A New WI in Swinton In the centenary year of the WI, a new Women's Institute opened in Swinton on 13th January this year. Meeting at St Mark's Parish Hall, Station Road, on the second Tuesday of every month, this dynamic group is open to all women living in Swinton and surrounding areas. The idea for a new WI came about from a group of friends who meet for lunch every few weeks, chatting about the type of organisation they would like to be a part of. Instead of looking around for the ideal, they decided to start their own. Holding to the core values of the WI, friendship, loyalty, education, fun … and cake, Swinton WI is already in full swing having started up groups of keen readers, gardeners, walkers, photographers, theatre-goers, crafters, and local history devotees.

As women with new interests join us the range of groups will more than likely expand. As well as clubs and groups based on members' interests, we also have a series of monthly meetings and talks organised for the rest of the year, ranging from beekeeping to search and rescue dogs, and from chutney making to weaving. All this and campaigning on local and national issues too! Anyone interested in joining Swinton WI or who would like more information, please contact:Liz Sperling on 07817 355 507 or Email: swintonwi@gmail.com Or come along to our next meeting at 7pm on the second Tuesday of the month at:-

GEORGIA’S CHILDREN OF THE WORLD

G FESTIVAL: Celebrating a Life to Improve the Life of Others

The G-Festival was something I imagined traveling immediately after the devastating blow of losing my daughter Georgia, only 19 years of age, to complications in her 3rd open heart operation in November 2010. Something that would not only bring her friends together to celebrate her life once a year, but something that could bring our community together to raise money to benefit under privileged children both at home and around the world. Last year’s festival at the Ellesmere Sports Club was attended by 3,000 people, raising over £20,000. Together with the G-Festival at the Waterside in Monton, the Ginger Fringe comedy nights at Albert’s Worsley and various other sponsored events, Georgia's Children of the World raised over £30,000.

Focussing on Water, Healthcare, Education and Nutrition, our projects have included:• Free Range Uniforms - providing sustainable jobs to impoverished village families in Cambodia whilst supplying vital school uniforms to underprivileged children in Salford and Manchester. • Providing critical fresh water ponds and wells. • Funding breakfast clubs in Salford. • Winter food parcels to children in Romania. • Supporting local children who lost a parent in tragic circumstances. This winter we have begun building Georgia's first school for over 100 children with “Build Your Future Today” in a remote village in northern Cambodia. Please come and support G-festival on Sunday 3rd May, for an amazing day out and the knowledge that together we are making a difference. ...Driven by Love, Guided by Angels

Peace of mind that your dog’s in safe hands while you’re away from home Do you worry about your four legged friends when you’re leaving to go on holiday? Are you concerned that they won’t get the attention, care and exercise they need in a kennel? Then why not try using Digs for Dogs, a service which gives your dog its very own vacation and one to one love. Pets are accommodated in a loving home environment with select families while their owners are away from home, for whatever reason. They are suitably matched with a loving home boarding family, who continue with the owner’s existing routine for exercising and feeding and whose environment is similar to the pet’s home. Let your dog have a great holiday while you are away having yours. For more information contact Andrea:-

Bolton School: The Very Best Start in Life At Bolton School, we offer children the very best start in life. With over 2,350 pupils, enjoying an education from Nursery to Sixth Form, we are one of the largest schools in the UK. The School balances the best of tradition with cutting-edge modernity. In 2016, the School will celebrate its 500th anniversary but this illustrious heritage is brought up to date by the recent completion of an £18m building programme, which has seen the construction of a new shared Sixth Form Centre, an Infant School, Junior Girls’ School and a refurbished Junior Boys’ School. All pupils at Bolton School now have iPads to complement their studies.

country. Girls and boys are able to enrol at the School at different stages in their educational journey: some begin as babies in the Nursery or join the Nursery Class for 3 and 4 year olds, others join the co-educational Infant School or wait until the single-sex Junior or Senior schools, each of which has its own Sixth Form. Whatever section of the School they join, children are guaranteed an education of academic rigour, wide extra-curricular choices and lots of individual support in small classes. Our “best of both worlds” offer means girls and boys can focus on their studies in single-sex classes but regularly collaborate in co-educational activities such as music, drama, outdoor pursuits and trips abroad.

