Worsley Physio Clinic 2006-2016
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS! The clinic first opened its doors in September 2006 after owner Duncan Mason had identified the ideal location to offer a top class Physiotherapy service. The clinic quickly grew as a hub of activity; alongside Physiotherapy, the Pilates and Core Stability classes grew popular with the local community. Some of our very first Pilates class customers are still attending 10 years later! Athletes from all over the country choose this clinic as a centre of excellence. The clinic employs several Team GB physiotherapists who have supported athletes from the recreational runner to Olympic champions. They are proud of their approach and to offer this level of service to the local community alike. Worsley Physio are
currently supporting athletes preparing for the European Championships and Rio Olympics in 2016! The clinic established and organised the Worsley Woods Race & Family Fun Run for several years, a 5-mile race for adults and short fun run, which was held in partnership with the Friends of Roe Green who organised post-race entertainment. This evolved into a weekly Parkrun, which now attracts circa 300 runners to complete a 5k circuit around Worsley Woods every Saturday morning. Duncan is also now dedicated to coaching the juniors at Salford Harriers. Worsley Physio will celebrate its 10th birthday this September and look forward to the future of being a part of this vibrant Roe Green community.

What Our Clients Say...
“Kim found us tenants for our property within a matter of days of us expressing an interest in letting the property.
“We have exchanged contracts on our sale and purchase today and I just wanted to write and thank you for all your help and support in selling both our houses and helping to 'make our dreams come true'. Without your prompt and efficient service I doubt we would have sold my house so quickly and in turn enabled us to purchase the new property we had our hearts set on.
Due to other time commitments we simply don't have time to deal with any property issues but fortunately Riley Estates gave us great peace of mind and they now manage the property for us. I would recommend anyone thinking of renting their property out to speak with Kim.”
Throughout the whole process you provided a very professional service - arriving promptly for appointments, replying to emails and phone calls in a timely manner, keeping us informed at all times and offering sound advice and reassurance through what can be a stressful and difficult time. You also understand that a home is so much more than bricks and mortar and you were very understanding in the early days when I was wavering about selling my much loved cottage. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend your company to family and friends.”

The process was handled efficiently and professionally. Kim explained everything to us; what was involved, what was expected from us, what protection we had etc...

Eccles and District History Society
CELEBRATES 60 YEARS The Society’s first meeting was held at Eccles Library on 1st February, 1956. Since then, the Society has promoted local history through its regular meetings and lectures, its publications, and through the Frank Mullineux Local History Award. Social events and excursions have been a feature too. From local guided walks to coach trips around the region, and festive meals at local restaurants. The Eccles & District History Society’s emblem is the boar's head, which was once the heraldic device of the Lords of the Manor of Barton, the Booth family. The boar's head is featured on the arms of the Borough of Eccles(1892) and of the City of Salford(1974). Each year the EDHS offers The Frank Mullineux Award for work in local history. Frank was a
founder-member and he made a wonderful contribution to local history, so it is fitting that we remember him in making this annual Award. The work may take various forms - a publication, an essay, research, an exhibition or anything which promotes the study, or contributes to our knowledge, of local history. We welcome new members and are known for our informal, friendly atmosphere and a high quality programme of talks, trips and social events. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm at Alexandra House, Liverpool Road, Eccles. The new programme commences on 14th September when David George will talk about Canal Warehouses on the Bridgewater and Irwell. For more details visit www.edhs.btck.co.uk or email: eccleshistory@yahoo.co.uk (Annual membership £16, Visitors £3 per meeting)

