MISSION CHRISTMAS 2017 Sadly, the statistics are still standing that 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. This means there are children going to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. As Christmas approaches, 192,336 children in our city will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, the support and generosity of Manchester people was overwhelming and helped us distribute £2,897,259 (£1.96m in 2015) worth of toys and helped almost 61,873 children.

We are asking for your help again this year as we are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many of them as possible in Greater Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city, but it WILL make a difference to so many families on Christmas Day. www.key103.co.uk/mission

Introducing...
Drop a Dress Size for Christmas, Trim Down in the New Year! at
THE RESULTS OF LIPOSUCTION WITHOUT THE SURGERY A new, safe form of laser liposuction that can change your body almost instantly. It’s non-invasive and painless: no needles, injections or downtime.
WHAT IS LASER LIPOLYSIS? Laser lipolysis is the process whereby fat stored in cells is broken down. Using low level laser technology we can disrupt the cell membrane of subcutaneous fat cells and achieve lipolysis (fat loss). HOW DOES IT WORK? The first laser penetrates the membrane of the fat cells and develop tiny pores from which the fat flows out. The second laser shrinks the fat cell. The fat is removed by the lymphatic system. DO I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING AT HOME? We recommend a healthy diet and exercise - you must exercise within 24 hours of the treatment to increase the heart rate, which in turn increases the blood flow and the lymphatic drainage. This process helps the body to remove the fat as waste. BENEFITS: ■ Inch Loss ■ Skin Tightening ■ Cellulite Reduction ■ Skin Rejuvenation ■ Stretch Marks Reduction WORKS ON: ■ Stomach ■ Hips (Love handles) ■ Thighs ■ Upper Back ■ Lower Back ■ Arms (under biceps) ■ Baby bulge ■ Double Chins ■ Above Knee Area ■ Ankles ■ Male Breasts RESULTS: Here at Worsley Laser Clinic we have seen some great results especially when used alongside a healthy diet and exercise plan. Recently, a client lost 33cm from her abdominal area after just one treatment, then went on to lose a further 17cm on her second treatment. We have also been seeing great results post pregnancy as the collagen and ellastin is stimulated to help tighten the skin for a more smoother more toned appearance. Liposcuplt is also great for body builders (male and female) as it targets specific areas of concern that might normally be stubborn areas to lose fat from.

Community News
Worsley Village Community Association
Celebrating 21 years in 2018! Worsley Village Community Association is a volunteer group aiming to secure the friendliness of our members and to bring the community together. We work with young and old alike, from all backgrounds and genders. Our group formed in 1997 making 2018 our 21st Anniversary and with the involvement of other groups we are planning a special year of events!
What’s in store for 2018... In January we aim to launch a new “FREE Lunch” project for the elderly and disabled, every third Wednesday of the month. We’ve been fortunate to receive a grant and hope it’ll be very successful. This February, we have the inquiry to decide on the proposal by Peel to build c.600 houses on the land either side of Worsley Road. The objection is being lead by RAID (Residents against Inappropriate Developments); your attendance at the hearing is very important - dates to be announced.
18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Winter & Spring Events... JANUARY: There will be a local photographic competition to be judged by Danny Morrell. MARCH: The Worsley Walking Group will be arranging a morning walk followed by lunch in Worsley Library, served by WVCA and ladies from Moorside Residents Group. Plus an Easter party will be held in the Library for the mothers and baby group. MAY: A talk by Danny Morrel on famous artists and their techniques. JUNE: Spanish Guitarist in concert hosted by Worsley Townswomens Guild. This is a very special year for Worsley Village Community Association - we are looking forward to being able to celebrate it with all the community groups and their members." www.worsleyvillage.org.uk

Friends of Roe Green:
Looking ahead to 2018 Closing another great year of events, join us for our final celebration of 2017 - A Christmas Afternoon in Roe Green Church, Wednesday 6th December 2pm - featuring Eccles Community Choir, followed by mince pies in the Church Hall. We will soon be announcing our programme of talks for 2018, the first of which will be ‘The Story of Gerrards of Swinton’, a family building firm founded in 1864, Weds 17th January 2pm. We started Friends of Roe Green (FORG) over 11 years ago and have always had great support from local businesses and sports clubs and, not least, the church on the Green. Our aim is simply to maintain what we already have - a pretty village appreciated by residents and visitors alike, and to promote Roe Green’s really fascinating history which you can read about on the monument outside the play park.

