’ St Mark’s Church, Worsley: working towards the “Child Friendly Church Award” status
St Mark’s Church is aiming to achieve the “Child Friendly Church Award”. The scheme recognises the importance of the child’s presence at the heart of the Christian Community. All-age worship is a vital building block in a church’s growth and provides an opportunity for more people to get involved. Any church which achieves the Award is given a Child Friendly Church logo to display on its no0ce board so that families visi0ng or who are new to the area will know children are welcome.
At St. Marks we hold Children’s Church sessions every Sunday at 10.30am during term 0me. It is open to children from the age of 3.5 years.
Activities are based around a reading or message from the bible. We learn in a fun and interactive way through a mix of arts and cra!s, games, prayers and songs.
Children are also involved in special parade services in church and have the opportunity to do readings, prayers and songs.
Our vision is to lead, nurture and encourage all children in the word of the Lord, to listen, understand and to give children a voice in the church. We welcome you and hope you can join us. Carmen & Louise

A stroll around Roe Green After the inevitable “overeating” at Christmas Dinner, why not take a leisurely walk around Roe Green and contemplate its history. Roe Green is a picturesque village with a wealth of history. Here is a brief insight into its past and some of the local landmarks. IN THE BEGINNING... Roe Green is thought to have been named after “Roe Deer” which used to roam the area. The name occurs on the first known map of Worsley c.1590. It is in fact the original Village Green for Worsley, first mentioned in relation to a land dispute between Gilbert Sherrington of Wardley Hall and Richard Brereton of Worsley (who inherited Worsley in 1570). The Green was used as common land, an open space that could be used for grazing. It was also used for sporting activities, in particular Cricket, in the Victorian era. The hamlet grew around the green, where cottages were built by the Duke of Bridgewater. Inhabitants were employed in local mines, agriculture and handloom weaving. Up to the 20th century Roe Green was a 'working class' village, centred around a chapel, school and Co-op:INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCH The Methodist Church first came to Roe Green in 1808, with Humphrey Harper standing on a stone preaching to large crowds. The first church was built in 1855 and then rebuilt in 1884 which is the chapel we see today.
Original Roe Green Church built 1808
ROE GREEN INFANTS SCHOOL The building which is now Beesley Green Community Centre began life as Roe Green Infants School. It was built in 1892 and closed in 1968. This was an extension to the original school (white cottages next door), which was built in 1727 to provide both schoolroom and schoolmaster’s house. It was used as a Sunday and day school. ROE GREEN CO-OP The first Roe Green Co-op opened in 1858, in two rooms of a cottage, operating in the evenings. The Coop then grew to purpose built premises on Greenleach Lane, which is now home to Hair Eden. It was the 3rd and last Roe Green Co-op. The top story was a sewing room and the hoist to get provisions into the building can still be seen at the back.
Independent Methodists believed in abstaining from alcohol, which gave Roe Green the reputation of being a dry village... ...hence the absence of pubs in Roe Green. 8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

BEESLEY GREEN Originally Beesley Green was the western end of Roe Green, an integral part of Roe Green, It consisted mainly of farms. Beesley Green was named after the Beesley family who farmed there for several generations. In 1864, the Manchester-Wigan Railway cut through the area separating Beesley Green and Roe Green.
an Independent Methodist, built a large extension onto the original Sisley Cottage called “Littlewood”. The ground floor was a cotton warehouse and first floor a Preachng Room for the Independent Methodists, where they were to stay for the next 30 yrs. By 1836 he had 260 Sunday School Scholars attending, many walking miles to attend. 2) Roe Green Independent Methodist Church. Commemorating the baptism of some of England’s finest batsmen. Christened cricketers; Ernest Tyldesley, Johnny Tyldesley and England Test Captain Michael Vaughan. 3) Former Poor House next to Roe Green Cricket Club. Built in 1752 as an extension to the original school to educate poor boys - a bequest left in 1716 by one Thomas Colllier.

