Salford Choral Society: Residents with a passion for music! Some 100 enthusiastic singers meet every Wednesday evening to make music Performance at Royal Northern College of Music, Mar12 together as Salford Choral Society. Founded in 1947, we are one of the North West's leading choirs, performing five concerts a year with professional orchestras and soloists. Kathy McNaughton, Secretary of the Society says, “One of the things I researched when considering moving to Worsley was nearness to a high standard choir, and I’m still enjoying the quality and variety of music 24 years later.” Jill Lymer from Boothstown and Helen Randle from Monton, joined in the last couple of years. Jill says she loved singing, but had felt too shy to join a choir. Having seen an article on the

Society in the Salford Advertiser, Tuning up! Helen, Kathy, Arnold, Audrey and Jill she plucked up courage. “Now I really enjoy singing with the choir and wish I’d done it long ago!” Roe Green residents Audrey and Arnold Allcock have both given their time to the running of the Society. Arnold was Treasurer for the last ten years, and Audrey has organised the choir on the platform for concerts. New members with commitment and enthusiasm are always welcome. Rehearsals start in September for Mozart’s Requiem, which will be performed at the Royal Northern College of Music on 3rd November. Anyone interested in joining can contact Diane Dunning on 01706 670251 or email membership@salfordchoral.org.uk. For further information on the choir and future events visit www.salfordchoral.org.uk.

Salford Deaf Children’s Society: Supporting local deaf and hearing impaired children SDSCS visit to Eccles Fire Station Jun’12

Formed in 2008, Salford Deaf Children's Society recognised there was a gap in social and emotional support for deaf children and their families. The group aims to offer support to each other in a fun environment for all deaf and hearing impaired children and their families throughout Salford, who otherwise would not get an opportunity to meet. The Society is uniquely run by both parents of deaf children and professionals who work with hearing impaired children. A Youth Group is held twice a term at the Emmanuel Centre, Salford, plus a range of other events. Recent activities include a residential weekend at a Children's Farm, a kayaking and canoeing experience, a trip to Alton Towers as

Fashion Savvy Mum opens new Boutique in Worsley Local mum of two, Joanne Ditchett, has always had a passion for clothes and fashion. Having studied Fashion & Design, she knew she wanted to set up her own business. In September 2011, Joanne started running clothes parties at people’s homes. By Christmas, she decided to set up her own shop and within months “Le Boutique” was open in March 2012! Inspiration for her range came from her own wardrobe. “I literally took the labels off my clothes and contacted all the designers. There are restrictions on stores selling the same labels in the same area, but I was lucky and I only missed out on one or two of the ones I wanted”. Joanne’s mum has been a major support throughout, visiting designers up and down the country and helping Joanne choose stock on a weekly basis.

Le Boutique caters for a variety of people and occasions, stocking Prom dresses, casual day and evening wear, to bespoke hand-made items. “Running a shop and understanding what sells is a steep learning curve. We change stock every week, buying just a handful of each item. So you will always find something new and know not every mum in school will be wearing the same! We are trying to create more awareness about the shop. Since we opened, we’ve had 2 Ladies Nights which have been a major success.” Le Boutique is open Mon-Sat, offers online shopping and runs fashion shows at charity and PR events. “It’s fantastic having my own shop. Everything I wear is from Le Boutique! We get new customers every day who look unsure as they walk in, but 9/10 times they find what they want, look and feel great in their new clothes”.

SHINE

FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK A BREAST cancer survivor is urging people to unite through light and enter a unique night-time walking event. Cancer Research UK’s SHINE Manchester, which will take place on Saturday September 8, is now officially open for entry at www.shinewalk.org SHINE participants can choose to walk a full or half marathon night-time route, and decide to fund the area of cancer research closest to their hearts. Jo Jones will be taking part in the half marathon route for the second year running with her partner Ian.

Jo Jones, Barton Eccles

The 42-year-old, who is originally from Barton near Eccles, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2009 shortly after her 40th birthday, after finding a lump on her right breast. She underwent surgery to have the lump removed followed by four months of chemotherapy and then four weeks of radiotherapy treatment.

