Grenache raises over £3,000 for Cancer Research Ray Flynn, a very good friend of ours here at Grenache Restaurant, was recently diagnosed with stomach and liver cancer. His daughter, Helene, ran in July’s Race For Life to raise funds for Cancer Research and to support Helene we held a Charity Evening on 7th June.

Huss Abbas presenting the cheque for £3100 to Helene Flynn.

We had 2 weeks to beg, steal (well, not quite!) or borrow everything we needed to run a successful event. Our thanks to our suppliers: Pendrills, Morgenrot, Bookers, Grundy’s Fish, Grundy’s Fruit & Veg and Bates Fruit & Veg who all sponsored the food courses; to our friends who gave us prizes and finally to all our staff who donated their time and made the night a huge success.

On the evening, every seat was filled and guests were treated to a champagne reception, 4 courses of food and entertainment from our host and owner Huss Abbas! We also held a secret auction where our chef was “bought” for £500 to cook for the lucky winner, plus a free MOT & service raised £70 and a signed Man City shirt another £170. Even a date with Huss was auctioned off for £150! Raffle prizes included a bottle of whisky signed by Tony Blair, a voucher for holistic treatments, a bouquet of fresh flowers, £50 cash, £40 in lottery tickets, £50 from Shuffs Fashion, meals in Isis, The Basin and Sugos, and a signed Bolton Wanderers shirt. In total we raised just over £3,000. A full list of prize winners is now displayed on our notice board.

St Marks summer Carnival

In July, pupils of St. Mark’s CE Primary School enjoyed a traditional style Summer Carnival. Organised by the PTA and assisted by a band of willing teachers and volunteers, the day was a huge success, raising c.£1,800. The money will go towards a climbing structure at the school, which will hopefully be built over the summer holidays. There was a vast array of stalls and activities including: Go Karts, bouncy castle, high striker, hook-a-duck, lucky dip, catch-a-fish, badge making, sand art, face painting, various tombolas, penalty shoot-out, golf hole in one, wellie wangle, raffle and even a clown! For the hungry, Lars Zollinger’s Hog Roast and the Beer & Pimms tent were a popular choice, as well as the Krispy Kreme doughnuts, cakes and sweet stall.

Parvin Wendy asurer PTA Tre

Pupils and parents all got involved, donating the tombola items including teddies, jam jars filled with treats, wine, chocolate and other gifts, and by baking delicious cakes & biscuits. Every child also decorated a flag to make a 75 metre length of bunting which was hung all around the stalls. A few activities & prizes were sponsored by local businesses: The Marriott, Roberts Building & Developments, Autoserv Boothstown, Corporate Paranormal, Veloset Cycle Computers and On Our Doorstep! So what’s next? The PTA at St Marks are already planning an Autumn Fashion Show, Christmas Fair and even a Summer Ball in July 2012, amongst other events. A busy school year ahead!

TWINKLETOES Izzy’s twinkletoes appeal

My name is Izzy and I’m nearly four. I’ve got cerebral palsy in my legs, so I can’t walk very well. When we’re at nursery, sometimes we have to do dancing which I enjoy, but because my legs are stiff I can’t put my feet flat on the floor, I have to just watch. Mummy and Daddy have found a doctor in America who has done a lot of operations so he can put my feet flat. If we get enough money I would like to go to America to see if he can fix my legs.

Rise in car accident claims during holiday season It may be hard to believe that most traffic accidents occur during the warmer summer months. Whilst winter weather may bring a wide variety of challenging road conditions, from ice and snow, research shows that it is exactly drivers’ decreased attention to road safety during summer that contributes to the increased number of incidents. It’s estimated that around seven million people make car journeys for UK holidays during bank holidays and the summer months. This high number of motorists, combined with cars crammed full of people and luggage, means road traffic accidents are more likely. Summer is also the time for surface dressing as highways authorities improve local roads by laying tar covered with loose chippings. But while the work is necessary, it is the curse of motorists, causing damage to paintwork and headlamp glasses. Rick of ChipsAway in Worsley said: “If you are unfortunate enough to have your car paintwork damaged by loose chippings or have a bump or scrape whilst travelling this summer – it does not necessarily mean you have the hassle and expense of claiming on your insurance to get it repaired. 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