ISI Inspections assess the School as “outstanding” and annual exam results regularly place the School among the top 100 schools in the

Woods, Wildlife and Wet Earth Did you know Salford boasts five Green Flag Award winning parks and open spaces? Salford Rangers give us an insight into the three main sites, which offer a wide range of activities throughout the year for all age ranges: - Clifton Country Park, Blackleach Country Park and Worsley Woods - all with their own unique characters. CLIFTON COUNTY PARK owes much of its existence to the area’s industrial past. Formerly the Wet Earth Colliery, the park now covers 50 hectares of meadow, woods, ponds and a lake with the River Irwell as its boundary. There’s a network of paths, such as the Wet Earth Trail to explore Clifton’s industrial past and also the Irwell Sculpture Trail. The site also has a concessionary bridleway. Clifton Country Park is popular with by walkers, cyclists, fishermen and horse riders and is a great place to enjoy a picnic, use the adventure play area or climb the rock boulder. The visitors centre is also a great place to find out about the area’s past. BLACKLEACH COUNTRY PARK in Walkden has seen the land change from peat bog to industrial use and is now countryside with a reservoir, meadows and woodlands to explore. The site is managed to provide a variety of habitats by Salford City Council’s Ranger team with the help of Salford Voluntary Rangers and is a great place to come and spot wildlife. Common Tern breed here in summer, along with 18 species of butterfly, Great Crested Newts and 13 species of dragonfly which have benefited from 10 new ponds over the last few years. WORSLEY WOODS covers 30 hectares of woodland, brook and wetland habitats with Old Warke Dam at the southern end of the site (featured in the main photo). The Dam was built originally as a private boating and fishing lake for the first Earl of Ellesmere and much of the woodland was planted to create a game reserve. Now there’s a new jetty for great views over the Dam, new footpaths and seating. There’s an adventure play area off Sefton Drive and a spring Wildflower Trail as well as stunning autumn colours later in the year. Salford City Council’s Ranger team runs everything from den building, wildlife studies and orienteering to guided walks throughout the year, while voluntary rangers help with conservation tasks at the three sites. New volunteers are always welcome. Get in touch by emailing Rangers@salford.gov.uk, or follow us on SalfordRangerTeam or @SalfordWildlife. 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Just Sing! Inspired by programmes on TV to have a go at singing in a choir? Did you know that Monton Village has its own choir? Monton Voices Community Choir has been a feature of the local music scene for almost 15 years now. They are a great asset to the village performing regularly at events such as the Christmas Lights Switch On and at local venues such as St Paul’s Church on Egerton Road in Monton.

rehearse from 7pm every Tuesday evening during term time at St Peter & St Paul’s Church on Park Road in Eccles. No audition is required just enthusiasm and commitment to attend the weekly rehearsals.

Choir members come from far and wide (not just from Monton) for the enjoyment that they get from performing a wide variety of pieces from choral pieces to show tunes – and have become great fundraisers for charity in the process.

In the run up to Christmas 2014 the choir performed to great acclaim in Salford Museum & Art Gallery, in Eccles Town Centre, held two highly successful concerts at St Paul’s Church Monton and raised over £1,300 for their chosen charity, The Christie Cancer Trust. Exciting things are already planned for 2015 including the Street Choir Festival in the historic Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby and they will be performing again at St Paul’s Church, Monton.

Under the energetic leadership of their multitalented Musical Director, Judy Kent, Monton Voices

Monton: Spring Update will also be encouraged to support this initiative.

Age Friendly Monton MVCA is pleased to announce the start of a new project for 2015, creating an age friendly Monton. Our aim is to ensure Monton is a place where local people feel they are able to age well, lead meaningful lives, enjoy better access to information and services and ultimately enjoy a better quality of life. Older residents are being asked to participate in a community questionnaire about how they live, shop, use local resources etc. From the results, a local plan of action will be formulated. Local businesses and services will receive advice on how to become more age-friendly and residents

Monton is already ideally-placed for attracting the status of being an Age Friendly Community: great open space, a high street with a local post office and bank, a good bus service, places of worship and places for social gathering... but there is always room for improvement. If you want to be part of this exciting project or would like more info about Age Friendly Monton, contact: Tracey Annette on 07852 873583, or Email: tannette65@googlemail.com

It’s the most Wonderful time of the year… Take a walk on Monton Green as the spring bulbs appear - and enjoy another aspect of the work of MVCA. If you have time on Sunday mornings join us to keep Monton blooming! This month we also have a new florist launching on Monton Road. We say a fond farewell to Loubelle’s and welcome The Flower Room - set to be a designer florist selling cards and gifts.

