Singing with Dementia in Salford Improving quality of life for dementia sufferers

It's easy to feel isolated and alone if you or a family member has dementia, but keeping in contact with other people is good for people with dementia because it helps to keep them active and stimulated. Singing groups offer people with dementia, and their carers, a chance to socialise and sing with other people in the same situation, plus gives them something fun to do together. Our Group... If you are a Carer of a person suffering with Dementia, then you would both be warmly welcomed to our Group where we use music as a therapeutic tool. It acts as a stimulator of the brain, and also as a communication tool. We sing songs of yesteryear, which revive hidden

4 ON OUR DOORSTEP

memories enabling people who do not normally communicate to sing all the words of songs which are recalled by the memory of a tune or a long forgotten incident. They also enjoy the rhythm and sounds. Many sway to the music or even get up to dance a few steps. We meet every Wednesday at Humphrey Booth Centre, 16 Worsley Road, Swinton. Coffee is served from 10.30am, and singing starts at 11.00am. Everything is free. No referral is needed and being able to sing is NOT a requirement. Carers gain support, from friendships, and enjoy the songs Many resources, leaflets and help are available. All can be borrowed free of charge. Music for Dementia is a great solace. It calms, it revives memories and it touches the soul. IT IS AN EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED! Georgia’s Children of the World On Sunday May 5th “Georgia’s Children of the World” will host its 3rd GFESTIVAL at Ellesmere Sports Club to support some of the poorest children in the world through www.choicecambodia.org. Set up in memory of Georgia Murray a former pupil and student of Broadoak and Bridgewater Schools and Pendleton College. An amazing young woman with an incredible enthusiasm for life who cared deeply for others, who tragically died following complications in her 3rd open heart operation in November 2010. Last year almost 1,000 people attended GFestival on the 4th June the day that would have been Georgia’s 21st birthday. We raised around £10,000 which goes directly to supporting CHOICE in Cambodia who take care of four extremely poor

villages, an hour away from Phnom Penh. These villagers live in shacks in far worse condition than the average garden shed in the UK, with no clean water, sanitation or electricity. Thanks to the support of Georgia’s Children & GFESTIVAL, CHOICE provide clean water on a daily basis; uniforms, books and transport to state school for 90 kids; kindergarten facilities for a further 50 children; English, sewing and computer studies for some of the older children; healthcare for all the villagers including four children with severe medical conditions. Please come along to GFESTIVAL and enjoy a day of Music Art Comedy and Sport and support some of the poorest children in the world. If you are a local business and can sponsor or donate prizes for the day, please email info@georgiaschidren.com Tickets available from www.georgiaschildren.com Follow Georgia’s Children on Facebook.

GETTING READY FOR PROM NIGHT Unheard of in Britain ten years ago, the Prom is now the highlight of the year for school-leavers. For girls, it’s all about the dress. Many will have started planning already, but if you haven’t, here are a few vital tips to help you on your way:-

B ridal E legance...

can help you create the perfect look for your special Proms event with their stunning selection of dresses, accessories and much more from leading designer houses. They are an exclusive stockist of Amanda Wyatt & Scarlett-Evening Prom Gowns in this area. Their policy to sell just one of each style of dress to each school gives you peace of mind that no-one will have the same dress! Here, Bridal Elegance feature some classic styles:-

n BUDGET: Agree one with your parents and stick to it. Don’t forget it’s not just the dress, but shoes, hair, makeup, nails, accessories and possibly more!

