Editor’s Note...
Welcome to our Spring issue! The last two months have disappeared in the blink of an eye. Life has been a juggling act, but thankfully the kids are back at school and there are a few more hours in the day to catch up with all those things that have been put on hold.

The roadmap out of lockdown has given us all some hope and it has been great to see local businesses getting ready to open again. We were all cautious when it was first announced, but there is a real buzz in the local air now. I can’t wait for life to get back to normal! Scarily, I am hitting the big 50 the same weekend St Ann’s Hospice is celebrating their 50th birthday. So I’m marking it by taking part in their iconic 10k Virtual Walk, 14-17 May. See p.8 for details, sign up and help them to raise vital funds too!

GEORGIA’S CHILDREN OF THE WORLD
Busy in Lockdown! Although things are finally improving, G-Festival as we know it, still hangs in the balance this year, but Georgia’s Children promise to bring some amazing events to you just as soon as its safe to do so. However, we certainly haven’t been idle through lockdown with the completion of Georgia’s Houses 9 and 10 in Cambodia - a ‘homestay resort’ in the Cambodian Countryside that offers an authentic life experience to both local and foreign tourists. All profits go to support the extremely poor children in the community - a truly sustainable project for the future! Our 10k 4 10k campaign was a massive success and raised over £11.5k for deprived local kids, including Heidi-Lou who we featured in our last article. Heidi now benefits from weekly Hydrotherapy sessions, with the extra support from local
businesses including Alfred Fraser Bathrooms, Briscombe Estate Agents and The Waterside in Monton. Our extreme sports hero Matt and his brother Phil are now planning another big challenge... The 3Peaks/2Wheels campaign will take place one week in June when the lads will climb the 3 peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon, AND they will be cycling between destinations to raise funds for further life changing procedures for Heidi-Lou and for JAC’s café at the Homestsay Resort in Cambodia in memory of 3 special friends of Georgia’s Children; Jon Ille, Alex Davies and Chantelle Scott. Please continue supporting us and look out for our future events; God Created Manchester, Ginger Fringe Comedy Night and the return of G-Fever! www.georgiaschildren.weebly.com

Manchester Virtual Walk Celebrate 50 years with us on our
The Manchester Midnight Walk will have a virtual twist this year, as organisers respond creatively to pandemic restrictions, adapting the event to ensure it can continue. The city is normally buzzing with excitement each year as more than a thousand participants take to the streets for the sponsored 10km walk in aid of St Ann’s Hospice patients. This year’s event was set to be bigger than ever before to mark the hospice’s 50th anniversary, but when Covid-19 restrictions led to the cancellation of the physical event, organisers had to think creatively about how supporters can still raise funds. Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive, said: “It’s really disappointing we can’t hold the Manchester Midnight Walk in the usual way – it’s been running for
fourteen years, and walkers have raised a staggering £2million for the hospice.” “But, supporter safety’s the most important thing to us, and our team have come up with a way that people can still take part in our birthday edition of the walk, just with a virtual twist.” People are being invited to sign up and take on the challenge to walk 10km over the hospice’s 50th birthday weekend from 14th to 17th May. Participants can choose to walk 10km in one go, or to split it into smaller chunks, and can decide to complete the distance whenever and wherever they wish. Participants will receive a free fundraising pack, t-shirt, and also an exclusive medal on completion. Sign up at www.mmwalk.org.uk or call 0161 498 3631

Two Brews COMMUNITY & HOMELESS SUPPORT
Our mission at Two Brews is to help whoever needs it - #oneaimonemission. We are a community and homeless support charity.
Dec20
In December 2020, a group of us (who had all volunteered for other outreach groups) decided to set up our own team to go out on the streets over the Christmas period...and Two Brews was born! One part of our work is to coordinate outreach teams who go out every night and some mornings, supporting homeless people. The teams take hot meals and drinks as well as essentials like toiletries, warm clothes and sleeping aids for cold weathers. As well as providing these resources, a key part of our service is signposting and supporting people to specialised services who can help them further. We also offer community support, welcoming anyone who may be facing financial hardship or adverse circumstances. Families or individuals can reach out to our team for food parcels, furniture or

clothing donations. We have aided many families this year already and will continue to do so :) We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of people. Since we launched, we’ve received tremendous support. People who have given up their time to join outreach teams, cook meals, deliver parcels, pick up resources. People who have donated via our Amazon wish list, gifted food and warm clothing and have spread our message to raise our profile. Lee Mossop, Salford Red Devils Rugby Captain, has recently chosen Two Brews as his nominated charity for his testimonial match. We are really excited to work further with Lee in the coming months! ELSIE MULLINEUX L
ocal historian, Elsie Mullineux passed away just after Christmas at the grand age of 102. Along with husband Frank, Elsie laid the foundations for the appreciation of the local history of Salford, particularly their beloved Worsley. She had a teaching career of over 40 years within Salford. Both wrote many books, gave numerous talks and encouraged others. They made a huge impact and many individuals and societies around today derive from the dedication of Frank and Elsie. Her achievements include aiding the restoration of the Lady Harriet memorial in Walkden, helping the acquisition of the John Gilbert painting for Salford Museum, promoting the building of a replica of the Lady Bourke clock they were always active in the community.

