Acting Local Sime on as Swee ny Todd

The Jungle Book Production

In 2003, local professional actors Simeon Truby & Helen Kay opened Urban Stage Theatre School at Worsley Road United Reformed Church, Swinton. Their aim, to offer students 5 years to adults the opportunity to learn performing arts skills and train alongside highly qualified individuals from the entertainment industry. We have so many gifted young people in our region and we have welcomed over 500 students through the doors, with many now working professionally as actors and dancers. Both Helen and Simeon live in Swinton and perform at many of the repertory theatres and TV companies in Manchester and countrywide. Helen recently

appeared at Bolton Octagon in “Brassed Off” and Simeon is currently touring the country in “WarHorse”, seen by thousands during its two visits recently to The Lowry. Simeon continues in “WarHorse” until February 2015 which plays South Africa for 3 months. As a result of Simeon working with Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball in the West End hit show “Sweeney Todd”, Imelda agreed to become the Patron of Urban Stage. As part of this patronage, 3 scholarships in Imelda’s name have just been awarded for the first time to students, paying for a years’ tuition. “I know the power of drama and music. I know it makes us better human beings. I know how much it has meant to me.” Imelda Staunton OBE. For more information visit

Keeping Your Animals Happy this Christmas What must our animals think of Christmas? So many rich smells, bright colours, and half a tree suddenly appearing in the living room like it’s grown out of the floor. Of course, we humans try to make sure our pets enjoy the festivities too; a recent RSPCA survey showed that 91% of people will buy their pets a present at Christmas, and 18% will spend more on their animals than they will on their mother-in-laws. Presents are all very well, but the best gifts you can give your pets this Christmas are a little caution and a touch of extra compassion. Christmas can be scary and dangerous, so here are five top tips for keeping your beloved furries contented this December:1. Be wary of toxic foods: Chocolate is particularly bad, as are onions, nuts, blue cheese, grapes, raisins and mince pies.

2. Be careful with decor: Needles from trees can get stuck in paws, holly and ivy is toxic when eaten, and fairy lights have very chewable wires! 3. Keep a close watch if you host parties: Be strict about what treats your friends might slip your pets when you’re not looking. 4. Keep loud bangs to a minimum: including crackers, party poppers, champagne corks and fireworks . 5. Keep a little money spare for the vets: just in case! For more advice contact:-

Festive Beauty Hidden Beauty, a brand new salon, has just opened this October in the heart of Worsley Village. With 20 years experience in the beauty industry we asked them to share a few of their top tips for looking your best this festive season!

Nail Trends

Glowing Skin

Nails are the icing on the cake when it comes to dressing. Colours change every season to match the latest fashion trends.

Who doesn’t want a golden glow all year round? Tanned skin boasts a subtle radiance that can help you look healthier and fitter, giving you more confidence.

This winter, with the darker nights come deep, moody tones; think dark berry, rusty reds and gunmetal greys. For the party season, metallic shades will be a popular choice, adding some festive glitz to your outfit. Nudes still remain on-trend from very sheer to opaque. At Hidden Beauty we offer Acrylic or Gelish nails and can find the perfect shade to match the latest trends.

Christmas Party Looks The festive season is the perfect opportunity to try out a whole host of bold new looks. This year it’s about bold red lipstick, volume hairstyles, extra long lashes, strong eye definition and perhaps a touch of metallic eyeshadow. Eyelash extensions are one of the fastest growing treatments in the UK. Try our “Lash Perfect” semi-permanent eyelash extensions. La La Express lashes last 2-3 weeks.

Spray tans are a safe way to achieve a sun-kissed look and can also hide blemishes on the skin to create flawless looking skin. Here at Hidden Beauty we use Xen-Tan; a safe, high quality product which contains no toxic ingredients. In fact, there area a lot of ingredients such as Green Tea, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Shea Butter and Gingko Biloba which help to moisturise, strengthen and balance the skin.

Visit us for the new Temple Spa Red Carpet Skin Therapy Miracles range which gives you ‘photo-finish’ results in seconds. Use for everyday glamour or a quick fix for your big event.

Introductory Offer all full price treatments on your first visit to Hidden Beauty,

love... a slimmer C hristmas with

Slimming World

Join a friendly group near you to make your weight loss dreams come true

It's Christmastime and, as the carollers sing, 'is the time to be jolly. At Slimming World this time of year really can be... jolly delicious, jolly satisfying, jolly sociable and jolly slimming too! People often think that celebrating Christmas and enjoying the party season involves making a choice between being boring or blowing it when it comes to their weight loss campaign. But whether it’s Christmas Day or a Christmas party, it’s important to remember that it’s just one day and that it’s what you do every day that makes a difference to your weight. The key is to be flexible and plan ahead. Slimming World have provided us with some top party season strategies to make sure you sparkle this Christmas:l Before a big Christmas party, make sure you fill up on a healthy meal, like pasta, to set you up for the night ahead. Your body will absorb any alcohol more slowly, and you’ll be less likely to reach for high calorie snacks like crisps or nibbles or be tempted by a late-night snack. l If you struggle with late night munchies, ensure you’ve got something delicious to come home to, like a home-made chilli or curry you can heat up quickly and easily. They’ll be better for the wallet and the waistline – and tastier too! l Many restaurant menus can be found online now. If you’re eating out, check the menu first and choose the best option to help you stick to your slimming plan. Get a jacket potato instead of chips and request sauces and dressings on the side (then you can control the amount you eat). l Party buffets can be loaded with high-calorie and high-fat foods. Choose things like lean slices of ham or beef, chicken with the skin removed,