AMANDA WYATT A heavy chiffon gown, dramatic floor length with striking bead detailing along the cut out waist. Ideal for the more petite figure. SCARLETT-EVENING A beautiful one shouldered taffeta gown which comes in various colours. This gown supports very flattering ruching across the middle with a lace up back.

n INSPIRATION: Search online for ideas on dresses and total styling. There are plenty of Prom websites and articles to browse through. n GO SHOPPING: Visit a local Prom shop where you can have a personal fitting and they can find a dress which suits your body shape. Shops range from:Specialist Prom suppliers (The Dress Studio, Culcheth); Bridal Shops (Bridal Elegance Winton); and local boutiques (Le Boutique Walkden). n TIMING: Don’t leave choosing a dress to the last minute. Allow time for possible alterations. n ACCESSORIES:- Think ahead to how you can accessorise. At a minimum you will need shoes, handbag and jewellery. Opt for a style and colour that you can use again with other outfits. Local boutiques can help you with this too! n HAIR: As with the dress, do your research early and book an appointment in advance with your local salon, or choose one that will come to you! 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Swinton Park Golf Club Restaurant winton Park Golf Club is a spectacular golfing venue with a challenging and immaculate course to suit all abilities of players.

S

It has been kept fairly secret until now, but did you know that Swinton Park is also home to the intimate Claremont Restaurant? Set in the beautiful surroundings of the golf course and homely clubhouse - it is a perfect venue for a spot of local dining. You do not have to be a member to dine here, it’s open to all. The Claremont Restaurant is located in the clubhouse, a relaxed and well presented venue, with photographs of past captains and details of various competition winners on the walls. The atmosphere is comfortingly unpretentious and welcoming. Tables are elegantly laid out with crisp white linen and fresh flowers. Background music complements the environment and the service is warm but professional. The menu offers a good choice of modern British cuisine-style dishes, catering for meat and fish lovers and vegetarians. Steaks often features in the menu as this is an extremely popular choice. Then to finish off, there is a range of mouthwatering desserts to try. The majority of produce is sourced locally, supporting local trade. Seasonal dishes will include game such as pigeon, rabbit and pheasant, and seasonal fruit and vegetables. The menu is excellent value with 2 courses priced at £10.95, and 3 courses at £13.95 VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

My wife is a great cook and has previously worked as a chef at a professional level, therefore eating out is difficult for me as the high standards I receive at home is often hard to beat. I can honestly say this was one of the best evenings that we have enjoyed together with friends - the food, atmosphere and service were second to none. Plus, the price was an unexpected bargain for which we will return again soon.

...feedback from a local resident

The Claremont Restaurant is small and intimate, so it is essential to book. The menu changes weekly so you can visit time and time again and sample something new.

Wheels in Motion!

W

hat a year 2012 was for British Cycling. Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France and Team GB’s cyclists pretty much cleaned up in the Olympics 2012, claiming 12 medals out of total 65 medals won by British Olympians. It is not surprising that all of this success has led to more people taking to our nation’s roads by bike - whether it be riding to work; riding with family and friends for leisure or; riding an organised event. As the home of British Cycling, Manchester plans to be Britain’s No.1 City for cycling by 2017. Plans include bike hire schemes; free training for cyclists and; expanded cycle path networks. With the increase in journeys being made by bike, so comes the need for vehicle drivers and cyclists to share the roads and gain better respect for one another. Cyclists often become frustrated by drivers giving them little space whilst drivers regularly see cyclists ignore road signs and traffic lights. It is estimated by Manchester City Council that some 20,000 people in Manchester want to ride a bike but don’t. The Summer success of Olympic medals will certainly inspire us to clean up our bikes and take to the road but it is important that we do everything to stay safe. Nick Harrison, a solicitor Aequitas Legal in Salford, who commutes to work by bike and rides regularly at weekends comments “To me, there is no better way to stay fit and healthy than getting out on my bike. I love the freedom that cycling gives me although I am very aware of the hazards that face me as a cyclist.” Managing Partner of Aequitas Legal, Sucheet Amin says “Manchester is a great place to ride a bike. It doesn’t take long to get into the City or out into the countryside yet the number of cyclists involved in an accident is still too high considering the number of enquiries we receive asking for help, support and guidance. More can be done to protect cyclists by increasing dedicated cycle markings, awareness and training.” Aequitas Legal have a team of Solicitors who are first and foremost cyclists. Nick Harrison,

who represents a number of injured cyclists who have had an accident that wasn’t their fault, offers some safety tips for cyclists:n Never jump red lights! n. Be visible to drivers - use good lights in non-daylight hours as well as high visibility clothing n Use hand signals where appropriate – let drivers know early what you are about to do n Try and avoid riding on the inside of vehicles at traffic lights as they could be turning left and always avoid riding on the inside of large vehicles like vans and lorries n Wear a helmet – although it’s not compulsory and is your choice, it does offer some protection For more interesting cycle news and opinion, follow @AequitasCycle on Twitter.