Jo, who recently qualified as a teacher, completed her treatment in August 2010 and now has annual check-ups. She took part in Shine last year to celebrate her recovery with a group of staff and students from Trafford College. Jo, who is now working in Chorlton, said: "I was devastated to be diagnosed with cancer but I had amazing support from my family and friends. I couldn’t have done it without them. “I would urge everyone to think about signing up for SHINE Manchester 2012 as it was a brilliant experience taking part last year and we are looking forward to the challenge once again in September.” This is the third year that the event has been held in Manchester and this time participants are being encouraged to illuminate themselves with light on the night, to symbolise bringing hope to the darkness of cancer. Together, they will take to the city streets in a fun and inspirational parade of light. Starting and ending at Old Trafford Football ground, the route will pass landmarks such as Albert Square and Cancer Research UK’s Paterson Institute. 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Nelson Laurencia, Cancer Research UK SHINE Event Manager, said: “We are calling on people to help light up the city on the night of September 8. By entering Shine and pledging to raise money for research, they will be helping to bring light to people affected by cancer.” Every hour, around four people are told they have cancer in the North West, and around 37,000 people are diagnosed in the region each year. But the good news is that, thanks to research, cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s. Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. This year, organisers hope 5,000 men and women will again choose to put their best foot forward and raise £1 million to support pioneering research. Shine participants can choose to support one of 12 different areas of scientific research, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and leukaemia. Or they can simply give their backing to Cancer Research UK’s overall work. To enter SHINE, or to sign up as a volunteer, visit www.shinewalk.org

GETTING IN SHAPE: Stuck in a rut, or don’t know where to start ? When it comes to exercise, most people do the same routine over and over again, with the expectation that their body will change. Whereas others don’t even start as they find little or no direction to help them achieve their goals. So whether you are currently stuck in a rut or want to get started, but just don’t know how, we want to help you. Simple Tips Weight loss for example; if you were to drink water with freshly squeezed lime throughout the day, your alkaline levels would increase to help you lose body fat and build muscle. If you were to complete a simple circuit of body weight exercise three to five times per week, you would increase your lean muscle tissue, which will ensure your burn more calories whilst at rest (when you do nothing). These are a couple of simple tips which are very easy to do, even in the comfort of your own home. You are what you eat! Quite literally, over the course of a year your body will pretty much renew itself with the ingredients that you put into it. Here at MU Fitness we are very well aware that nutrition plays a huge part in performance, results and recovery. In fact it’s about 70% what you eat and 30% what you do with it. With this in mind we are going to be running a course, offering wellness assessments and nutritional support to our clients who want to improve their “diet” (the food they eat) to improve their results and reach their goals.

sports performance and recovery programs. If it’s good enough for Beckham and Messi it’s good enough for us and we want to provide only the best for you. Achieve results with MU Fitness We offer a variety of services that will ensure you get exactly what you require to achieve results. These include 1-2-1 training, group sessions so you can train with friends, weight loss boot camps, nutritional advice and support, through to online programmes if your trying to find a solution with a hectic lifestyle. If you would like more information or to book a free Personal Training taster session, please contact us on 0161 300 3289 or at www.mufitness.com. Weight Loss Classes will be starting soon. Tales of Old Monton - Part 2

THE MONTON MAN WHO WEIGHED THE EARTH Who would credit that within the small orbit of Worsley, Monton and Eccles, a mere mile in radius, there have been so many intellectual giants of engineering, science and medicine? Not ordinary mortals, not transient “celebrities”, but people who became renowned on a world stage and helped make history. Many know about Brindley and Gilbert, the architects of the Bridgewater Canal, the first commercial navigation in the world. Others know of George Stephenson, his “Rocket” locomotive and the world’s first passenger railway from Manchester to Liverpool. But how many know of William Worrall Mayo, born in Eccles, a young doctor who emigrated to America in the 1840s and subsequently founded the now world-famous Mayo Clinic? And what about Sir Alliott Verdon-Roe? Born in Patricroft, he was one of the first pioneers of flight, both as an aviator and later as a builder of aircraft. He designed, built and flew the first all-British plane in 1909. His company AVRO built the Lancaster bomber of WW2 fame, the Shackleton, the Saunders-Roe Princess flying boats and the delta-winged jet bomber - the Vulcan. He was knighted for his lifetime achievements. How many readers might make mention of a man who was possibly the most visionary of all our local worthies? This man was born in 1852 in a cottage on Monton Road. The son of the minister of Monton Unitarian Church (Monton Green) - his name was John Henry Poynting. Young Poynting was a very bright lad. His intellectual horizons were unlimited by earthly bounds, he aspired to nothing less than knowledge of the Universe and what made it 18 ON OUR DOORSTEP

