Perfect Preparation for Infant School and Beyond Bolton School's Nursery Class for 3 and 4 year olds, which launched in 2012, continues to excel in ensuring young children are school-ready. Teacher Mrs Browning explains what the class is all about: “We help prepare young children for the move to Infant School and beyond. Whilst girls and boys enjoy lots of play-based fun, there are also more structured classes to support language, literacy, phonics and maths, and a range of activities including attendance at our Infant School assemblies, music lessons, Spanish lessons and swimming lessons. “The class represents the perfect choice for those families who want to join Bolton School at an early stage. It ensures children are :schoolready’ in every way. We achieve this through a combination of formal and informal

learning. The children follow a play-based curriculum and are provided with a mixture of independent, child-initiated activities and structured, teacher led activities; examples include daily phonics sessions, daily Maths Mastery practical lessons, weekly Cookery School and themed units of work. Strong emphasis is placed upon developing politeness, good manners and good listening skills. Children here are happy and confident in their environment and quickly become independent learners.” A delighted parent, Mrs Chen, said: "The Nursery Class has been fantastic for Imogen. Even though she is a child who doesn't like change much, she settled in from day one. Mrs Browning and Mrs Patel provide a warm and caring environment to make her feel secure. Imogen shares her days in nursery with us and comes home full of exciting things she has done, like making pizza, play-

ing in the hairdressers, singing in Spanish and swimming lessons. We made the right choice to send Imogen to the Nursery Class.” An equally enthusiastic Mrs Pierson also praised the class: "My husband and I are delighted with the Pre-School Class. It is inviting and stimulating with many examples of the tasks of the day illustrated on the walls. Mrs Browning and Mrs Patel provide a warm and caring environment where our child feels secure, valued and encouraged.” Separate from Bolton School’s

Nursery, this teacher-led class runs from 8.00am-3.15pm each day during term-time. Wrap-around care, before and after the class, is also available at Kidzone from 7.30am-6.00pm and during holiday periods. Parents can therefore opt for either fulltime, 51 weeks of the year care or a school term time pre-school education. The Fascinating Stories behind the Headstones at St. Mark's Churchyard, Worsley

n the churchyard there are about 4,000 grave plots. Some hold just one body, others may have as many as six. The first entry in the Burial Registers was on 10th July 1846 - 8 days after the consecration of the church. This was for Oliver Eckersley of Shaving Lane, who had died aged 2 years of croup (Plot Y2310). A quick glance across the area will reveal differing styles (gothic arch, table, tomb, flat stones, celtic cross); different headstone (marble, granite, stone). Behind and beneath these graves lie thousands of different stories, some of which are now coming to light. Who were these people? Nobility, former mayors, professionals, children (numerous), artisans, cotton spinners, agricultural labourers, colliers, art dealers, housewives, servicemen... the list is endless. Sometimes, the inscription on a headstone or a particular design attracts the attention of the researcher or passer-by, enough to spark a curiosity. To take one example - at the east end of the church, slightly towards the north side, stands a tall pink marble memorial stone with a curved top. The inscriptions face eastwards, towards the motorway. Part of the inscription reads: IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM AGNEW CREATED BARONET IN 1895. BORN OCTOBER 20TH 1825. DIED OCTOBER 31TH 1910. So who was he?

WILLIAM AGNEW (1825-1910) William Agnew was born in 1825, the son of Thomas Agnew and Jane Garnet Lockett. Thomas Agnew was Mayor of Salford when Queen Victoria came in 1851 and it was he who presented the Loyal Address on behalf of the borough in Peel Park. By 1835, he was the sole owner of a printselling and print-publishing business. Gradually the business moved into the world of dealing in pictures, to satisfy the wealthy Manchester merchants and mill owners who began to collect works of art by contemporary painters. He had also been largely instrumental in obtaining Peel Park for the town, and furnishing it with an admirable Museum. Sir William Agnew 1st Bt. Thomas and Jane had 13 children - 7 sons and 6 daughters. After his death in 1871, the business was left to 3 of his sons, including William. William 8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

