counters, which provide a tangible focus on mileage. No nature areas? Urban hiking in a city environment provides the same benefits and exposes your child to the wonderful diversity of your hometown.
60 MINUTES A DAY Your children should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Deciding to be an active family takes some deliberate actions. You must choose to incorporate physical activity into the family lifestyle early in childhood. As children get older, their participation in physical activity declines. It's best to start when children are young and make a commitment to physical activity every day!
“TAKE TEN Time is the main barrier to physical activity, and many families are challenged to achieve the 60 minutes of daily moderate physical activity recommended for children. Try to infuse small doses of physical activity into your family's daily lifestyle. One approach is to "take ten" - 10 minutes for a brisk walk, 10 crunches or push ups at a time, or 10 minutes of skipping. All of these little physical activity "snacks" can accumulate throughout the day and become an hour of activity that your child enjoys and that is necessary for good health.
START YOUNG With toddlers, encourage active play both indoors and outdoors. Turn daily chores into an activity adventure. Walking to the post box, pushing a wheelbarrow filled with weeds, and carrying the groceries are tasks that encourage activity as an integral part of daily living. When you model these healthy practices, your children will adopt the same habits. 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Create opportunities for lifestyle activity. Take active holidays, and explore your community physical activity venues together as a family. For example, visit the local climbing gym, inline skate or bike together the possibilities are endless!

Svelte Body

“After only 4 treatments I woke up and thought - Hey, where’s my tummy gone?” Helen, Sale - Happy Svelte Client
Svelte Body’s i-Lipo machine - “an intelligent alternative to Liposuction”....sounded intriguing so I had to try it. When I broke my ankle I went up from size 8-10 to a good size 12. Despite dieting and exercising after recovering, I still struggled to fit into my clothes. I had a bit of stubborn fat that would just not budge. I loved my clothes and couldn’t afford to buy new ones so had to get back into them. After just 6 treatments, I was well on my way. I now look better in my Body Con dress than ever before and don’t need my Suzanne & Trinny big pants!
are spent lying relaxed on a bed with the laserpads placed on the target area – for me, my tummy. You don’t feel a thing. Then you spend 30 minutes on the exercise bike to burn off the contents of the fat cells that have just been released from your chosen area. The therapists are lovely and the time goes so fast when you’re having a good natter with someone who understands exactly how you feel. At the gym I struggle to spend 10 minutes on one machine. Normally, when I lose weight it comes off my face and chest but never my tummy. With the i-Lipo you choose what area of your body you want to achieve the inch loss. If the cost puts you off trying it, then just think how much replacing your wardrobe would be. I was very sceptical of things like this before, but the proof is in the zip fastening and when that zip goes up, it is the best feeling in the world!
The treatment is non-invasive, pain & hassle free! Sessions last 50 minutes. The first 20 mins

TOP 5 STUDY TIPS With exams fast approaching Sandra shares her Top 5 Maths & English Study Tips:1. Daily practice of around 15 minutes. Working little and often is more effective than having longer study sessions 2. Correct any mistakes as soon as possible. 3. Aim for a target time to do your work so you can answer questions not just accurately, but quickly too. 4. Focus on your core skills to gain confidence at higher levels. 5. For older children, let your child study by themselves. Success in secondary school requires good study skills and the ability to work independently. The way your child works by themselves will determine the results they obtain. These are the skills that will ultimately make the difference between success and failure at any school exam.
Outdoor Our outdoor play areas have been redesigned and upgraded. All our children have access to purpose built garden play facilities with various learning resources.