Get Fit to Run before you Run to get Fit The running season is in full swing and the Great Manchester Run is just around the corner, so we asked Worsley Physio for some essential running advice....

n Cardiac Fitness If in doubt check with your GP. Start training with a mixture of exercise , not just by running e.g. walking, swimming, cycling etc. n A Slow Build Up Build up your training very gradually, ensuring your body can adapt to the increase in mileage and intensity. A recommended rule of thumb is not to increase mileage by more than 10% a week. Rest and recovery are also very important. n Preventing Injuries Work on your core strength and flexibility with stretching and Pilates exercises, this will help keep injuries at bay.

n The Right Equipment Good footwear is essential - seek out a local specialist running shop where staff can advise you on suitable shoes. n Regular Sports Massage Regular massages will help your recovery between training sessions. n Distance and Pace Training should include shorter runs faster than race pace and longer runs at a slow pace. For more advice, get in touch with Worsley Physio:• Official Physiotherapists to the Greater Manchester Marathon • Sports Injury Specialists • Sports Massage • Pilates Classes

Your Beauty Problems Answered by Dawn, Worsley Laser Clinic A brand new feature, where you can ask Dawn for advice on your skin and beauty issues. Q: I have very patchy skin I have breakout on my chin yet dry areas on my cheeks and forehead ... what can I do? A: Try using a product which includes low level vitamin A (we recommend Environ AVST1) This is a cosmeceutical grade product which works in the deep layers of the skin to normalise and balance the functions of the skin. A customised facial will also help. Q: For a modern man, what are the most effective skin treatments available? A: Microdermabrasion is an increasingly popular treatment for men as its works on ingrowing hairs, lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. With regular

treatments plus with a good skin regime at home, clients have achieved some amazing results. Q: I have very bad ingrowing hairs on my bikini line. Is there a treatment to help? A: Yes indeed! Ellipse IPL hair reduction will not only get rid of the ingrowing hairs but will reduce the hair growth permanently. If you have a beauty problem or question you can tweet (@WorsleyLaser) or text it to us for an immediate response. We will also respond in the next edition of On Our Doorstep. RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it... A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.

1

The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.

2

a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps. Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.

6

7

The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!

The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.

3

Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

4

Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with

A Spring ShAke up by ON THE GREEN INTERIORS This is a great time for the Spring Shake-up. For looking at our homes and re-assessing what is tired, needs replacing or re-painting. Throwing out the clutter that has collected over the years and re-planning our living space. Key Colours Vibrant mediterranean colours with painterly designs including flowers, butterflies and insects are in most wallpaper and fabric collections on the high street. These designs just give that ‘pop’ of colour to work with the more muted shades often chosen in the furniture finishes or on the painted wall. Key Styles The industrial theme remains strong with metallic finishes mixed into textures in wallpapers, as does the clean lines of the Scandinavian style which is reflected in the natural finish look of their designs. For inspiration and design ideas call in to On The Green Interiors to view the latest collections and discuss your ‘spring shake-up’ with our consultant. Lesley Fletcher

ACHIEVING THE INDUSTRIAL STYLE LOOK… Accessories for the Home is a local business run by Sam Walkden who lives in Worsley with her husband and 2 beautiful children. After many years working long hours as a Project Manager, Sam decided to use her passion for interiors to create her own online e-boutique offering beautiful and inspiring Accessories for the Home.

Industrial style interiors are commonly associated with loft apartments, warehouses or barns; this is simply not the case, the look can be adapted to any abode. Still one of the hottest trends in Interiors, the Vintage/Industrial look can be easily achieved, by combining materials such as rustic exposed finishes and materials that suggest an Industrial past. These elements can seem quite harsh on their own but blending them with a neutral palette, fine ceramics and soft furnishings will help to give it a softer more intimate feel. Work with what you have make a focal point of exposed rough brick walls in its natural state, dressed with an oversized clock or large vintage maps. Natural wood flooring with its imperfections and flaws is a way of bringing warmth and character into your interiors, softening the roughness of brick and metal, add a rug? it will be cosier underfoot and also enhance your décor. While the emphasis can be on buying new, there are plenty of ways to reuse, recycle and reinvent distressed furniture that adds character and history to your living space. Check out the salvage yards or car boot sales for some unique finds like metal, worn wood or glass…. don’t be afraid of being creative!

STATEMENT FURNITURE The idea is often associated with minimalism so it is key to choose quality pieces that last and embrace the look you are trying to emulate. If your room is open plan, a solid wood table with old type metal legs paired with industrial style café chairs or metal bar stools can add a touch of industrial chic, remember less is more, so choose your key pieces carefully!

