Welcome It’s been a busy few months working on some exciting developments, starting with our new On Our Doorstep & Live it Local logo and a new style front cover. We hope you like them! We are redesigning our website too, which will be launching in the coming weeks, so “watch this space” as they say! Our first magazine was published over seven years ago in 2010. Since then we have steadily developed the content, expanded our circulation and added new services to our business. Did you know we offer leaflet distribution with our magazines, social media marketing packages, and design & printing services? Supporting the community continues to be a priority for us. As well as promoting local groups, charities and events in our magazines, we are sponsoring events such as the Roe Green Egg Hunt, the Monton Village Festival in July, and even taking part in a few local charity fundraisers!

G-Festival 2017
G-Festival 17 is fast approaching following another hugely successful year for Georgia’s Children and another opportunity for the community of Worsley and Salford to get together and make a difference for disadvantaged kids both at home and around the world! Our free school uniform project continues to provide hundreds of free school uniforms to children referred to us by Salford City Council from Georgia’s House 5 at the Lifecentre in Salford. We are also now supporting local 5 year old Heidi-Lou with her physiotherapy in her constant battle against cerebral palsy. Heidi-Lou was guest of honour at our recent ” MADCHESTER” night which raised over £3,000 which will pay for Heidi’s weekly physiotherapy sessions for the next 12 months and with recent assistance from some of the most successful business men in Salford Georgia’s Children goes from strength to strength

Overseas at Georgia’s House 4 we delivered winter food parcels to some of the poorest children in Europe facing minus a winter of 25 degrees. In Cambodia Georgia’s Houses 1,2 and 3 continue to provide Water, Healthcare, Education and Nutrition to children in one of the world’s poorest countries. Also underway is “Carole’s Classroom” in memory of Georgia’s mum and “Georgia’s School of Rock”. This year’s G-Festival takes a huge step forward as we gratefully welcome on board our corporate sponsors, the Morson Group. As always Georgia’s Children will deliver an amazing family day out and the biggest music festival in Salford. This year headlined by “The Total Stone Roses” and “Small Weller” with a special appearance from Mike Sweeney and the Salford Jets and more local talent.

We did it !
REFURBISHMENT TARGET REACHED! In October 2015, the Roe Green community agreed to try and raise £100,000 to save Roe Green Play Park. Salford City Council had announced that it may have to close without such efforts due to the poor condition and safety of the equipment. A committee was formed, who worked incredibly hard during 2016 to set up a charitable company, to raise the required monies through events, grants, donations and awards. It was with great delight that the announcement was made on New Year's Eve that the target had been reached! £100,000 had been secured! The play park could be saved! Since that announcement more monies have been secured from Tesco Bags for Life and the
Co-op’s Local Community Fund. Plus, we will be raising more at our annual Roe Green Easter Egg Hunt, with St Mark’s CofE School PTA. Join us Saturday 15th April at 1pm on the Green for plenty of fun! The final play park designs are now with contractors and Salford City Council and the Play Park Committee hope to start refurbishment work in Summer 2017. Watch out for updates on the works on... Care Training Places Released to Meet Demand Local homecare provider, Home Instead Senior Care, have released 70 FREE training places for caregivers as demand for care services spirals in the local area. A perfect storm of an ageing population combined with increasing levels of loneliness and pressure on social care budgets has led to a surge in demand for care services which will enable local elderly people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Speaking about the need to train more staff, Susan Robinson of Home Instead in Salford said, “The impact of a national shortage of carers is being felt locally and creating problems for the elderly in particular. In 2017 it’s time to care.”
“The service we provide is focused on providing much-needed company and social stimulation to elderly people as well, of course, as more traditional care services. You don’t need to have experience but the right attitude and a caring and empathetic nature. We match clients and caregivers based on shared interests. Following initial induction training, our caregivers receive additional training based on the individual needs of the clients they are matched to.” On completion of the initial training, caregivers receive the nationally recognised Care Certificate and can go on to further develop their skills with additional qualifications should they wish. Anyone interested in applying for one of Home Instead training places should contact 0161 870 3861 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/Salford.

