salfordautism Led and run by Autistic People for Autistic people salfordautism, the new group working with Salford City Council to support anyone in Salford affected by autism and those around them, has been very busy over the Christmas period. As well as working with national and local bodies to inform and develop local services for autistic people, we have been getting to know local groups and helping a range of individuals with everyday problems that make living with autism that much worse. The 24/7 0845 emergency contact line has been a lifeline to adults in crisis and worried parents of autistic children alike, offering information and guidance, someone to listen and understand (we understand 'cos we live it!) and, where necessary, get involved and 'do something'. Networking with other individuals and groups nationwide through Facebook, Twitter and email has helped to spread news and information from the world of autism, linking people together to

challenge inappropriate perceptions and poor service, and is getting results. The twice-monthly open day/drop in at Eccles Town Hall provides a chance to socialise and compare notes with others in similar situations, get advice and information, or just talk to someone face to face. We have helped individuals with problems getting and keeping jobs, housing issues, benefits and generally making sense of the confusing world that can overawe individuals and parents around and after a diagnosis. Whether there is a formal diagnosis or not, if you are someone affected by autism, or know someone who is, call us. We are here to help.

BRIDGEWATER

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE As your child draws to the end of their primary school education you are faced with a range of choices. You’ll no doubt want your child educating across a broad number of subjects to achieve the best results that they are capable of, whilst enjoying themselves as they grow up and develop their own sense of self to go out into this world as an individual. Please take your time to think about the time your child will spend in school and how you would like them to turn out at the end of their schooling. Ideally you’ll want your child brought up in a safe, family environment that matches your values, where they are known personally throughout their schooling from their early years to adulthood, and to entering their chosen profession or University.

We could say that we would provide that and more for you and your child. It would be better still to let you hear what the last ISA school inspection report said of Bridgewater School. They said that pupils’ personal development is outstanding, and that the school is highly successful in its aim to develop pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural understanding. Pupils are confident, articulate and sensitive to each other’s needs. The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association went on to say “I think that what Bridgewater does so wonderfully is sow a seed inside each and every pupil that will grow into something very special.” Please feel free to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the Head and a tour of the school.

A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO DAY NURSERIES

Bridgewater School offers a warm, safe, caring and stimulating environment where enjoyment is key to successful learning. Children are encouraged to play and develop through a structured pre-school curriculum. Parents can be satisfied with the knowledge their children will be taught by highly qualified, carefully selected staff who are skilled and experienced in this area. Our EYFS Department provides a spacious, work and play environment for the Kindergarten and Reception classes. We deliver outstanding childcare provision, which offers your child the best start in life. Children gain a full and positive experience of school, as they make the transition from our Early Years Department to Key Stage 1 and beyond.

For more information please visit www.Bridgewater-school.co.uk or call 0161 794 1463 to arrange a personal tour. VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Monton in 2015! Welcome to another fun-filled year in and around Monton, there is so much going on, to do and to get involved with. First, a fun night out for all Monton’s Movers and Shakers! Have fun and do good. Book 27th February into your diary for the February Fun-night. The evening, to be held at Worsley Golf Club, will include: Jess Kemp, the in-demand acoustic singer/songwriter; a short fun bingo session; a general knowledge quiz (organise your team now); raffle and more TBC. MVCA are organising this fund raiser as part of a project to extend the only playground in Monton, on Shackleton Street.

Monton High Street continues to go from strength to strength. Several new businesses have opened recently - a dress shop, estate agents, barbers and a new bar soon to open where the old post office was, all of which compliment the current businesses and give us even more reason to keep it local! Including: How fantastic! Our own Malt Dog was short listed for the Manchester Evening News City Life Awards in the “Best Bar” category. By the time we have gone to press we know they will have won! But great to be recognised and well deserved, whatever the result.

Keep an eye on www.montonvillage.org.uk; @Ilovemonton and our facebook page for more details. Tickets £10 to include hot pot supper.

