TRAINS, BOATS AND PLANES The Making of Manchester PART II: THE SHIP CANAL
January 1894. The opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, led by the yacht Norseman.
The transformation of Manchester from a minor country town into a mighty manufacturing powerhouse, had been given its first impetus in the 18th century with the building of the Bridgewater Canal. This had brought cheap fuel and raw materials to feed a growing industry, but it had its failings in slowness of delivery and low volumes. The next great step, in the 19th century, had been the building of the world’s first goods and passenger railway by George Stephenson, connecting the port of Liverpool to Manchester. Manchester and its satellite towns prospered and so did Liverpool, which creamed much profit from Port charges on every cargo. Yet more profit accrued to the railway company and the Bridgewater Canal. Seemingly there was enough for all whilst world demand for the products of “Cottonopolis” soared....but hard times lay ahead. Starting in the 1870’s demand began to slacken. What came to be known as “the Long Depression” took a toll on the cotton industry in the whole region. Manchester had, over the preceding years, exported not only its finished cotton goods, but also the machinery and technical expertise that made them, to the world. Now, in many of its markets, comparable goods were being produced - and much cheaper. Though Manchester’s quality was still in much demand, at the lower end of the scale lay stiff competition. The Manchester business community, ever resourceful, looked for means to restore the competitive edge, against a background of mill closures and rising unemployment. The focus was on what they regarded as the “excessive” tolls, port charges and transport costs that originated in Liverpool. Faced with an unwillingness 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP
to reduce such costs, they decided that there was only one solution. If they could not access the sea cheaply, then they must bring the sea to Manchester, via a Ship Canal! It had been done before of course. In 1734 the Mersey and Irwell Navigation had succeeded in making both rivers navigable for small, shallow draught vessels to reach as far as a wharf near the Cathedral. But both rivers constantly silted and in times of low rainfall, traffic came to a stop.
The Birth of the Ship Canal A radical solution was proposed by Manchester manufacturer, Daniel Adamson. In 1882 he called a meeting of representatives of neighbouring towns, local politicians, trade unions and civil engineers to form a Provisional Committee to advance the project. A Civil Engineer, Edward Leader Williams, put forward a plan for a channel to be excavated and dredged in the two rivers’ beds and a series of locks to be built whereby the Navigation could rise to the elevation of Manchester at 60 feet above sea level. This plan was approved and formed the basis of a Bill to be submitted to Parliament, at the end of 1882. The Provisional Committee appointed Joseph Lawrence, a noted fundraiser, to motivate interested parties and he organised public meetings across the region. It was estimated that the project would cost £5.16 million and take four years to complete (both estimates would later prove somewhat optimistic!). Not surprisingly, despite widespread support for the scheme throughout the Lancashire towns, the sole opposing exception was Liverpool, which saw the Canal scheme as a major threat to its income. So strong was this opposition that at its first presentation to Parliament, the Bill was rejected on a technicality. Petitions were signed in protest - the Manchester Petition alone carried 200,000 signatures - and led to a second

