A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO DAY NURSERIES
Bridgewater School offers a warm, safe, caring and stimulating environment where enjoyment is key to successful learning. Children are encouraged to play and develop through a structured pre-school curriculum. Parents can be satisfied with the knowledge their children will be taught by highly qualified, carefully selected staff who are skilled and experienced in this area. Our EYFS Department provides a spacious, work and play environment for the Kindergarten and Reception classes. We deliver outstanding childcare provision, which offers your child the best start in life. G-Festival 2016 This year will see the 5th annual G-Festival which has become a community destination for so many people in the area. The festival will see ‘Georgia's Children of the World’ cross the staggering £100,000 barrier in fund raising! Thanks to your incredible support and generosity the legacy of 19 year old Georgia has helped children at home and across the world. This has been recognised a short while ago by BT, one of the largest communication companies in the world, as Keith Tulsie recently won BT Chairman’s Award for his work with Georgia’s children. We will ‘Kick off’ the day as usual with our Junior football tournament, this year run by volunteers from Salford Lads Club, and the main stage will be headlined by the ‘The Smiths Ltd’. As an established registered charity we still operate with ZERO overheads so every penny you donate

goes DIRECTLY to our key projects. Some of our funding goes to sustain existing projects providing Water, Healthcare, Education and Nutrition programs to villages in Cambodia and Romania with no water, electricity, sanitation or education and little or no hope of children fulfilling their potential without our support. Georgia's House 3 now thrives as a school educating 140 children, feeding them with a healthy meal everyday. To watch them grow and learn has been an incredible thing to witness. At home along with Lifecentre in Salford we help support children on our doorstep for whom a breakfast, a free school uniform and social/ behavioural programs gives them a real opportunity to develop into young adults with decent values and a sense of community. Our Free Uniform project continues to provide 100's of school uniforms referred to us by the local councils.

COME AND SING AT ST MARK’S! Everyone is welcome to take part in a singing experience at St. Mark’s Church in Worsley! St. Mark’s is holding a “Come & Sing” event on Saturday 21st May 2016. “I want everyone to feel welcome to join in and experience singing Vivaldi’s Gloria. It doesn’t matter whether you're part of a choir or ever have been.” says Jeff Ramsdale, the organist and choirmaster at St. Mark's. Dating from the early 18th Century, Vivaldi's Gloria is one of the lighter pieces for choirs and soloists. If you know his music from the Four Seasons you will find it exciting to take part in a performance of this work, if you don’t it’s an exciting experience anyway! The event is being held to raise awareness and
funds for Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention and for a donation of just £10, anyone can take part. You will be invited to attend the rehearsal in the morning (10.30-12.30pm), take a break for lunch, and then have an afternoon rehearsal (1.30-3.30pm). The performance will take place at the church at 5.00pm for friends and family to enjoy. 1 in 10 women and 1 in 1,000 men will develop breast cancer during their lifetime and this year Genesis celebrates 20 years of raising funds for research to prevent it in future generations. If you would like to “Come and Sing” at St. Mark's please e-mail Jeff (jramsdale@hotmail.com) to reserve a place. Places are not limited but we can only provide copies of Vivaldi's Gloria to the first 100 singers who register. We look forward to seeing you there! Susan Robinson, cofounder of Home Instead Salford
Home... There’s no place like it!
We are delighted to announce that Home Instead Senior Care has arrived in Salford. There are already offices throughout the UK and in 17 countries around the world and now Home Instead has opened in Swinton on Worsley Road, next door the Humphrey Booth Centre. As Susan Robinson, co-founder of Home Instead Salford explains “When I was looking for some help and support for my mum in the summer holidays - I drew a blank. I was unable to find anyone who could deliver the standard of care mum needed, and call just twice a day while we were away. It was at this time that I was introduced to Home Instead - the more I listened to the ethos and culture of the company and the services provided - well quite frankly it was music to my ears!” Home Instead Senior Care provides exemplary care - highly personalised and always client centred. Companionship, comfort and compassion, as well as practical assistance with personal care and household tasks in the security of your own home! Susan continues “Ultimately our aim is to keep mums and dads, aunties and uncles in their own homes for as long as possible. Home is where where people feel comfortable, safe and secure
and where they want to be. It is our mission to provide a consistency of care that is second to none. Our clients will not be inundated with different faces but will have a small team of two or three to keep them happy and reassured. We are extremely proud to say that we have a minimum visit time of one hour. Time to chat, time to sing and time to dance if that is what is required. Alternatively, a trip to the shops or cleaning out a cupboard may be the order of the day. Care that is client centred and NOT task driven.” Although our clients are extremely important, so too are our CAREGivers. We are looking for caring, passionate and dedicated people. No experience is necessary as on-going training will be given. We are only seeking CAREGivers who want to care and who are proud to say “I love caring and being with people!” Our offices are very welcoming and the kettle is always on. If you have an hour a week or more to spare and would like to support someone in your community, please call in for a chat.