Like everywhere else, speeding traffic is a problem and a real danger, and also inconsiderate parking. The 20MPH speed limit soon coming into force should help with the former and the local community police officers are supporting with leaflets to discourage the latter, particluarly when it puts pedestrians at risk. With our close links with Roe Green Church, we are delighted to have met and already begun discussions with Emma, the church’s new Youth Leader, who has some exciting ideas about improving community spirit further between the generations. So watch out for new developments! Find out more at www.friendsofroegreen.org and read the noticeboards around Roe Green. To join FORG (min fee £5.00 p.a. per household), contact our membership secretary on 0161 790 3166.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Keep Your Energy Levels Up This Winter! It’s not uncommon to lose motivation during the winter months. Putting 100% into training when the evenings are getting darker and the days are getting wetter is hard. It’s natural and you’re feeling just like 90% of other people but it’s because of these reasons that it is even more important to make sure that both your nutrition and supplements are correct, not only to improve your physique aesthetically, but also for your health & fitness. A low carbohydrate, high protein and high fat diet will ensure that your body fat isn’t increased but you will still have high energy levels throughout the day. Your meals eaten little and often will ensure that blood sugar levels stay stable throughout the day preventing a spike in insulin which causes fat storage.
Supplements are there to do just that, supplement a balanced diet, and the ones I would recommend especially throughout the ‘cold season’ are: Vitamin C High EPA Omega 3’s Multivitamins ZMA’s Although not essential, these supplements will help to keep your immune system performing at a high standard which reduces your risk of catching illnesses. They will also keep you feeling energetic and happy which will prevent you from ‘cheating’ on your diet! If you are interested in learning more, or joining Marriott Leisure, contact the Leisure Team. PILATES: Health Benefits 10 Reasons why you should try it Described as an art of controlled movements, pilates offers a number of both physical and mental benefits when practiced regularly as an exercise routine. 1. Focuses on Core Strength. Promoting strength and balanced muscle development as well as flexibility and increased range of motion for the joints.
6. Improves Posture. Good posture is a reflection of good alignment supported by a strong core. It is a position from which one can move freely.
2. Adaptable to many Fitness Levels and Needs. The foundations of Pilates movement apply to all. Building from core strength, focusing on proper alignment, and a body/mind integrative approach.
7. Increases Energy. It gets the breath and circulation moving, stimulates the spine and muscles giving you a feel-good factor.
3. Creates Strength without Bulk. It doesn’t build muscles, but develops toned muscles that work perfectly within the context of the body as a whole. 4. Increases Flexibility. Working towards a safe increase in length and stretch of the muscles and range of motion within the joints. 5. Focuses on Core Strength. The core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor.
8. Promotes Weight Loss & Leaner Appearance. Pilates improves muscle tone, balances musculature, creating long, strong muscles and a leaner look. 9. Increases Body Awareness. Pilates is about ‘the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit’. Each movement practiced with ‘total attention’. 10. Professionally run local classes. Worsley Physio Clinic offer a range of Pilates Classes and One to One sessions. Classes, supervised by a Chartered Physiotherapist, will offer attention tailored to your needs.

SALFORD HOME CARE PROVIDER RATED “OUTSTANDING” Home Instead Senior Care was inspected by the independent care sector regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), in September. The recently published results rate the service, owned and managed by Salford locals Susan Robinson and Jo Shaughnessy, as outstanding. Only two per cent of home care providers inspected by the CQC have been awarded the coveted ‘outstanding’ rating, making this a truly impressive achievement. Commenting on the rating, Jo said, “We are thrilled that in under two years, our service has been deemed to be outstanding by the industry’s regulator. We are incredibly proud of our amazing team and pleased to see their dedication recognised.” In the report, one CAREGiver said, “The matching process is always used - a good amount of time is spent learning about people’s backgrounds and
there is always an introductory meeting with the people we will be caring for.” Another CAREGiver said, “It is so good working for Home Instead. Team working is very good and the culture is almost family like.” In summing up the caring nature of the business, inspectors wrote, ‘The feedback we received from people who used the service was unanimously positive both about the care they received and the CAREGivers. People consistently told us CAREGivers provided an excellent level of care which was dedicated, compassionate and centred around what they wanted.’ Susan commented ‘we are always looking for CAREGivers who care from the heart. We have Clients waiting to be matched.’