“tick”. He shone at school, progressed to further education at Owens College (now Manchester University) and thence to Cambridge University. At the extraordinarily young age of 26 he became a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge and then was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, Britain’s premier scientific body, as one of the most inspired physicists of the age. In 1880, still only 28 years of age, he was appointed Mason Professor of Physics at Birmingham University, in a city at that time, the powerhouse of the engineering world. In the following years, up to his death in 1914, Poynting was credited with many discoveries and contributions to the advancement of knowledge of the Universe. He authored many learned papers and named after him, as the discoverer, are the Poynting Vector and the Poynting Theorem. These latter deal with electromagnetism, in terms of Magnitude, Direction, Flow and Energy Conservation. In 1912, seeking to have Physics make sense to a wider audience, he co-authored a book “The Earth” - which demonstrated in simple terms how the planet’s shape, size, weight and rate of spin could be calculated. He built on the work of such eminent predecessors as Cavendish and arrived at a “weight” for our planet. Poynting is remembered with some rather large monuments, made by Nature rather than Man. He has a crater named after him on both the Moon and Mars! His father’s church still stands proudly at Monton Green and, just as proudly, it bears a blue plaque commemorating the son. Oh....the weight of the Earth? At its core, with all that mass pressing in from all around…... 6.6 sextillion tons… in short an awful lot of zeros (21 of them) give or take a ton or two!

i-Lipo : The intelligent alternative to liposuction i-Lipo™ is the latest in laser lipolysis, offering you a way to achieve inch loss and body contouring with no pain, no needles and no down time.

Read what Svelte Body clients say.... Helen, from Sale:“After only 4 treatments I woke up and thought - Hey, where’s my tummy gone?” When I broke my ankle I went up from size 810 to a good size 12. Despite dieting and exercising after recovering, I still struggled to fit into my clothes. I had a bit of stubborn fat that would just not budge. I loved my clothes and couldn’t afford to buy new ones so had to get back into them.

After just 6 treatments, I was well on my way. I now look better in my Body Con dress than ever before and don’t need my Suzanne & Trinny big pants! The treatment is noninvasive, pain & hassle free! Sessions last 50 minutes. The first 20 mins are spent lying relaxed on a bed with the laserpads placed on the target area – for me, my tummy. You don’t feel a thing. Then you spend 30 minutes on the exercise bike to burn off the contents of the fat cells that have just been released from your chosen area. The therapists are lovely and the time goes so fast when you’re having a good natter with someone who understands exactly how you feel. At the gym I struggle to spend 10 mins on one machine. Normally, when I lose weight it comes off my face and chest but never my tummy. With the iLipo you choose what area of your body you want to achieve the inch loss. If the cost puts you off trying it, then just think how much replacing your wardrobe would be. I was very sceptical of things like this before, but the proof is in the zip fastening and when that zip goes up, it is the best feeling in the world!

Linda, from Boothstown (Mar12):With only two weeks to my daughters wedding I tried on my outfit just to make sure everything matched and I was good to go. To my absolute horror and disgust the zip would not go up !!! My heart was pounding with a deep feeling of sick in my tummy. What was i going to do? Spend the next few days trekking around the shops of Manchester to find a new dress? The one I had and all its accessories cost me an arm and a leg as it was! Nightmare!! Out of total desperation I decided to give the ilipo a try. With only two weeks to the big day I was able to get 6 of my 8 treatments completed. After 4 treatments I noticed a considerable difference to my back area where the bra straps close the tricky bit where no matter how much dieting and exercise I do it doesn't seem to shift! The ilipo combined with 20 mins on the vibration plate meant by treatment no.6, my beautiful dress fit me perfectly once again and my family were saved the agony of me having to find a new dress!!