YOUR GREEN SPACES UNDER THREAT by RAID Peel are hoping to develop land again in and around the Worsley area, with a combined total of over 3000 new houses being proposed. Now the community spirit of RAGE which stopped the racecourse in its tracks hands over the reins to RAID*. *Residents Against Inappropriate Developments

The Developer revealed proposals for a number of green field sites which include:• Greenleach Lane • Broadoak • Hazelhurst • Roe Green • Crossfield Drive • Walkden • Boothstown • Ellenbrook ... as well as Irlam and Cadishead.

This consultation ends on the 12th April 2013 and it is vital that you send in your nomination for all the threatened green field sites. Further details can be obtained from: www.salford.gov.uk/localplan-sitesconsultation

Local residents have already expressed their concerns about the impact on the local and wider communities. Services such as schools (which are already oversubscribed), roads and doctors’ surgeries will be affected. People are also worried about the impact on the quality of life, loss of amenity and the potential for further air pollution.

Take an active role by writing letters of objection concerning developments on all these green field sites to the Developers, the Council and the press. Be clear in your reasoning. Talk about the impact on the local community in terms of traffic congestion, air pollution, the strain on local services such as schools and healthcare, and the impact on the quality of life by the loss of local green spaces.

Whilst RAID is not opposed to the provision of new houses, it is opposed to developing local green spaces and urges the Council to follow the National guideline to use more appropriate brown field sites.

SO PLEASE get involved and stay informed by joining RAID and visit:-

www.raid-org.co.uk www.facebook.com/groups/raid/

HELP US FIGHT BACK Salford Council’s proposed housing figures were rejected by a Government Inspector. The Council is now forging ahead with a new “Local Plan”. This plan will enable our community to have a strong voice in determining what development takes place in our neighbourhoods. The consultation for this new Local Plan is currently taking place and you can nominate local green spaces which you feel need protection. 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Walkden today

Keeping Business Local ...Walkden Shopping locally is something we can all do to encourage the local economy and keep our communities going. This issue we focus on Walkden, which has a long history of having a hard working community. From 1296 the area of Walkden was used mainly for agriculture, with isolated groups or ‘folds’ of cottages. In 1768, the Duke of Bridgewater extended his estate and when the underground canal reached Walkden in 1770, Walkden was developed for mining purposes. Cotton Mills

were built alongside to provide jobs for miners wives and daughters. From the industrial revolution Walkden continued to grow from a collection of hamlets into a town. The arrival of the railways had tremendous impact, by the end of the 1880’s Walkden was surrounded by a network of both passenger and colliery lines. Retail trading developed through the 1860’s and 70’s to supply the needs of the rapidly expanding