married Mary Kenworthy on 25 March 1851 at St. John's, Manchester. They in turn had 6 children - 4 sons and 2 daughters. As a matter of interest, three of the brothers, George William, Charles Morland and Walter represented Cambridge University at rugby. The fourth son, Philip Leslie, went to Oxford University. William and Thomas Agnew became pivotal in the firm's rise in London, where Thos. Agnew & Sons first established itself in 1860, specialising in Old Master paintings. Aside from the art and publishing business, William Agnew became the Member of Parliament for South East Lancashire, 1880–1885. He was created a Baronet, of Great Stanhope Street, London, on 2 September 1895 on the recommendation of Lord Rosebery. William and several of the Agnew family were buried in the churchyard. THE STORY OF THE CITY AND OLD DICK EVANS

ld Dick Evans – belonged to a miner who lived in New Manchester, a small mining community between Tyldesley and Walkden, the area is known locally as “The City”. In the 1800s there were several active collieries in the area. I understand the City was called this to attract miners from Manchester, it had common names like Shudehill, Gatley Road and of course City Road. The village had a cricket field, shops and a chapel, where two of my children were the last to be christened there before it closed. City Road and Lower New Row were unmade when we lived there, probably the worst road in the area. Some doctors even refused to come down the road as it caused damage to their cars. In those days many walkers came through the City as there were many public footpaths leading to Walkden and Little Hulton. The dog’s grave could be clearly seen at the side of a well made gravel path and people often left flowers on the grave and almost everyone stopped to read the plaque. Children in the City picked flowers and left them at the grave stone. The road was eventually engineered and covered with tarmac by the coal board as a goodwill gesture - mainly because they intended to use the roads for their trucks, as they planned to open-cast (mine) the area. However due to strong local resistance and the great crested newt, that never happened. The roads were never adopted by the council to this day they remain unadopted. We do not know what kind of dog Old Dick Evans was, but he must have been incredibly loyal to his master who trained him to take his owner’s lunch to nearby Madam’s Wood pit every day. The three local pits: Ellenbrook, Gately and Madam’s Wood were connected by a mineral line railway. 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Tragically on his way to the pit one day Old Dick was hit by a coal truck travelling from Ellenbrook to Madam’s Wood, this would have been only few hundred yards from the City. His distraught owner laid him to rest and was determined to create a long-lasting memorial to his faithful companion who had given his life to serving him. He had a memorial stone carved and placed at the edge of Four Acre field, close to the spot where he was killed. It has remained there for nearly 160 years. The stone has become weathered, but it is still possible to read the carved inscription which says: “IN MEMORY OF OLD DICK EVANS HE WAS KILLED OCTOBER 1862.” There is also lettering along one edge of the stone which has been damaged. It ends with the word “dog”. I imagine it originally echoed those simple words of praise used by all owners “GOOD DOG”. It is only my opinion that the stone should be moved as it is inaccessible - the path is closed by steel gates as Common Head Farm no longer exists. The footpaths are in a very poor state and seldom used by the public. The stone is in danger of being undercut by rising waters and erosion and falling into the brook. Hopefully, with the landowner’s permission, it can be saved and moved to a safer place on Mosley Common Green or the Lancashire Mining Museum in Astley Green, where it will be preserved and appreciated by the local community and the wider public. People will learn the story of the loyal dog who gave his life serving his owner. His memory will live on as intended when the stone was carved all those years ago, and Old Dick Evans was laid to rest as his owner mouthed those words one last time, “Good Dog”. DETERMINED SUPPORTERS VOW TO RACE FOR LIFE People are being urged to look beyond lockdown by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Manchester. The charity’s much-loved events are aiming to return to the city this autumn but with socially distanced measures to keep participants safe. Money raised will help scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, saving lives as the charity fights back from the impact of the pandemic. Every year around 42,300 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West and one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime. The Race for Life events, which take place at Heaton Park on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th October, are open to people of all ages and abilities. There are also events taking place in Tatton Park, Wigan, Oldham, Leigh and Stockport during September and October. Events include a 3K, 5K, 10K as well as Pretty Muddy, a mud-splattered obstacle course. Siobhan Byrne, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson for Greater Manchester, said: “Race for Life offers the perfect opportunity for people across the region to run, walk or jog and raise money for lifesaving research.” “All 400 mass participation Race for Life events across the UK were cancelled last year to protect the country’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic. So this year, more than ever, we need people to enter the Race for Life - for the people we love, for the people we’ve lost and for the one in two of us who will get cancer.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, which has been in partnership with Tesco for 20 years, is an inspiring series of 3K, 5K, 10K, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy 12 ON OUR DOORSTEP

In June, over 390 Food Parcels were given out, feeding 641 people, including 240 children. Nearly 7,000kgs of food was given to other food clubs in Salford. We are making a difference, but demand is set to rise!

