Help Keep Monton Green and Clean Dog fouling has become a big problem in and around Monton and Dukes Drive Country Park. Monton Village Community Association has recently carried out a survey and over 15 sites in the area have been identified by residents as having consistent problems – and no doubt there are many more! Dog fouling is a health and safety issue, especially for children, as some diseases are carried by dog faeces. It is also anti-social to leave mess for someone one to inadvertently step in and then walk it into their home or shop. A large percentage of dog owners in Monton are very responsible and clean up after their pets. A small proportion unfortunately don’t.

Monton Village Community Association is working with William Harris from the Environmental Department at the Council. Monton Green Primary School are also pleased to get involved in the project, talking to pupils about caring for animals and also a reminding them to clear up after their dogs. Pupils will be asked to design a poster around this issue which MVCA will print and distribute in the shops and around Monton.

Christmas is a very busy time for everybody, decorating the house, wrapping presents, visiting family, cooking the turkey. Here are a few tips to take a little pressure away from the kitchen… d Make your cranberry sauce at the start of December this way it has had time to mature and will taste delicious. d Get all your vegetables prepared the day before and keep them in cold water overnight. d Once your turkey is cooked, strain off all the juices into a pan and add a splash of port, mix a little corn flour with some cold water and add to your pan. Gravy done! d Boxing Day comes and you’ve got all your leftovers? Chop the lot up and mix with some curry powder and a little coconut milk, pop it in the oven and you’ve got a nice little curry to eat. d What do you do with the turkey carcass? Give it the dog? Why not chop it up and cover it with some water and chopped vegetables, cook it for about 2 hours and you’ve got a lovely festive broth!

A Name, a Church, a Town…

ECCLES

Thanks perhaps to Spike Milligan, some people find the name “Eccles” amusing. Mention that you are from Eccles to most and there’s sure to be a snigger and a repeat of the name back to you in a Goon Show voice, Pity such folk, they know no better. Celtic Origins

Eccles, as a settlement, has a long long history and the clue is in the name itself. It goes back to long before the Anglo Saxons settled in this island, back to Romano-British times when Christianised Celts were the population and their word for a church was “Eglwys” (you will find that description on any church in Wales to this day). In turn, the word was derived from the Latin “Ecclesia“. Beginning to look familiar now? Place names of this nature, and there are more than 20 in Britain, having this “Eccles” root, are now regarded by most authorities as being a strong indication of the existence of Romano Celtic churches on such sites and that they survived the withdrawal of the Roman legions from Britain in 410AD and the turmoil of the Anglo-Saxon invaders over 100 years later. That means that Eccles may well have a Christian history that pre-dates the missionary zeal of both St. Columba and St. Augustine, by almost 200 years and that Eccles may have foundations stretching back more than 1600 years! So what proof is there, other than the name? Well, we have a long tradition and physical evidence even today, that a stone cross has always stood as a centrepiece of the town. The present Cross is recent, only 19th century, but it replaced a much more ancient one, which in turn, may have replaced an even more venerable one. And where might fragments of those two crosses be today? Where else but in the oldest building in the City of Salford - the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eccles. 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Two shafts of ancient crosses, excavated over the years between the town centre and the Irwell (Ship Canal) are now preserved in the Church. One is believed to originate from the 13th century. The second is captioned “Viking 10th century” but this identity is questionable. It has carved, interlaced knotwork, a common motif in Celtic art and adopted, much later, by the Vikings for their own artworks. In his book “Lancashire”, in 1951, Walter Greenwood claimed that this Cross was 5th century, several hundred years before the Vikings set foot in Britain. And what do we have today? We have the present ancient church of St. Mary the Virgin which dates back to Norman times in its foundations. We have mentions of a Rectory, where a church existed as early as 1111AD, again in 1170 and again in 1277. Whether this church was of wood or stone is unknown, but what is a fact is that the village was Eccles “the place of the church” - long before the present church existed. In other words, in Anglo-Saxon times. St. Mary the Virgin

The present church was first built in the 13th century, but very little remains of it. It possibly dated from 1277 when the “Rectory” came into the possession of the rich and powerful Abbey of Whalley, in the Ribble Valley, who upgraded its status to a Vicarage and sent monks to provide services. Prior to that the Benefice of the Parish was in the hands of the Barton family, from whom it passed to the Booth family – both families being remembered in the names of local settlements, Barton and Boothstown. Most of the present form of the Church owes its appearance to the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries although much repair, restoration and addition took place in the 18th century and major works in 1862.

The exterior of the church reflects these changes more than the interior. Built from local ashlar Bunter sandstone, not the most durable of building material, the replacement of many eroded blocks is very evident, particularly on the 15th century Tower. Both the Tower and body of the church feature battlements, perhaps reflecting a need for defence in troubled times, or simply a period design choice. The former graveyard, now cleared of most human remains, has an original oval shape said to be typical of Celtic church sites. Could this be a further pointer to the location of the hypothetical church of those Roman times? Could any traces still exist beneath the present church? What better place to build than on consecrated ground? The interior of the Church, in contrast to the outer, has an ancient ambiance and spirituality. Although not of awe inspiring dimensions, it is beautifully proportioned with a 4-bay Nave, east and west aisles, St. Katherine’s Chancel, a Clerestory and what was a further Chancel. The west Porch is 19th century but it shelters a massive and ancient oak door. The Church suffered to some extent in the Reformation with regard to some of its decorative details. The empty niches on the Nave pillars are bereft of the statues of saints that they once held, but these are compensated by a magnificent Reredos backing the Altar. Depicting saintly subjects, they are resplendent in gilded glory, befitting of any great cathedral. The Church has many marble wall plaques commemorating the great and the good of the past of the Parish. Most notable perhaps is the Brereton Tomb, dating from 1600, of Sir Richard Brereton, his wife Lady Dorothy and their only VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

child (sadly stillborn). The tomb has effigies of all three, with Sir Richard in Tudor armour and his wife with a neck ruff and elaborate headdress. Though Dorothy outlived her husband and remarried, she chose to lie beside her first husband in death. Both are believed to haunt Worsley Old Hall - the home they shared. Other relics in the Church include two sepulchral gravestones unearthed beneath the paving of one of the aisles - one showing an incised cross, the other a cross in relief. Neither carried the name of the presumed occupant beneath where they were found. They now stand in the Tower entrance. Behind the Brereton Tomb stand two coffin lids, one being that of John Gilbert, land Agent of the “Canal Duke” of Bridgewater. The Church also has a collection of silver items used in services, the oldest being two chalices dated 1618. No ancient stained glass has survived, but the Church has many superb windows. Not least of these, and probably the newest, commemorates William Worrall Mayo, born in Eccles in 1819. He initially studied medicine in Manchester, Glasgow and London before emigrating to the USA in 1845. After a colourful and varied career, he settled in Rochester, Minnesota and founded a medical practice. Together with his sons and a number of Partners, he created “the first integrated medical practice in the world”. In 1919, this was to become the Mayo Clinic - today the most famous medical and research facility in the world. His sons visited Eccles in the 1930s and donated the Mayo Window in his memory. It is located immediately to the left of the Tower entrance to the Church. St. Mary the Virgin, our much loved Parish Church, is a gem to delight all who revere history and ancient buildings.