DELICIOUS LOCAL BRUNCHES Not quite breakfast. Not quite lunch. The late morning to mid-afternoon tradition of brunch has existed in some form since the late nineteenth century. Originating in England in the 1890s, this culinary contender to breakfast reached a peak in popularity in 1930s as it spread to the United States. British writer Guy Beringer first used the word “brunch” in 1895 in an essay in Hunters Weekly called “Brunch: A Plea.” Beringer suggested brunch could be a sociable alternative to the quick breakfasts and heavy, post church meals of the day, as well as a better time for those with hangovers to eat! Who can argue with that? Over the past decade, the Brits have fallen back in love with brunch and more establishments are offering breakfasts and brunches to meet demand. Find here a selection of local eateries serving some of the best brunches in our community.

Those magnificent men in their flying machines... They are up there every day and often we don’t even bother to look up to investigate. The reason is because we have grown up with them, they have been in our local sky for almost a hundred years and are no novelty – as they would be in many other parts of the Country. “They” are the ever-present light aircraft emanating from what we locals know as “Barton Aerodrome”. It has had a few other names, since it was constructed in 1928, completing in 1930, as the United Kingdom’s very first purpose-built municipal airport. It was Manchester Airport and was duly called exactly that! The runways were, and still are, grass. A large Hangar was built for the protection of aircraft and, in 1933, a handsome Control Tower equipped with wireless communication with aircraft (both of which are still operational and Grade 2 Protected as relics of aviation history). An adjacent farmhouse became a Terminal and sheltered accommodation for passengers awaiting flights.
Services Begin The new Airport, financed by the municipal authority of Manchester, went into the business of providing air transport in the summer of 1930. Imperial Airways (in later life to become BOAC and then British Airways!) operated a thrice-weekly service to Croydon via Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. The flights originated in Croydon, stayed overnight at Barton, then flew back the following morning to connect with flights to Europe. Other airlines were quick to use the Barton facility, with a Croydon-based airline, Railway (?!) Air Services flying via Barton to Belfast and 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Glasgow. By 1935 there were services linking Barton to Liverpool, Blackpool and the Isle of Man were in operation. But Barton’s days of glory in providing large scale passenger services were drawing to a close. The boggy nature of the airfield (it is part of the Chat Moss complex) meant that larger heavier aircraft could not use the runways. In fact the heaviest aircraft ever to do so were the DC3 Dakotas of Aer Lingus in the 1940’s. Accordingly, in 1938, all scheduled passenger services were transferred to the new airport for Manchester - “Ringway”, which from 1940 to 1957 also became an RAF base.
New Roles for Barton With World War II, Barton was requisitioned by the Government for the repair of military aircraft, which was carried out by civilian companies from the then giant industrial complex of neighbouring Trafford Park. These aircraft were a wide variety, from fighters to bombers, and included Hurricanes, Fairey Battles, Avro Ansons and Corsairs, all of which could then be conveniently flown back to their bases. Then Fairey Swordfish, the slow torpedo bomber type that had attempted to cripple the “Bismarck” German battleship, were scrapped at Barton and over 700 Percival training aircraft were built by Hills & Sons of Trafford Park and test flown at the airfield, which was kept very busy throughout Fairey Swordfish the war. Local History
de Havilland Tiger Moth Aircraf at Manchester Airshow 2015 Control Tower built in 1933
A sole passenger service continued the airport’s original purpose, and this was the Aer Lingus flight by DC3, from Dublin to Barton, between 1940 - 1942. Perhaps because a ship crossing might have been more vulnerable to German attack or time was considered important, this service continued without any incident. Come the end of the War and yet another new life for Barton dawned.
Training and Recreation In 1946 the Lancashire Aero Club moved their base to Barton, starting an association that was to last until 2007. At the same time the Manchester University Air Squadron and the RAF No.2 Reserve Flying School also moved in and remained until 1953, ensuring that the skies would always be full of their activities. All these groups engaged on training in Tiger Moths and Chipmunk aircraft, the School training future RAF personnel. The Aero Club now operate from another site but individual enthusiasts still use Barton with their own aircraft which include microlights and there is also considerable business charter traffic due to the convenience of the airfield’s proximity to Manchester.
“Aviation Family Fun Day and Aircraft Fly-In Event” which now forms the “Manchester Airshow”.
Emergency Services For quite some years Barton has been the base for helicopters providing a number of vital services. The Greater Manchester Police Air Support Unit operate helicopters from the airfield 24 hours a day throughout the year. The North West Air Ambulance Service, a registered charity, base helicopters at Barton to provide emergency medical aid to much of the north west.
City Heliport In 2011 the “City Heliport” opened to provide a purpose built facility for a growing commercial demand. Offices, a Conference Room and a dedicated Passenger Lounge plus re-fuelling facilities, complemented by the existing airport make the Heliport very popular. Unlike the fixed-wing aircraft facility it operates at night for the emergency services with portable lighting – and by arrangement for civil helicopters. Written by John Kirwin
Once called “Manchester Airport” Barton no longer flirts with alternatives, for its official name, according to the Civil Aviation Authority, is Manchester/Barton. In its earlier years Barton mounted air shows and flying displays when flying was still a novelty and these have been revived with the ON OUR DOORSTEP 31