Bridgewater B ridgew wat te er C Canal anal 1761-2011 1761 2011
2011 sees the 250th anniversary of the Bridgewater Canal opening in Salford, having been completed in 1761. It can be argued that the canal and Worsley Delph are the birthplace of the industrial revolution and the engineering and social innovations that happened all around the canal shaped the society that we live in today.
Tickets for the performance are FREE, available on a first come first served basis in limited numbers and must be booked in advance from Salford Tourist Information Centre on 0161 848 8601
To mark this momentous occasion in Salford’s history, there is a number of exciting events taking place both on and off the water throughout 2011 to celebrate the anniversary. This is your chance to help mark your canal’s place in history as well as having a great family day out and supporting your local community.
The programme kicks off with a specially commissioned play, Hell and High Water by Mikron Theatre Company on Thursday 28 April, which takes us back to 1761 when three men had a vision and hundreds of others toiled to make it a reality. Over rivers, under rock, through “Hell and High Water”, they proved that determination can literally move mountains. There will be two opportunities to catch the show with performances at 2.00pm and 7.30pm. The show is suitable for children aged eight and over, so get out your picnic rugs and celebrate with the whole family. For more information on Mikron visit their website at www.mikron.org.uk

Worsley Green: a birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
Late 1700’s to 1903: Duke of Bridgwater’s factory at “Worsley Yard” - now Worsley Green
Today: Worsley Green & Monument to Francis Egerton “The Canal Duke”
Worsley Green - a gentle sweep of grass, speckled in Spring by daffodils and crocuses, graced by mature trees and bounded by what appear to be ancient Tudor houses. It seems the epitome of an English village green, but Worsley Green actually stands as testimony to probably the very first example of what today we call “Regeneration” and, without doubt, it is a brilliant success. Who would believe that this site “Worsley Yard”, was once a hive of industry - a noisy heaving scene of frenetic activity, wreathed in coal black smoke and steam, inhabited by toiling workers of many skills, ruled by a clock that struck 13 (signifying 1pm to ensure workers returned from lunch on time)? But this was indeed the case, from the late 18th century, for almost 150 years. As the Duke of Bridgewater’s new canal took shape, and cheaply transported coal from his mines in the Delph provided the energy to fuel the Industrial Revolution in Manchester, so Worsley Yard came into being. An initial step may have been to culvert Worsley Brook, which powered the former Mill which had produced flour since 1420. It still flows deep beneath the Green and the canal - a surface sluice control being a clue to its continuing presence. A Timber Yard was installed, wheelwrights and basket makers plied their crafts, three huge dry docks were built for canal boat construction and maintenance, a “Motor Mill” and warehouse, metalworkers and furnaces… This was probably one of the first “industrial estates” in the world! Presiding over all this activity was one of the first symbols of the dark days of industrialisation - a towering chimney, belching smoke. 46 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Dry Docks built by the Duke, still in use today
Francis Egerton (1736-1803), 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, was well ahead of his time and, although well-commemorated in this area, gets too little credit on the national stage. His monument stands on the Green to this day and fittingly it was the base of his factory chimney, transformed into a fountain, now sadly dry. When all industrial activity ceased and the Yard was cleared for the present housing in 1903, the Duke’s distant descendant the Earl of Ellesmere, as part of his “beautification” of the area, caused an inscription to be engraved in Latin on the monument. It reads (thanks to a translation by Henry Hart-Davies): A lofty column breathing smoke and fire Did I the builder’s glory once aspire Whose founder was that Duke who far and wide Bridged water through Bridgewater’s countryside Stranger! This spot where, where never once did cease Great Vulcan’s year, would sleep in silent peace But beneath my very stones does mount That water’s source, his honour’s spring and fount Alas! That I who gazed o’er field and town Should to these base proportions dwindle down But all’s not over, still enough remains To testify past glories, duties, pain.
Next time you walk the dog on the Green look at the contours of the ground. Enigmatic dips… a hint of a terrace…could those grassy lines be where rail tracks once ran? For a real experience of the magnitude of the industry that once existed, take a stroll behind the houses on the Green (pictured above) to the dry docks, built by the Duke. Not only do they still exist, they are thriving as a canal boat maintenance business to this day - 250 years on! Written by John Kirwin
