Welcome Happy New Year! albeit a belated one. Welcome to the first issue of 2012. We are celebrating our 2nd anniversary! It’s hard to believe we launched our first issue in January 2010 - the last two years have flown by. We have teamed up with local business “Once Upon a Teacup” to offer a Vintage Tea Party for Six in our fabulous competition (p.18) - so you can celebrate for us! January has been a quiet month, but now Spring is approaching, it’s time to get busy! Nick from Green ‘n’ Tidy tells us what we should be doing in the garden in February and March. Whilst you are thinking about the garden, why not get some chickens this year and produce your own eggs? We have some simple suggestions for Mothers Day gifts - meaningful gestures which won’t cost the earth. Try our easy Strawberry Cupcake recipe and impress your Valentine or Mum with your baking skills! Happy reading and enjoy the days as they gradually get longer!

The Community Egg Project Chickens...the new family pet! Chickens make excellent family pets, they are just the ticket! If you are pushed for space, a self contained chicken run will give your girls plenty of space to scratch around during the day. Alternatively, if space isn’t an issue, these small inquisitive birds will thrive in a

February

Sees signs of spring the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and birds and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There's plenty to do indoors this month, all in preparation for the season ahead. Outdoors, the garden is coming to life again, and it’s time to prune shrubs, such as Wisteria.

Prune conservatory climbers 10. Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter

March

Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It's time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Spring: the Start of the Kitten Season Help reduce the number of unwanted kittens New Year is a time for looking forward, for sizing up the next twelve months and for making those all important resolutions after the Christmas binge. At the RSPCA we have much to prepare for, but one of the biggest problems we will face in the spring is the start of the kitten season. The sheer volume of unwanted kittens coming into our care at this time is staggering and, of course, often hugely disheartening.

Kittens without homes

Many people still believe that it is better for a cat to have one litter before being neutered, but this is simply untrue and merely adds to the thousands of unwanted animals that end up homeless each and every year. The only option available to help avoid this situation and help animal charities like ours that have to cope with the influx of unwanted litters is a remarkably simple one: NEUTERING. A simple and routine operation, castrations and spays have a multitude of benefits for both cat and owner. For example, a neutered cat will never contract testicular or uterine cancer, is less likely to mark their territory or stray and, of course, will never have an unwanted pregnancy. Plus, did you know, just one pair of unneutered adult male and female cats can be responsible for up to 50 million offspring? 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

For an owner, the cost is low: around £30-50 depending on the vet and gender of the cat, and if you are on benefits or in receipt of state pension it is less than £20 at the RSPCA Animal Hospital. For the RSPCA the costs of rescuing and rehoming just one cat is a staggering £210. So, this New Year why not give your cat a new start too and save from adding to the 18 million cat population in the country.

Ellesmere Park’s own “Time Team”: Excavation of the Roman Road In the summer of 2011 the Ellesmere Park Residents’ Association commissioned an engraved stone seat and two stone benches to commemorate the excavation of the Roman road that runs through the Three Sisters Nature Reserve in the heart of Ellesmere Park. The seventonne seats were installed with the help of two local businessmen, Jonathan Seddon (Seddon Group Ltd) and Ken Palmer (Palmer Demolition Ltd). The residents of Ellesmere Park excavated the Roman road in June 2005 as part of the Time Team “Big Roman Dig”. The road was believed to have been constructed in about 200AD and connected the fortress town of Mamucium (Manchester) with Coccium (Wigan). It is thought that the road was used to supply Mamucium with coal and other raw materials from the surrounding areas towards Coccium. With the help of the Wigan Archaeological Society the road was located using a ground resistance ‘geophys’ survey. The excavation took place over a two week period and involved digging three separate trenches to positively determine the track of the road. The team confirmed direction and width of the road; it followed a perfectly straight line across the field, as would be expected with a

Roman road, and it was approximately 7m (22 feet) wide. It is believed that the total extent of the road still surviving is some 110m. Given the urban location, it is very rare for a significant length of Roman road to have survived in such good condition. The construction of the road was that of a classic rural Roman road. The surface had a definite camber to allow the water to drain into the ditches running alongside the road. The road surface was made of local stone, in this case river-washed alluvial stone, probably from what is now the River Irwell, which in Roman times was a wide flood plain west of Manchester. The northern side of the road was constructed on a bed of branches, presumably because the ground was very wet and needed some form of foundation. This material has now decomposed and forms a characteristic black carbon layer under the road. As part of the project the residents arranged for over 180 school children from 6 different schools to visit the site allowing them to gain experience of an archaeological excavation. It is hoped that visitors to the Three Sisters using the new seating will reflect on the history that lies only a few inches beneath their feet. If you would like more information on the Roman road through Ellesmere Park contact John Rabbitt at EPRA.Eccles@googlemail.com

Second Kip McGrath Professional Tuition Centre opens in Salford offering after school tuition for children 5-16 years. Local teacher, Justine Gray has opened a Kip McGrath Education Centre in Monton. With 15 years teaching experience in maths and English behind her Justine decided to offer the services of Kip McGrath to local children after visiting the well established centre in Walkden. Samantha Craig, who opened Kip McGrath, Walkden 8 years ago and now oversees 26 centres across the North West, inspired Justine to set up her own tuition business. “The teaching resources and the learning environment were like a breath of fresh air!” declared Justine. “I knew that this was something I would be good at and that I could make a real difference to children in my local community”.

Kip McGrath is a well-established company with over 30 years of experience and over 600 centres worldwide helping school aged students to succeed. The wide range of programmes offered are tailored to the child’s specific needs using a wide variety of resources and delivered by experienced and qualified teachers. Sessions are weekly and last for 1 hour 20 minutes. They include 1:1 tuition, independent activities, computer based work, educational games and homework. Feedback to parents is given after each and every lesson so they know exactly what their child is achieving and what steps need to be taken next. Feedback from parents is positive:“Since my daughter has attended Kip McGrath her confidence has soared and her work has dramatically improved. Justine is a fabulous teacher and both my children now attend and look forward to each session.” Mrs. Kelly

i-Lipo : The intelligent alternative to liposuction i-Lipo™ is the latest in laser lipolysis, offering you a way to achieve inch loss and body contouring with no pain, no needles and no down time. How does it work? The i-lipo uses a low level of visible red laser light to stimulate the body's natural processes that empty the stored fat contents inside fat cells. The laser energy creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, temporarily opening pores in the cell wall through which the fat contents can escape. The contents are then transported around the body to the tissues that will use them during metabolism to create energy. Thus i-Lipo is not creating any unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. This metabolism of the contents permanently removes them from the body leaving smaller fat cells and giving you inch loss.

i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men and women.

What Svelte Body clients say.... Ann from Worsley - Oct 2011:I lost several inches on my first session which amazed me from such a simple, fuss free and painless procedure. After 8 sessions I lost the equivalent of a dress size around my stomach area. Free use of the power plate was an added bonus & helped tone the rest of my body. In just 4 weeks I feel more comfortable in my bikini & its given me the incentive I need to keep on exercising. The therapists were always friendly, accommodating & flexible on timing of appointments.

From Louise - Boothstown - Oct 2011:I had been fed up with my hip & thigh area for as long as I can remember. Size 8-10 in clothing, I doubted that i-lipo would have any effect. After 5 sessions the results began to show & my clothes proved it. The appearance of the area treated also improved - Amazing ! Over the 8 sessions I managed to treat both areas & lost a total of 11 inches. My clothes feel so much better & I am feeling much more confident wearing them. I am really pleased with the results & would recommend you give it a try. After all, if there is an answer why suffer !