WHAT IS AN EXECUTOR? An Executor is a person (or persons) chosen by the maker of the will (the testator) who has the legal authority to finalise someone’s affairs after their death. As a legal representative, their main responsibility is to follow through on the wishes of the deceased and to make sure their estate (savings, property, etc) is dealt with legally. If you’ve already written a will with your chosen Executor(s), it’s important to review it regularly. A common problem with any appointed Executor is they may have already died themselves. Either that or they don’t want or are unable to take on the role, or are just uncontactable. Any of these situations can cause problems when it comes to distributing your estate.

But you don’t have to appoint friends or family, or even beneficiaries, as Executors. You can name a professional Executor, such as a Lawyer. In short, anyone can be your chosen Executor as long as they’re over 18 and are mentally capable of doing it. But, you should be able to trust them implicitly. In most cases, the Executor(s) will need a Grant of Probate in order to complete their legal requirements. The only exception to this would be for very small final estates. Though the Grant of Probate is a legal court document, most estates are dealt with in the Probate Registry unless there’s a formal dispute. Specscart makes it ‘Big’ Albert Gubay Award Winner to open doors to a large Experience Centre in Walkden

Award-winning eyewear store Specscart is all set to complete its much-awaited Big Move in the Walkden Town Centre by mid-August. It aims to create an even better shopping experience, where customers can walk in and check out the latest designs, or just learn what's new in the world of eyewear fashion. Specscart’s story started in 2017 when Sid Sethi won the Albert Gubay Awards at the University of Manchester. Then student, Sid won the award and was rewarded a retail unit and business support funding by The Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation. With a small funding of £5,000, a retail store and a big dream in his heart, then only 22 years old, Sid set out to revolutionise the eyewear industry. Now in 2021, Specscart’s growth has enabled the venture to move into a 10X bigger store in the new side of the centre. A modern-day startup story "A young University student hoping to start a new business, with no knowledge about retail, I was like a fish out of water. But the Walkden community 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

embraced not just me, but my idea and startup as well," says Sid. He got the idea for Specscart when he broke his glasses 3 days before his final exam at the University of Manchester. “In most of the stores, I felt like I was entering a dentist’s clinic. Decent, fashionable glasses cost well above £150-200. And they would be placed behind the counters, so you would hesitate to try them on and see how they felt. The posters would advertise science-y features like “freeform lenses” and “reflex vision”. The whole experience felt like you were purchasing a medical device and not something that’s probably the most intimate accessory that you can own. I want to provide high quality and trendy frames at affordable prices. And because we make glasses right here in Manchester, the turnaround time also is a lot less." What has been the recipe behind this growth? “We are just very hardworking and genuine in our approach. Customers see that and they love us they go above and beyond to keep us here, and we will do everything for them! The biggest

hallmark of our success is the number of repeat customers we get. They truly become a part of the Specscart family.” It wasn't all a smooth ride from the beginning. Although it sounds like a dreamy start, Specscart was located in a part of the centre with minimal footfall, surrounded by vacant stores. But the small Walkden startup got people’s love for their very family-like service, and that led to an unprecedented amount of word-of-mouth marketing. It was during this time that Specscart launched its iconic services - free protective coatings on lenses, quick turnaround time and free eye tests for everyone. When Specscart came on to the scene, free eye tests were only available through NHS vouchers. But this new age eyewear brand has opticians to serve everyone - regardless of age or whether they have a voucher or not.

What's next for Specscart? In just a short period, Specscart has already opened its in-house lab in Bury last year. With its large experience centre in the newer side of the Walkden Centre, Specscart has proved how their award was so well deserved. "No matter how big strides we take, we will always remember our first step. Since the very beginning, the Walkden community has given us a lot of support and encouragement.” “Our vision has always been to provide a memorable and pleasant buying experience to customers. Customers saw our genuine efforts and fully backed our independent business. It also enabled us to form family-like relations with them, with a lot of our business coming from repeat customers,” concludes Sid.

