Peel Park

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN SALFORD I

f you fancy a walk in the park this summer, Salford has more than 60 to choose from.

The oldest is Peel Park, which includes Salford Museum and Art Gallery. Opened in 1846, it was the first truly public park in England, and was recently restored to its Victorian glory. The park is also part of the 33 mile long Irwell Sculpture Trail, from Salford Quays to Bury. Find full details of the trail at www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk. Nearby Kersal Wetlands, off Littleton Road is a haven for birds and part of Salford’s second flood basin. Further up the Irwell river valley, Clifton Country Park has 48 hectares of open space as well as the remains of the Wet Earth Colliery, sunk in 1740. Clifton Country Park’s new play area is great for disabled children, with wheel friendly surfaces, a basket seat swing, accessible roundabout and picnic benches. Look out for the giant swing, climbing frame with monkey bars, ropes and slides and animal themed springies. The park café welcomes dogs and offers a tasty menu of hot drinks, soup and snacks.

Try something new... From bat walks to conservation and gardening, from health walks to den building and pond dipping, there’s a wealth of activities and events for all ages in Salford’s parks over the summer. Check out www.salford.gov.uk/parks, www.visitsalford.info or www.peelparksalford.info Follow Salford City Council’s rangers: SalfordRangerTeam or PeelParkSalford @SalfordWildlife @PeelParkSalford

EATING OUT...with a difference

These days, we eat out more often and for a wider range of occasions. Compared to when we were children going out for a milestone birthday or anniversary (if we were lucky!) - now we eat out with friends, family or work colleagues on a weekly basis. We are fortunate to live in an area with an excellent choice of cafes, bars and restaurants with new independents opening on a regular basis. In this feature we focus on highlighting local eateries with a unique offering; something you may not already know about and somewhere new that is certainly worth trying!

he Glass House at Worsley, situated in the heart of Worsley College, offers a fine-dining experience for those within the local community for a fraction of the cost presented at other highend restaurants.

Renowned for their Grill in the Park restaurant offering great steaks and the Brew Bar lounge mixing the finest cocktails, the hotel has now created the ‘Courtyard’ a newly refurbished outdoor seating area where you can soak up the great British sun and menu delights. The ‘Courtyard’ caters for all weathers with its giant umbrellas and patio heaters - they have even thought of blankets for those chillier evenings.

Rated 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, the restaurant, which is run by the college’s dedicated hospitality and culinary arts students, under the supervision of their expert teachers, offers specialist lunch, dinner and afternoon tea menus, all meticulously designed by the talented students themselves.

Whether you are here for a celebration or a light refreshing lunch from the new menu, the ‘Courtyard’ has it all, including new tables with integrated ice wells to keep the champagne cool!

Customers regularly leave five-star reviews, having this to say about the training establishment: “Simply the best, we were very well looked after, fantastic food and outstanding service.”

Worsley Social was launched earlier this year, by On Our Doorstep and Angel Media Digital Marketing Agency, with our first event held in February 2019. We hold regular networking events in Worsley where local businesses and new start-ups can meet up and have a chat over a drink or two! We wanted the meetings to be informal, relaxed and accessible, so events are held in the evening and are FREE to attend. Just come along, buy yourself a drink and then mingle!

At each event we invite one local business to showcase their products or services - so far we have had gin tasting, cake samples, a magic selfie mirror, holistic treatments and first aid training! Join us next on Thu 12th Sept, from 8.00pm at George’s Dining Room, Worsley.

Solutions Education is a specialist mathematics tuition company based in Boothstown. Launched in 2017, they are about to complete their second year in business. Set up by two local maths teachers, Adam Morris and Michael Quigley, they have had great success in helping students from age 7 to adult learners reach their potential. The key to Solutions Education success is that they understand pupils’ need to feel confident in what they are learning – having a trained-tutor there to help you, encourage you and build your confidence in partnership with your growing maths skills is central to this learning process.

Solutions Education only employs tutors that are fullyqualified maths teachers with expert knowledge in their subject, allowing them to teach using a range of techniques including maths mastery. Maths Mastery is used across the country in primary and secondary schools to embed deeper-understanding and allow pupils to tackle reasoning and problem-solving questions seen in modern tests. Whether you are looking for a primary-school boost to reach the SAT standardised score, GCSE help or are looking for additional guidance with your A-level maths, Solutions Education is there to help. Being a local company, Adam and Mike are keen to give back to the community, so for every new starter who signs up before December and quotes ‘On Our Doorstep’, Solutions Education will provide TWO FREE sessions. Advice for the Top Table Guests 1. If possible, start looking for your outfit at least 12 months prior to the wedding.