“Pigs Might Fly” The amazing aqueducts of Barton –Part 1 When, in 1759, the Duke of Bridgewater commissioned his engineer, James Brindley, to build the canal that would bear the Duke’s titular name, he specified that its route be from his coal mines at Worsley to a market for the fuel in Salford. It was to be a “contour” canal that followed the same land elevation throughout its course and therefore required no locks. To achieve this it would proceed from Worsley to Barton and then follow close to the north bank course of the River Irwell up to Salford. Work was started, but then abruptly stopped by a change of mind which has never been explained. It was decided instead to cross the Irwell at Barton and continue along the south bank - to Manchester. A possible answer to this change is that there is a slope on the sandstone bedrock on the north bank which would have required a deep cutting, no doubt at great cost. The change of route meant that Brindley had to come up with a bridge over the Irwell – not any old bridge, but one that had to carry water and boats – an aqueduct. The change of plan and route required a Bill to be presented in Parliament for approval, but also it demanded that Brindley show his design for approval to demonstrate that it 28 ON OUR DOORSTEP
would not obstruct existing navigation on the River. Now Brindley, although a talented practical engineer, had no formal schooling, and therefore no written designs, but he was nothing if not resourceful. To demonstrate the arches of the aqueduct he used a large round of Cheshire cheese, cut in half and inverted and with a plank on top to represent the canal waterway. To illustrate how it would retain water he produced a lump of clay and worked it into “puddle” to show its retentive property. The plans were approved.
CONSTRUCTION Aqueducts were nothing new; the Romans had built them to provide drinking water to cities over 1700 years before. But a navigable aqueduct was something completely new to Britain and Brindley’s at Barton has since been hailed as one of the “seven wonders of the canal age”. Completed in 1761 it was a massive project by any measure. It was 200 yards long by 12 yards wide and it had three arches, the central one having a span of 63 feet. The canal which it supported was at a height of 39 feet above the Irwell. It was so ambitious that it was celebrated as a major wonder of the day and many said it would never survive.

Local History
James Brindley (1716-72), Canal Engineer
Barton Old Aqueduct and Bridge, Albert Harris 1894, Manchester Art Gallery
So sceptical were many that it is said it gave birth to the popular saying: “...and pigs might fly”. The full expression of the saying is “And pigs might fly, when waters meet in Market Street. But those who doubted were proven very wrong. The canal marched on to Castlefield, in Manchester and terminated close to Market Street. Little did the public know however, how close to calamity the project came. On the day that water was first allowed to enter the aqueduct and fill the channel, one of the arches began to buckle under the weight. Brindley, it is said, succumbed to stress and locked himself away in a room at a Stretford hotel. However, John Gilbert, the Duke’s Agent, was equal to the crisis. He managed to heal the breach and had newly-puddled clay and mortar installed and given time to settle. It was a question of less weight on the haunches of the piers and redistribution to the crown. The basic design was sound and was to last for nearly 140 years.
took off. The Duke’s wealth greatly multiplied and his fame as the “Canal Duke” was assured. The Canal and its aqueduct became rightly famous and the latter was a “must” on the tourist circuit where the novelty of seeing boats travelling in the air on the canal, over other boats sailing the river, was celebrated by writers of the day. Sadly however this great construction was not to last until the present day. It was to be superceded by something even more marvellous... but that is another story. But a memory lingers still. Should you walk to Barton road bridge today from the Eccles side - look to the left. Across a small and pretty “Pocket Park” you can see the original earth and masonry ramp which still carries the Bridgewater Canal, that Brindley built. Well worth inspection.
Written by John Kirwin
INFLUENCE OF THE CANAL The canal and its aqueduct were opened on 17th July 1761, just 15 months after the Act of Parliament was passed that permitted its construction. With all our present day legislation procedures and construction capabilities it is doubtful that the same could be achieved today in less than THREE TIMES AS MUCH ! It was an immediate success. The price of coal plummeted because of the huge cut in transportation cost, industry boomed in the region as a result and the Industrial Revolution PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION ON OUR DOORSTEP WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

BIN AND GONE In October 2014 Bury became the first council in England to empty rubbish bins only once every three weeks. A local entrepreneur, Josh Morris, believed that most homes still had a need for more regular bin collections. Following the reduced service in Salford, many people have struggled to keep on top of their rubbish, citing problems with overflowing bins, local fly-tipping, bad smells and increased numbers of flies and maggots. Josh says: “It’s a problem that a significant number of households face and our service provides people with the option to have their bin emptied before it’s overflowing. You can choose from either a oneoff collection, or an ongoing regular service, depending on what you need”. We all have those times when we need a little extra waste clearing; after parties and BBQ’s, when we are

moving home or spring cleaning; when we forget to put the bin out and of course at Christmas time. So, when life is too busy and your bin is too full… Busy Bins are there to help. So how does it work? Arrange your one-off bin collection or regular service online at www.busybins.co.uk or call us on 0161 766 3330. Busy Bins will empty your bin on the weeks that the council don’t. No extra bin is required and your bin day will stay the same. The friendly and professional team will then empty your bin into one of their clean refuse wagons and place the bin back tidily for you. Busy Bins can provide their bin collection service to residents in Worsley, Roe Green, Boothstown, Walkden, Ellenbrook, Monton and the whole borough of Salford.
