MONTON GREEN PRIMARY WINS LIFE SAVING DEFIBRILLATOR Monton Green Primary was the winner of a Gold defibrillator package courtesy of Hand on Heart Charity after Sarah Whiteley, the parent of pupils Remi and Rio, nominated the school with a chance to win one in the free monthly prize draw.

12 young people will die each week due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The only definitive treatment should this occur is to use a defibrillator combined with CPR. With the safety of the pupils and the staff in mind, Monton Green began fundraising to purchase one themselves. Sarah rang up Hand on Heart Charity for fundraising ideas and was encouraged by the team to nominate her son’s school to win one and make their school “Heart Safe�. Sarah and the teachers at the school were thrilled by the win saying they were “truly over the moon� to have won and will continue to fundraise and
support Hand on Monton Green Primary presented with the defibrillator Heart and are already selling the charity wristbands to staff and pupils. When Hand on Heart presented them with their defibrillator, Monton Green Primary let off 400 balloons donated by Party Delights Limited’s director, Alison Graham, along with attached cards with messages from the pupils thanking Hand on Heart for donating the Gold Package, which will not only equip the school with a defibrillator but will provide life-saving training for staff and pupils. Pat Mathews Memorial Fund Families & friends raising funds for charity
Since the very sad loss of a fantastic Father and much loved Husband in 2002, our family, with the great support of friends near and far, have been committed to raising money to help promote the awareness, early detection of illnesses and research into possible cures. We’ve supported many different charities. This year we completed a fundraising event with a difference... 16 men, travelling 4 countries in 4 days! Playing a round of golf in Scotland, Ireland, Wales & England and the only way to reach each course was by bicycle! We completed the challenge early May 2013 165 miles of cycling and 20 miles of walking and golfing!
Our fundraising target was £12,000. We chose 3 charities to donate the proceeds to:• CHRISTIE HOSPITAL - leading experts in cancer treatment, research and education and the largest cancer centre in Europe. • ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH UK - the UK's leading dementia research charity specialising in finding preventions, causes, treatments and a cure for dementia. • THE PIPPA JONES LITTLE TREASURE TRUST Established May 2010 to provide gift bags for children & teenagers affected by cancer. The Incredible Edible Salford (IES) project is growing from strength to strength as the local community commit to producing a sustainable food-source. The project, supported by the Horticulture Dept. at Salford City College’s Eccles Sixth Form Centre, is based on the successful Incredible Edible framework established in Todmorden, Yorkshire. Horticulture Tutor and IES founder, Ian Bocock, said “The Incredible Edible Salford project has received a large amount of interest and we are now preparing the land in order to plant what we hope to be our first successful crop. I think the Incredible Edible Salford project is appealing to local people for a variety of reasons; obviously there is the access to fresh, organic, home grown fruit and vegetables, but also it provides an interest and a community spirit in the sense that we need the volunteers to help us with the maintenance of

the project, and they are committing to a worthy, community-based project. The project really is one for everyone. We have all aspects of Salford’s community represented through the group of volunteers - families, retired people, those with a keen interest in gardening, and even those who know nothing about gardening but just wanted to get involved in a community-based project.” In an environment where food banks are steadily re-appearing across Salford, a stark reflection of the current economic climate and very real situations Salfordian families are finding themselves in, the Incredible Edible Salford project is providing an opportunity for people to dig deep, get back to basics and grow their own. Real Weddings THE BRIDE & GROOM... Emma Dunn and Dennis Heap, from Swinton, began their romance an amazing 21 years ago. Emma said “It was a long time coming have been together for three years, separating for ten and then finding each other again. After a further eight years together we thought it was time to get married!” THE THEME... We wanted to create a vintage look and chose outfits, venue dressing and car to match. We selected our outfits from local bridalwear shop, Proposals. I first went in with my daughter feeling a little scared but straight away I was put at ease. Rod, Sharon and Gilly make you feel great about yourself and so at home. We chose a mocha, latte and cream colour scheme. The dress was “vintage with slight bling”. I tried only three dresses but knew this was the right one. Rod, who organises all the men’s suits, made sure everything matched. THE BIG DAY... After a year of preparation, we married at Swinton Registry Office on 18th May 2013. Our reception was held at Swinton Park Golf Club as the food had been highly recommended. It was a perfect room-size and the staff were so welcoming and accommodating. From beginning to end, the day was absolutely gorgeous, we couldn't have asked for better. You only have to look at our faces in the photos to see how happy we both were. The only thing we would have loved, was to have our mums there who both passed away the year before. THE HONEYMOON... We celebrated in Australia, staying with my brother Ian and his Wife Edna who treated us to an absolutely memorable time doing things we both couldn't have dreamt of. TOP TIP... Plan the day as you both want it and enjoy it from beginning to end as it does go so quickly. Get yourself the best photographer you can afford as your pictures of the day are your memories. there’s only so much your photographer can do without using a flash. Always have this in mind when looking at venues.
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, that is why finding the right professional photographer is critical. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started...
4. GET CREATIVE You photographer is not just there to snap away aimlessly on the day. They are generally super creative people who can take on idea's and change things around to suit your requirements.
1. BOOK A DECENT PHOTOGRAPHER My advice is do your research. Online wedding blogs are a great place to start. As a guide you need to allocate at least £1k in your budget for your wedding day photography. The average photography spend in the UK is between £1,200-£2,500, honest!
5. LEAVE ENOUGH TIME Here’s what I normally request:GETTING READY: About two hours before the ceremony I will arrive & capture both bride & groom details & portraits. This really helps start the story of the day. GROUP SHOTS: Allow 5 mins per group shot, with a max 8-10 shots. BRIDE & GROOM PORTRAITS: I like to have at least half an hour for this. This can be split into two 15 min sections before and after the wedding breakfast.
2. HAVE AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT If your photographer offers an engagement shoot as part of the package then take it! They are a great way to practice showing emotion to each other in front of someone else and getting to know your photographer’s way of shooting before your wedding day. 3. Worsley Golf Club Iolo & Ava ~ 30th May, 2013 When Worsley Golf Club member Iolo Williams and his wife to be Ava were searching for a venue for their wedding reception, they looked no further than the Worsley Golf Club clubhouse. Iolo and Ava got married in Sapri, Italy and held their evening reception at Worsley Golf Club, 8th June 2013. Iolo recalls the reception, held in the elegant function room, couldn’t have gone any better:“Ava and I, and our guests, had a great time in the club. The food, set-up, service and DJ were excellent. Darren, Toni and Yvonne were very helpful in making arrangements and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to all the staff for helping make our evening reception a night we will never forget!
Worsley Golf Club The Club has recently invested in a major programme of refurbishment of the ladies’ facilities in the main room in suppor t of its goal to continue as the area’s premier venue for weddings, birthdays and other social events.
Wedding Fayre The Club will again be hosting its highly successful Wedding Fayre on 27th October 2013. Any prospective bride and groom looking to get married in 2014 would be warmly welcomed at the Fayre which will include a range of different local companies offering a full wedding service.
Our guests thought that being able to spend an hour outside in the sunshine before eating was brilliant and many commented on how beautiful the course and flower beds looked. Being able to choose items from a selection of buffet menus, we got exactly what we wanted and were confident our guests would enjoy the food. The quality and quantity on the night were praised by many people, which was great. Darren, Toni and Yvonne advised us on room layout, decoration and drinks without us ever feeling that it was not our final choice. The DJ Alan Kenyon, recommended by Darren, was superb. Being able to show pictures from our wedding in Italy on a large video screen, interspersed with photos taken on the night and music videos, created a really good atmosphere.” The guests gave some fantastic feedback too... “We had a great time, thanks for the invite, the photos, food and all round set up was brilliant.” “Really enjoyed last night, great venue, great company, great music, great food = great night.”

