Local Business

BIN AND GONE In October 2014 Bury became the first council in England to empty rubbish bins only once every three weeks. A local entrepreneur, Josh Morris, believed that most homes still had a need for more regular bin collections. Following the reduced service in Salford, many people have struggled to keep on top of their rubbish, citing problems with overflowing bins, local fly-tipping, bad smells and increased numbers of flies and maggots. Josh says: “It’s a problem that a significant number of households face and our service provides people with the option to have their bin emptied before it’s overflowing. You can choose from either a oneoff collection, or an ongoing regular service, depending on what you need”. We all have those times when we need a little extra waste clearing; after parties and BBQ’s, when we are

moving home or spring cleaning; when we forget to put the bin out and of course at Christmas time. So, when life is too busy and your bin is too full… Busy Bins are there to help. So how does it work? Arrange your one-off bin collection or regular service online at www.busybins.co.uk or call us on 0161 766 3330. Busy Bins will empty your bin on the weeks that the council don’t. No extra bin is required and your bin day will stay the same. The friendly and professional team will then empty your bin into one of their clean refuse wagons and place the bin back tidily for you. Busy Bins can provide their bin collection service to residents in Worsley, Roe Green, Boothstown, Walkden, Ellenbrook, Monton and the whole borough of Salford.

Helping Children Fit In and Achieve At School Doing well at school is key to breaking the cycle of poverty but many families struggle to afford school uniform which means their children can be bullied in the playground and get into trouble for breaking school rules. SmartStart is a unique initiative run by children’s charity Wood Street Mission which aims to distribute one million pounds worth of school uniform - enough to give each of the 1 in 3 local children living below the poverty line a school uniform. You can help by donating any of the following school necessities to the project’s back-to-school appeal: NON-BRANDED NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM for children aged 3-18 from any high street store. Polo shirts, shirts, trousers, skirts, jumpers and sweatshirts are all needed.

l

NEW SCHOOL SPORTS KIT, such as sports shorts, PE skirts, jogging bottoms, fleeces, sports bags, trainers and plimsolls.

l STATIONERY like pencil cases, pens, folders, jotters, maths sets, calculators and dictionaries. l

USEFUL EVERYDAY ITEMS every child needs i.e. school shoes, school bags, PE Bags, lunch boxes, new underwear, new socks, hats & gloves.

l DRESSING UP COSTUMES - new and good quality second hand items suitable for dressing up days.

Drop off donations to our Manchester office at:

Pre-shool classes for the mini football enthusiasts! Diddikikcks is the largest pre-school football program in the North of England with thousands of children each week attending their local class. Developed and run by FA qualified coaches, these fun-filled and structured sessions have shown to increase motor and social skills, as well as boosting confidence and cognitive abilities. We know that every child is unique, and have learned that children best develop their abilities when playing with other children of both similar age and ability. As such we team our diddkickers into age defined classes, so that they can develop together.

8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

This coupled with small class sizes, means more time with our coaches, and development for all to see. There are local classes right here in Salford at: Walkden on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Swinton/Clifton on Monday mornings. Get in touch for your FREE trial session!

ROE GREEN PLAY PARK:

INITIAL PLANS FOR THE NEW PLAY PARK At the end of 2016 the Roe Green Play Park committee announced that the target of £100,000 to save the park had been reached. Since then the committee have been working with Salford City Council to agree the new plans for the playground. An initial design has been agreed and RGPP can share these plans...although it is still being worked on. The next stage is to draw the plans out in detail and submit it to the Quantity Surveyors. At this point a completion date for the park has not been given, but the committee are hoping it will be open this Autumn. Watch out for updates on the works on...

“WORSLEY CARES” AS ROUGH SLEEPERS GO DOWN TO THE WOODS...AGAIN! Worsley Rotary Club working with Giant’s Seat Scout Camp are again hosting ‘Worsley Cares’, their fantastic fundraiser. For a 3rd year volunteers will be sleeping outdoors in cardboard boxes, but this year not at Middlewood Scout Camp which is moving, but at Giant’s Seat Scout Camp off Ringley Rd West on Friday 29th September. Principal beneficiaries will be Coffee4Craig and Barnabus. Last year over £7,000 was raised for charities working in Manchester and Salford to support the homeless.

