Welcome

Contents

It’s hard to believe it’s Easter already, but I am really looking forward to diving into a chocolate egg after giving it up for Lent!

4

If you love chocolate, there are plenty of Egg Hunts taking place over the Easter Weekend. Take a look at our extended Easter Activities feature for a host of other local activities for children this holiday. Read our special Ordsall Hall feature. I would recommend a visit. It’s great for children interactive, just the right size to hold their interest plus outdoor space for little ones to release some energy and even take a picnic! Charity Run season is approaching. If you fancy tackling a small run for a great cause, enter a Race for Life event and join the fight against Cancer. Ladies Workout Express gives us a training plan for total running newbies. Special thanks for our fantastic Easter cover shot to local photographer Zenna Barry, Eggs for Education for the loan of their chick and to Sally and Ben for the loan of their son Adam! To see more of Zenna’s work visit www.zen-photographic.co.uk.

ST MARK’S JUBILEE CONCERT 9TH JUNE 2012 On Saturday 9th June 2012, there will be a Grand Concert at the Parish Church of St. Mark, Worsley, to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The programme will include music by the Organist and Director of Music, Jeff Ramsdale, the Church Choir and Friends, and the Ellenbrook and Boothstown Brass Band. The theme of the concert is Empire and Majesty and it will include music that will reflect these two notions. Pieces played on the Organ will include Walton’s Crown Imperial, Widor’s Toccata no.5 and a selection from Water Music by Handel. The Choir will sing, amongst others, Zadok the Priest, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

The Brass Band will bring a lively atmosphere to the evening and will include Pomp and Circumstance no.1, Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Men of Harlech. There will also be some audience participation! In addition to celebrating this significant occasion, the evening’s event will aim to raise funds for the benefit of the Church. As a Grade II listed building, it requires a lot of upkeep. The Church is a well-known feature of the area due to its commanding position and is a popular landmark. Entrance by ticket only. Tickets: £6 Adult, £4 under 16s. Admission includes refreshments. For more information, or to book, call Paul 0774 646 7879 or Alan 0161 789 4420

THE ROYALOAK Bringing back a traditional village local to Boothstown

The Royal Oak finally re-opens after being transformed back into the more traditional village pub it once would have been.

Sunday's homecooked lunch is another new addition. Available from 12.30 to 3.30pm, for every fully paying adult a child can eat free.

With its roaring open fires, wooden beams and cosy style decor, it’s a warm and welcoming pub for anyone to visit, enjoy and relax. There is now live music every Saturday night along with a mouth-watering bar menu. Plus, various themed events are planned throughout the year, kicking off with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April. In May, we will be hosting a Help the Heroes charity night. On Saturdays and Sundays, enjoy a hearty breakfast from 7am to 11am whilst reading the weekend papers. You can even bring the dog into the snug bar if you are on your way back from an early morning walk!

n! now ope

Thursdays hosts an over 55's Golden Years Lunch Club (12-2pm), offering 2 courses for £3.95 or 3 courses for £4.95, with an after-lunch sing-song around the piano in the lounge bar. Soon to be available is a wide selection of Cask Ales along with an extensive Scotch and Wine list....and it doesn’t stop there! A new front and rear patio gardens plus comfortable B&B accommodation will be open in the near future too. As new owners, we hope you will pop in and see we are working hard to bring back a really traditional village local for everyone. For more info call Keith or Yvonne 0161 211 6583

Community News Raising Funds to Fight the Monton Incinerator Jan Phelan, “SAY NO” campaigner, calls for fundraising help and community involvement Outside play area with children’s playground

Monton Village School

Proposed Incinerator Site

New Park High School

Last summer, campaigners and Salford Council unanimously rejected the controversial plans for an incinerator on a former industrial site in Monton. However, the developer has appealed that decision and we are now preparing for a Planning Inspectorate Inquiry to be held from May 9th at Monton House Hotel, Monton. The outcome is of paramount importance to this area.

Join the Worsley Townswomen’s Guild

If the plans for the waste plant go ahead we would face:• EMISSIONS - dispersed over a 10 mile radius in an area that already has a high incidence of respiratory health related problems. • HGV LORRIES - an extra 1,000 per week travelling from the M60 and the East Lancs and will be taking away toxic waste. • ODOUR - the anaerobic digester will be burning food waste; this process is always associated with pungent odour despite claims by the operators to the contrary. There are ambitious plans to develop the Bridgewater Canal from Worsley to Eccles as a heritage/tourist attraction which will attract inward investment and improve this area socially and economically. This would be seriously compromised if the waste plant is built. Please support your local community. We are fundraising now to pay for legal advice so that our arguments can be as effective as possible. For more information go to www.greenlaneecodump.org