6. Do not worry about your shape or size, the ladies in the shop wil be able to assist and advise you they will have come across this before. We all have hang-ups.

2. When you go looking for your outfit, be openminded. Sometimes outfits need a body in them - they have no ‘hangar appeal’. Very often a lady falls in love with something she dismissed at first.

7. The only opinion that really matters is yours. If you feel good in the shop, you will look and feel amazing on the day.

3. Give consideration to the time of year, venue or location of the wedding when choosing your outfit. 4. It’s adviseable to avoid High Street stores. You may run the risk of a guest wearing the same outfit. Stick to a specialist.

8. Choose a shop that offers an alteration service your outfit should fit you perfectly. 9. A good independent shop can advise you but the final decision should be yours. 10. Enjoy the experience - being a Top Table guest should be memorable for all the right reasons.

Happy Shopping xxx

5. It isn’t necessary to spend a fortune to look a million dollars.

THE PETERLOO MASSACRE O

ne of the most momentous events in local and national history came to pass two hundred years ago.

On August 16th 1819 the Peterloo Massacre took place on St Peter’s Field, Manchester. About 60,000 people had gathered on St Peter’s Field, near the later Free Trade Hall. Many had walked long distances, behind banners, from outlying towns, such as Middleton, Oldham, Bolton and Rochdale. Numerous women and children were present to hear speeches asking for parliamentary representation at a time of poverty and unrest. Despite the peaceful nature of the crowd the magistrates were unsettled and read the Riot Act. When this had little effect they ordered in the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry Cavalry to clear the scene and arrest the speakers. These drunken soldiers ran amok and lashed out at the crowd with their sabres. Following the recent military victory at Waterloo, the event was soon named the Peterloo Massacre. It is estimated that there were approximately 654 casualties, including 18 dead. 61 of these came from the current Salford area, including two deaths. One was Martha Parkinson, from Eccles, who was from a local Methodist family. One of the ironies is that both sides of the massacre came from the same neighbourhoods. John Burgess, who was a leading founder of many local Methodist chapels, was one of the Yeomanry who is recorded as using his sabre to injure a protester. There are many commemorations taking place this year and a memorial is being built close to the original site, in front of Manchester Central. Exhibitions are being held at John Rylands Library, The People’s History Museum and the Working Class Movement Library. We are delighted that the spectacular Peterloo Tableau will be housed at Salford Histories Festival which will take place at Walkden Methodist Church, Saturday 21st September, 10am-4pm. Entry is FREE. There will be displays, talks, stalls, refreshments and a presentation of the Frank Mullineux Award at 1pm by the Ceremonial Mayor. Talks include:-

10.30-12.30 | Walkden Heritage Trail | Mike Corless 12-1pm | Liverpool to Manchester Railway | David George 1.30-2.30pm | Recent archaeological discoveries in Salford | Mike Nevell 2.30-3.30pm | Building the Manchester Ship Canal | Judith Atkinson 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

SEASONAL JOBS DOWN AT THE ALLOTMENT! by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

Milk Bottle Recycling

Wildflowr Barrow

Building our Gazebo

/'&3&+'!/'&3&+'!/'&3&+'"

The Plotters decided to help save the planet so we now recycle everything possible! It’s amazing what can be done with plastic milk containers - remove one side, fill with compost, sow your salad crops and they fit nicely between rows of carrots in a raised bed - maximising space usage. An old wheelbarrow ready to be scrapped has been turned into a miniature wildflower meadow with some compost and wildflower seeds from the RHS.

If like many, you stop cropping rhubarb at the end of July, it’s a good idea to give the crowns a good covering of farmyard manure. Sweet peas need to be kept ‘tied-in’ and ‘dead- headed’ to encourage more flowers to come through. Onions and Shallots will be ready for lifting soon and if you have some early results, don’t be tempted to bend the tops to speed the process, this was once the tradition but, it doesn’t improve your crops.

Don’t let the pretty summer weeds run to seed or they will give you grief next Spring. Remember “1 year’s seeding brings 5 years weeding”, with associated backache!

If you have sown sprouts, broccoli or kale be ready for the inevitable onset of early Autumn winds. Make sure your roots are well bedded, a little soil up the stem will help them stand firm and a stake to add support is also welcome.

Harvest your crops as soon as they are ready, if you leave them too long they may be bigger but may also become ‘woody’ and lose their flavour.

If you’re interested in an allotment, contact the Secretary of the Salford Allotment Federation at carolyn.collins@me.com