Business Feature
planning for the Future Will and Probate Services are a specialist paralegal law firm who deal exclusively with the issues that concern us all in later life, Will Writing, Probate and Estate Planning are at the core of our services and since 2005 we have advised thousands of clients in the country. Everyone needs to have the right Will in place, yet most people leave the future of their assets to chance. Equally Lasting Powers of Attorney are a cornerstone of later life planning, but many people have made no provision for them to manage their affairs if they become sick or lose capacity. If you have suffered a bereavement our Probate services are a cost-effective alternative to using a solicitor or bank to deal with the estate. We take the pressure off and always work to an understandable fixed fee. As we get older, we naturally tend to become richer so the right planning for Inheritance Tax and care provision needs to be put in place, yet again most people will leave this fundamental planning undone.
18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
We also deal with the Court of Protection if a relative has lost capacity and can offer a professional and low-cost estate administration and probate service if you have suffered a bereavement. Funeral plans can be an important part of wealth planning in later life and we offer a selection from the biggest providers in the UK. Call Will and Probate Services today and get your later life plan in place. During these difficult times we are also offering the opportunity to take instructions from our clients via secure video link or over the telephone. Could you unlock the cash from your home for a better retirement?
If you’re 55 and over and own your own home, it could hold the key to securing a more comfortable future.
Every year thousands of people are releasing tax-free cash from their homes to spend on the things they’ve always wanted - from holidays and home improvements to treating family or simply giving their retirement finances a boost. Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage which is a loan secured against your home. Equity release will reduce the value of your estate and may affect your entitlement to means-tested benefits.
You will need to take legal advice before releasing equity from your home as Lifetime Mortgages and Home Reversion plans are not right for everyone.

Legal Advice
BUSINESS INTERRUPTION INSURANCE AND COVID The effects of COVID on businesses forced to remain closed have been devastating to many. A recent court case has given a glimmer of hope for some businesses who have successfully been able to claim under the terms of their business interruption insurance policies. Those that have been successful broadly fall into two categories. The wording of each policy is key to the success or otherwise of each claim: 1. Notifiable Disease
The claims that have been successful are those where the policy documents refer to the government definition of ‘notifiable disease’ which changes as and when diseases such as COVID arise and COVID is now stated to be one.