CONSERVATION AREA The railway provided an incentive to build new housing developments. In the 20th century roads were to open up the village even more. The East Lancashire Road was opened in 1934, and later the arrival of the motorway made Roe Green an easily accessible and desirable place to live. Further housing development brought new residents. To preserve the “village green” character of the area, Roe Green/Beesley Green was designated a conservation area in 1970 and is Salford’s largest conservation area. BLUE PLAQUES
In 2007, five Blue Plaques were erected on buildings around Roe Green, recognising individuals who have made a significant contribution in the area. You may have seen them, they are located:1) Littlewood Cottage on the corner of Greenleach and Lumber Lane. In 1824, Cotton Merchant/Mill Owner Richard Clarke,
4) “Aigburth”, Lumber Lane, opposite Littlewood. Built using the proceeds of the J.T. Tyldesley County Benefit in 1906. The Tyldesley family lived here on retiring from their shop in Roe Green. It was named after Liverpool’s cricket ground “Aigburth” where Ernest Tyldesley’s made his county debut. 5) Dinamics Hairdresser, Greenleach Lane. This was the former house of the Tyldesley family and birth place of Ernest Tyldesley. SPARROW PARK (opposite Post Office) A memorial seat dedicated to Bert Tyldesley. Funds raised by Roe Green Methodist Church, local residents and Worsley Civic Trust. The Inscription reads: “In fond and grateful memory of Herbert Lyon Tyldesley MBE, Bert, a gentleman, writer and local historian and last Tyldesley of the famous cricketing family to live on Roe Green....But through it all I left my heart where it was plainly seen, midst the fields and woods and people in the village of Roe Green.” Many thanks to Pauline & Jean from Friends of Roe Green for providing material for this feature. TREAT YOUR BODY TO A 7-DAY DETOX
Now that the Festive season is behind you, are you feeling in need of a boost? This 7-Day detox plan will give your liver a rest, re-energise you and help you shed a few pounds. The programme is not highly restrictive and won’t leave you short on nutrients, but you will need to avoid a number of foods which can stress your body.
Foods to Exclude
• Tea and coffee. The caffeine in these drinks is a strong stimulant. Instead, drink fruit or herbal teas, or chicory/dandelion coffee • Sugar, honey, syrup & foods containing added sugar like fizzy drinks • Salt and highly salted or smoked food such as bacon, smoked fish, crisps, stock cubes and soy sauce, plus many ready-meals. Use lo-salt, black pepper, herbs, garlic and ginger for adding flavour • Alcohol • Wheat and wheat-based products like flour, most cereals, bread, pasta. Wheat is a common source of food intolerance, so try miso, oats, spelt or millet flour as an alternative • Dairy produce eg milk, cheese, butter, yoghurt. Try soya milk and yoghurt instead • Eggs and egg products • Red meat and non-organic white meat • Artificial food additives including sweeteners
Foods to Include
• Fruit and unsweetened fruit juices • Vegetables • Fresh fish and oily fish like salmon, tuna and sardines canned in water or tomato sauce • Beans and lentils • Tofu and quorn • Potatoes, brown rice and rice noodles • Oats, rye crackers and oatcakes • Unsalted nuts and seeds • Extra virgin olive oil • Water – at least 2 litres per day
In addition to your diet, try to take time out for yourself to lower your stress levels. Get some exercise out in the fresh air or visit the gym, soak in a bath to which you have added Epsom or mineral salts or get a lymphatic massage.
And if you’re brave enough have a cold water blast at the end of your shower in the morning to re-invigorate you. It does work! by Karen Pheassant, owner of Ladies Workout Express on the Swinton Worsley border 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Testimonial from a happy client:“Rick Tsang did a fantastic job on both mine and my wife's car. My wife's VW Beetle had a very bad score along the front passenger side bumper and after a couple of hours of work from Rick, the bumper is brand new. You honestly would not know that anything had happened. My own Mercedes was very badly stone chipped. Due to the car being metallic black you can spot any blemishes on the paint from a mile away. Standing back from the car now, you honestly can't spot them. On a very close inspection I actually found it hard to locate where they had been. I am very particular about my car and very fussy about the paint finish. I am absolutely delighted with the end result, far better than I expected and would not hesitate in recommending ChipsAway Worsley.” If your car’s body work needs repairing, contact ChipsAway Worsley on

Study with Kip McGrath “Any child can learn if they are taught properly”
The first Kip McGrath Education Centre opened its doors in 1974 with the founding principle; “any child can learn if they are taught properly.” The company has rapidly expanded to c.700 centres operating in 20 countries worldwide.
The major differences at Kip McGrath are that we only employ qualified and experienced teachers and all are dedicated to individualised programmes so every student can be successful. All of the curriculum materials have been written and produced by the Kip McGrath organisation and are carefully graded so that progress is constant and accelerated.
Kip McGrath Walkden is run by Samantha Craig, a former teacher in one of Salford’s Beacon Schools, a Leading Maths Teacher and Educational Consultant. Samantha is also the Master Franchisee for the North West and West Midland Kip McGrath Centres.
‘Running a Kip McGrath Education Centre allows me to concentrate on what I do best teach. There is so much satisfaction in my job, working with children of all ages and seeing them grow in confidence as they get to grips with the things they have always found hard at school. Whether it’s learning tables, doing long division or long multiplication, comparing fractions, telling the time, or simply making a story more descriptive, it’s great to see the smile on their faces when they’ve got it! The Walkden Kip McGrath has been fully refurbished over the summer so that the students have a really nice learning environment.
The students get lots of praise and rewards for their achievements.

