“The Church on the Green” Ian Shaw, part of the leadership team at Roe Green Church, tells us more about our local church..... With Roe Green Church featured, last issue, in “A Stroll Around Roe Green”, it may be of interest to read more about its history, beliefs and what it does today. In 1806, Independent Methodism broke away from mainstream Methodism for several reasons. Firstly, many members were poor and couldn’t afford their contributions towards the Ministers’ pay. Secondly, many held Quaker views which do not believe in a separate clergy and lastly, many followers did not like the authority exercised by ministers and held their own separate services.
The Church today still has a no alcohol rule on its premises, but is far more concerned with spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, which is after all what a Church is for. The big change in the Church happened in the 1960’s under the leadership of Dennis Wallwork, the local optician, and David Hill. Dennis had attended a Billy Graham Rally in London and came to see the importance of a personal faith in Jesus Christ. Today the Church has two part-time Ministers; Sarah Hargreaves, the Youth Minister, and Ian Ley the Community Outreach Minister.
The Manchester Church, who founded the Church at Roe Green in 1808, belonged to the last group. This may account for the independent nature of the Church and indeed of Roe Greeners themselves.
Roe Green Church is a family friendly church, trying to develop contacts and meet new people in the area. Sunday Service is at 10.45am and includes a separate meeting for children.
The church, as did many nonconformist churches, promoted Temperance, urging abstention from alcohol. Temperance became a national issue in Victorian times as alcohol was seen as blight on families and society.
The Church has just joined the Baptist Union so perhaps it should be known as just “The Church on the Green”. Ian Shaw, Roe Green Church

Support Nick & Jo: Running the 2011 Virgin London Marathon The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet, raising over £500m since the race began in 1981. This year husband and wife team Nick and Jo Townson from Roe Green are running the 2011 Virgin London Marathon for two charities close to their hearts. Jo is running for the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department, where she is a Staff Nurse. It’s a very busy department seeing children not only from Salford and Manchester, but from all over the North West. Jo is raising money to improve resources for Children and their Families when they have to attend the Emergency Department.

Weddings: How do you make your biggest day, the Best Day of your life? It sounds daunting and stressful but “The Wedding” is a very happy occasion, so planning it should be equally as fun. Enjoy the preparation, and to help you here are a few essential planning tips:-
1, Save, Save, Save! Start saving as soon as you get engaged. Although tradition says the bride's parents pay for the wedding, this is frequently untrue for today's couples. Set up a regular standing order to a high interest account, where you know it won’t be touched.
5. The Guest List
2. Set a Budget This is critical for outlining what you can spend, and ensuring you don’t start married life in debt. Create a detailed spreadsheet of all your items to help set out a realistic budget. Set aside a continency, as there will always be unexpected expenses. Work out what you can actually afford to spend overall. At this point you may need to prioritise what's important to you, cross off anything you don't need and look at alternative ways of doing things. Once you have a realistic budget, stick to it and always update your figures when you get more detailed quotes and prices.
3. The Planning Team Good planning is key to the success of your big project and leads to a stress-free wedding day. Be realistic about how much time you can spend planning your wedding and perhaps consider booking a professional wedding planner. If you choose the DIY route, remember to give yourself time - a wedding takes time to organise. Buy a wedding planning book to work out a schedule and keep to it.
4. Find Your Venue The availability and choice of venue for the 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP
ceremony and reception will drive the actual date of the wedding. Choosing the right ones will take time. Review reception venues within a sensible distance to the ceremony before you confirm your booking. When both venues have been chosen, the whole day will then fall into place. If you choose an outdoor venue - be realistic - have a wet weather contingency plan!
Be strict when it comes to the guest-list, even if you risk causing offense. Extra guests can bump the costs up significantly as well as ruin table plans. And if you've said no children, don't make exceptions as this will definitely upset the other parent-guests attending.
6. Delegate and Share the Load You only have one pair of hands and are probably working full time, so ask others to help. They'll be thrilled to be involved. It’ll be fun and you may save money too.
7. Themes and Colour Schemes Flowers, stationery, table linen and even the wedding cake can all designed to complement one another and co-ordinate your wedding look. If you need ideas, look at the season, or your wedding month will also offer a variety of seasonal flowers, which can inspire your scheme.
8. Do Your Research Prices and quality of service can vary hugely and the selection can be overwhelming. Go on referrals or friends' experiences - these provide the safest choices.
9. Setting the Pace Think about the pace of the day. Ideally, you would like it to last as long as possible but a successful wedding is one that flows and where your guests never get bored, hungry or thirsty.