All work guaranteed • Fully insured
Many policies however name the diseases that businesses affected by them can make a claim for losses and those unfortunately are unable to claim unless of course COVID is stated, which invariably it is not. 2. Prevention of Access
Successful claims are where the policy provides for payment for prevention of access to the business premises due to the actions or advice of a government or local authority due to an emergency which is likely to endanger life or property. Many policies however simply provide for cover for denial of access purely for damage to property in the vicinity of the premises which prevents or hinders the use of, or access to, the premises and again businesses with insurance with this wording are unable to make a claim for losses incurred as a result of COVID. The lesson for us all is to ensure that we read and fully understand the terms and conditions of all our insurances as there may be limitations that impact on us hugely. GMP SALFORD NORTH WEST:
Community Priorities this Spring have not had an increase in Burglaries compared to last year, in fact there has been a slight move over towards vehicle interference and theft from motor vehicles, again nothing to be too concerned about at this stage. There have been some good arrests by colleagues of well-known individuals. We will continue to proactively target this crime type. 3) OFF ROAD BIKE THEFT We are seeing an increase in offences involving off road bikes on the walk ways and open land. We have proactive operations planned and will be employing numerous tactics to target these offences. We’re also working with partners to see what preventative measures can be put in place.
How you can help?
H Policing Team!
ello from all in your local Neighbourhood
Over the last few months we have been busy tackling local issues and making the communities safer for you. We‘ve been proactively patrolling the looplines and tackling ASB and violent crime.
Our current priorities are as follows: 1) ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR (ASB) including knife related crime. There has been a slight rise in ASB of late, which will be down to a mixture of children home schooling, the nights starting to get lighter and weather a little better. These have been on local parks and areas such as the Ellesmere Centre. We have updated our patrol plan and will be conducting proactive operations throughout the month - keep an eye out for updates regarding our results. 2) BURGLARIES As you know we continue to focus on Burglaries as a team priority. I want to reassure you that we 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Continue to report crime and suspicious activity to the Police. There is still a lot of sharing of such behaviour within social media groups, which is not being brought to the attention of the Police. We need all this information to allow us to have a good intelligence picture and plan our response. Reports need to be made via: GMP website: www.gmp.police.uk Live chat service on the same website Dialling 101 Anonymously via Crime Stoppers at www.crimestoppers.org.uk 999 in an emergency
Good news... We had some excellent arrests in February; we arrested a male on the loopline after he was seen firing an air rifle, and another for driving dangerously on the linear walkway. 5 Mistakes to avoid when designing your new kitchen The kitchen is the heart of many homes; it’s where we cook, eat, entertain and socialise. So for many of us, getting the opportunity to design a brand new kitchen is a dream. However, if you decide to come up with the designs without a professional's aid, you are going to want to make sure you don't make these five common blunders! Don't forget the splashback! The splashback is perhaps the most aptly named area of the kitchen. It does exactly what it says on the tin, acting to protect your fine kitchen tiles, or painted walls from the sometimes messy nature of cooking.
Never underestimate its importance, and in my humble opinion, don't go cheap. The finish and material are just an important decision as those of your tiles or countertop. There are a huge array of splashbacks available, from marble to metal, so whatever the style of your kitchen, you'll probably be able to find something that fits. Kitchen islands aren’t for every kitchen They may be one of the most desirable additions to any kitchen these days; however, not every space is going to suit one. Kitchen islands are a great way to increase your preparation area, but if space is limited, squeezing in an island can turn a decent sized kitchen into the opposite.
Either come to peace that this kitchen won't have an island, or opt for one of the more compact, spacesaving models with plenty of fitted storage. Wall space is your secret weapon Do not underutilise your wall space in a kitchen,
particularly a smaller one – it can be your greatest asset. While it's tempting to focus all of your energy on planning countertops and appliances, wall space in your kitchen is your secret weapon. In a narrow galley kitchen, well-utilised walls can become an extension of your worktops, as well as increasing storage capacity. Think wall-mounted rails to hang cutlery, pans and colanders. If your space has high ceilings, build up and use elevated units to display prized glassware that's rarely used. The golden triangle is the real deal Many of you will have heard of the golden triangle; it refers to the space between (apparently) the 3 most used appliances in the kitchen – the cooker, the sink, and the fridge. Poor workflow planning can leave you with an impractical kitchen that turns cooking into chaos.
Ideally, you want these appliances to be no more than 3ft apart from each other. For a more modern take, why not the golden square? And throw the bin into the mix too. Don’t forget about the boiler! Unless you have a dedicated utility room, chances are your boiler will be situated in your kitchen. Bulky and usually unattractive, it's important to find as elegant a solution as possible to hide it away, while making sure it’s still accessible for maintenance. A fitted cupboard is usually the best option, ideally located on an exterior wall so the vent has the shortest possible length to travel. SPRINGTIME AT THE ALLOTMENTS by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer
Despite the lockdown, we’ve continued ‘plotting’ and this spring we have all sorts of plans. We couldn’t raise funds last year with our usual summer open-day, but thanks to anonymous donations from neighbouring plotholders, we will have enough seeds and compost to see us through the summer! Jackie has been very busy and already planted 97 peas, 200 white onions and shallots and germinated 50 Red Baron onions to plant out later. So there should be plenty of peas to harvest in the autumn, and an abundance of onions for pickling and giving to friends and family. Our last year’s parsnips were enormous so, we have planted this year’s crop already and hope to do even better ready for Christmas. We have 3 varieties of seed potatoes chitting this year. Last year’s crop was hit by a late frost so we will be

delaying planting a little to avoid the risk of crop damage. All of our fruit bushes are bursting into life and we have high hopes for our gooseberry bushes that were infested by a nasty moth last year. We planted another 2 redcurrant bushes and hope they will be as prolific as those we already have! The pandemic has continued to encourage prospective plotholders to apply for an allotment and the Salford Allotment Federation(SAF) has carried on talking to the Council about finding new sites and increasing the number of plots. The Council and its staff have been very willing to help and to co-operate, but financial constraints and Government policy makes it very hard for them to assist, despite the obvious health benefits - mental, physical and social. The SAF and the National Allotment Society (NAS), are both trying to convince Central Government to review and alter its stance on allotment policy and funding.

Why NOW is the perfect time to ADVERTISE LOCALLY People are shopping locally more than ever before Over the last year, the way we live and shop has dramatically changed. Working from home and home-schooling has kept us - and our spending LOCAL. We’ve become more community focussed and are keen to support our local independent businesses through these challenging times. At the end of 2020, Visa released key findings from its study carried out in partnership with Cebr (Centre for Economic & Business Research). They found 3 in 5 shoppers were worried independent businesses would not survive, 4 in 5 said they were shopping local as much as, or more than before the pandemic. n 54% of Brits surveyed said it’s important to them to shop locally because they know how much their custom means.
n 43% said they get a boost of happiness when they support local shopkeepers.
n 49% of consumers believe that local businesses contribute to their community by employing local people, making the area into a nicer place to live (39%) and keeping it vibrant and buzzing (38%).
Similarly, Mastercard found 66% of shoppers in the UK are now more likely to shop in their local communities than they were a year ago. They have a new found appreciation of their communities and local shops since of Covid-19. 49% of those surveyed said their increased love for shopping local is to help local communities bounce back. If you are a local business owner, it’s never been more important to advertise locally, with more people opting to buy local, restrictions on how far we can travel and having a ‘captive’ audience at home. Promote your business to your local community online, via social media, with leaflet drops or in magazines such as this. Maximise the opportunity and goodwill of the local residents to support you.
