If you are buying a property through an estate agent and do not already have a solicitor in mind, the agent may recommend one or several for you to use. I personally lived in Monton for 14 years and am very grateful to have had the opportunity to showcase our design skills within the Tom Yam Thai Restaurant on the very much loved Monton Road.
Here are my, on trend, top tips on styling your home in 2024...
STYLING & PLANNING Form follows Function (or Lifestyle over Look) so measure everything within a space you are making over and keep the measurements with you, just in case you see something when you are out, especially as old is the new, new. Buying second hand where possible helps to save the environment and ever-increasing landfill, but also gives you something more personal and unique.
WINDOW DRESSING Natural light within any room is important so keep windows clear of curtains (put them against the walls instead of in front of your window. If you have a view, awesome, but if not use voils to add privacy yet they still allow the light in. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall curtains and over-size rugs, with the edges placed under furniture will give you a high-end look.
LIGHTING With home technology making a big appearance in 2024, lighting is a good way to start. Products like smart lightbulbs ensure you can beautifully light every corner of your home without ugly wires on display. Change main lights to daylight bulbs as these are most useful during the day when needing task lighting and use warm lighting in lamps and accent lights for a soft, cosy environment in the evening. Mirrors can reflect extra light into your space and make interiors look more expensive. Oversize them where possible and if you find a beautiful frame you love, get a mirror cut to size for a unique solution.
FINISHING TOUCHES
COLOURS 2024 colour trends are either soft textured neutrals or bold colours (think 1970’s with a modern twist!). Create a ‘Colour Code’ for your home - if you are not confident with colour stick to three colours - a main colour, a background colour and an accent colour. Use similar colours throughout the whole house to help open the space up and give it unity (this is a technique you often see within show homes).
ACCESSORISING When accessorising, declutter first – if it’s not useful or super beautiful, ditch it. If you are good at 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP
organising and arranging put it on display, if not, put it away! Use different height objects with textures and visually balance your display and stick to your ‘Colour Code’. Styling objects in odd numbers seems to visually work best.

Heating Tips For Winter No matter what fuel you use, costs are always increasing, and it can be hard to keep your house warm. Here are a few ideas to help you stay warm this winter, without breaking the bank.
Maintain Your Heating System: Ensure you schedule regular maintenance to keep your system operating at maximum efficiency. It may be worth upgrading to a more energy-efficient system if your current one isn’t working properly.
Double-Glazed Windows: These may be a financial outlay, but the long-term savings could be worthwhile. Modern windows will seal your home from cold drafts and keep heat inside.
Insulate Your Home: Make sure you have adequate insulation in the attic, walls, and floors. Adding insulation will improve your home’s heat retention.

Close Curtains and Blinds: At night, use thick curtains or blinds to trap the heat inside your home. Keeping them open in the day lets in sunlight and warmth.
Use Rugs and Carpets: Cover any bare floors with rugs or carpets to insulate your home and retain the heat.
Using Thermostats: Use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature according to your daily schedule. Use a lower setting when you’re out or at night when you sleep. Keeping the thermostat a few degrees lower will help lower costs. Use Your Cooker: Baking and using the oven and hob will provide warmth and serve a practical purpose.
Space Heaters: These small heaters can supplement warmth where needed. Always read the instruction and follow the safety guidelines.
Block Chimneys: Consider blocking any unused chimneys to prevent cold air from coming into your home and warm air from escaping.
Wear Warm Clothes: Use layers of warm clothing to keep your body toasty when you're indoors. If your body is warm enough, you could even lower the thermostat a little more!
Seal Drafts: Check doors, windows and other openings for drafts. Make sure you seal gaps and cracks or use draft excluders to prevent cold air from coming in.
Keeping your home warm during the winter months is essential for your own physical comfort, but it also reduces the chance of dampness and consequent mould which can be detrimental to your health. By implementing some of these tips, you can create a warmer home environment and help reduce heating costs this winter.
Bleed Radiators: If the radiators in your home aren’t heating up evenly, they may need bleeding. This is when you remove air pockets that stop the hot water circulating properly. It’s a fairly easy job, just make sure the radiators are off and cold, hold a cloth under the valve and insert the bleed key. You should hear a hissing noise as the air escapes. When water starts to drain, tighten the valve.