ChipsAway is the UK’s leading brand in minor automotive paintwork repairs, fixing damage such as scratches, bumper scuffs and kerbed alloys within a matter of hours and at a fraction of the cost of traditional body shop repair methods.” For further information please visit ChipsAway at www.chipsaway.co.uk or contact 0161 790 1755

Plans unveiled for new Moorside High School The staff, parents, pupils and governors of Moorside High School are delighted at the recent news that the school is going to have a rebuild. A £25m campus style school will be developed on the playing fields opposite the present buildings. The campus will incorporate Moorside Primary and Moorside High School. This building accommodating ages 3-16 will be the only such facility in Salford. In fact this style of ‘all through’ school is almost unique within the country and will be a focus for education specialists across the UK. The state of the art facilities were originally destined as an amalgamated 1,350 pupil high school for The Swinton and Moorside High Schools. Following The Swinton’s application to become an Academy, the Council made the following decisions:

To stop the closure process on Swinton and Moorside High Schools. To refuse the application from the Salford Learning Trust to develop a joint high school for 1,350 pupils To develop a new Moorside High School for 1,050 pupils on a site with Moorside Primary which will cater for 630 pupils.

Artists impression of school from Dean's Road

12 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The news that Moorside High School was to be rebuilt and remain open has been greeted with excitement and relief that the “Building Schools for the Future” programme has been saved. There was a concern that in granting leave for Swinton to become an Academy the BSF programme may be halted and the money would not be allocated to Salford. The Local Authority have worked hard to secure the funding and have backed Moorside High School for a new build. This is excellent news for the school and the communities of Worsley and Swinton. Mr Ogden, Headteacher of Moorside High School said:"This is what the staff and pupils of Moorside High School have been waiting for, world class buildings to match the outstanding teaching and learning that already takes place. It is going to be an exciting time for everyone involved with the school."

By the end of the summer term, parents and potential parents will have had the opportunity to see the plans and meet with the Leadership Team. Updated plans and drawings will be posted on the school website. If you would like to see further details as they happen then visit www.moorsidehigh.co.uk. The New Moorside High is set to open in September 2013.

A worthy charity to support:-

WOOD STREET MISSION ...helping local children and families since 1869

Wood Street Mission, a local children’s charity, offers practical help to families affected by poverty. We provide free parcels of excellent quality children’s and young adult clothing, bedding, toys, children’s books and items of baby equipment. All the families we help are referred to us from their support worker (health visitor, social worker etc.), who confirm the family’s needs. The families all live in Manchester and Salford. Our Clothing Project runs throughout the year. In addition we provide new toys for children and a food hamper for each family at Christmastime.

If you have any donations which could help a local family in need, please ring our office on 0161 834 3140 to book a collection. We pick up regularly in the Worsley/Salford area. Alternatively you can drop off donations at our premises at 26 Wood Street, Manchester M3 3EF, Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm. Last year alone we helped almost 14,000 local people. Demand for help continues to rise so every donation or £1 given really will make a huge difference to a local child’s life. If you’d like to see our work first hand please contact the office about our monthly tours. Visit our website www.woodstreetmission.org.uk for more information.

With 50 acres of landscapes gardens, a 1,000 acre Deer Park, there is plenty of space to roam, run wild and release some energy! A particular favourite is the Adventure Playground with over 30 “rides” from treehouses to zip wires. If that’s not enough, visit the working farm, ride on the tractor and the small funfair rides. There are a few snack and ice cream vendors, plus a cafe but that gets very busy. It’s best to take a picnic and avoid the painful queuing for food. Take some outdoor toys and the kids can entertain themselves! Tel: 01625 374 400 | www.tattonpark.org.uk Ashley Road, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

MOSI, MANCHESTER The Museum of Science and Industry is fun and educational. Even from as young as 4 yrs old, it’s a great day out. Visit the Power Hall and experience the working engines. There are interactive exhibits dotted about, craft activities/experiments to try, plus comical plays being performed to engage the kids.