ACCESSORIES/SOFT FURNISHINGS You don’t want the room to feel cold and uninviting. Bring nature into the room, large architectural plants work well and bring a soothing feeling to the space. Mirrors help to give a sense of space by reflecting light, therefore brightening a room. Mixing circles into your décor is a great way to soften hard lines and create focal points. Mirrors can make a striking difference to the overall feel of a room. The Industrial style also fits well with vintage style furniture. This helps to add a warm intimate feel. The most important thing about giving your house an Industrial makeover is to not hold back and have fun ge ng creative! The best interiors are those that evolve over time and not created in a day.

PAUL DONOHUE BUILDING SERVICES Increase the Living Space in your Home There are various ways to improve your home, raise the price of the house and provide your family with a more tailored, personalised space to live in. The most popular ways are single or two storey extensions, or garage conversions which use an existing space to increase the home’s useable living area. Sunrooms are also a way of extending the house, whether it be a kitchen extension into a light filled room or used as a playroom, lounge, office...the list is endless.

A very popular aspect to kitchen extensions these days are the bi-folding doors which mean that the entire back of the kitchen can open up in to the garden and become one space, great for the summer when the kids are playing in the garden, eating al fresco etc. Loft conversions can also add to the square footage of the house with velux windows to bring in light. Even in some of the older houses in the area there is a style of Velux windows which can be used. Lofts are great to turn into bedrooms, office space or a snug. Paul Donohue Building services deal with all types of extensions, new builds, conservatories and structural work. Window Wise Signs that your windows need repairing... If your PVC-u windows are draughty allowing cold air to enter your home then the cost of heating your home could be substantially increased, worn hinges can also compromise the security attributes of your windows. So if the traffic outside your home seems noisier than it used to, or if you are finding dirt deposits on the inner cills of your windows, then it is time to replace those worn out friction stays (hinges) and seals. Locks and mechanisms that grate or are stiff as you turn the handle, hinges that are buckled or do not close in tightly any more, are only going to get worse and need attention. Misted up windows are unsightly and a sign

that they are no longer efficient. Many people believe that a replacement window is required. However, practically any window can have the double glazed unit(s) replaced with minimal disruption. Some of the larger window companies will opt to quote on replacement windows rather than changing a couple of failed units, which would be a greater expense for you. Window Wise are happy to provide a quotation for replacement glass units over the phone if you have the approximate sizes or they can call round to provide a free survey and price without obligation. Chat Moss: The “Rainforest” On Our Doorstep Chat Moss: photography by Nick Harrison

It is extraordinary that so few people in Worsley, Eccles, Irlam and Cadishead are aware they have a vast expanse of ancient open countryside just a short distance from their homes. There might be a hint of this if they are in the habit of feeding wild birds in their gardens, such is the variety of unusual and colourful visitors who come to enjoy their hospitality, but most never see such beauties. Our area is flat, only the fortunate few who live on the higher ground between Worsley and Boothstown have the privilege of viewing the home of those birds, the sweeping green oasis that is Chat Moss. In the midst of the urban desert that is Greater Manchester, with a population of 2.7 million, Chat Moss is a 10.6 square mile oasis of greenery with probably less than 1,000 people living in it! WHAT IS A “MOSS” ? Chat Moss and a number of smaller, similar sites in the Mersey catchment area, is a “Lowland raised peat bog”, common in Ireland, but now very rare in Britain. They owe their existence to the many years following the last Ice Age some 10,000 years ago when a great sheet of ice, perhaps thousands of feet thick, covered all of the north of our island. Polar bears and mammoths roamed your garden - believe it or not! When the ice melted and retreated north, back to the Arctic, it left behind a thick layer of “boulder clay” on the land, great stuff for holding water. And, on what we now know as Chat Moss, it created a lake of huge proportions. Fed by the Irwell and Mersey and many smaller streams, it eventually extended to a length of about 7 miles by 5 miles and had depths of up to 30 feet. Surrounded by forest, populated by deer, wolves, lynx and bears, over the next 3000 years it slowly silted and became shallow fens, choked by dead and rotting vegetation. Such 42 ON OUR DOORSTEP