Village Update
Long Live Monton Community Festival After the Monton Midsummer Festival in 2015, it was clear that the event could not continue in the same way. Pavements were overcrowded with adults, pushchairs and children, roads were full of people too and it just wasn’t safe. So it is with great pleasure that Monton Village Community Association announce the new, improved Monton Community Festival to be held on Duke’s Drive, on Saturday July 2nd (and maybe 3rd) 2016. Plans are still being made and may have to change (so watch this space), but we hope to bring you many of our old favourites plus some new, improved elements...

Hunters share their tips on the
Top 3 Home Improvement Projects Whether you are thinking about selling your home in the near future or further down the road, most home owners want to make improvements to their property which aren’t too costly but do add value. Here are our TOP 3 HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS which could help you to do this: CONSERVATORY: Providing an extra room in your house and allowing you to get the most out of the summer. Tip: Heating and ventilation are important. Make sure you have some radiators or heaters installed, and think about blinds too, as these will help keep it cool in warmer months.
NEW KITCHEN: Most people like to see the Wow Factor in a Kitchen when buying a new home. Tip: Many cupboard doors can be re-painted or replaced without having to get new units. By spending a few hundred pounds, you can make your kitchen look as good as new. LOFT CONVERSION: Make sure that there is at least 2.2m of height to be able to stand up in, and ensure you know how much your conversion will cost. Leave a cushion in your budget for any unforeseen circumstances. Tip: You will need to apply for planning consent from your local authority before converting your loft space. It’s a small cost but a necessity.
If you are interested in finding out the current value of your property, please call our Sales Team on 0161 790 9000 or email worsley@hunters.com

Window Wise
Do your windows need repairing? If your PVC-u windows are draughty allowing cold air to enter your home then the cost of heating your home could be substantially increased, this is usually a case of worn hinges (Friction Stays) which can also compromise the security attributes of your windows. So if the traffic outside your home seems closer than it used to then it is time to replace those worn out hinges and seals. Door and window locks and mechanisms that grate or are stiff as you turn the handle are only going to get worse and need attention. Misted up windows are unsightly and a sign that they are no longer efficient. Many people
believe that a replacement window is required. However, practically any window can have the double glazed unit(s) replaced with minimal disruption. Some of the larger window companies are not interested in repairs and would rather spend their time quoting for full replacement windows. Window Wise would be happy to provide a quotation for replacement glass units over the phone if you have the approximate sizes or they can call round to provide a free survey and price without obligation. If I had a Hammer... The Coat of Arms of Eccles, before the town was swallowed by Salford and lost its identity, depicted an extraordinary piece of engineering, a Steam Hammer! What on earth was such a contraption and why was it so glorified? In all the frenetic pace of the Industrial Revolution of the 17th to 19th centuries, new inventions were created that powered progress, but one of the most significant was this monolithic and powerful tool. It transformed metalworking from little more than the labours of blacksmiths into mastery of mass production. Essentially it made possible the transformation of large metal masses - hot from the furnaces which had smelted them - into shaped forgings for use as machine components. It was capable of achieving this with sheer brute force, but exquisite precision, on wrought iron, cast iron, and even steel.
WHO THOUGHT OF IT ? A Scottish engineer, James Watt started the ball rolling when, in 1784, he invented the steam engine. This revolutionary machine was a huge leap in technology in an age that relied on water, horse and human muscle power. At the heart of the steam engine was the concept of a cylinder encasing a piston propelled by steam pressure that transferred energy to provide motive power. Ultimately this was to culminate in use in locomotives, most notably in George Stephenson’s “Rocket” nearly 40 years later. Watt noted that his concept could be used to power a hammer, but did not pursue the thought... In 1806 a Mr Deverell a Surrey engineer filed a patent for a Steam Hammer as did a Mr Hague in 1827 for another variation, but neither came to fruition since they lacked the ability to 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP
regulate the force of the hammer or have any degree of precision.
CAME THE HOUR, CAME THE MAN (MEN?) James Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh in 1808 where his father was a landscape and portrait painter. One of his father’s hobbies was mechanics and he encouraged his son to work with him. James’s friend was the son of an iron founder and so he spent much time at the Foundry learning to work and “turn” in wood and a variety of metals. In 1820, with such skills, he made his first steam engine and, in 1827 he built a steam-powered carriage capable of carrying 8 passengers - he was just 19 years old! Gaining further training at a company in London called Maudsleys, he managed to save the princely sum of £69, the equivalent of perhaps several thousand these days. With this he decided to start his own mechanical engineering company, and to do so in Manchester, in Dale Street ( just off Piccadilly), He was then only 23 years old... In 1836, the floor of his first establishment having collapsed into his neighbour’s glassworks beneath under the weight of his creations... he cast about for new premises. On a business trip to Liverpool on the famous new railway built by George Stephenson he passed over the Bridgewater Canal (both constructions “firsts” in their time) and spied the perfect site for his factory – Green Lane in Patricroft. He had two means of transport on the doorstep. In partnership with a friend, Holbrook Gaskell, his new factory