When the nights started drawing in, the Plotters harvested the last of the 2023 crops, the ones the slugs left for us, and began planning for 2024. After we had planted the New Year’s spring flowering bulbs and time allowed for thinking, we did a review of our 2023 activities and reflected on our successes and failures. A major project was the removal of the rotted deckboarding outside the Community Cabin and its replacement with anti-slip concrete - purely for safety reasons not aesthetics, and cost was king. The Community Cabin kitchen units were removed following flooding in 2022 from a burst water pipe, so we soon hope to have a new, modern facility. Our Community Garden had become an overgrown jungle since it became untended and neglected after vandalism had destroyed the Wildlife pond. A plan was devised to re-shape the area and lay turf, so that it could be easily mown, with a new planting layout and a grid of footpaths, all to be accessible by the plotholders and guests. The contractors were due to have the new turf in place before the first frosts and bedded in before winter. However, the turf supplier was unable to cut the strips, due to the rain soaked conditions, and we will need to wait until spring to see the finished landscape. Also this year, diseased and dead trees have been removed, our orchard will be pruned ... all work in progress! Our sweet peppers and chillies seemed to like the strange weather and the beetroot and grape-vine surprised us with better than usual crops, just like 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
the lettuce we planted in September. We also planted coriander, for use in curries along with other herbs. The shield beetles took an instant liking to all except the coriander so we’ll have to replant most of them. The biggest disappointment has been the poor honey harvest - not the bees or the beekeeper’s fault, since production everywhere has faltered and we can only hope for a better result next year. We also faced losing our long-standing beekeeper due to family issues and realised that the unit housing the bee equipment was leaking-in through the roof. Repairs were urgently put in place and further damage was avoided. However, in the longer term a major re-roof will probably be needed and we will miss the well established bee enterprise that served the site so well with plenty of honey. We have been plagued by fly-tippers dumping rubbish next to the Cancer Support plot and the committee decided to clear the area and incorporate it into the plot. It’s now clean, tidy and has new ‘planting collars’ along with mini planters, made by our volunteers, so that sitting out is a pleasure and the bulbs, seeds and herbs will attract pollinators instead of vermin as before. Get ready for winter! If you haven’t fleeced your tender plants yet, do it now - a cold New Year can really set things back. Late winter is also an ideal time to mulch entire beds or borders. This will trap in moisture from wet weather, benefitting all your plants and ensuring Spring will be as lovely as usual and beds don‘t dry out quickly in the summer heat. WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local History
Local Railway Tunnel Disaster and Swinton Greenway One of the plaques on Swinton Heritage Trail marks a sad occasion in our Local History when in April 1953 a section of the 1,298-yard-long Clifton Hall Tunnel which runs under Temple Drive, near Victoria Park in Swinton collapsed with the loss of life of five local residents. The line, which was originally opened in 1850, was little used by the 1950s, although it did still carry occasional freight trains. It ran between Patricroft and Clifton Hall Colliery and then on via Molyneaux Brow to Radcliffe. Swinton Hall Colliery had itself been the scene of another earlier local disaster in 1885 when 178 miners lost their lives. This is referred to on another of the Heritage Trail plaques, the one for St. Augustine’s Church, where many of the victims are buried and where there is a memorial commemorating that disaster. According to the official enquiry* (published later in the year of the disaster), on a routine inspection of Clifton Hall Tunnel a couple of weeks before it occurred, debris had been found lying in the track and brickwork was revealed to be peeling off the roof at one point. It was therefore closed to rail traffic pending further investigation and ensuing repairs. Before the tunnel could be sufficiently strengthened it collapsed at that point and numbers 22 and 24 Temple Drive fell into a large hole in the ground. Timbers in an old brick-lined construction shaft had rotted and given way, resulting in a collapse of materials which left a void under the houses.

The major stretch of the Greenway follows the route of the former Patricroft and Clifton Hall Colliery Railway Line between Monton Road and Hartspring Avenue, just across Manchester Road from Victoria Park, although there are some other branches off it. The tunnel route under Temple Drive continues across the corner of the Park, under Manchester Road and used to re-emerge at a point now adjoining the Greenway. All traces of it were removed and filled with waste from a local colliery and more recently further underground sections have been filled in with concrete. A sculpture has been erected marking the former tunnel entrance. There is an interpretive board near the sculpture that explains some of the history of the former railway, including the Clifton Hall Tunnel Disaster.