Event organisers Tony Jackson (Worsley Rotary) and Ann Chapman (Giant’s Seat Scout Camp) said “This is a renewed call to action; show you care for the really vulnerable by joining us”. Visit www.worsleycares.uk, or worsleycares on facebook to see how to take part

WoW GUIDE (What’s on Where) SALFORD Caring and supporting older people in their own homes is the speciality of Home Instead Senior Care. ‘All our Client’s personalities are different and so too are their requests and requirements. Many Clients look forward to trips out, with the support of their CAREGivers, especially on fair weather days’, reports Michelle Corcoran. This has prompted Susan Robinson from Home Instead Senior Care to go out into the community to research activities open to the Seniors of Salford. Susan has now completed the Salford ‘WoW’ guide and it has been received with enthusiasm. ‘I am astounded how many clubs, social groups, luncheon clubs, support groups and exercise classes there are in Salford. In addition Salford

really does support our community who are living with Dementia together with their Carers. Dementia friendly swimming, singing and dancing with dementia, memory boxes and sporting memories are all activities held in Salford on a regular basis. I am hoping this guide will be useful to many – people just need signposting.’ Susan and Jo are also offering dementia awareness sessions to any group, free of charge, in Salford. Stop Local Car Crime There has been a dramatic rise in vehicle crime in our area. Despite numerous arrests the area is still very much under threat. Car crime is often thought to be committed by sophisticated high-tech criminals. In reality, most vehicle crimes are opportunistic and preventable. It only takes seconds for a thief to steal something from your car. We’d like to offer the following advice: l Check it’s locked, and check it again. CCTV shows that offenders trawl our streets checking vehicle doors for insecurities. l Remove everything from the car; don't even leave a jacket where it can be seen. Items such as handbags, wallets, sunglasses, gym bags and tools have all been stolen.

l Leave your glove box open to show that it’s empty and there’s nothing in it to steal. l Store car ownership information, driving licence and insurance documents at home, not in your car. l Routine is the key - make this advice part of your daily practice. l Think about where you keep your keys. Thieves sometimes break into houses looking for car keys to steal the vehicle. Keep keys away from doors and windows, and tucked away out of sight.

Your Beauty Problems Answered... Q: Can I treat Facial Thread Veins and Rosacea? A: Yes! We have an excellent success rate from just one treatment using the Ellipse IPL - a form of laser to permanently reduce facial redness, cherry angiomas, acne, flushing, rosacea and thread veins. We can also recommend products and skin supplements to help prevent future skin conditions from reoccurring. Q: My husband has in-growing hairs, spots and rashes on his neck from his work shirt rubbing against his beard. Is there a treatment for this? A: If you permanently reduce the hairs, the condition will also reduce. We recommend IPL - permanent hair reduction as a solution. Hair removal does not work on grey, white, blonde or ginger hairs.

Q: My daughter needs a treatment for her oily skin. What can you suggest? A: We have lots of treatments for oily skin. From microdermabrasion, peels, facials or simple home care regime. Book her in for a FREE skin consultation and skin scan to determine the best solution. Q: What's best for wrinkles? Injectables or facials? A: Injectable products work to relax the muscle; facials work on the skin. They make an excellent team! All our cosmetic injectables are carried out by a qualified nurse. However, I would recommend trying an Environ Collagen Power facial first as this may improve the skin without the need for injectables. FREE consultations are available for all treatments we provide.

BRIDALWEAR

Keeping up with the latest trends Proposals is a local, family run company of 24 years standing and offers Service, Reliability and Value. We pride ourselves in being up to date with the latest trends for next year.

The Onlyway Dress

Lace is still looming large, however the heavier fabrics are back; satins and mikado, still featuring the low back. Jewel detailing on the backs or just very simple. Slim dresses are still in the mix but the ballgown and A-line are making a comeback - very Audrey Hepburn! Tea length dresses are still popular but what is great about our Tea length dresses is that they also come in full length for £120 extra. Pastels and nudes are very big for next year for bridesmaids and the addition to our range of the ‘Only Way’ multi-way dresses. It is just one dress which can be worn in 15 ways which means all your bridesmaids can wear the same dress, and in the same colour, but wear them all differently. Flower girl dresses always look pretty in ivory with a colour sash, which we have from £60.