Local History
Bridgewater Foundry, 1839
Drawing of Nasmyth’s Hammer
was built on the site and they called it the Bridgewater Foundry. Initially they concentrated on building metal-shaping machines but soon were producing railway locomotives for the Great Western Railway Company. It was through this business connection that they were approached to try and solve a major problem. The GWR also operated a transatlantic shipping line and were having a paddle steamship built by the famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the “Great Britain”. The problem lay in forging a drive-shaft to propel the giant steamer’s paddle wheels. Nothing so large (30 inches diameter) had ever before been required or attempted. This challenge was a spur to Nasmyth’s inventive genius, to create a steam hammer of unprecedented power that could produce giant forgings with speed, control and precision. But he was not the only one chasing this golden prize... A Frenchman, Francoise Bourdon, was also working on it. In 1839, both men came up with the solution simultaneously. Both men made detailed drawings of such a device (varying in small but significant ways) which, curiously, they shared with any visiting engineers – there must have been a lot of trust in those days! But then calamity stepped in and all their work seemed in vain. The “Great Britain” was to be powered by a propeller instead of paddles and the giant forging was no longer required! Nasmyth promptly shelved his design, Bourdon’s employers saw no future in his design until, in 1840, when they visited Nasmyth and saw the practicality. They ordered Bourdon to build. As a result the world’s first Steam Hammer was produced by their Company, Schneider & Cie. It was patented in FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504
Restored Hammer (2015) Nasmyth’s Business Park
1841. In the following year Nasmyth visited their factory and was taken by Bourdon “... to see his own (Nasmyths!) child”. Nasmyth then patented his own design in 1842 and built it in Patricroft the same year. Though disputes broke out between the two men in later years as to who had done it first, the designs were sufficiently different to be separate valid patents. In truth perhaps the credit really belonged to James Watt... Steam hammers halved the production costs of forgings. Such was the precision of Nasmyth’s machine that he enjoyed demonstrating it by placing an egg in a glass and having the hammer deliver a blow of many tons (sufficient to shake the building) to crack the egg without harming the glass... He went on to use the same principle to invent a Pile Driver in 1843. In 1845 he demonstrated this in a competition in Devonport against a team using conventional methods. His Pile Driver pounded a pier piling measuring 70 feet by 18 inches square into place in just over 4 minutes. The other team took 12 hours. His creation went on to build the High Level Bridge at Newcastle and the Aswan Low Dam in Egypt. Nasmyth kept on inventing even after his retirement at only 48 years of age. He went to live in Kent where he became a noted astronomer, until he died in 1890. His local memorials are two of his Hammers one at the Business Park opposite his Foundry on Green Lane in Patricroft and one at the University of Bolton. The Bridgewater Foundry became a Royal Ordinance Factory, making munitions in the Second World War and has only recently been demolished. A wasteland of rubble it is a sad testimony to our industrial past.

CELEBRATING ECCLES 2016 Crown Theatre
Monks Hall
CELEBRATING CULTURE • CREATIVITY • COMMUNITY • ENTERPRISE IN GREATER ECCLES Now in our 3rd successful year, Celebrating Eccles 2016 (Wednesday May 18th to Sunday May 22nd) celebrates the unique, rich and varied culture, creativity, community and enterprise of our diverse community. We shall be promoting and supporting a range of local events and community activities across Greater Eccles (Cadishead, Irlam, Peel Green, Patricroft, Winton, Worsley, Monton, Ellesmere Park, Eccles & Barton) which represent and present what it is like to have been born, to live and to work in Greater Eccles. We are particularly interested this year to draw attention to some of our cultural and community icons such as Monks Hall Museum and the Lyceum Theatre (pictured above) both of which are locally revered buildings and have over many
years brought so much pleasure and enjoyment to generations of Ecclesiasts. We will also recognise and highlight the activities of local groups such as Barton Athletic Club and many others who work so hard to support the health and wellbeing of our community. If you are planning (or would like our help to organise) an event for your group or community, please do let us know and we shall promote it to 80,000 people and the 3,000 companies in Greater Eccles. Join us and be part of Celebrating Greater Eccles in 2016 !

Eccles Craft & Farmers’ Markets
Ecclesshoppingcentre
Eccles Craft and Farmers’ Markets take place every month, in Eccles Shopping Centre, on the THIRD Saturday of the month. Do you know what’s available there? Pop down and you will be very impressed with the range and quality of the products... Beautiful free range eggs of all types and sizes. Don’t be late for these, though: regular customers start arriving at 8am and they’re usually all sold out by lunchtime! Route Ginger’s very yummy cakes are another attraction and well worth a visit. Not to mention the world famous (well, world famous in the North West, anyway!) Bob’s Black Puddings. Great, down-to-earth pies for tea? Olives and chocolates if you want to pamper yourself one evening, and hot, spicy potato tornados to eat NOW! Sorry about the diets, folks… Beautiful knitted clothes and blankets, hand-made toys, designer candles and intricate stained glass gifts, the perfect place to buy lovely, unique presents. Not to mention that every other month, there is an extended market with extra stalls and interests, new names added every day – you can see them on Eccles Shopping Centre’s Facebook page. It’s a (market) day not to be missed! See you there!
