Why You Need to
Write a Will Would it surprise you to know that £8 million went to the government last year because people didn’t leave a Will? A Will is the only place where you can formally consolidate your final wishes, it’s perhaps the most important document you’ll ever own – so why is it that so many of us leave it until the last minute? Concerns about how long the process will take, worries that it will be complicated, stresses over the cost; all of these things mean we put off making a Will until much later down the line. If you pass away without a Will, you’ll die intestate. This ultimately means that you have no control over who gets to benefit from what you leave
behind - or whether they benefit at all. For your loved ones, this can be incredibly difficult and distressing to deal with – certainly not what they need during such a challenging time. As well as the added stress, not having a Will also means that they will bear the full brunt of any Inheritance Tax liability, which potentially takes a significant cut from your estate and in turn, from their inheritance. As well as giving you peace of mind, a Will is the only way to ensure the things you leave behind are passed on in line with your wishes. Taking the steps to plan for the future are important. It’s never too early to write a Will, but it can be too late. Howard Balkind - WTLPA.co.uk

Monton Guides create a real BUZZ in Manchester This summer, a colony of over 100 giant bees will descend on the streets of Manchester as part of the “Bee in the City Trail”. 2nd Monton Guides Unit has created one of the additional 130 medium-sized community bees that will swarm across the city.
working together, unity and equality. After a vote, the most popular name, Bee Yourself, was decided. All 19 girl guides worked together evenings, weekends and during half term holiday, to decorate the fibreglass sculpture.
As part of their research, they had a visit from local Beekeepers Norman and Nora Higgs, who delivered an educational and engaging talk on beekeeping. The girls loved being taught the waggle dance!
The “Bee in the City Trail” is a free family friendly event, running from 23rd July to 23rd September 2018. More information can be found on www.beeinthecitymcr.co.uk.
The Guides worked together to come up with ideas, and with the help of Marc Gallander of BeeStrongMCR, a final design was created. Features include the Girlguiding uniform colours, words of the promise and Trefoil logo and the interlinked hands on the base are all mixed, signifying friendship,
When the exhibition finishes, the Unit’s bee will return to take residence in the village of Monton. The giant bees will be auctioned and all money raised will go to the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s charity ‘WeLoveMCR’ to support local community groups and charities.

SHOWCASING LOCAL ARTISTS
at Eccles Community Art Gallery The Gallery opened about 10 years ago in Eccles Shopping Centre as part of an ‘empty shops’ programme and since then we’ve provided affordable exhibition space for over 150 local artists and craftspeople. Exhibitions change monthly, on the second Saturday of each month, giving visitors a chance to call in often and see a wide variety of work.
We work with schools, local groups, photographic and art clubs etc, offering exhibitions in the gallery, visits to the gallery, workshops etc and take part in local festivals and other community events. We’re planning a mini Arts Festival, with arts, crafts, theatre, music and lots more, in Eccles Shopping Centre on Saturday 8th September as part of Eccles Festival. Watch This Space !
We run occasional workshops, free to participants and led by experienced artists with subjects ranging from watercolours via Chinese painting to urban sketching.
The gallery, run by volunteers, is open Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and Tuesdays & Fridays 11am to 2pm.
We have a Friday Art group meeting 12-2pm with an informal programme of demonstrations, workshops … and some Fridays when we just paint and draw for fun! Beginners and experienced artists all welcome.

CARERS AND EX-CARERS SUPPORT GROUP
Are you caring for someone with dementia and living in Salford? If you answered YES then this is for you. We are a group of carers and ex-carers who meet once a month at the Humphrey Booth Resource Centre, Worsley Road, Swinton, M27 5WW. We are a very friendly welcoming group of people who meet to chat about the way we are coping with our caring roles. It is so easy to feel isolated, even if you have family and friends around you and it isn't always easy to open up and admit that you are worried about the future and if you are doing the correct things as a carer. Those feelings of frustration, anger, "why me" and guilt. We have all been there and our aim is to reach out and invite you to join us. We may not have all the answers but we can always find a man or woman who has.
18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
We have various guest speakers e.g. counsellors, occupational therapists, psychologists, health professionals, solicitors etc and we also enjoy the occasional craft sessions, demonstrations and trips out. We have lots of laughter and the occasional tears but we certainly enjoy ourselves. So what are you waiting for, we would love you to come and join us for a cuppa every fourth Wednesday of each month, 10.00am-12.00pm. Next meetings: 25th July, 22nd August, 26th September and 24th October. For more details contact Pat Foy: Tel: 0161 788 9806 or e-mail carersandexcarers@yahoo.com