By far, the favourite gallery is “Experiment!”, where you can try out interactive experiments. It occupies them for ages and is a great learning experience. On top of that there are story-telling sessions, a 4D cinema, steam train rides and more displays with interactive exhibits. Most of it is free, and the cafe serves pretty nice food as well! Tried & Tested Elysium Hair & Beauty Salon The Salon Owner Stacey Brogan, at a youthful 26 years of age, has created a chic and successful hair & beauty salon. Elysium opened in December 2010 on Worsley Road. Stacey’s mission was to create a high class, top quality, professional and friendly salon, offering a “one-stop shop” with treatments from top to toe. Hair services include:- Hair cutting & styling, extensions, colouring and straightening. Body treatments:- St Tropez tans, make-up, facials, massage and Bio Sculpture gels. Elysium is made up of a happy team of eight highly trained and experienced stylists and therapists. Business is going really well with a healthy mix of existing clients who moved with the staff to Elysium, new clients and passing trade (thanks to their great location just off the East Lancs). The salon has a French Baroque style with a modern twist. Downstairs is a beautiful, spacious hair salon, whilst upstairs there are three beauty treatment rooms. All are decorated and equipped to high standards and with some unique pieces of furniture. We visited Elysium to try a few treatments:St tropez spray tan

Louise had two applications of spray tan and was given aftercare advice after her treatment. The tan dried in a just few minutes. When Louise washed it off the next day, she was left with an even colour with a real golden glow - perfect for her skin type! Hair Cut & Style

Louise had an initial consultation and was offered some “Look Books” which had some great styles for differing lengths of hair. Louise chose one and asked to keep her length but add texture and body to her hair. With volumising shampoo and conditioner, 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

a great cut and blow-dry, some volumising mousse, the stylist achieved exactly what Louise was looking for - lots of movement and Louise was thrilled with the result.

BEFORE

AFTER

Eyelash Extensions

Louise opted for thicker lashes, the other option being longer. The express treatment was very relaxing and took about 45 mins. After the first layer, Louise opted for another layer and was really pleased with the results:“My lashes look very full and glamorous!” The therapist gave her aftercare advice and encouraged to call if I she had any problems. The lashes last 2-3 weeks. Hot Stone Massage

My Hot Stone back, neck and shoulders massage was very comforting. My therapist was very confident and applied a good firm pressure ( just what I needed!). I definitely felt a much deeper effect with the hot stones. It’s a great warming and relaxing treatment one which I hear is not easy to get right. Bio Sculpture Gel Nails

A quick and easy nail treatment that strengthens and promotes the growth of natural nails. It dries in 2 mins under a UVA light, so no fear or smudging! I had a French manicure finish with a touch of sparkle. The finished effect was great, really glossy and still perfect a week on and has withstood many a trampling by my 2 boys! A great summer look and should last a few weeks.

Hypnosis...the most effective way to Stop Smoking Adele from MindMasters Hypnotherapy explains why it is SO tough, and the best technique to help you QUIT! It is well known that the majority of smokers dream of giving up the wicked weed but struggle, some their entire life. With them heading out to buy the endless nicotine replacement products or opting for the good old fashioned cold turkey is it any wonder why so many people fail?

consciously that you want to quit, you are fighting a difficult battle because it is tucked away deep in your subconscious. This is why hypnotherapy is extremely powerful as it deals with the subconscious.

The Addiction

I have helped hundreds of people quit over the last 8 years. Each one of them amazed at how easy it was, and as an added bonus with the special advanced technique I use, you don’t gain any weight afterwards!

Nicotine replacement products wean you off the nicotine until you can go it alone. However, nicotine leaves the body approx 72 hours after extinguishing your last cigarette, so if it’s only about nicotine addiction shouldn’t you be smoke free after 3 days of cold turkey? WRONG! Every smoker knows this is not the case. Smoking is a mental addiction (or habit), NOT a physical one. The habit lies in the subconscious mind, so no matter how much you say

90% success rate & no weight gain!