Secrets of Middlewood - Part I
In the aftermath of World War II, the euphoria of victory over Nazi Germany quickly faded, when it became apparent that a new threat was emerging in the shape of the Soviet Union.
The Blockade of Berlin, the food and supplies Airlift to the beleaguered City which became necessary for its survival, as well as other provocative acts in Soviet-occupied Eastern Europe, all demonstrated that Freedom was not on the Soviet agenda. The “Cold War” which was to last almost 40 years, had begun. Very soon after the general demobilisation of British forces after the War, defensive preparations began for what it seemed might be the next conflict. But these preparations were of necessity secret, since any open activity could be considered aggressive and an excuse for further escalation in the “Arms Race” by the Communist Bloc.
Despite the advent of the “atomic bombs” having been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, conventional war with the Soviets was still considered to be a possibility.

The “Cold War” Defences in Worsley
That meant a probable repeat of bombing raids so a new anti aircraft gunnery network needed to be constructed to protect the nation. Thus, the Manchester Gun Defended Area came into being and Middlewood was chosen as the site for an AAOR (Anti Aircraft Operations Room), staffed by the RAF.
Built on the terrace of the demolished Worsley New Hall, the AAOR was completed in 1952 and formed part of a ring around the city, to detect and then engage with guns sited elsewhere, any hostile aircraft. “Room” was very much a misnomer, for the AAOR consisted of a huge concrete bunker, windowless and massive, partially built into the hillside. Inside it had two levels, each accessed by canopied heavy doors to the outside and a complex of rooms for a resident staff of both sexes.
The Gun Director, from his dais, presided over Operations within his sector and had the ability to co-ordinate not only with other AAOR’s in the MGDA Area, but also nationwide. Everything from Radio Communications,
Bottom Entrance
One of the blast-proof canopied entrances
De-contamination (presumably in the event of a nuclear attack), Gun Direction, through to the more mundane such as a Canteen and sleeping quarters were accommodated within the “Room” of the AAOR.
The outside world of Worsley knew little of this. The only visible external signs were two enigmatic towers which barely peeked above the ancient beeches of Middlewood. These lattice structures, rather like a modern high voltage pylon, were each topped by a horizontal lattice cross. To those interested in WWII artefacts these would have been familiar, since they were identical to those which stood all along the East Coast and detected incoming German bombers. Such was the condition of Worsley’s AAOR until 1958, when the march of technology made the entire Manchester Gun Defended Area and its systems redundant, a mere six years after its completion! The reason was that aircraft were no longer considered to be a threat. The name of the game now was “ICBM’s “ (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles), against which it was considered there was no defence - other than to possess some of your own. Hence, the “Nuclear Deterrent” was born.
So, after dismantling all its equipment and towers, ownership of the Middlewood facility was transferred to the Royal Navy Air Service who used it as a food storage area attached to RNAS Riseley until 1961 when it was bought by Salford City Council. The Council used it as a Civil Defence installation,
A radar tower foundation
with Lancashire County Council, with a responsibility for the area from Stretford to Turton, reporting to the Main Control at Preston. In 1968, when the Civil Defence Corps was disbanded, the building was put into “Care and Maintenance” until 1974, when it was sold to Manchester County Fire Service. They, in turn, sold it to a local gun club for use as an indoor range in the early ‘90’s. Finally, its ownership rests with a local property investment and development company.
Through all these changes the building has remained intact. True, the interior has been altered a number of times to satisfy different owners, but as late as 2002 it still held many evocative memories; signage, documents, wall maps etc., of its Cold War role. Sadly, some vandals have defaced its grim grey walls with spray-painted graffiti, littered the area with the debris of nocturnal revels and at some time gained access to the interior to do the same there. But their destructive efforts seem to barely scratch the surface of a building which is quite awe-inspiring in its monolithic presence. It is easily accessible if you fancy a walk (permitted on certain paths) through Middlewood. Simply take the road to the left of the Garden Centre, past the Scout Hut, for approximately 300m. You cannot miss the great black cube that confronts you amongst the trees. Written by John Kirwin