MANCHESTER WOMEN URGED TO JOIN THE FIGHT BY ENTERING RACE FOR LIFE 2012 MANCHESTER women are being urged to join the fight against all cancers by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Women and girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are needed to join forces for the events which will take place across the North West, including at Heaton Park Manchester on 21st and 22nd July. Katherine Culshaw, Cancer Research UK’s North West Events Manager, said: “Come on ladies – please enter Race for Life in Manchester today! It’s all of us versus cancer and we need you to join the fight as soon as possible.” Katherine continued: “We know many women want to take part in Race for Life but are worried they won’t be able to

20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

complete the course. We want to reassure them that Race for Life is not about being fast or fit. Instead, it’s a celebration of sisterhood and hope”. “Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. The really startling fact is that in the same period of time, around four people in the North West will be diagnosed with cancer.” Thanks to research into cancer, hundreds of thousands of lives have already been saved. With help from the people of Manchester, Cancer Research UK intends to save many more. To join Manchester against cancer, enter Race for Life at www.raceforlife.org or call 0871 641 1111.

Selling tips: Getting the price you want for your car Rick Tsang from Chips Away shares his top tips for a successful car sale. You've loved it, taken care of it, serviced it religiously and cleaned it come rain or shine. Now it's time to sell your car. So what should you do to get the best price? Getting your car ready for sale is essential. Clean the car inside and out and make sure it's tidy. It's also worth getting a new MOT as this says a lot about the car's basic condition. Consider a full, professional valet service. It can really make a difference to the price and how easily you can sell the car. Repair any minor paintwork damage or simple mechanical faults too. Now you're ready to market your car, so here are some tips for a stress-free sale.

1. Price your car realistically This is vital if you want a quick sale. Check the prices of similar cars in popular classified ad magazines or online.

2. In adverts, stick to the relevant facts Describe the car as accurately as possible. Quote the year/number plate, how many months are left on the MOT and where you are based.

5. Check the buyer is insured to test drive the car Your own insurance may cover you. Always go with them and avoid becoming a victim of car theft – if you change seats part way through, take the keys with you and hand them over when you get back in the car.

6. Build in a margin for haggling That way the buyer's happy and you still get close to the amount you want.

7. Provide a 'Sold as seen, tried and approved without guarantee' receipt. Note, no wording on the receipt is foolproof.

8. Get paid! Cash is always the best way to be paid. If you are given a personal or building society cheque, wait for it to clear in your bank before you hand the car over. Finally, don’t forget to tell the DVLA that your car has changed hands. You don't want to be landed with the new driver's future offences or convictions. Simply follow the instructions on the V5/registration document.

3. State the car’s condition Say if it's being sold for spares only, or it requires substantial repairs, and include this on the receipt once you've agreed to sell.

4. Have all documents and history handy Keep receipts for work carried out. Have all MOT certificates and service records to hand. A fully-stamped dealer service record adds value and don't forget to hand over all relevant documents when you sell! 28 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Diary of a Born-Again Runner by Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express, Swinton

I was always a fairly keen runner. First at school, then at the gym and finally on the roads. I did a couple of Great Manchester 10Ks and ran 2-3 times a week. Then I started to get pains in my legs that seemed to be exacerbated by the running, and was diagnosed with early osteoarthritis in my lower spine. I resigned myself to the fact that my running days were over. Some 18 months later I was seeing the wonderful physio, Vickie Cork at the gym I own and happened to mention my back problem and how much I missed running. She assessed my posture, showed me some exercises to do and suggested I start some gentle running. I am now back running with a vengeance! I started with a Race for Life at Heaton Park last summer along with some of the ladies from the gym and got the bug again. Since then, I have run numerous 5K and 10K races and am now looking forward to a couple of 10 milers in the next month. I’m not fast,

but I really enjoy it. And my back barely troubles me now. I’m not alone. Talk to anyone who runs regularly and they’ll tell a similar story. How it destresses them, beats depression, boosts energy and burns off the pounds. At the beginning of January, we started an absolute beginners’ running club at the gym with the aim of being able to run the Great Manchester 10K in May. We began very gently – alternating one minute of slow jogging with three minutes of brisk walking, for sixteen minutes three times a week. Initially apprehensive, everyone was surprised how easy it was and felt the now familiar “runners’ high”. If you want to give it a go, the key is to start slowly, and to build up gently. Try following the 10 week beginners’ running plan below. There really is no need to push yourself to the point of exhaustion, which can be dispiriting and risks injury. Instead, take it at a pace that allows you to enjoy the experience so that you will really look forward to getting those running shoes on again!

i-Lipo : The intelligent alternative to liposuction i-Lipo™ is the latest in laser lipolysis, offering you a way to achieve inch loss and body contouring with no pain, no needles and no down time. How does it work? The i-lipo uses a low level of visible red laser light to stimulate the body's natural processes that empty the stored fat contents inside fat cells. The laser energy creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, temporarily opening pores in the cell wall through which the fat contents can escape. The contents are then transported around the body to the tissues that will use them during metabolism to create energy. Thus i-Lipo is not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. This metabolism of the contents permanently removes them from the body leaving smaller fat cells and giving you inch loss.

i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men and women.