Tried and tested: Serenity Lounge In June, we were kindly invited to Serenity Lounge to sample their new Signature Pamper Package, incorporating a comprehensive range of holistic treatments that the salon specialises in. We couldn’t fail to be impressed by the new salon and the immensely relaxing 2-hour treatment we received. Read Louise’s verdict:“I arrived at the Spa which smelled delicious and had a ver y relaxing atmosphere, beautifully decorated in muted tones of stone and brown. Karen, who owns Serenity Lounge, is very calm and soothing. Combined with the warmth of the heated bed, plus the sumptuous fluffy covers, I felt very warm and relaxed before the treatment even started. Karen explained the run of events and began with a warming hot stone back massage, followed by the head pressure point massage. Having been under a lot of stress recently, at this point I can honestly say my mind and body star ted to unwind.
Next was the Chakra re-balancing with cr yst als, w hich identifies and rebalances the flow of energy around the body. Karen’s feedback was amazingly accurate in terms of the areas that were blocked as they related directly to my life. I then received a holistic facial using Dermalogica products, which I trust and use anyway, plus Karen incorporated their new Bee Venom cream which is purported to give a botox type of effect and is used by Royalty in the UK! The treatment was then finished off with a foot massage/reflexology and hot booties to ensure the foot moisturiser really soaked into my feet. Every part of my body had been pampered - I was walking on air when I left and still feel the benefits. Use sun protection of SPF15 to SPF30
Wear a sunscreen all year round UVA rays cause ageing to the skin. They attack our skin all year round (even in winter!). UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, generating dangerous free radicals that cause wrinkles! UVB are the burning rays of the sun that we feel on a hot sunny day. These damage the DNA structure of the skin cell. So, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection all year round. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.
Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF15, or if you have fair skin, SPF30. There’s little extra benefit of going higher - SPF 15 blocks about 94% and SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. Whichever you choose, apply it on all exposed skin 15 to 30 mins before going outside. Then reapply at least every two hours. If you sweat or swim, apply again.
Keep sun cream cool and out of sunlight Sunscreen is required to maintain its strength for 3 years but will only do so if not stored at high temperatures or in direct sunlight. Never use it past the expiry date. However, you should be using sunscreen all year round, so a bottle shouldn’t last more than a year!

KEEPING THE BRAIN IN SHAPE THIS SUMMER! Research consistently shows that children who do not engage in mental activity during the summer can lose up to a third of what they have learnt during the school year.
Summer holidays are a time when children want to have fun and not worry about studying, but it is vital that they don’t totally switch off mentally. Over the long school break children can easily forget knowledge learned during the year. Therefore, it’s essential that a child’s mind is kept active during the holiday period so they do not fall behind when they return to school. A survey conducted a few years ago by Prof. Michael Howe found that children’s language, mathematical and reading skills and concentration levels all start to decline after three weeks, and that 62% of children get bored in the summer holidays, 70% find it harder to do schoolwork after the break, and 76% forget things they learned at school the term before!