town with Kentons and then the Co-op being the first of the general stores. Today Walkden is the largest town, in the area On Our Doorstep covers, and offers a diverse mixture of shops, restaurants and amenities. The latest developments being The Ellesmere Centre, where Tesco stands prominent and many other chain stores and food outlets are present such as Boots, JD Sports, Subway, Costa Coffee, plus an array of banks and building societies along with Walkden Post Office. Within the centre you will also find independent stores such as Adele’s Bag Heaven, Clouds gift shop and Winders Carpets. The Market Hall, originally started in the 1970’s, is now back after being closed for the past eight years. You’ll find stalls selling cards, crafts, sweets, groceries and even a Bridal Boutique. There are still market stalls available. Phase 3 of the Ellesmere Centre’s development is currently underway and due to open in the Autumn this year bringing an extra 13 retail park units. needs to the one-off special purchases:- home interiors, hair & beauty salons, dance/drama school, travel agents and venue dressers to name a few. Leading out, along Walkden Road, are various cafes and independent businesses such as accountants, solicitors, florists, flooring specialists and even a cruise centre. There are some hidden gems to be found here too. Walkden is home to Grenache, “The Best North West Restaurant” as awarded by The Good Food Guide and Hi-Life Diners Club in 2012. On the culinary side, there are more quality restaurants and take aways available to cater for all tastes and budgets. The Walkden Sixth Form Centre has recently opened a stateof-the-art restaurant training facility offering a fine dining experience at a fraction of the price. For further information on Walkden and what it has to offer, go to www.shoplocalwalkden.co.uk - a website set up by Councillor Iain Lindley to promote the independent businesses and make Walkden a thriving town centre once again. SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT Spring is here and you can finally start those home improvements you’ve been putting off all winter, but where to start? There are plenty of local businesses to offer help and advice.

Spring Cleaning The obvious starting point...a good old fashioned spring clean is a must. Do a thorough job - de-clutter first and then a top to bottom clean including blinds, windows and curtains. (Happy to help: Scrub Squad, Dreamstyle Cleaning, Worsley Cleaning)

External Painting & Maintenance Spring is an ideal time to get the outside of your home in order:• Revive the exterior by painting weather worn walls, windows and even the front door! (AJ Prady) • Check your Roofing and guttering for holes, leaks or broken tiles. • Plumbing - check for frost damage to pipes

Extensions and Renovations Upgrade your kitchen or bathroom, convert or extend your property and create that extra space you need. Do it whilst the weather is good.

Upgrading Your Bathroom Advice from Premier Bathrooms:The bathroom might be one of the smallest rooms in your house, but it’s probably one of the most used. What you need from your bathroom changes as your family grows and at different stages in life. So it may be the right time to consider renovating, renewing or creating a new bathroom by converting redundant space in your house. Plus a stylish, or additional bathroom will add value to your home. Determine your budget first and think about how your bathroom needs to function. For a quick uplift you can upgrade your fixtures, install a new sink and re-decorate. For a total revamp - change the suite, renew the tiles and radiators, perhaps install a shower unit. For ideas and inspiration, take time to look around at different styles, decor and layouts. Grab some Interiors magazines, bathroom catalogues and seek out your local bathroom specialist / fitter to give you advice, options and to help you plan.

Get Your Garden Into Shape

Save Energy in Your Conservatory

Green‘n’Tidy gives you some top jobs for April & May:-

advises T&J Conservatories:-

April:• Keep weeds under control • Tie in climbing and rambling roses • Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds • Start to feed citrus plants • Feed hungry shrubs and roses • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches • Start cutting your grass now to encourage new, healthier growth May:• Mow lawns weekly • Collect rainwater for irrigation • Hoe regularly between rows on hot days to ensure weeds dry up and die. • Trim hedges (check for nesting birds first) • Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs • Mulch around the base of your plants to help them to retain moisture around the roots • Keep pots and hanging baskets well watered using collected rainwater wherever possible • Plant out summer bedding at the end of May 46 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Are you losing heat from your Conservatory? With ever increasing energy prices you’d be wise to conserve heat by upgrading your Conservatory roof to an energy saving solar-controlled self cleaning roof which keeps the room warm in the winter and cooler in the summer as well as reducing your energy bills. Another option is the ‘Garden Room Roof’ which is covered with Envirotile, giving you the look of a traditional tiled roof, only using the latest sustainable materials, made from recyclable plastic. It is tough and durable, sound absorbing, heat retaining and has unique technical features and meets new building standards supporting the sustainable homes initiative. Either option would be viable for saving energy in your home. RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. 6

7

The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!

The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.

3

Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

4

Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with