RHS Garden Bridgewater: Work is underway! Currently the largest gardening project in Europe, Salford’s new 154 acre RHS Garden Bridgewater will open to the public in 2020. Named after the historic Bridgewater Canal which runs along the southern end of the site, RHS Garden Bridgewater is situated on the former estate of the First Lord of Ellesmere, who built Worsley New Hall in the early 1840’s. This once in a generation project will see the Royal Horticultural Society take inspiration from the heritage of the site and transform it into a world-class garden in the North West, while also delivering a programme of community outreach and education activities, volunteering The 4 acre historic lake at RHS Garden Bridgewater Photograph by Mark Waugh and training. With the help of a small army of volunteers, our Horticulture team have been hard at work clearing and preparing the site. Work has also begun on the restoration of the historic 4 acre lake and management of the extensive woodland area. In May local building conservation specialists Maysand arrived on site to begin restoring the walls of the historic 11 acre Walled Kitchen Garden. With 1.4kms of wall, over 5000 square metres of face brick and 100 metres of cracks to stitch and repair, restoring the walls to their former glory is a big job! The Ellesmere Chaucer Most people will know the name Geoffrey Chaucer and will associate this name with The Canterbury Tales - a collection of stories centred upon a group of pilgrims as they made their way to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket at Canterbury. The plot was that each pilgrim would tell two tales on their journey. The author chose to write the stories in English, and not French - a significant decision since, in the years following the Norman invasion in 1066, French had been the dominant court and literary language. The tales were written between 1370 and 1400 and this choice by Chaucer made the work one of the first major works written in English. A hand-written and richly illuminated manuscript of this work, made in the first decade of the fifteenth century, eventually passed into the hands of Sir Thomas Egerton, an English nobleman and judge who was appointed Lord Chancellor by Elizabeth I in 1596. He started to collect a number of books. Over a few generations, the library gradually expanded, until it came into the possession of Lord Francis Egerton, the first Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1856). By this time, the collection was housed at Bridgewater House, London, where it remained within the Egerton family. With Francis Granville Egerton, who became first Earl of Ellesmere in 1846, the Chaucer manuscript was made available to scholars. The portrait is widely believed to be that of Chaucer himself, the narrator and the author. Sadly, by 1916, taxes were placing a heavy burden upon the family and it was decided to put the collection up for auction at Sotheby's. The American railroad tycoon, Henry E. Huntington, purchased the Bridgewater library in May 1917, 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
through the agency of George D. Smith. The manuscript became known as the Ellesmere Chaucer and was recognized as the 'jewel of the collection'. Huntington became a collector late in life, in 1911, and over the next fifteen years his enormous wealth enabled him to purchase books from all over the world. A true bibliophile, he established his library on his estate in San Marino, California. He paid one million dollars for the Bridgewater Library of 4,400 books. The Ellesmere Chaucer is now on public display there. The Sotheby's catalogue described the manuscript thus: A superb manuscript of the highest possible importance... This manuscript is unquestionably the greatest monument of English literature in the world. W.W. Skeat, the pre-eminent British philologist of his time, used the Ellesmere manuscript as the basis for his edition of The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, since he saw it as 'the finest and best of all the MSS (manuscripts) now extant.' Chaucer was buried (in 1400) at Westminster Abbey, since he was a tenant of the Abbey's close. In 1556, his remains were transferred to a more ornate tomb in a corner of the Abbey now known as Poet's Corner, making him the first person to be interred in that area. Written by Paul Speakman

Eccles Rotary Buzzes with Books
Help us Spread the Word Eccles Rotary has been a part of the community since 1932, serving the local people with projects such as working with the unemployed, promoting youth activities through music, away days and competitions and supporting the Eccles Gateway Club (MENCAP). We also run the Rotary Community Bookshop, a meeting point in the Shopping Centre. This project started in 2009 in response to the National Literacy Trust‘s campaign to create a literacy culture in England and to promote more reading, particularly in people who thought it was not for them. Eccles Rotary now operate a twice monthly “bookswap” from our shop as well as supplying book boxes to a number of retirement complexes in the area. In addition as a major part of the scheme we give free nearly new books to children and for the last four Christmases have distributed new, wrapped books to young people from our Santa’s Grotto.
30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
In the press recently, an article reported that 40,000 children in Greater Manchester do not own a single book, so the club took action and organised a large scale event, “The Buzzing Book Bonanza”, in the Shopping Centre where 200+ books were freely given to children and they could listen to stories, meet local authors and “Hollyoaks” star Kieron Richardson, find out about the library and enjoy healthy food from “Strip Café” along with drinks from Eccles Coffee Bar. This was the local community working together. Now, following requests, we want to extend our book activities across Eccles/Monton and are looking for local people who have an interest in reading and a couple of hours a month to spare to help us. This is a perfect way to make a positive local impact, meet new like-minded people in an informal situation and organise events. Find out more and email us at info@ecclesrotary.org