“Home Instead... a company we are proud to be a part of ” Hello, I am Jo Shaughnessy, co-founder of Home Instead Senior Care Salford. My background is in Accountancy, and I have enjoyed supporting and working with many businesses in and around the North West for over 25 years. Like so many other families looking after loved ones, last year we needed some additional help and were desperately trying to source quality homecare support for my mother-in-law. Eventually, and after much searching, we came across Home Instead Senior Care. Unfortunately they weren’t based in this area at the time, but we were so impressed by their levels of care, understanding and professionalism that we decided that Salford deserved a Home Instead Senior Care of its very own. Home Instead Senior Care has now been operating from our base in Swinton for nearly six months and we have been overwhelmed with the interest we have had already from other families looking for help and support for their loved ones.
18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Our client-focused care plans, the “matching” of clients with specific CAREGivers, and the minimum visits of at least an hour means that some very special relationships have already been forged. At the core of the success of Home Instead Senior Care is our amazing CAREGivers. We are always looking to recruit dedicated, caring and passionate people who are able to spare a few hours a week to share experiences and offer support to our lovely seniors in Salford. All training is provided and ongoing, we pay above the living wage and our Clients are truly inspirational. We believe that together with the other 170+ Home Instead Senior Care offices throughout the U.K. we can, and we will change the face of ageing. With four of our offices already receiving ‘outstanding’ from CQC and Home Instead Senior Care receiving The Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2016, we are confident about the future. For more information, call 0161 870 3861 or visit: Home Instead Senior Care, Colgran Lodge, 20 Worsley Road, Swinton, M27 5WW. www.homeinstead.co.uk/salford. REAL WEDDINGS Ashley & Stephen Hindle 21st May 2016 Dressed by Proposals Bridalwear We met Ashley back in January 2015. We were holding a Designer Day and she was passing, so she booked an appointment for later in the day to come back with her mum. She tried on a few gowns but kept coming back to the "Kimberley" gown - it was new for the 2016 season and was on loan just for the Designer Day. She ordered it but then in the April had a wobble about the gown, so we got it back in for her to try again. On this visit I had taken delivery of a new gown "Angie"by Kitty Chen, my sample was in ice-mint and ivory. She asked if she could try it on...
Stephen, the groom, was also dresses by Proposals and he and his party were in tails with pink accessories. They all looked fabulous, even little Luca the page boy who had travelled from Cyprus to be his Uncle and Auntie's page boy.
From that moment on the Kimberley gown, as lovely as it was, just faded into insignificance. Ashley’s Mum said "if you want it, that’s the one you will have", so we swapped the order over to Angie but in white. I was a little worried how it would transfer to white, as I had seen it in the ivory and it was very creamy but stunning.
Their bridesmaids wore dresses in a soft platinum with pink flowers - they all were just PERFECT!
When it came in Kitty had used a fabulous "winter white” shade which was just amazing. When Ashley put it on she looked and felt stunning. She chose a cathedral length veil with a scattering of crystals. WOW - I got goose bumps when she was finished.
Ashley and Stephen were married on 21st May 2016 at St Mary’s Church, Ellenbrook and the reception was held at Ellesmere Golf Club. The whole day looked magical and even though it rained, it seemed to add to it. It didn’t dampen the atmosphere.
"Congratulations
Mr and Mrs Hindle"

BOXING FOR CANCER RESEARCH Andrew Cardwell, Managing Director of Cardwells Estate Agents, who has just opened his fourth branch on Memorial Road, Walkden is taking part in a charity boxing match at the Macron Stadium (home of Bolton Wanderers FC) on the 28th August. The event is aiming to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Andrew has no boxing experience and explained that, “Boxing is something that is way out of my comfort zone and is brand new to me. In fact fighting is completely alien to me - I am a lover not a fighter! I am more inclined to give someone a hug than a punch on the nose, so I am fully expecting to lose and will probably get beaten up. But, the purpose is to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research.”

We all know somebody who has been affected by the ‘Big C’ and the work that Cancer Research UK do is fantastic, so I am just trying to do a little something to help this great cause”. Andrew has previously run 20+ marathons for charity but considers this his toughest challenge yet. “Sadly, none of my long distance running experience is useful for boxing. I will give it my very best on the night - you might see me struggle, but you wont see me quit. All the participants are amazing and I am proud to be amongst them.” If anybody would like to make a donation the web address is: justgiving.com/AndrewCardwell

22 December 1940: Buildings in Manchester Piccadilly after the German air raids
The Blitz: Part I
The Salford Casualties Just over 75 years ago... ...was the Battle of Britain, when Hitler’s Luftwaffe failed to gain mastery of our skies and the planned Invasion of Britain from across the Channel was cancelled. But what was not cancelled was “The Blitz” - a ruthless bombing of all our major cities, to destroy not only our will to resist, but also our industrial capacity to continue the War. So it was that the Manchester area became a prime target from August 1940 onward. The Luftwaffe possessed excellent aerial reconnaissance photography of what they viewed as valuable installations; the Salford Docks and its wealth of shipping engaged in the Atlantic trade, and the huge industrial complex of Trafford Park. Intermittent air raids began but not in great strength and caused little damage to those targets. The early raids seemed random with bombs dropping in Manchester City Centre and suburbs (the Palace Theatre on Oxford Street was hit in September). Perhaps these early raids were testing the defences for something bigger to come...
The “Christmas Blitz” Such did, indeed, prove to be the case! On the night of December 22nd/23rd 1940 some 270 bombers arrived over the Manchester area, guided as we now know by radio beams projected from the Continent. Visibility may have been poor, defensive fire intense, or both, for the 272 tons of high explosives and 1,037 incendiary bombs that they unleashed largely missed their targets. Instead they fell on the city centre and on widely spaced suburbs 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP
such as Stretford, Salford, Eccles, Winton and even Worsley. In these outlying districts they caused many civilian casualties. The following night of December 23rd/24th, the raiders returned. 171 bombers dropped 195 tons of high explosives and 893 incendiary bombs, mostly failing to hit strategic targets, but devastating Manchester centre and spread over a wide area. Nazi propaganda claimed that Manchester had been burned to the ground. The damage was indeed grievous, but as far as actual damage to morale or war manufacturing capability was concerned, the raids were a complete failure. A detailed account of Manchester’s ordeal will be related in our next issue. For now we shall focus on what the “Christmas Blitz” did locally.
On Our Doorstep On the night of the first raid I was 5 weeks old and lived in Davis Street, Eccles, close to what was Barton Docks, on the Ship Canal. When the air raid sirens sounded my family (all but my father, who was on duty with the Fire Service), took shelter in the “Anderson“ at the end of the garden, sunk into the ground. Shortly afterward, our house and that next door received a direct hit from a bomb and was completely destroyed, but we were saved by the shelter. “Bombed-out” as the expression went at the time, we spent the rest of the War above a shop on Worsley Road, Winton.
The Tragedy At “The Cottage” When I was about 8 years old the family lived in Cypress Road in Winton on the Eccles/Worsley