salmon or boiled eggs for a weight conscious way to fill up. Veg sticks, fruit and wholemeal sandwiches are a good way to satisfy your appetite too. Avoid fried foods and pastry-based snacks, as well as high-fat sandwich fillings like butter and cheese or mayo dips. l Alcohol is a challenge for the waistline at Christmas. Make drinks last longer by asking for a tall glass and adding lots of ice and extra diet mixers to spirits, or top up wine or lager with diet lemonade or soda. It’s a good idea to alternate alcoholic drinks with low calorie soft drinks to stay hydrated – and you’ll feel fresher in the morning too! l Hit the dance floor and incorporate some activity into your night out! l If you do over-indulge, don’t beat yourself up, you’re human - and it is Christmas! Just get straight back to your healthy eating plan. A great start is a big grilled breakfast with grilled lean bacon, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, eggs fried in low calorie spray, baked beans and wholemeal toast. Or make a huge pot of winter warming soup packed with scrummy veggies. See www.slimmingworld.com for some great recipes. EXCLUSIVE OFFER for readers joining a Slimming World group, mentioned below, by Christmas:Receive a FREE copy of the "Slimming World Christmas" book on production of this magazine. Bursting with festive bakes, cocktails, home-made gift ideas and a host of party nibbles, not to mention tasty ideas for leftovers too!

Don't wait until January - unleash the Christmas cracker in you for 2014! Join a local session:-

Battery Breakdowns Avoid the most common cause of breakdown this winter. Batteries are more likely to die in winter when cold temperatures hit as power output drops, batteries don’t recharge as well, more power is used with lights, wipers, heaters etc. and cars are left to stand unused over Christmas. However, problems can be avoided with a few simple tips to reduce the risk of battery failure...

CHARGE: If you only do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, invest in a modern battery conditioner/intelligent charger. These can be left connected to the battery and can prolong its life without overcharging it. LIGHTS OFF! Ensure all lights (sidelights, interior and boot lights) are turned off overnight. It can kill a battery when it’s cold. REDUCE THE LOAD: When starting a cold car, switch off everything electrical and dip the clutch to reduce the load on the battery.

AGE: If the battery is over five years old and there are signs of it struggling to start the car, get a new one. Don’t wait for it to fail on a cold winter’s day, leaving you waiting for roadside assistance! JJ Plunkett Ltd, based in Salford, can provide a wide range of new batteries or offer further advice. A family run business, prominent across the north west of England and based in Salford, they offer an unrivalled catalogue of car and commercial vehicle components including starter motors, alternators, batteries, lighting, heaters and air conditioning at competitive prices. RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it... A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.

1

The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.

2

The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.

3

Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

4

Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with

5

a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps. Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.

6

7

The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!

Fitness Resolutions...

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY As one year approaches it's conclusion, another year of possibility beckons. This can be a great opportunity to take stock of our lives and re-evaluate our dreams and aspirations. Although as individuals, we are wholely unique, the topic of fitness or losing weight is one that makes its way on to many of our New Year ’s resolutions lists. As many a successful coach will tell you, consistency of training is half the battle. We have all started a new fitness programme to find that weeks or months later we have lost motivation, got bored or lost focus of why we where doing it in the first place. Sometimes that may be because that type of exercise was a bad fit for us, other times it may have been that we just lacked that little bit of support to keep us on track. There are many things we can do to increase our chances of success, however sooner or later, life is going to get in the way and your ability to remain focused and committed is going to be fully tested.

SHARE THE EXPERIENCE We believe the power of community is a wholely underestimated tool that can make a real difference to your long- term relationship with fitness. Ultimately, no hobby - fitness or otherwise is likely to succeed if you don't enjoy doing it, and for that matter why should you!?? That's why sharing in the experience with somebody else can make your experience more fun, and more likely to last. That's not to say a Bootcamp like ours isn't going to be tough at times, but if you can share in the experience, sweat together, ache together and FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

have a laugh whilst doing it, then you're half way there. There's something inherently satisfying w h e n s h a r i n g t h e e x p e r i e n c e of hardship and getting through to the other side. Group exercise is no different - battling through a tough session and comparing notes at the end is as equally important as that last push up. It's all part of the experience. Being asked by a fellow bootcamper why you weren’t able to attend last week's session might seem like a small matter, but ultimately it’s these small things that re-enforce that sense of camaraderie and feeling of belonging. We believe wholeheartedly in the power of community; not only for practical reasons but we believe that all of life’s experiences are that much richer when shared. We love our community and if any of this resonates with you, the chances are, you will too! Please message us if you would like to try one of our sessions, we would love to hear from you.