So, if you are one of the millions who wish you could quit for good then try a different approach and free yourself from the nicotine trap! For more information, contact Adele at:-

Don’t stunt the growth of your child by Jonathan Gaul, Swinton Physiotherapy Summertime brings great opportunity for kids to get outdoors and get active, and normally an increase in the amount of bumps and scrapes. While this is a normal part of growing up and we expect children to heal quickly, it is important to pick up early on anything that may cause problems in later life. In childhood the bones are soft and the supporting soft tissue ie. tendon and ligaments are stronger, which means damage normally occurs in a bone before the surrounding soft tissue when subject to force. Bear this in mind if your GP ever describes a child’s wrist or ankle injury as a ‘ligament sprain’. Particular caution is required when there is possibility of fracture near the end of a bone where growth occurs. If the fracture is not

detected early and aligned properly there is the risk of difference in limb length or bony angulation. As children enter their teens and become heavily involved in sport they face similar risks but in a less obvious form. With repeated use and loading there is the chance of an overuse injury, which is much more serious than in adults as it can affect the growth sites. Main sites of risk are the heel, front of the knee, and the front of the hip/pelvis. With rest from the aggravating activity, symptoms normally settle and sports can be resumed. Pay attention to any repeated complaints from your child, and seek early assessment from a physiotherapist.

Dancers, Gymnasts, Firemen, Astronauts... Most households will have one in some size or shape. Don't let pain or injury prevent your child from living out their dream. Get good advice and treatment early at:-

Food tips to help your child succeed at school by Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express With children heading off to school this month, how can you give them the best possible nutritional basis from which to have a happy and productive time? The key is a well-balanced, healthy diet full of wholefoods, lean protein, good fats and lots of fruit and veg. Wholefoods provide children with the energy they need to play and learn. Protein is important for growth and good brain function. Oily fish contains essential fatty acids that are key to helping cognitive function and avoiding dyslexia. B vitamins, found in a wide range of foods including cereals, potatoes and proteins are also critical for effective brain function. On the other hand, processed carbohydrates and sugar have bad effects on a child’s attention span, focusing ability and activity levels. They can cause hyperactivity, followed by tiredness, irritability and poor concentration.

Make breakfast the start to the day

Research shows that children who eat breakfast have better test scores, behave better and exhibit less hyperactivity than those who don’t. The effect is best where children have low GI breakfasts, as these are more satisfying and reduce the likelihood of energy lows and tiredness in the mid-morning. A good low GI breakfast could combine wholemeal toast, eggs, tomatoes, peanut butter, fruit and milk. Wholemilk is a 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP

valuable source of calcium, which along with the Vitamin D found in eggs, will help to build strong bones. Citrus fruits and berries provide vitamin C, for a strong immune system to help ward off the inevitable coughs and colds. Be careful when choosing breakfast cereals: most commercial cereals are high GI. Look instead for those that are based on oats, bran or barley.

Snacking can be good If your child’s energy still dips in the morning, then provide a healthy snack – an apple, wholegrain crackers, nuts, or cheese snacks, instead of chocolate or crisps.

School lunch or packed lunch?

Teach your child how to make healthier choices and to avoid fast food, greasy pizzas and chips that will cause an energy surge and slump later. Alternatively, prepare a packed lunch; hearty soups, wholemeal sandwiches with chicken, tuna or egg, fruit and yoghurt are all great choices. Involve your child in choosing the lunch box and its contents, and this, along with their desire to eat up quickly to get out and play, will help ensure it gets eaten.

After school snacks A light after-school snack is a great way to refuel your child's body before play or study time. A handful of nuts and an apple is perfect, or maybe a snack tray of vegetables and dips.

Worsley Delph: Gateway to the Underworld Proposed World Heritage Site Worsley has many interesting relics of the past, but few compare with The Delph - a place so remarkable it has been proposed as a candidate for status as a World Heritage Site (a classification that includes the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China!) What on earth could this nondescript small bay of a canal, reaching into a quarry, possibly have in common with those famous feats of architecture and civil engineering? Certainly not size or majesty; no palace or castle, no fossils of ancient creatures. The Delph can show none of these things, for its astonishing achievement and its unique contribution to technology lie deep underground - an amazing 52 miles of navigable canals. The Birth of the Bridgewater Canal Back in the middle of the 18th century the booming towns of south Lancashire were creating the Industrial Revolution and needed cheap fuel to power a host of industries. Worsley had that fuel in abundance - coal under the Duke of Bridgewater’s estates, and he was determined to provide it, in the first instance, to Manchester. The problem was transportation, which at that time was horse and cart on primitive roads. However, the Duke was not only imaginative, he was inspired in his choice of men to get jobs done.

