Mission Christmas 2015 The statistics are still standing. 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. This means there are children going to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. As Christmas approaches, 150,000 children in our city will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, Manchester took the appeal by storm as 2,000 businesses and 300 schools across the city signed up to support our campaign. We smashed our target to raise £1.6m worth
of toys and delivered presents to over 68,683 children across Manchester. The support and generosity of the people of Manchester was overwhelming, and we are asking for your help again this year as we are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many of them as possible in Greater Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city BUT Mission Christmas WILL make a difference to so many families on Christmas Day. Appeal Launch: Mon 16th November Last Donation Date: Tues 22nd December

THE RESULTS OF LIPOSUCTION WITHOUT THE SURGERY A new, safe form of laser liposuction that can change your body almost instantly. It’s non-invasive and painless: no needles, injections or downtime.
WHAT IS LASER LIPOLYSIS? Laser lipolysis is the process whereby fat stored in cells is broken down. Using low level laser technology we can disrupt the cell membrane of subcutaneous fat cells and achieve lipolysis (fat loss). HOW DOES IT WORK? The first laser penetrates the membrane of the fat cells and develop tiny pores from which the fat flows out. The second laser shrinks the fat cell. The fat is removed by the lymphatic system. DO I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING AT HOME? We recommend a healthy diet and exercise - you must exercise within 24 hours of the treatment to increase the heart rate, which in turn increases the blood flow and the lymphatic drainage. This process helps the body to remove the fat as waste. BENEFITS: ■ Inch Loss ■ Skin Tightening ■ Cellulite Reduction ■ Skin Rejuvenation ■ Stretch Marks Reduction WORKS ON: ■ Stomach ■ Hips (Love handles) ■ Thighs ■ Upper Back ■ Lower Back ■ Arms (under biceps) ■ Baby bulge ■ Double Chins ■ Above Knee Area ■ Ankles ■ Male Breasts RESULTS: Here at Worsley Laser Clinic we have seen some great results especially when used alongside a healthy diet and exercise plan. Recently, a client lost 33cm from her abdominal area after just one treatment, then went on to lose a further 17cm on her second treatment. We have also been seeing great results post pregnancy as the collagen and ellastin is stimulated to help tighten the skin for a more smoother more toned appearance. Liposcuplt is also great for body builders (male and female) as it targets specific areas of concern that might normally be stubborn areas to lose fat from.

Roe Green Playground:
FUNDING FOR REFURBISHMENT NEEDED On 24th October, Friends of Roe Green held a meeting at Roe Green Church to discuss the future of Roe Green playground. The meeting was attended by approximately 40 members of the general public, committee members of Friends of Roe Green and Annie Surtees, Principal Greenspace Officer for Salford Council. Roe Green playground is in urgent need of re-furbishment. Parts of it are becoming dangerous and the number of trees in the playground adds to the problem. Annie Surtees explained that there was a sum of £25,000 available from the council. Other

possible sources of funding were outlined. However, as the expected cost would be about £100,000 there was obviously a need for further funding if the playground was to be completely re-furbished with new and safer equipment. There was unanimous agreement that this was needed and the target of £100,000 set. A sub-committee of young, interested parents has been formed to investigate other sources and potential methods of funding. If anyone would like to contribute to this community project, or get involved, please get in touch via sarahvlwalton@hotmail.com, or Pauline Ogden, Treasurer for Friends of Roe Green on 0161 790 3386.