Local History

BLACK DIAMONDS

Local Coal Mining Astley Green Colliery, Pit Yard Image courtesy of Astley Green Colliery Museum (AGCM)

That’s what my Granny used to call coal and she knew what she was talking about, both are carbon after all… Back in 1950, as far as we were concerned, coal was far more valuable, it was the difference between being warm - or cold. Times were hard and in the face of bitter winters, she probably used the enticing description to motivate me into joining her on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal, to pick the precious black and shiny stuff that warmed our house. With a battered old pram and a hessian sack, we would wrap up well and walk the stretch between Worsley and Boothstown, where the banks are raised above the surrounding fields. This was the best place, because those raised banks are composed largely of tipped slag and coal fragments - waste from the local mines (“pits”), that dotted the landscape to the immediate north. It was also a stretch where kindly “bargees” enroute to Barton Power Station with coal cargoes, might shovel some onto the towpath for our benefit ! It may be astonishing to most of our present population, who see no evidence of mining today, to learn that we stand on what was once one of the largest and most productive coalfields in Britain. About 300 million years ago this area was a vast tropical swamp, similar to the Amazon rainforest where, over millennia, vegetation died, was covered and compressed, into what we now call coal. And there it stayed, immense stored energy deep in the earth, almost ignored until about 300 years ago. 42 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Here and there it occurred on the surface, laid bare by erosion and was called “seacole” then it might be used to warm a home or by a blacksmith to work iron.

The Coal Boom All that changed with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, when the demand for energy soared and wood was scarce and inefficient. Mines were sunk everywhere and at Worsley underground canals, 52 miles of them, were hand hewn from the rock to connect all the Duke of Bridgewater’s mines to his new Canal, to convey coal to Manchester. So abundant were the coal seams and so thick (at Worsley 4 feet thick, elsewhere up to 7 feet) that a shaft sunk almost anywhere found coal at different levels. Soon the landscape became studded with lattice towers of iron, surmounted by winding wheel headgear which lowered “cage” lifts full of men, women and children (as young as 6 years of age), deep into the earth to the coalfaces, to work in darkness and dust to harvest the valuable mineral. Such workforces numbered in the thousands and, what had been small agricultural villages, grew into squalid mining towns to house them. With black faces permanently seamed with coaldust and their lungs choked by pulmonary diseases, they sur vived... but not for long. Death was a frequent visitor, if not from disease, then from tunnel collapse or explosion of “fire damp” gas. Black hills of slag waste from the mines surrounded their towns, many of which still exist, hidden by scrubland. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Local History

Gin Pit Colliery, Astley, 1935 (Image: Manchester Library)

Cable railway, Mosley Common Colliery, 1948 (Image: Manchester Library)

The Lancashire Coalfield stretches from the foothills of the Pennines to well beyond Wigan in the west, from the Ribble Valley in the north to mid-Cheshire in the south. Beneath much of that present landscape the geology must resemble a gigantic termites nest of shafts, tunnels and galleries, slowly subsiding into the voids left by the extracted coal. The lakes that we locally call “flashes” are testimony to such collapse. Some are very large indeed, such as Pennington Flash near Leigh, now a nature reserve and a haven for waterfowl. The scale of all this mining can scarcely be comprehended today, but at its height in 1907, there were 358 collieries (“pits” in our local parlance) in production, with a total workforce of 100,000 men! They extracted more than 20 million tons of coal annually in the first quarter of the 20th century until demand slackened and eventually all mining ceased locally in 1993. Coal and its pollution, its “carbon release”, is now regarded as an undesirable fuel in this country. Among the last mines to close, in 1968, was Mosley Common near Ellenbrook. Mosley Common was a “Superpit”, with many shafts and huge coal reserves (which still remain unexploited to the full). At its peak it employed 2,400 workers above and below the surface.

Underground Canals at Worsley during the 1960s

Not far from where the executive homes of Ellenbrook now stand was the fringe of the pits slagheap, now covered by a dense stand of birch trees. Its near neighbour, Astley Green Pit, is the sole remaining visible relic of what was once a mighty industry. Sunk to exploit the deep coal seams beneath Chat Moss and employing 2,000 miners, Astley closed in 1970. Now preserved as a Mining Museum, Astley retains its pithead tower, winding gear and Engine House - the latter containing a 3,300 hp steam engine that powered the cage lifts. It also possesses a fleet of locomotives used to convey the coal over colliery lines to “Chutes” at Boothstown and Worsley that decanted their cargoes into barges. Rising almost 30 metres above the trees of today, the tower is easily seen from the village and nearby Bridgewater Canal. The Museum is well worth a visit and forms a fitting memorial to those who worked in this famous, and infamous, industry. Beneath it, under Chat Moss, still remains much coal, perhaps awaiting the day when processes can be found to make coal a clean and acceptable fuel. Written by: John Kirwin