conditions are ripe for colonisation by a wide variety of sphagnum mosses, primitive plant forms which, in their growth over millenia, create peat. Alive only on top of their dead predecessors in a water-sodden morass, they build to make bogs and so, for the next 7,000 years Chat Moss grew in extent and height... In 1724 the traveller and writer Daniel Defoe passed by the Moss on a journey from Warrington to Manchester and with some horror described it thus; “black and dirty ...frightful to think of... it will bear neither horse nor man... entirely waste except for poor cottagers’ fuel”. An earlier writer in the time of Henry VIII, John Leland, wrote of a “brast up” (bursting) of the bog when, sodden with water, it erupted into the Glazebrook, the Irwell and Mersey, polluting all and killing vast numbers of fish. He stated that the peat sludge “reached the shores of Wales, the Isle of Man and even Ireland”. RECLAMATION With a growing population such, an extensive yet forbidding tract of land could not be permitted to remain in pre-historic chaos and be unproductive. Starting in 1793, a William Roscoe leased the smaller Trafford Moss on the south bank of the Irwell from the de Trafford family and began to dig deep drains to dry the Moss. He added clay and lime to give “body” to the peat and then manure to fertilise it. He then built on success by leasing a small part of Chat Moss from the same family in 1805. He installed a moveable light railway which spread the weight of loads of the same materials he had employed before and gained access deeper into the Moss landscape. His methods avoided any sinking into the bog. George Stephenson’s pioneering Liverpool to Manchester Railway finally conquered the crossing of Chat Moss FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

ingeniously in 1826 by sinking mats of wood weighted by stone, into the bog until a causeway could rest securely and the railtrack be laid. It was the mushrooming growth of Manchester’s population which provided the greatest boost to reclamation. By the 1880s refuse disposal was a huge problem - some 200,000 tons a year – and 75% of that was human “night soil”... So, in 1895, Manchester Corporation purchased 2,500 acres of the “useless” bog from the de Traffords for £137,000 (£13 million at today’s values - what a sweet deal for the previous owner) and began shipping its refuse down the Ship Canal to Boysnope Wharf at Barton. From there the light railway transported the odourous cargo to the Moss. Farmers on the Corporation’s land were required under the terms of their lease not only to accept the refuse, but also to pay for it. Surely a classic case of “where there’s muck , there’s money”. Such disposal systems finished only in 1966. The net result of all this fertilisation of the peat medium on the Moss was to produce some of the finest agricultural soil in Britain. Virtually all of it is Grade 1 and 2 quality, ideal for the growing of vegetables and over 50 farms on the Moss provided Manchester with return cargoes of high quality produce... NATURE WINS In later years many of the farms, particularly the larger, have turned to cereal, dairy and livestock production. Woodland had been present on drained areas for over 200 years and one such Botany Bay Wood - is the largest forested area in Greater Manchester. The Moss had always been isolated from its surroundings; by its bleakness and “uselessness”, by its owners excluding all access (to the present day even), by its supposed lack of the picturesque. In such circumstances it became a haven for wildlife driven away from their homes by mining and the growth of encircling industrial towns.

Without doubt the Moss, now verdant, harbours a wealth of wildlife in its varied habitat. It has deer, many mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Many are endangered nationally such as the Water Vole, the Great Crested Newt and the Brown Hare. It has many rare insects that are adapted to bogland environments, but perhaps its greatest glory is its birdlife. Some 87 bird species inhabit Chat Moss of which 15 species are on the national Red List as being critically endangered and a further 28 species are on the Amber List as being in need of Protection. The most spectacular concentration of one species the Grey Heron - exists as a breeding colony of over 100 pairs in Botany Bay Wood and constitutes the 5th largest such gathering in the entire country! This is a treasure house of wildlife and the entire area should have statutory protection as a Nature Reserve. The Lancashire Wildlife Trust take a keen interest in Chat Moss in recognition of its importance. They are also active in rejuvenating parts of the Moss to restore living bogland. At Astley Moss, Bedford Moss and Little Woolden Moss they are fostering the re-growth of the tiny moss plants on old peat extraction workings with great success. These are open to the public. THERE ARE STILL THREATS... Though peat extraction has now ceased, the Landowner still has ambitions to develop the Moss. The recently failed attempt to create “Salford Forest Park” as a leisure facility of a Racecourse, an Equestrian Centre, a Hotel and a Golf Course has not deterred future efforts. The next threat on the agenda is Fracking, a very contentious issue. Although the Moss is Green Belt land, such a status carries only landscape protection and ignores wildlife. It is to be hoped that more altruistic visions for Chat Moss will eventually prevail.

Are you aware of the pension reforms coming into effect on the 6th April 2015? From April 2015 It’s likely everyone will be able to take out as much or as little from their private pension pot any time after age 55. So there will no longer be a requirement to buy an annuity. You’ll have greater simplicity, choice and flexibility, making pensions an even more attractive choice for saving than ever before. If you would like some more information or will be effected by the changes please get in touch with one of our financial advisers on 0161 777 9797 or email financialservices@irlamestates.co.uk

Let us help you plan your financial future! The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise. You may not get back the amount originally invested.