i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men and women.

our wedding day is one of the most amazing days of your life. In this issue, On Our Doorstep have teamed up with local wedding photographer, Zen Photographic, for an exciting creative bridal shoot. Together, with a passionate team of local wedding suppliers, we present some of the latest trends and inspiration for the forthcoming wedding season, helping to make your big day perfect. The backdrop selected for the shoot was the historic Ordsall Hall. Recently licensed for wedding ceremonies, it is Salford’s oldest wedding venue. Over 800 years old, it reopened in May 2011 after a £6.5m renovation project and has been restored back to full Tudor glory. It’s truly a stunning venue for a Wedding ceremony and the Hall also caters for drinks receptions and canapes.

WHAT’S HOT FOR 2012 As with fashion, wedding trends change every year. The hottest trends for 2012 is the colour. This year, Brides are choosing bright colour schemes that are unique and accent their venue, dress and flowers. Dresses are romantic and feminine - lace being one of the major trends for the year. Brides are opting for floor-length flowing dresses with combinations of overlaid soft fabrics, crystal studded bodices, lace sleeves, delicate ruffles and floral details. Satin still remains popular, giving the perfect silhouette of the wedding dress. Favoured colours are ivory, cream and champagne. For wedding bouquets, the majority are hand-tied with stems wrapped in satin ribbon, but the hottest new trend is Crystal Bouquets. Either adding a touch of glamour and sparkle to a floral bouquet, or a fully handmade crystal bouquet. 38 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Venue dressing and decoration has come on in leaps and bounds over these last few years. This year couples are opting for a more personal and unique touch to their wedding day, sometimes bringing in their own pieces. Also, centre pieces which match the general colour theme are becoming more popular. For wedding cakes, the in style is ‘couture’ style cakes which match details from the bride’s outfit, or decorative lacework and textile inspired textures. Colours are mainly whites and ivories but now with accents of brighter/darker colours (even black) to tie in with the overall colour scheme. Also favoured are multitiered cakes with different designs on each layer and tall cakes! A fantastic group of local suppliers have come together to demonstrate these trends showcase their services:-

Choosing Your Wedding Outfits:

Ask the experts by Rod Appleton, Proposals Bridalwear, Swinton Choosing the wedding gown, bridesmaids dresses and groom’s outfit, is a once-in-alifetime experience but can be a daunting prospect. Make it fun and simpler with the help from someone who has been through the process many times before. Seek guidance from an experienced Bridalwear Shop. A well established bridal shop will have dressed thousands of Bridal parties over the years and will share their expert knowledge with the eager couple. Allow enough time to make your big decisions. Ideally contact them 12-24 months before the wedding date. At the first appointment the bridal supplier should listen to the wedding couple’s ideas and dreams:- the type of wedding, venue, season, the numbers involved and even the available budget. When choosing the wedding dress, take at least one other person whose opinion you can really trust. The bridal shop should guide you through their range of dresses and outfits. Be open minded to their suggestions. Having a theme and colour scheme is very important when planning the bridesmaids dresses, flower-girls, men’s ties & waistcoats, flowers, table decorations and favours. Take a colour swatch when visiting the relevant suppliers to ensure the correct colour is identified. Using names of colours is not an ideal way to get an accurate match. The theme and colour scheme will bring everything together on the day. A suit worn by the groom can be different to that worn by other members of the party, although this is a matter of choice. The waistcoat/neckwear worn by a groom and 46 ON OUR DOORSTEP

his best man should be colour linked to the colour of the bridal gown. For the rest of the men’s party, link their waistcoat/neckwear to the colour of the bridesmaids dresses. The whole process should be stress free and the bridal shop should be prepared to give a written commitment showing relevant dates and detail all costs involved. Local bridal shops, such as Proposals, will often showcase a selection of dresses and outfits at local wedding fayres - so it’s a good idea to attend a number of these and compare the services and prices of each shop. Local wedding fayres can be found on www.proposalsbridalwear.com