Valentine’s Cocktails Planning a romantic dinner? What better way to start the evening, than with a Champagne Cocktail! RASPBERRY PROSECCO COCKTAIL A pint of fresh, sweet raspberries Good quality honey Dash of brandy Italian Prosecco Take the raspberries and muddle them with the honey to taste, a dash of brandy and a pinch of sugar. Pour into your glasses and top with some Italian Prosecco. Float a berry or two on top with a sprig of mint and you're ready for romance. You can also make this with blueberries, strawberries, blackberries or peaches, but raspberries are the perfect match.
CLASSIC CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL 1 sugar cube Dash Angostura bitters Dash of brandy Champagne Add the sugar cube in the bottom of a champagne flute, add a dash of Angostura bitters to cover the sugar and then add a dash of brandy. Fill to the top with champagne and enjoy! If you don’t like brandy or prefer a lighter cocktail, just leave the brandy out.
KIR ROYALE 1 part crème de cassis 4 parts champagne Pour the iced champagne into a chilled flute glass. Slowly add the crème de cassis so that it gently mingles with the champagne resulting in a pale pink blush. Serve with a twist of lemon. For Kir, substitute white wine for the champagne For Kir Imperiale, use only the best Dom Perignon!

Lose Weight for Good Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express in Swinton, shares her Top 5 Tips! It’s a sad fact that most people who embark on diets give up well before they achieve their goals, and most of those that do reach their target weight will put it all back on, and more. So how do you give yourself the best chance of success?
Here are my top 5 strategies:-
1 CHOOSE A TIMESCALE
4 KEEP A FOOD DIARY
to reach your goal that relies on losing no more than 1.5lbs per week. This means that you won’t have to adopt too restrictive a diet and will allow for the occasional treat, special event and setbacks.
Make up your own sheets or use an online service and record everything you consume. This helps you to stick to your eating programme and also provides a way to discover what may have gone wrong if results don’t turn out as expected. Keeping a food diary has been shown to increase weight loss results by 50% over time.
2 GET SOME SUPPORT Get some sort of support. Whether that is embarking on a weight loss programme with a friend, joining a local weight loss group, or getting professional coaching, it will help you to stay focused and get you back on track when your motivation has dipped.
3 PLAN YOUR EATING Plan your eating. Work out what you need to have in the house or take with you on a journey and then shop and prepare accordingly. That way you are less likely to find yourself having to choose something which works against your goals rather than supports them.
30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
5 EXERCISE REGULARLY That doesn’t necessarily mean long gym sessions or getting up at the crack of dawn to go for a run! Regular short bursts of activity built up over time will burn calories and, more importantly, will make you feel better about yourself and therefore more likely to eat healthily. If you would like more help, then why not listen to this free recording of my best tips for losing weight? Just go to the webpage below, add in your name and email and I can send it to you straight away. You’ll also get a lot of additional free information to help you. http://www.ladiesgym.org/free-weight-loss-mp3/

Secrets of Middlewood - Part II
… of Emperors, Kings, Dukes and Earls Worsley New Hall 1846-1949
It seems hard to believe in the present day, but Worsley in the 19th and early 20th centuries was a popular social destination, not only for our own royalty , but also for the crowned heads of Europe.
Trustee, Robert Haldane Bradshaw, who then resided at the Hall until 1833. The Hall and all its estates were inherited by Lord Francis Egerton, a distant relation of the “Canal Duke”, and he was “forced to resign”.
The magnet for this attraction was the local aristocracy, initially the “Canal Duke”, the Duke of Bridgewater and later his heirs, the Egerton family the Earls of Ellesmere. Such was their wealth and prestige, stemming from their ownership of the coal mines and Canal, not to mention vast acreages of land, that they could afford to entertain the highest in the land in style.
In 1837, four years after he inherited the Worsley estates, Lord Francis Egerton arrived to take up residence. He soon decided both the Old Hall and Brick Hall lacked the grandeur befitting his position and commissioned the famous architect Sir Edward Blore to design a new hall that would celebrate the fashionable Victorian Gothic style and provide for his ambitions to provide hospitality to the great and the good.
The initial wealth was built by the Duke with his ambitious development of his assets. However, his original inheritance of Worsley Old Hall as a residence was considered too small and outdated so in 1759, around the time that his famous canal was built, the Duke ordered the construction of “The Brick Hall” - an elegant 3 storey building in the new “Georgian” style, facing south overlooking the canal, in what is now Middlewood. The Duke had just a suite of rooms at the new Hall for when he visited Worsley and described the Hall as his “Steward’s house”. John Gilbert, who administered the Worsley estates for the Duke, was installed there. 1n 1795, Gilbert died and the administration and tenancy were passed onto his son until 1803 when the old Duke died. The Duke’s Will stipulated that his estates, mines and the Canal should form the Bridgewater Trust and be administered by a Superintendent 38 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Completed in 1846, the New Hall was almost seven years in the making. It was a vast four-storey mansion garnished with pinnacles, turrets and towers and surrounded by stables and outbuildings over a spacious levelled area. The Brick Hall was then totally demolished. The interior of the New Hall was as grand as its exterior. Adorned by the work of fashionable artists of the day, the finest wood carvings and fittings garnered from other stately homes of much longer lineage.

