SUPPORT STRUGGLING FAMILIES AT CHRISTMAS Christmas should be about more than survival. Yet for one in three local children whose families struggle to make ends meet, it is just that. We want to ensure all Salford children have toys and treats to enjoy on Christmas Day by helping struggling families with the expense of the season.
In 2015 we gave toys and food to the families of over 1,000 Salford children and this year we expect the numbers needing help to grow.

MISSION CHRISTMAS 2016 Sadly, the statistics are still standing 1 in 3 children are living in poverty in Greater Manchester. This means there are children going to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. As Christmas approaches, 150,000 children in our city may not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, the support and generosity of people in Manchester was overwhelming and enabled us
to distribute ÂŁ1,960,170 worth of toys and helped almost 52,000 children. We are asking for your help again this year as we are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many of them as possible in Greater Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city BUT Mission Christmas WILL make a difference to so many families on Christmas Day. On Our Doorstep have organised local collection points at Beesley Green and Boothstown Community Centres. For more details visit www.key103.co.uk/mission/

Enjoy Your Pregnancy with some Gentle Exercise and Relaxation It’s a myth that when you’re pregnant you can’t take some time to exercise and stay healthy. And with swimming named one of the safest ways to exercise for mummies-to-be, aquanatal classes are probably one of the best courses to sign up for. “Puddle Ducks aquanatal sessions are the perfect balance of relaxation, laughter and exercise a wonderful way to unwind and stay healthy in pregnancy,” says Puddle Ducks franchise owner Jo Gribben. “Our expertly designed aquanatal programme takes a holistic approach to mums’ physical and mental well-being, combining relaxation with cardiovascular exercises to help prepare the body for birth.” And that’s not all, swimming in pregnancy has been found to improve muscle tone, circulation and strength, whilst also easing pregnancy niggles such as back pain and swelling in the hands and feet. Classes take place in soothing, warm pools and combine exercise with relaxation activities so it’s not all hard work. “The lessons are designed this way to help your body to release natural happy hormones, endorphins, which suppress pain and help you to feel calm,” explains Jo. “This is not only helpful during 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP
pregnancy but learning relaxation techniques is a great skill to have during and after labour.” When baby arrives, mummy friends are very important. Going to a class while you’re pregnant means that you could make good friends that are a great support when you’re a new mummy. You’re also in safe hands with Puddle Ducks aquanatal as all of their teachers have been through rigorous training. A Puddle Ducks teacher has to pass antenatal swimming training which is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives Trust, STA Aquacise training and their own extensive Aquanatal training. Suitable from 14 weeks gestation, aquanatal classes combine gentle cardio vascular exercises, relaxation and fun. There are plenty of sessions to choose from that are flexible around working hours so you can fit them in before maternity leave starts. Sessions last 45 minutes, are priced at £4.95 and are booked in blocks of six. Classes run at the following times:
Mondays 7.15pm: DW Fitness Bolton Wednesdays 6.45pm: Radcliffe Leisure Centre Thursdays 7.15pm: Worsley Leisure Centre To book your place, call 01257 262622 or e-mail eastlancs@puddleducks.com “Our aqua Mums will also receive 20% off their booking in our Floaties classes too so you can continue your Puddle Ducks journey after the baby arrives,” added Jo.

Almost our 12 month Anniversary...
Home Instead Senior Care in Salford will be 12 months old on the 1st February 2016. The year has flown by! We have met some amazing people during the year, most importantly our Clients and CAREGivers. We have made strong bonds with health and social care professionals, occupational therapists, social workers, doctors, the voluntary sector, community workers and our neighbours - to name just a few. Susan Robinson, Co-founder of Home Instead Senior Care in Salford said, ‘’We are absolutely overwhelmed with the interest that the people of Salford have shown in Home Instead. We know that all our clients are happy with our services and in fact, most clients have stated that we have
‘exceeded’ their expectations. We have a group of amazing CAREGivers - but of course we are always on the look-out for people, both men and women, who would like to join our team. They do have to pass the ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ test... this means they are people that we would like to have looking after our own parents!’’ Plans are afoot to celebrate the 1st Year milestone at Home Instead Senior Care Salford but before that... Christmas will be here and so we would like to wish everyone a ‘Very Merry Christmas’ and a ‘Happy New Year!’ We thank everyone for their help and support throughout the year and we hope that 2017 will be filled with good cheer.