presentation to Parliament in 1884. Again, it was rejected, due to Liverpool opposition, on the grounds that a canal would lead to the siltation of the Mersey Estuary.
the Panama Canal. Some 54 million cubic yards of soil and rock were excavated - half as much as that for the Suez Canal - sufficient to create two large hills on the route.
However, an unwitting solution was provided by an engineer who was testifying on behalf of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. When asked what he would do to avoid the siltation problem, he stated “I would start the Canal at Eastham and pursue a separate course from the river to Runcorn alongside the Ince Banks”. Williams promptly incorporated this diversion into his plan and, on a third presentation to Parliament, the Bill was approved, as The Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885. A condition of the approval was that the Company formed to build and own the Canal must purchase its predecessors, both the Bridgewater Canal and the Mersey and Irwell Navigation, as these were seen as losers to the Manchester Ship Canal. This purchase resulted in the issuance of the world’s largest value cheque at that time, of £1,710,000!
It employed at peak 17,000 “navvies” who were paid fourpence ha’penny an hour for a 10 hour day (£16 a day in today’s money). In machinery, the project used 200 miles of temporary track, 180 locomotives, 6,000 trucks and wagons, 124 steam-powered cranes, 180 other steam engines and 97 steam excavators. The canal necessitated the building of a number of high level rail and road bridges, the most notable being Barton.
A total of £8m was raised to cover that purchase and construction costs, but this was exhausted after four years and only half of the project was completed. It was estimated that a further £7m and two more years were needed to complete. The money came from Manchester Corporation (the ratepayers of course!), which acquired majority representation on the Board of the Company. The final total cost of £15m, at present day values, is equivalent to £1.65 billion, but to achieve such a project today would leave little change from £20 billion! The Manchester Ship Canal is still the longest river navigation (essentially the old Mersey/Irwell courses), in the world and the 8th largest ship canal. At 40 miles it is only slightly shorter than
The Barton Acqueduct was built to replace Brindley’s stone ver sion that carried the Bridgewater Canal over the Irwell (now the Ship Canal). It became the world’s first swing acqueduct and carries a water section of the Bridgewater weighing 800 tons to this day. Together with its neighbouring road bridge, it is Grade II Listed. The Canal was opened along its whole length on 1st January 1894 and a procession of ships headed by the yacht “Norseman” travelled the course. On 21st May, Queen Victoria performed the Official Opening Ceremony and Knighted the Mayor of Salford, the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the builder, Edward Leader Williams. The Ship Canal made Manchester the third busiest port in the Country. By 1958, traffic had landed a peak annual tonnage of 18 million long tons. Ocean-going ships of up to 15,000 tons traded across the world and the city had its own shipping line, Manchester Liners, sailing as far as the Great Lakes of Canada. But that’s another story, for our next issue....

Expression Sessions! Family run photography company ‘Bubbaloo’ have made a name for themselves as fantastic newborn photographers for the last 4 years, and now, having opened the doors to a wonderful new studio in Roe Green, they’re going from strength to strength. Our new ‘Expression Session’ has been proving very popular, and could be the perfect way to ‘dip your toes’ (or your little ones toes!) into the world of professional photography! Essentially it’s a short and simple 30 minute session full of fun. Expression Sessions take place at the studio, and we’ll cram as much fun and silliness into your half hour slot as possible, all with the aim of getting plenty of wonderful shots of your little one, quite literally expressing themselves as only they know how! These sessions are part of our bespoke range, and the best shots are put together in a finished product that you can take home as canvas, acrylic or framed. We will capture your little ones personality in such a way it creates a real snapshot of them at that moment in time, one that you will cherish for years to come. Expression Sessions are a wonderful way to mark birthdays, special events, and they make a great gift too. Please do get in touch if you’d like more information, or to book your Expression Session today - we can’t wait to see you!

RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it... A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.
1
The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.
2
a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps. Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.
6
7
The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!
The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.
3
Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.
4
Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with

Interior Design Trends 2014 by On The Green Interiors Combining Textures Natural finishes, texture and metallics, often combined together, are the continuing design trends for 2014, which are all featured in the various wallpaper collections available today. The feature wall has been popular for the last few years and remains so but we are starting to see co-ordinating plains included in the collections, as the paper adds a little warmth and texture to a room rather than the cold finish of a painted wall.

Key Colours Colour wise, blue is making a comeback after it disappeared for a while in favour of teal and the paler duck egg blue. Pink, oyster pink and coral are also included in some of the latest fabric collections. The grey paint shades made popular by Farrow and Ball remain ‘on trend’ and their cool hues colour predictions for 2014 are ‘Cooking apple green’, Stiffkey blue, Purbeck stone and Moles Breath.
Keeping it simple De-cluttering, clean lines and no-fuss are the essentials for our homes today but an elegant drape of fabric can look fantastic in the appropriate space. For style guidance and advice on 2014 home fashion please call in to On The Green Interiors.