Fab Food and Friday Fun A night out, whether it’s with a partner, friend or group, is all about enjoying me away from the usual humdrum rhythm of life… a Friday night at La Turka Bistro in Monton certainly adds a little Eastern energy to the occasion! Photography: Tracy Gibbs I love Turkish food and it amazes me that there isn’t more of it about. Lots of delicious Mezze dishes filling a table with an endless array of taste sensations is my idea of heaven, so an invite to experience the Turkish delights on offer at La Turka Bistro was accepted with considerable eagerness. We arrived at 8pm on a Friday evening to find a busy, brightly lit room filled with people enjoying their dinner amid an atmospheric hubbub of cha er and live music. Menus were presented and drink orders taken by a happy and friendly waitress, who, like the rest of the team around her, seemed to really enjoy her job. The general positive a tude and enjoyment of the staff there, from the Maitre d’ to the bar staff definitely contributes to the very relaxed and happy atmosphere. The constant bustle of staff carrying plates, bringing drinks and checking on their customers adds a lot of life sadly missing in other restaurants. We chose the Lux Mezze pla er to start; after suffering severe decision stress over the extensive offering on the menu, it seemed the best way! A collection of hot and cold taster dishes of hummus, spinach with yoghurt (much yummier than it sounds!), Circassian Chichen (delicious), stuffed vine leaves, Turkish sausage, Halloumi cheese (best I’ve ever tasted!), 28 ON OUR DOORSTEP
feta cheese triangles (more please!) and aubergine salad was brought rapidly to our table, where it was demolished in very short order. It was all so fresh and delicious I could have happily sacked the main course and repeated the whole experience! We were quite pleased we didn’t though, as the main courses were delicious too. I chose O oman Chicken, slow cooked in a delicious mustard sauce. It was very good; chunks of chicken surrounded by rice, seasonal vegetables and the pre y contrast of carrots and mange tout. Mike opted for the Mixed Grill dish from the char grill menu. A combination of lamb fillet, lamb cutlet, La Turka meatballs, chicken fillet and their own ‘doner’ lamb served with hot tomato sauce. This was seriously good and Mike ate far more than he should have! Beyond hope of a pudding, we opted for coffee and peppermint tea... which arrived just as the belly dancing started! The diners there clearly knew what was coming, and had se led in for the evening… live music from the resident singer and a turn from a smiling and energetic belly dancer, who, after demonstrating the finer points of the art, encouraged willing participants to give it a go too. Was all great fun and added to the already jolly atmosphere. La Turka Bistro offers great food, a happy atmosphere and enter tainment should you want it… give it a try and escape from the greyness of an English autumn into the sunshine of Turkey.

New Years Resolutions:
Setting the Right Goals
“New Year New Me!” We have all said it at some point. It comes to the 1st January and we set ourselves huge, impossible tasks that we are bound to fail, end up hating and then revolt against them before it even gets to February. The issue is they are just that...impossible tasks. “I will have a 6-pack in 4 weeks.” “I will get my 1 mile run from 11 minutes down to 6 minutes in 3 weeks.” “I won’t eat a chocolate bar all year.”
Working in the fitness industry, I hear resolutions like this on a daily basis. Although most of the time they are all great and attainable goals, people tend to look at the big
picture and not the little steps that it takes to get there. The result is they tend to get discouraged when they don’t reach their goals and give up on them, usually going in the complete opposite direction when actually they are much closer than they think. The important thing to remember when setting goals (especially fitness related ones), is to include the smaller steps that will help you to achieve the main one. This will help you see how far you have come and keep you motivated. For help on setting your New Year’s resolutions, contact David at david.mollard@hotmail.com David Mollard Personal Trainer Marriott Worsley Park 0161 975 2041

RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it...
1
A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.
2
The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.
a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps.
6
Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.
7
The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!
3
The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.
4
Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Local History
A True Hero of Salford: MARK ADDY (1838 - 1890) The word "hero" is in the modern day, a much used and abused title. It is accorded to many who have merely been present at a notable event, but have had little participation. Surely the highest act of heroism is that which involves the risking of one's own life to save that of another. By that criteria, acts of individual bravery, a local name stands out above all others: MARK ADDY
THE LIFESAVER Mark Addy was born on the Manchester shore of the River Irwell, close to Blackfriars bridge. He was the son of a boatman who ran a hire business and also built small craft. At the age of 13 Mark, though unable to swim, rescued one of his friends who had fallen into the then fast-flowing river, by wading in up to his chin! He saved the same lad on a second occasion by floating out on a plank. Mark resolved to learn to swim, which he perfected at Greengate Baths in Salford and also became an expert oarsman and sculler. Following successes at local regattas on the Irwell he beat London's best in challenges on the Thames - beating David Coombes and Ted May respectively, for prizes of £200 and £100 (about £20,000 on modern terms) over the same stretch of the Thames.
The Grade II listed Greengate Baths, where Mark Addy learned to swim, has been listed in the top ten of the most at risk Victorian buildings in the country.
40 ON OUR DOORSTEP
After marrying Mark moved to Ordsall in Salford and became landlord of the ‘Old Boathouse Inn’ off Ordsall Lane. Due to the Inn's close proximity to the River, Mark was frequently called upon to rescue unfortunates who found themselves in trouble in its waters. Between 1858 and 1878, Mark saved an astonishing 34 lives in the River! The Irwell was no longer the sweet water of his youth, by then it had earned the title of ‘Sludge Canal’ for the industrial waste and sewage that it carried. Nothing deterred him, he was a rare man indeed. In a time when few people could swim, he was supreme. Typical of his prodigious efforts was when returning home from a funeral in his best clothes and gold watch, he plunged into the River to rescue a child. On another occasion, in his nightshirt, he rowed out to save a 17 stone woman. Unable to get her into the boat he held her with one hand and sculled to shore with the other. RECOGNITION In 1878, before a large crowd at Salford Town Hall in Bexley Square, Mark was presented with a Loyal Address of Appreciation by the Mayor of Salford and awarded with a purse of 200 Guineas for his heroic deeds by the people of Salford. At the same ceremony he was awarded the Gold medal of the Humane Society and the Nemesis Rowing Club added a gold clasp as a token of their appreciation.
OOD DecJan16_Issue 38 20/11/2015 17:04 Page 41
He was also awarded the Silver Medal of the Humane Society for the Hundred of Salford and the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society. THE ULTIMATE ACCOLADE In November 1878 Mark Addy received a letter from the then Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. It informed him that Queen Victoria had become aware of his ‘repeated acts of heroism’ in saving the lives of many of her subjects from drowning. The letter went on to state that in recognition of Mark's gallantry, the Queen had conferred on him the Albert Medal of the 1st Class. This medal (now called the George Medal), is the highest civilian Honour, the equivalent of the Victoria Cross. Mark Addy was presented with the Medal, on behalf of the Queen, by the Mayor of Salford at the Town Hall in 1879. ................AND YET MORE LIVES WERE SAVED! But Mark was not yet done with the River Irwell. He was to save at least 15 more lives from its filthy waters. His final effort was to save a child from the River in 1889. Jumping into a particularly sewage-laden stretch he succeeded in the rescue, but contracted tuberculosis from the content of the water. He died at the age of only 52 on 9th June 1890. Before he died Mark reflected that his last rescue was “the best work I ever did” for
“to see the joy of his brother and sister when I brought him out, to feel their grip around my legs, and to hear them thank me a hundred times, was more to me than all else besides; it was better than the big meeting, and the purse of gold given at the Town Hall”. HIS MEMORIAL Mark was buried in Weaste Cemetery and, soon after it was decided that a suitable memorial should be erected to him. Paid for by public subscription, the impressive red granite obelisk stands over his grave to the present day. It relates events from his life and features a bronze plaque with a portrait of the great man. It is a Grade II Listed monument. His medals were donated to the Peel Park Gallery, now in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery. He is also remembered in the ‘Mark Addy’ public house which stands almost opposite where he was born. A true hero! Written by John Kirwin

CHRISTMAS FOOD APPEAL Salford Central Foodbank is asking local people to help bring festive cheer to families struggling to eat this Christmas by donating festive food items to the foodbank. For some families, the Christmas hampers given out alongside standard food parcels will be their only treat this Christmas. Local people facing bleak times this Christmas will be given food hampers containing mince pies, puddings, tinned ham, chocolates and other festive treats alongside a standard emergency food parcel. People in crisis will be identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers and given a voucher which they can bring to one of Salford Central Foodbank centres to exchange for their food.
Salford Central Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: “Christmas is a very tough time to be hungry - it’s cold and it is heartbreaking to know you cannot give your children a Christmas treat when everyone else is celebrating. Hidden behind closed doors there are many Salford families with little to look forward to this Christmas, the good news is we can all help. We hope that the people of Salford will join our Christmas hamper campaign to give local people with little to look forward to a happier Christmas.” Donations can be left at the permanent collection points at Sainsbury’s, Regent Road or Tesco, Salford Precinct at any time. Alternatively, donations can be taken to Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call ahead to confirm Tel: 0161 637 4500
