Welcome It’s countdown to Christmas time! It’s a busy time of year with so much to organise and hundreds of gifts to buy, but take some time to enjoy the build-up. It’s a magical time for children and there are so many festive activities in our local area. Watch the Worsley Village lights switch-on and visit Santa’s Grotto, partake in some carol singing, take a trip to the Manchester Christmas Markets, go ice-skating.... Find more ideas and events in the What’s On guide and Festive Activities feature! Amidst the fun, it’s also a time of giving. Help make a less fortunate child a little happier this Christmas - drop a new toy into Beesley Green Community Centre for the “Cash for Kids Toy Appeal”. If you love animals, perhaps you can help our local RSPCA in their most challenging months. A special thank you to Zenna Barry, local photographer, who has supplied the fantastic photo on the front cover. To see more of Zenna’s work visit www.zen-photographic.co.uk.

Boothstown Village Hall A Real Community Project that Needs Your Help! Thanks to a local independent committee, the old St Andrew’s school building in Boothstown has recently re-opened as the Village Hall, a community run facility. The building has for many years been managed by the St. Andrews C.E. School and used by both the school and community groups. However, since the school opened its new extension, the buildings were no longer required and faced an uncertain future as the Church was not in a position to keep it open, thus leaving many groups without a venue, and very few alternatives in the local area.
So a committee comprising residents, user group representatives and local councillors has taken on the mammoth task of running the premises on Vicars Hall Lane. Upon take-over, the committee was given an estimate of £120k to bring the hall up to date and carry out necessary repairs. The boiler was broken, double glazing needed, roof repairs required and damp rectifying! The hall has been used for many years by the Scouts/Cubs, Guides/Brownies, Playgroup, After School Club, Badminton and Karate groups. It is also now home to the Ellenbrook & Boothstown Brass Band. The Committee needs your help to keep the facility open. You can help in many ways:• Become a “Friend” of the hall for a small annual subscription of £5 • Make a donation / hold fundraising events • Use the hall - hire it for parties, meetings, groups, clubs etc..... • Volunteer your time and skills (plumber, electrician, joiner, builder, painter etc..) The committee is currently applying for grants from various organisations and intends to widen this search for funding. If you can help, or would like to get involved:Email: boothstownvillagehall@gmail.com Phone: 07982 231062 Visit: www.boothstownvillagehall.org.uk

READY STEADY STORE and KEY 103’S CASH FOR KIDS ready steady store is a local self storage company with a difference. With one storage facility on Wardley Industrial Estate and another on Bury New Road in Manchester City Centre, not only do we serve local residents and businesses with all their storage needs, but we also passionately believe in being part of our local community. For the past three years, we have been an invaluable part of Key 103’s Cash for Kids appeal. They receive applications for toys for over 10,000 children in Manchester who are likely to wake up to nothing on Christmas morning. Throughout November and December our Manchester Central facility receives the
continuous stream of deliveries, donated by listeners and businesses alike. Cash for Kids have a secure location for all the toys collected to be stored, segregated and distributed from a central Manchester location. Household or business storage doesn’t have to be expensive. A locker, perfect for hiding Christmas presents in, starts from as little as £2.50 a week. And it’s flexible too.