What Svelte Body clients say.... Ann from Worsley - Oct 2011:I lost several inches on my first session which amazed me from such a simple, fuss free and painless procedure. After 8 sessions I lost the equivalent of a dress size around my stomach area. Free use of the power plate was an added bonus & helped tone the rest of my body. In just 4 weeks I feel more comfortable in my bikini & its given me the incentive I need to keep on exercising. The therapists were always friendly, accommodating & flexible on timing of appointments.

From Louise - Boothstown - Oct 2011:I had been fed up with my hip & thigh area for as long as I can remember. Size 8-10 in clothing, I doubted that i-lipo would have any effect. After 5 sessions the results began to show & my clothes proved it. The appearance of the area treated also improved - Amazing ! Over the 8 sessions I managed to treat both areas & lost a total of 11 inches. My clothes feel so much better & I am feeling much more confident wearing them. I am really pleased with the results & would recommend you give it a try. After all, if there is an answer why suffer !

Brought back to life! Following a major restoration programme, Ordsall Hall, Salford’s “hidden gem”, re-opened to the public in May 2011. The Hall has been owned by the City of Salford since 1959 and Salford City Council, along with Salford Community Leisure has driven the regeneration project with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is has been a very busy time since we re-opened and we have welcomed nearly 30,000 visitors through the doors. Ordsall Hall was first recorded in 1210 and is a remarkable survivor! Since being built it has had many uses. It has been home to medieval gentry, Tudor nobility, butchers, farmers, an Earl, an artist, priests, scout troops, mill workers, cows and several ghosts! When built it would have been surrounded by fields and farmland – a bit different from the view from here today! The existing building dates back to the 1360s. This makes it one of Greater Manchester’s oldest buildings. It was initially built by the Radclyffe family who were an influential and important local family with close links to the monarchy. It is said that Margaret Radclyffe (who died in 1599) was a lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth I. The £6.5million restoration has brought the building and the grounds back to life. From the highly decorative Great Hall through to the Star Chamber in the oldest wing of the house, you can unearth the story of the Hall and soak up the atmosphere in historically re-created room settings. Discover what was cooked in a Tudor kitchen and get the low-down on the people who lived there at informative and hands-on family friendly events such as our Tudor Lives afternoon on the 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP

first Sunday of every month and our programme of events for the school holidays. Our changing exhibitions feature subjects such as wedding traditions to Tudor sports. Complete your visit with a wander through the beautifully landscaped gardens, and relax with refreshments in the new cafe area. The Hall even has its own ghosts! The most famous is the White Lady; she is seen walking around the Great Hall, Star Chamber and grounds holding a candle. We have three webcams set up so ghost hunters can log on to try to catch a glimpse of the ghosts that live here. The White Lady also regularly tweets about the comings and goings at the Hall – follow her @theOrdsallGhost. We offer a number of school sessions for Key Stages 1,2, 3 and 4. We also welcome groups and can offer guided tours. The Hall is supported by a large number of volunteers – so if you are looking to gain experience, learn new skills, or simply make new friends, you will find a warm welcome at Ordsall Hall. Amir Khan Opens Salford City College Boxing Gym World Boxing Champion, Amir Khan, was the guest of honour at the grand opening of Salford City College’s Walkden Sixth Form Centre Boxing Gym in March 2012. Khan has a strong affiliation with Salford City College after working in partnership together for two and a half years. In the past, the college has utilised the facilities at Amir Khan’s Bolton-based boxing gym, Gloves Community Centre to teach college students sports lessons and enrichment. This partnership has led to Amir and Gloves generously donating an entire suite of top of the range boxing equipment to Walkden Sixth Form Centre, to be used in their on-site boxing gym. Khan said; “I’m extremely proud to have helped to develop the boxing gym here at Salford City College, and to be able to provide opportunities for students and members of the wider community to get involved in the 44 ON OUR DOORSTEP

sport. It’s a brilliant gym, with great facilities, I’m really happy we could be involved in this project.” Amir also commented on what a brilliant achievement it is for Salford City College to have their own boxing gym facilities. Phil Arbelo-Dolan, Sports Development Manager at Salford City College thanked Amir and Gloves Community Centre for their generous donation; “Without the help and support Salford City College has received from Amir and the team down at Gloves, us having our own boxing gym would be merely a pipe dream. We are extremely grateful for their generous donation and hope to continue our partnership going forwards. Having our own boxing facilities at Walkden Sixth Form Centre enables us to educate students and community members about boxing, giving them the opportunity to learn about the sport whilst using excellent facilities.”