Local History
Map of “Blitz” sites in Salford
border. One of our local play areas, across Worsley Brook and Barton Road, was a strange area known to us as “McCraes”. It had many attractions: an orchard, many “conker” trees, a huge but tortured copper beech tree with its upper branches collapsed into great mats on which we could recline. The biggest enigma however was a huge crater full of scattered bricks and debris, largely overgrown with brambles... It was only in later years that I came to learn of the dreadful event that had created this scene and that had occurred on the same night as my own home had been destroyed. “The Cottage”, as the house that had stood on the spot was called, was the home of Drs Edward and Edith McCrae who lived there with their two children and a maid. It was, in fact a large house and stood in around 4 acres of land. Both Edward and Edith were eminent surgeons, with Practices in Manchester and they acted as Consultants at local hospitals. Edward also lectured at Manchester University. He was an outstanding tennis player of international quality.
The McCraes Headstone at St. Marks, Worsley
Churchyard, their grave marked by a headstone. The site of their former home is now a retirement complex in pleasant gardens. The orchard, the copper beech tree and its tortured branches, a testament to the explosive blast, are also gone.
...and again on that terrible night On Gilda Brook Road in Eccles, near the former “White Horse” pub (now Sainsburys), stood a large house that was acting as the HQ for a First Aid Station and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) base. A Christmas party there was closing abruptly on the sounding of the air raid sirens and all were rushing to be on duty, when suddenly a large bomb struck the road outside the house. The effect was catastrophic. Eleven people lost their lives on the spot including nurses, ambulance personnel and ARP Wardens. A further 30 people were treated for injuries and shock. In all, in the Eccles/Barton/Monton/Winton and Worsley areas, more than 1,400 homes were destroyed and many died or were injured over the course of the War.
On the night of December 22nd, when the McCraes had planned a pre-Christmas party, a stray bomber which perhaps had been driven off-course by defensive action, released a “land-mine” (a very large bomb suspended from a parachute), over Worsley. It floated to earth and though largely surrounded by fields and woodland and its own extensive grounds, the Cottage, fatefully sustained a direct hit and all within died instantly.
My final memory of those times was in 1947, when a convoy of lorries arrived on Cranbrook Road in Winton and a large number of men disembarked. They were German prisoners of war and had come to excavate an unexploded bomb from the field behind Kingswood Road on the Westwood Park Estate. The bomb was de-fused and the men duly dug it up. They were kept well supplied with tea, sandwiches and cigarettes by the local populace in an atmosphere of harmony...
The family now rest in peace in St. Marks

Competition! Win a meal for 4 people with a bottle of wine at Davardi’s Pizza Bar, Monton! Enter our competition to win a delicious 2course meal for 4 people, with a bottle of wine at the new Davardi’s Pizza bar in Monton village centre.
About Davardi’s Davardi's Pizza Bar is a family run restaurant and takeaway that has been established for 45 years. Passed from the original owners David, Barbara, Jean and Alan, on to the Lindley family; Sarah, Rob, Jenny and Tom in 2007. To celebrate our 45th birthday we opened our second Restaurant in May on Monton high street. We still use the original pizza recipe, with dough made fresh every morning, and our own authentic tomato sauce. We have also added a few things to the menu, like our 'Rosemary & Sea Salt Wedges' and 'Garlic King Prawns' starter. We also run weekly competitions on social media.