Room for a little one ? Calling all animal lovers... This time of year is arguably the worst for our line of work because the festivities and the post-Christmas lean finances mean that very few animals are adopted over the cold winter months. This unfortunately impacts on our service to the RSPCA inspectorate who rely on us to help take in the animals they rescue.
Buddy & Mercy
Few people know that there are 170 RSPCA branches in England and Wales as well as a national RSPCA charity (who fund the
inspectorate and animal hospitals). Each branch is an independent charity that is self-funding, which means every branch is unique in terms of its wealth and range of services it can offer. Here at the Manchester and Salford Branch we channel our £250k annual income into exclusively helping as many animals as possible that the RSPCA inspectors rescue from cruelty, neglect and abandonment. We do not have our own animal shelter, instead we use 3 different private boarding establishments to house cats, dogs and rabbits, and we have a network of wonderful volunteer animal foster carers too. Each year we help over 300 animals, not much less than some of neighbouring branches with shelters. We pride ourselves on the work that we do and so whilst the low points are plentiful, the highs are in abundance each and every time we rehome an animal. You can follow the work that we do on our Facebook, Twitter and Blog - hold on to your seats, it's a rollercoaster ride! Get Outside and Beat the Winter Blues! It may be against your better judgement, but now really is a good time to take up outdoor exercise to beat the winter blues. Here’s why: Being closer to nature gives us a psychological boost – with greenery, water and mountains especially cheering. When added to the natural mood enhancement we get from exercise, and the self-satisfaction we get from doing something that takes more self-motivation, then the winter blues don’t stand a chance! Exercising in daylight will increase your production of Vitamin D, which would otherwise suffer during the winter months and you’ll lessen your chances of suffering from seasonal affective disorder. You’ll boost your immune system while reducing your exposure to cold and flu bugs which proliferate indoors in the winter. As the body has to work harder to maintain a safe core temperature, you will burn more calories by exercising in the cold – by around 12%! Winter may bring the chance to try new exercise options - tobogganing, snowboarding, ice-skating – to add variety and fun to your schedule.
Options for outdoor exercising include winter walks, hiking, running, cycling or horse-riding. Try running along the beach, or taking a brisk walk in the woods. No need to push yourself hard, instead, take the time to notice your environment and the changes that are going on around you.
Outdoor exercise does have its risks though, so it’s important to take a few precautions to stay safe: Talk to your doctor if you have any health issues that could be aggravated by winter conditions and follow his/her advice. Wear the right clothes. Dress in layers so that you can take them off as you warm up and put them back on once you stop. Wear a hat and gloves to reduce heat loss from your extremities. Choose the proper footwear. Invest in a good pair of outdoor winter socks, sock liners and waterproof shoes. Footwear should also provide good traction to prevent slipping. Don’t forget sunscreen if you’re going to be out for any length of time. If it’s a sunny day, take your sunglasses too. If you’re exercising in the dark, then wear reflective clothing, and if you are on your own, take a mobile phone just in case you have a fall. Drink plenty of fluids; you’re just as likely to become dehydrated in the cold as in the heat from sweating

Winters Walks Monton & Roe Green Loopline Heritage Trail
It may not feel like the ideal time of year to go out walking, but if you wrap up warm you'll soon find out that winter walks can be fantastic and invigorating. Here’s a suggestion for a Sunday afternoon, or post-Christmas dinner walk! The Monton and Roe Green Loopline Heritage Trail is a circular walk which begins and ends in Monton village and follows the 'loopline', the old route of the Roe Green railway line, before returning along the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal. The walk is 2 miles and should take about 1 hour to complete. It is accessible for wheelchair users, but in wet weather the path alongside the canal can become very muddy. The walk begins at Monton Green - the heart of Monton’s conservation area, which also incorporates the Unitarian Church; a lodge built in 1875 to the Earl of Ellesmere's former estate; and a club house with bowling green. 18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Monton Green was part of the Earl of Ellesmere’s estate, but in November 1895 he made it an open space for public use. The walk takes you through the site of the old Monton Green Station, which operated for over 80 years before closing in 1969, and then continues along the Roe Green Loopline to the remains of Old Worsley Station. You are then brought out onto Worsley Road, directed through to Worsley Green and then proceed along the famous Bridgewater Canal back towards Monton. On your return to Monton, look out for the famous lighthouse - the 36 foot high landmark built by local resident with an eye for the unusual! If, during or after, your walk, you fancy some refreshments, there are several cafes and pubs in Monton and Worsley. For full route details, download your full guide at www.visitsalford.info/documents/montontrail.pdf Information source: Visit Salford

i-Lipo : The intelligent alternative to liposuction i-Lipo™ is the latest in laser lipolysis, offering you a way to achieve inch loss and body contouring with no pain, no needles and no down time. How does it work? The i-lipo uses a low level of visible red laser light to stimulate the body's natural processes that empty the stored fat contents inside fat cells. The laser energy creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, temporarily opening pores in the cell wall through which the fat contents can escape. The contents are then transported around the body to the tissues that will use them during metabolism to create energy. Thus i-Lipo is not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. This metabolism of the contents permanently removes them from the body leaving smaller fat cells and giving you inch loss.
i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men and women.
What Svelte Body clients say.... Ann from Worsley - Oct 2011:I lost several inches on my first session which amazed me from such a simple, fuss free and painless procedure. After 8 sessions I lost the equivalent of a dress size around my stomach area. Free use of the power plate was an added bonus & helped tone the rest of my body. In just 4 weeks I feel more comfortable in my bikini & its given me the incentive I need to keep on exercising. The therapists were always friendly, accommodating & flexible with the timing of appointments. From Louise - Boothstown - Oct 2011:I had been fed up with my hip & thigh area for as long as I can remember. Size 8-10 in clothing I doubted that i-lipo would have any effect. After 5 sessions the results began to show & my clothes proved it. The appearance of the area treated also improved - Amazing ! Over the 8 sessions I managed to treat both areas & lost a total of 11 inches. My clothes feel so much better & I am feeling much more confident wearing them. I am really pleased with the results & would recommend you give it a try. After all, if there is an answer why suffer !