“There’s an Elephant buried in Worsley Woods you know...” Such was the story that was told to me when I was a child, by an old gentleman, and I believed him because I had heard it from others. Little more detail was available, it was always “I was told so by my father/grandfather” etc. - it was evidently a very old story. We call such memories “Folk Tales”, but often there is more than a grain of truth behind it all... For years this tale had nagged at me and it recently surfaced again when I met, by chance, a former employee of what had been the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens in Manchester. I told him of my buried elephant and he shared his knowledge, a strange story indeed, of Maharajah the Asian Elephant and his Keeper, Lorenzo Lawrence the Lion Tamer. It seemed that both had been a part of Belle Vue’s history and were immortalised in a book, written in 1988 by David Barnaby, entitled “The Elephant Who Walked to Manchester”. My informant added another treat - the skeleton of Maharajah still existed, in the safe care of Manchester Museum, at the University on Oxford Road. Could it be that my “buried elephant” and Maharajah were one and the same pachyderm? It is therefore to Mr David Barnaby that I owe the history that I now relate in brief. His excellent book, I can highly recommend for a much more detailed and entertaining source.
THE TRAVELLING MENAGERIES Back in the early 19th century it became fashionable to have an interest in exotic wild animals, many of which were being imported from the Empire, and many “menageries” (travelling zoos), were in the business of exhibiting their collections across the Land. One of the earliest (and destined to become the most famous) was “Wombwells Royal Number One” which began touring in 1805. Founded by George Wombwell it acquired its “Royal” 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
appellation by being exhibited to Royalty on a number of occasions. George died in 1850 and his wife ran the business for a further 15 years before her nephew, Alexander Fairgreave, took over. In 1872 he, in turn, retired and decided to auction the entire menagerie - all of its many and varied animals, wagons and equipment.
A NATIONAL EVENT Mr Fairgreave had so arranged the final Tour that it terminated in Edinburgh in April and the Auction was to be held at that city’s Waverley Market, close to Waverley Rail Station. So great was the fame of the business and so well cared for were the animals that interested buyers travelled to attend the Auction from all over the country and from abroad. Prominent among the buyers was Mr. James Jennison the owner of Belle Vue Zoological Gardens in Manchester, eager to add to his collection. By the end of the Auction he had purchased a number of animals, including a lioness, an antelope and the most valuable animal in the entire Auction - Maharajah the 7 year old Asian Elephant which cost him £680 alone - a very large sum indeed and equivalent to many thousands at today’s values.
PROBLEMS WITH TRANSPORT Mr Jennison’s purchases were to travel to Manchester by rail two days later, from Waverly Station and, when the day arrived Maharajah was loaded into a boxed wagon by his keeper, Lorenzo Lawrence. He, now a former employee of Wombwells, had been retained temporarily by Jennison only to control the elephant for the journey (and then, presumably, be redundant). Suddenly the normally gentle and obedient pachyderm began to behave totally out of character. Maharajah had travelled in wagons many times without any difficulty, often over FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

great distances. Not this time for, without warning, he embarked on a spectacular demolition of his wagon. A frontal heave resulted in the roof disappearing and the elephant’s head appearing. A move to the rear resulted in a view of the elephant’s rear. No doubt some panic ensued until Lorenzo intervened and immediately restored order and a happy and calm animal to the rail platform. Mr Barnaby, in his book, has some suspicion that Lorenzo had instigated the elephant’s behaviour by secret signals to ensure his retention in a future job. However, the rail company had no enthusiasm for future pachyderm transportation, a problem again solved by Lorenzo who announced that he would “jolly well walk Maharajah to Manchester”.
AN EPIC JOURNEY Lorenzo’s offer was accepted (it gained him 40 years of employment at Belle Vue) and the pair set off the same day. They had 200 miles to cover - no problem for an elephant, somewhat more arduous for a man - at a rate of 20 miles a day. They passed through towns and villages, staying at the stables of inns overnight. Their route took them from Edinburgh to Hawick, then over the Cheviots to Langholm and Carlisle before Penrith was reached. Then over Shap Fell (reminiscent of Hannibal and his elephants over the Alps?) down to Kendal. The following day the pair made it to Lancaster, the next to Preston, from where they left what we know as the A6, and deviated to Bolton where they spent the night of day 8. The aim was to arrive at Belle Vue at 2pm on Saturday, April 20th, exactly 10 days after starting and Mr Jennison publicised their time of arrival in “The Manchester Guardian” to ensure a big welcoming crowd. The route from Bolton was almost certainly via Farnworth,
Walkden, Swinton, Pendlebury and Salford, following the A6 .
LIFE AT BELLE VUE Maharajah had a comfortable life at Belle Vue. In company with “Sally”, a female of his own species, he was cared for by Lorenzo and gave rides to children around the Gardens. Sadly, in 1882, 10 years after the great walk, he contracted pneumonia and died. But, so famous was he that it was decided to preserve his skeleton in the museum at the Gardens. No records exist of how his bones were achieved, but I like to think that the story about an elephant being buried in Worsley Woods played a part and that after nature had taken its course he was exhumed and his bones re-assembled.
POSTSCRIPT There is another thread to Maharajah’s story that concerns he and Lorenzo encountering a Tollgate, during their journey, where payment was demanded before they could pass. However, it is said that no tariff existed for elephants and therefore they could not be allowed to continue. The impasse was resolved by Maharajah lifting the gate off its hinges and walking on. There is no proof that such an incident occurred, but it inspired two paintings, one of which was displayed with his skeleton.

RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it...
1
A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.
2
The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.
a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps.
6
Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.
7
The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!
3
The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.
4
Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.
5
Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP

CHRISTMAS FOOD APPEAL Salford Central Foodbank is hoping to make the festive period better for those at Christmas who may be struggling to put food on the table. Whilst they will continue to issue standard food parcels to individuals and families who are in crisis, they would like to give an additional bag of Christmas treats and are inviting local people to get involved by donating these items which will include mince pies, Christmas puddings, chocolates, crisps and tinned ham. Last year the foodbank gave out 3,285 three day emergency food parcels of which 1,395 were for children. People attending either of the two foodbank centres in Salford are identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers, and given a voucher to exchange for their food. 42 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Salford Central Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: “Christmas is always a busy period where we help more people than any other time of the year. For many over this period, there isn’t much to look forward to. Not being able to buy presents for friends and family is tough enough, let alone being hungry. We want to do our bit to help families and individuals enjoy Christmas a bit more than they might do otherwise. We rely on generous, local people for our food and would love many to help make a difference to others in their community.” Donations can be left at the permanent collection points at Sainsbury’s, Regent Road or Tesco, Salford Precinct at any time they are open. Alternatively, donations can be taken to Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call 0161 637 4500 to confirm when you will be donating.