Make Your Home Beautiful with Wood by Lancashire Plank Furniture Company Lancashire Plank Furniture Company produces solid wood handmade furniture for the lounge, dining room, bedroom, hallway and kitchen from our workshop in Bolton. We use chunky rough sawn plank timber which, as well as looking beautiful, is hard wearing and won’t fall apart after a couple of months. We then hand wax all our furniture which brings out the natural grain of the timber and gives it a warm inviting finish. Our staff have 15 years experience in making furniture and provide friendly, personal customer service. You can come to us with pictures or a rough sketch of what you want and we will work with you to design a unique piece of furniture for your home that reflects
your needs and personal style. Or you can choose something from our range of standard items and buy direct from our website. Because we make all our furniture to order we can make it in any size, from a narrow bookshelf to fit in an awkward alcove to a large dining table to seat 16 people. Our prices also reflect the fact that you are dealing direct with the people who make your furniture and you’ll probably be surprised at how reasonable a handmade bespoke piece of furniture can be. So if you would like beautiful handmade bespoke furniture at straight from the factory prices then please give us a call on 01204 380300 or visit www.lancashireplank.com

Does your Central Heating need a
POWERFLUSH?
by Worsley
Plumbing & Heating
Rust occurs in central heating systems producing a black iron oxide ‘sludge’ which moves around the system blocking pipes, valves & boilers. Problems caused by Sludge n Radiators cold at bottom due to black sludge n Radiators cold all over due to blocked valves
and pipes n Irritating boiler noise from sludge or lime scale build up - a warning of imminent costly problems n Little or no hot water due to blocked pipes and heat exchangers n Boiler cutting out and no circulation caused by a blocked pump n Radiators cold at top and need bleeding due to gas build up, a by-product of rusting Worsley Plumbing & Heating say “dirty systems contribute to 80% of central heating breakdowns”. Dirty black or brown water when bleeding radiators is a tell-tale sign of rust problems.
The Powerflushing Solution Powerflushing will clean your whole central heating system, without having to take off all the radiators. Radiators and pipework are cleaned and flushed until all water samples are clear. A corrosion inhibitor is added afterwards to prevent future problems. The Benefits n Working hot radiators and reliable hot water n Rust protected central heating n Lower Fuel Bills n Peace of mind
Worsley Plumbing & Heating offer a Power Flush service from £250 3 times cheaper than British Gas! Contact them on 0161 900 3086

Maintenance: Taking Care of your Roof by Worsley Roofing Solutions Ltd Taking good care of our roofs is one of the most important responsibilities of owning a home. It protects us from all types of severe weather and without maintenance, ages the roof until it is no longer able to do its job. If we simply inspect our roofs more regularly, we would be in a position to act on small roofing issues to prevent any large-scale problems and expensive repairs, whilst also helping to maintain the value of their property. Here’s some advice for homeowners, buyers or sellers of homes and landlords on how to look after your roof:n Look out for tile debris on the ground or in gutters when inspecting your roof. n Look for tiles that look crooked or discoloured.
A loose tile will usually slip down exposing an unweathered surface that is a different colour to the adjacent tiles. n Remove any leaves, twigs, moss and debris from gutters and downpipes. Clearing your valleys is a job best done by a contractor. n If your ridge line dips up and down then it may be a sign that your roof is ageing and is in need of repair. n A roof leak will not always be visible from the outside, the most obvious sign of a problem will be a damp patch appearing on a ceiling or wall on the inside. A problem may not always be this obvious, so it pays to inspect the loft periodically. For more professional advice:-