The family owned and run business marks its 80th anniversary; 80 years since Alfred and Margaret Bent started to sell roses just yards away from the Centre’s current location. Since 1937 Bents has evolved from a small specialised plant based business to one of the country’s largest garden, home and leisure destinations. It has planned an extensive calendar of events, seasonal surprises and random acts of kindness to commemorate this impressive milestone, all anchored by a spectacular Summer Garden Party planned for the weekend of 7-9th July.

Spring Gardening
PLOTTING THIS SPRING There are many benefits of growing your own vegetables such as having control of how your crops are grown, access to FRESH produce, having a family hobby and getting out into green space and getting a regular dose of vitamin D! Whether you grow it in your back garden, or at a local allotment, read these essential seasonal growing tips from local “plotter” Geoff Hamilton. Warmer days, lighter nights and fewer rainstorms should be helping you get your crops in the ground. Potatoes will be 'chitting' now and you should be 'chitting' yours too, unless you are sowing them direct. However, if your site is too cold or wet and you are delaying planting still, egg trays recovered from a local café are ideal for chitting potatoes and the trays can be re-used to dry out your potatoes when you dig up your crops. Your shallots, onions and leeks will need to be planted now. Don't forget to pinch off the tufts at the top of your onions and shallots or the birds will lift them as quickly as you plant them. String a few old CDs over your plot and the birds might just give you a miss! Other vegetables that can be sown outdoors now include broccoli, cabbages, brussel sprouts and other brassicas; carrots, beetroots and other root vegetables; peas and broad beans. Lettuces and other salad crops can also be sown, but under cover if the weather is still cold. Indoors, it's not too late to plant chillies, peppers and tomatoes from seeds. Sow indoors for transplanting out later. Make sure your pots are clean - if they are being reused, new compost is preferable to re-using last years spent compost. You don’t want to risk infecting your new plants and depleting them of the 'feed-value'. Used soil may be deficient in the minerals that plants need. VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK
PEST CONTROL
You may want to mulch some of your open land to keep down weeds. If so, try laying pages from an old newspaper on the ground before applying your mulch, the paper will rot and old paper is cheaper than fabric, easier to tear around plants too. Make sure, if you haven't already got them going, you plant Nasturtiums (climbing and groundcover) to mix with your veggies on your plot; they are great for attracting black-fly away from your precious stuff and you can rub the black pest out. That's quite apart from them having wonderful colours; the flowers are great on salads and the seeds very tasty when roasted. Similarly, if you haven't grown several varieties of Marigold, you should get on with planting them between your crops. They are repulsive to several insects offer some environmentally positive protection. Again the petals make good eating and are great for colour and salad use. Don’t be too hasty...if the weather doesn't warm up or, dry up, it is worth delaying planting as our veggies are not happy sitting with cold feet in soggy ground. That's when they rot and it's such a disappointment. It’s better to have a smaller crop later, than a mess of mush to clear up! AN ALLOTMENT OF YOUR OWN?
The Salford Allotment Federation (SAF) are busy organising and preparing sites for letting at Harrop Fold (Walkden), Newhall Avenue (Peel Green), Beechfield (Swinton) and Blackleach (Walkden). If you are interested in a plot at any of these forthcoming sites contact the SAF secretary at carolyn.collins@me.com.