A PASSION FOR PLOTTING ...how it all began

Geoff Hamilton has been writing articles on life at the Macmillan Cancer Support allotment for over 6 years now. In that time the trend for ‘growing your own’ has gained momentum and millions across the UK are trying their hand at ‘The Good Life’. We thought it was time to shine the spotlight on Geoff and to share with you how his passion for plotting blossomed... In 2012, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer and part of my recuperation plan was to take more exercise in the open-air and to change my diet to include as much home grown and naturally produced foodstuffs as possible. By chance, the Bowel Cancer Support Group, based at Salford Royal, was asking for volunteers to help on a new Macmillan Project at Peel Green. My wife Jackie and I agreed to visit the site and meet the Project Leader, before committing to the idea; we had never grown veg before!! We met the Project Leader who introduced us to the allotment group chairman, Don Booth, who turned out to be no stranger to us. We had been friends for 50 years! They explained the plan to us and we did some trial potato planting on a small plot which had been unused for several years. We all had a cup of tea and agreed to meet up the following week and see how we felt about joining the Project. Regrettably, the Project Leader didn’t turn up again so, we felt lost and turned to Don and his wife Sylvia for help and advice, which they gave freely. The plot gave us a crop of potatoes, which we gave away at the Support Group meetings, in return for donations to Macmillan. By then, we were bitten by the ‘grow your own’ bug. Our companion volunteers, Mary and Charlie join us when they are free. We enjoy each others’ company, share ideas and give Charlie problems and challenges which he enjoys fulfilling, just to prove he can solve any problem! When a nearby larger, overgrown plot was offered to us we moved on to it and completely changed the layout and the method of operation. 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Over the years we have found new crops to grow and we now have: cabbage, cauliflower, purple sprouting broccoli, red and white onions, three varieties of tomatoes, basil, a grape vine and a kiwi vine, black, red and white currants, blueberries, sprouts and three varieties of potato. Our group is affiliated to the Macmillan charity, although we have changed the name of our organisation, we are now ‘The Salford Cancer Support Gardening Group’ and we aim to provide work, light or energetic, according to personal need, to anyone affected, personally or by family contact, by any kind of cancer. We operate in the open-air and meet each week for a progress meeting and to sort out work programmes. During the pandemic the plotters carried on tending the site and the crops, in line with the COVID rules, with several bonuses, since the nearby motorway fell silent (almost) and the birds could breathe and sing. We had the chance to sit, listen and appreciate a quiet world, which many people will never be able to enjoy, that is usually, full of the cacophony of modern life. This is a place where we are free, the crops we grow never complain, but we watch them do their best and eat them just because we can! Working from Home that’s not at Home For many of us, working from home or flexi-working was a dream that seemed just that little out of reach. The global pandemic, where we have all been required to do just that, seemed like a great opportunity to fulfil that dream. However, while it appeared to be an ideal scenario, the reality doesn’t always match our expectations. Setting up to work on the kitchen table or having a dedicated office room in the house, may work. The issues that many have found is that, particularly if you have a family, the environment is not quite as suitable as expected. Being at home can be distracting, someone (partner, children, even pets) quite often needs our attention. The home phone rings, household chores are in eye sight and can be an easy method of procrastination and sometimes just being in the house makes it difficult to get into the right mind set.

To keep it from feeling as if you’re boxed in, windows of all shapes and sizes can be installed and not just your simple shed windows, but full double-glazing to keep that noise out and allow you to focus on work. It also means that you can be in a more professional environment for those Zoom/Teams meetings with colleagues, clients or suppliers.

One solution that seems to be working is having a home office in the garden. Where once a shed was merely a shed; the advances made mean that it’s extremely easy to create additional space on your property that doesn’t require any planning permission and is relatively easy and inexpensive to do. Summer Houses and Garden Rooms are a great way to have an office at home but also provides that mental change where you physically leave the house to go into a dedicated location for work. Traditionally a summer house is an outdoor wooden structure and whilst they have been around for many years, more and more they are being converted into office spaces. Easy to put together, most are tongue and groove cladding to keep your office watertight and protect you from the elements.