Preparing Your Garden for Summer! Spruce Landscapes & Gardening share their insights into some of the local gardening trends. The feeling of spring is in the air and with 2014 set to be a scorcher, you’ve probably starting thinking about your garden. This is a great time to do that final garden tidy and start thinking about any other changes you might want to make ready to enjoy your garden this summer. Last year was a busy one for us, and we have been kept busy throughout the winter months despite the wet weather.
A Cure for Wet Weather! We have seen an increase in customers asking for Astroturf, due to heavy rain and water logged lawns. There are some great products out there, that give a durable and realistic finish to a lawn that can be enjoyed all year round. This is perfect for the kids to play out on, without bringing all the mud indoors! Alternatively you might want to consider installing a drainage system to improve the soil and make your garden more manageable and balanced.
Clean Lines If you are looking for a contemporary look in your garden with clean lines and lighting for the evening, this can be achieved by using alternative paving such as sawn black/grey limestone or granite, and edging with a contrasting material such at wood or cobbles. Whatever you decide it’s important to have a garden that works for you, so you can enjoy entertaining, pottering around or playing with the kids this summer.

CL ASSIC DRIVEWAYS Golden Trowel Winners 2007 & 2013 Classic Driveways’ Award Winning Design
In 2013, Classic Driveways won first prize in the Domestic category of the Golden Trowel Awards which recognises excellence in concrete design and construction. Sponsored by national supplier PICS (Pattern Imprinted Concrete Supplies), the annual awards invites everyone involved in the decorative concrete industry to submit their best projects from the last year. Judges from the Concrete Society then choose the top three entries from each of the classes. From hundreds of entries, it was Classic Driveways’ stunning pattern imprinted design that caught the eye of the judges. Taking several weeks to complete, the beautiful driveway combines attention to detail with excellent craftsmanship.
THE ONLY UK COMPANY TO HAVE WON IT TWICE! Having won the same award in 2007, Classic Driveways, based in Worsley, is the only company to have won it twice. Managing director David Faunt said: “We always strive to be innovative with our designs, and winning the Golden Trowel Award for the second time is testament to the excellent service we offer. We pride ourselves on being an honest and genuine company, going that extra mile to source quality products and create timeless designs.” Established in 2001, Classic Driveways has built an unrivalled reputation. With a background in architecture, David has vast experience of paving and landscaping designs, blending creative flair with expert planning through every phrase of the landscaping process.

Save Money by Repairing Windows by Window Geeks It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products. “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Tony McNorton, our surveyor in Manchester, “they get steamed-up and won't clear, the locks stick, they refuse to open …and it becomes even more of a problem in the winter when cold draughts get through... but what’s really surprising is that most people don't realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a small fortune”.
40 ON OUR DOORSTEP
The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up windows is less than £50...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window can be as low as £30 including VAT and fitting. WindowGeeks specialises in the repair and/or replacement of failed double glazed units, window and door locks, handles, friction stays and hinges. In addition, the company also supply and install new doors and window frames where a repair isn’t cost effective or simply where the customer is looking for a change.

Creating a Great First Impression! by DriveClean Northwest The first thing people see when entering your house is your drive, which in reality may have cost £000’s to have done. Unfortunately due to the UK climate, block paving, pattern imprinted concrete, flags and Indian sandstone can become infested with weeds, grass, algae, lichen and moss. This can mean that your investment can start to look a bit of an eyesore. ,
Cleaning and maintaining your outdoor areas is important not only aesthetically but to prevent them become slippy and dangerous. So what do you need to do to keep on top of this arduous dirty job? 1. KILL THE WEEDS - with weed killer from a DIY store 2. DEEP CLEAN - use a heavy duty flat surface pressure washer 3. RE-SANDING using fresh kiln dried sand (Block Paving) 4. SEAL IT - an application of suitable sealer (optional) With the correct equipment this job needn’t be as lengthy and dirty as you may imagine. However, get this wrong and you have the possibility of throwing away hundreds of £’s, use up a good few days of your life that you will never get back and also land yourself with a seriously bad back.
There are many local organisations that do this work professionally Driveclean Northwest is one and is based in Monton. Call Tom for a free quote on 07786 803841 or visit www.drivecleannw.co.uk