Going Underground It had been realised from the outset that transport bottlenecks would still exist at the source of the coal, despite the Canal. The coal pits were scattered all over the Bridgewater Estate, along a northward trending “spine”, with lateral outriders, ending near Bolton and were all underground. Enter the resourceful Gilbert, with another audacious plan - why not take the Canal itself to the coalfaces? Consider, this was 250 years ago and Gilbert was proposing nothing less than tunneling to connect multiple mines in an underground chain. Not only that, he intended the system would deliver a threefold benefit:- drainage for all the mines; ventilation and a complete transportation system of canals to the outside world for the coal they produced. It would be done with picks, shovels, perhaps a little gunpowder and candlepower. The people who would do it were men, women and children as young as 5 years old.

The solution, agreed with the Duke’s Agent John Gilbert, was to build the first “true” canal in Britain, which carries the Duke’s name to this day.

You can see where they commenced this monumental task. The Delph, the ancient quarry (“place of delving”) was carved from the sandstone hillside over 1,000 years ago. It supplied the stone for the church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eccles, founded in 1111. Now, 750 years later, it was to be delved again to serve the Duke’s purpose. The stone has the interesting characteristic that it hardens when it weathers but beyond the weathered surface it is easy to work. Thus it yielded easily to the tunnelers.

Started in 1759, the great engineer James Brindley was employed to build the Canal for his patron and Manchester was reached in 1765.

Two parallel tunnels were dug about 50 yards apart, which you can still see from the road bridge. After 500 yards underground the two converge into the single navigable

channel that forms the “spine” of the entire system. Initially the miners aimed for pits that were in the locality of what is now the East Lancs Road, but their first major target was the “Ellesmere” pit at Walkden. Wherever they went they encountered water - lots of it, particularly when they reached the mines. As they proceeded, they discovered coal seams, exploited them and a lateral tunnel canal would be dug to service them. So the “branches” grew, connecting outlying pits in what was to eventually resemble a tree system. As the land rose, from Walkden towards Farnworth, a means had to be found to maintain the canal concept and yet again Gilbert had the answer. Further Technological Innovations Gilbert conceived the idea of dry slopes, that would link canals whenever a major uplift in elevation was required. Above and below the slopes would be level canals and boats would proceed to the head and foot of such slopes. Using a system of blocks and pulleys the weight of a descending loaded boat would provide the power to haul an empty boat up to the next level. Another Gilbert innovation was the installation of sluices. These would be closed, to dam water, and then released in sequence, creating a travelling wave that would help propel loaded boats towards the exit. Yet another inspiration was probably the first known application of “containerisation”, with coal being loaded into boxes within boats and then transhipped by crane into the waiting narrow boats in the Delph. The Human Achievement These ingenious ideas and new technologies VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

tend to overshadow the “blood, sweat and tears” of the human achievement that these underworld canals represent. Every inch of their 52 miles was hand-hewn from the rock, huge chambers were created, and most of the propulsion power for the “Starvationner” boats (so-called due to their exposed ribs) that travelled the depths was provided by human hands, knees and feet. Lying flat on their backs, with faces only inches from the tunnel roof, men women and children would use their limbs to push the boats along with only a candle for comfort and the constant fear of gas explosion or cave-in. The End of an Era These distribution methods continued until 1889, when an overland tram network was established to the productive southern pits of the coalfield. These later gave way to trains which shunted wagons loaded with coal to two chutes on the canal - one at Boothstown Basin, one at Worsley, which discharged into barges heading for Barton Power Station. However, it was not the end of the active life of the underground canals. They still had a role in drainage and ventilation of active mines and were regularly inspected by the National Coal Board (using a “Starvationner” boat in the traditional way to avoid cave-ins) well into the 1960’s. Their present condition can only be guessed at, but judging by the constant water flow from the tunnel entrances at the Delph, they are still fulfilling one of their purposes.