View of Manchester 1870

King Cotton Imagine a skyline dominated by towering chimneys, standing over massive buildings, all strangely identical. Great slabs of buildings, mostly 3 or 4 storeys high, with large windows. Come close to one of those buildings and have your hearing assaulted by a cacophony of noise from the machinery within. Then be there when the crowds of workers left for home, picking cotton fluff from their hair and clothes in a minor blizzard of white fibres. That was the Lancashire cotton industry, a monumental enterprise that, at its peak, employed several hundred thousand workers, produced 85% of the world’s cotton goods and an astonishing 8 billion yards of cloth in a single year. All this had its beginnings in the 17th century when it was realised that the humid air and streams of soft water were particularly suited to the spinning and weaving of textiles. Initially a “cottage industry”, where spinning would be by wheel and weaving be a single loom in the home, by the 1830’s the factory system became the norm. In our local area the initial impetus had been silk production, with 3 silk mills in Eccles, but this soon gave way to cotton.

Underground By the 1860’s Victorian ambition and enterprise and the advent of “Joint stock companies”, led to an unprecedented growth of the cotton industry. Capital was raised and throughout the county cotton mills were 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP

built in town after town. It seemed as if a single architect had cornered the market, so similar were they in design. It appeared that the entire world wanted Lancashire cotton – but then disaster struck. The American Civil War broke out, principally on the major issue of slavery in the southern States, and the supply of raw cotton, on which the industry depended, dried up. The northern States blockaded the ports of the south and what got through met another obstacle. The poor cotton workers of Lancashire were in sympathy with the slaves of America and refused to handle the smuggled cargoes! By 1865 the war had ended and, though there was a period of depression, by the 1870’s, the Industry resumed its growth. Hundreds of mills were built and increased mechanisation resulted from a parallel industry created by inventive genius. A second boom in demand took place from 1904 and 1912, when many more mills were built and demand was buoyant. Manchester was at the centre of all this and so great was the wealth and prestige of this that the city was dubbed “Cottonopolis”. To this day, in far-flung parts of Africa, cotton materials are known as “Manchesters” - though it has been many years since that was its origin. The outbreak of the First World War was the beginning of the end for the cotton industry in Lancashire - though it was to be a slow death. Local History

Monton Mill, Eccles

Bridgewater Mill, Eccles

At that time supplies of raw cotton dried up and the British Government advised the Colonies to produce for themselves. The Industry had long provided the technology, mills had been built and textile production was seen as an industry to help develop the outposts of Empire. When the War was over, Lancashire was to pay for this, with lost markets and jobs. Not only that, the new producers, with lower costs, were able not only to satisfy their domestic markets, but also to out-compete Lancashire worldwide. In 1929, in the face of a rapidly collapsing situation, the Government ordered the Bank of England to set up the Lancashire Cotton Corporation, in a bid to rationalise the industry. Some 104 mills were bought by the LCC and some of these were to continue in production into the 1960’s.

The Local Mills Though there is very little evidence of their existence in the present day, our local towns were once dominated by “satanic mills”. In what is geographically west Salford; Eccles, Swinton, Walkden, Pendlebury and Pendleton

Lowry Mill, Swinton

there were a total of 56 cotton mills employing thousands of workers. Some of these mills were truly vast and the statistics of their machinery equally so. Monton Mill, built in 1906 and which existed until 1964, was a spinning mill. It had 91,680 mule spindles, divided into 26,784 twist spindles and 64,896 weft spindles. Weaving mills also did things on the grand scale with as many as 2,000 looms – a far cry from the cottage industry days. There are still a few mill buildings still to be seen – in Walkden, Swinton and Eccles, although none of them practice their original purpose, Of the eight in Eccles only one remains – the Bridgewater Mill at Patricroft bridge. But other non too distant towns have a richer heritage. Leigh can still boast a mill skyline, as can Oldham and other Manchester satellite towns. The collapse of cotton – and coal mining - was traumatic for many towns in Lancashire, but less so locally, due to greater diversification. “ Cottonopolis” more than survived to become Greater Manchester.