A Victorian Christmas
Have you ever wondered what a truly traditional Christmas would be like? Worsley is about to celebrate it’s annual Christmas light switch-on (Fri, 2nd Dec) and the festivities include a Victorian Santa's Grotto - just one of the many traditions we have inherited from the Victorians.
No era in history has influenced the way in which we celebrate Christmas as much as the Victorians.
Plus, the invention of the railway allowed families, who had moved away in search of work, to return home for a family Christmas.
Before Victoria's reign started in 1837, we had not heard of Santa Claus or Christmas Crackers. No Christmas cards were sent and most people did not have holidays from work. The wealth and technologies generated by the industrial revolution of the Victorian era changed the face of Christmas forever.
CHRISTMAS EVE On Christmas Eve the last of the relatives arrived for the holidays - not only the immediate family, but aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents too. It was a celebration devoted to the family.
Through his book “A Christmas Carol”, Charles Dickens preserved the Christmas customs of olde England and is credited with the great revival of Christmas traditions in the Victorian era.
Christmas, Victorian Style
In the afternoon, a long awaited event, the doors of the parlour opened and the children finally saw the glorious Christmas tree with it's candles, tinsel, beautiful hand-made ornaments, sweets, ribbons and strings of popcorn and cranberries. Small wrapped gifts hung from branches under the tree were the larger ones.
...was a joyous occasion and not a commercial affair. First and foremost, it was a religious holiday, but giving and family were important themes.
Everyone exchanged gifts and after the grand unwrapping, the children played with their toys and thoughtful handmade gifts were admired.
Christmas Holidays were born. The wealth generated by the industrial revolution allowed middle class families to take time off work and celebrate over two days Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Next, every took part in a programme of entertainment - reciting poetry, performing short plays, playing music and group singing. Afterwards, sleepy children were sent to bed as well as tired adults!

A Traditional Victorian Christmas Scene
CHRISTMAS DAY ...started with Christmas Mass. Then after picking up the Christmas poultry or meat, a flurry of cooking took place. Turkey was not traditionally served in England until the late 19th century. Instead goose, chicken or roast beef took pride of place on the Christmas table, followed by Christmas Pudding made from beef, raisins and prunes. After Christmas dinner, clean-up, and afternoon naps, the festivities continued with visits to friends. Most shops were open. It was unusual for any of the trades to take a day off. The less fortunate sung Christmas carols door-to-door hoping for donations of food, drink or money. Families also went Christmas caroling to entertain their neighbours (imagine if we did that now!). BOXING DAY ...was devoted to Charity. Gifts of money were put up in small boxes to be given to servants and tradesmen, and distributed to the needy in the area. Hence the name “Boxing Day.
The First Christmas Card
Items such as embroidered handkerchiefs, bookmarks and other useful gifts were lovingly sewn and crafted during the Autumn and Winter months. Children's toys originally tended to be handmade and expensive... but with factories came mass production and games, dolls, books and clockwork toys all at a more affordable price. Christmas stockings, became popular from around 1870. CHRISTMAS CARDS - The custom of sending printed cards was started by Henry Cole, who did not have time to write Christmas letters to all his relatives. So he asked an artist, John Calcott Horsley, to design a card. About 1,000 cards were printed, and those not used by Sir Henry were sold by the printer for one shilling. MINCE PIES - made with mincemeat and spices - were eaten for the 12 days of Christmas, ensuring good luck for the next 12 months of the year. According to custom, each of the twelve mince pies had to be baked by someone different.
THE CHRISTMAS TREE - began when Queen Victoria's German husband, Prince Albert, brought a tree over from Germany to Windsor Castle in the 1840's.
CRACKERS - Invented by Tom Smith, a London sweet maker in 1846. Originally, began as sweets wrapped in a twist of fancy coloured paper, but developed and sold much better when he added love notes (motto's), paper hats, small toys and made them go off with a BANG!
THE GIFTS - most were handmade, so were started many months before Christmas.