Entrance Gates to former Worsley New Hall, Leigh Road
Built on the highest point of land south of Leigh Road, the Hall was approached by a choice of three drives: Through a Lodge and great wrought-iron gates opposite St Mark’s Church (the latter can now be seen further along Leigh Road) Via a bridge over Leigh Road from the Old Hall (the piers still exist) From the Lodge and Kitchen Garden which still exist and form the Garden Centre. One of the glories of the Hall, which have sadly vanished, were its gardens. They swept down from the terrace and sloped down to a beautiful lake, complete with an island and romantic “folly” causeway. So grand was the Hall and so respected the owners for their hospitality that it enjoyed many eminent visitors: Queen Victoria visited in 1851 and 1857 The Prince and Princess of Wales came in 1869 and again in 1909 as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The Crown Prince of Germany and Empress Eugenie were also guests. In 1914, at the outbreak of war, the Hall was offered to the army and used as a hospital for officers. The Egerton/Ellesmere family left the area permanently and severed the aristocratic link with Worsley. The Fourth Earl sold the estates in 1923 to the newly-formed Bridgewater Estates Limited for £3.3m (probably hundreds of millions at present-day values!). In the following years the new owners attempted to sell the Hall, without success. Visit our new website www.onourdoorstep.co.uk
The Lodge at Worsley Garden Centre
In the Second World War, used again by the military, providing temporary quarters for evacuees from Dunkirk, then as a home for the 218th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers until 1942. In 1943, the top floor was damaged by fire after which it was used to billet American soldiers awaiting the D-Day landings. Those were the last occupants as, riddled with dry rot and undermined by subsidence by the very mines which had brought its former owners great wealth, it was condemned to demolition. It was sold for a mere £2,500 to a Mr Littler, a scrap merchant, who began demolition in 1946 and completed it in 1949. What became of its precious wood carvings and other riches is not known. The building itself was razed to the ground but, there is still much to be found in the “jungle” which has grown over the site. Apart from easily-found remains such as the garden centre Lodge and Kitchen Garden, there are boundary walls and portals, stone terraces on which the Hall stood, the Lake and folly remains and, of course the great gates on Leigh Road. No doubt the BBC’s “Time Team” could make a great programme on the “Two Lost Halls of Worsley” Written by John Kirwin with acknowledgements to:“The History of Worsley” and “Daveweb.co.uk” Please note: the paths around Middlewood are currently being renewed and temporarily closed to the public. Saying Goodbye: Local Bereavement Support When someone you love dies there are many sorrows and also many “firsts” to be endured. The first Christmas, the first birthday, the first anniversary, to name but a few. Christmas and New Year can be particularly poignant. The whole world seems to be celebrating except you, making your sorrow worse. You don’t want to upset anyone by being sad but it’s difficult to feel anything else. It is hard to know where to turn. Today, families are often smaller, sons and daughters have moved away. Clergymen, Doctors all seem too busy to help. So who has the time to spare to listen? Who understands the sadness that you feel? Perhaps the group that meets at Holy Cross Hall could help. We have all lost a loved one and know perhaps how you feel. Everyone’s loss is different yet in some way the same. We are willing to help and listen. If you want to share your feelings, come and join us on the first `Tuesday of the month. Holy Cross hall is behind the church on Liverpool Road, just by Patricroft Bridge. We are there the first Tuesday of each month, 10am-12pm. We would love to see you.