Lastly, check out the NEW MVCA website for details about all the above. www.montonvillage.org.uk

HOME BOARDING FAMILIES NEEDED People say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs is a company called Digs for Dogs. Digs for Dogs offers a professional, caring service where pets are accommodated in a loving home environment with select families whilst their owners are away from home for whatever reason. Pets are suitably matched with a loving home boarding family who continues the owner’s existing routine for exercising and feeding, and whose environment is similar to the pet’s own home. If you love dogs and would enjoy the company of a visiting dog on a flexible basis then this is a great alternative to owning your own dog. Home Boarders can enjoy all the doggy fun without the financial responsibility! All visiting dogs come with food, bedding etc. so there is no cost implication for the Home Boarder. LIFE AND DEATH IN THE MINES Local Coal Mining Illustration of the Astley deep pit used in the Illustrated London News 1874

The local coal mining industry, apart from cotton spinning and weaving, was once the economic lifeblood of Lancashire. But it was an appalling way to make a living. Over the course of 300 years hundreds of thousands of men, women and children toiled deep beneath the earth, in the dimmest of light, in toxic air; with the possibility of a violent death, by explosion, tunnel collapse, or drowning.

siblings worked with their mothers, hauling tubs of coal from the working coalface to the bottom of the shaft where it was lifted to the surface. They were known as “Hurriers”, which gives some idea of the speed at which they were expected to work… Fathers and elder brothers laboured at the coalface, in cramped and crumbling space, hacking the coal loose with picks, shovels and bare hands.

The Hazards The Mines The mines were owned by local gentry and aristocracy, all motivated by profit and largely indifferent to the plight of their workers. The Coalfield was plagued by the facts that the mineral itself - being high quality bituminous - was highly volatile, the geology of the area is badly fractured by faults (some still active) and water intrusion ever-present. Ventilation of the mines, in the early days and even later, was a particular problem. Single shaft mines tended to accumulate “fire damp” gas, heavier than air, which could explode at any time and there was no means of introducing fresh air. The only early solution was to burn a brazier at the base of the shaft to vent the gases, but at the dawn of each working day a worker swathed in wet rags and carrying a long pole with a burning candle at the end, would be sent into the mine. It was his unfortunate job to explode any gas – and hopefully survive the experience! In later years a system of doors was introduced in the tunnels to contain the gas. Such doors would be operated by children, known as “Trappers” who would generally be a mere 6 years old! Such infants were put to work by their parents out of economic necessity, in almost total darkness, for pennies. Their elder 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Before 1850 few records were kept of “accidents” in the mines, since owners either did not care or, worse, suppressed bad news. It is, however, almost certain that thousands died in earlier centuries. When records began to be kept they revealed that the Lancashire Coalfield, between 1850-4, had the worst safety record in the entire Country. In those years 299 mineworkers were killed by explosions or tunnel collapse. In 1859, a further 125 died. The greatest tragedy occurred in 1910 when the total workforce in the Coalfield exceeded 100,000. The Pretoria Pit, operated by the Hulton Company, exploded and 344 miners died due to the use of a faulty lamp igniting a concentration of gas. Plainly, in those days, there was no “Health and Safety Act” to protect them. The Pretoria disaster was the third greatest single mining calamity ever recorded in this country. Local History

Despite improvements in much later years the carnage continued – as late as 1979 ten miners died in a Golborne pit in an explosion caused by an electrical spark igniting a pocket of gas.

The “Rewards” In the early 19th century mine owners employed workers on a “Bond” system by which they paid the worker a small advance. This immediately placed the worker, and any other employed members of his family, in immediate debt. The Bond bound them to a year’s work . If any member, for whatever reason, failed to work the entire period, then a large financial forfeit had to be paid to the employer. The Bond system was also useful to the employer in enforcing discipline and frustrating any move for unionisation. In 1799 the Government supported the mine owners by passing the “Combination Act” which made unions illegal. Some owners paid their workers not in money, but in ”tokens” or vouchers. These only had value in the Company shops where, of course, prices were also fixed by the mine owner. Such practices were only outlawed in 1831 by the reforming “Truck Act”. The Duke of Bridgewater was comparatively generous. He paid in real money, a princely 40p a day (equivalent) for a 15 hour shift, six days a week. Children earned just 5p per day. However, should any worker be late, then the good Duke fined them 12p… His workers saw the light of day, in winter, only on Sunday. Such were the prevailing wages that they were only slightly better than the meagre support of Poor Law Relief, which involved the shame of destitution and residing in the “Workhouse”.

Progress The Act of 1831 was followed, in 1842, by the Mines Act. This latter prohibited the use of women, girls and boys under ten years of age from working underground. But, out of necessity many women continued and Inspectors turned a “blind eye” to the practice. Women became, for the most part, “Pit Brow Lassies”, who sorted coal from slag at the surface. Unions formed under the guise of “Friendly Societies” until they became legitimate in 1881. But radical change did not come until 1945.

Women pit brow workers of the Wigan Coal & Iron Company, 1918.

Nationalisation Following WW2, the coal industry was Nationalised and the National Union of Mineworkers became a force to be reckoned with. Mines were modernised, many were closed as being uneconomic. Working conditions had started to improve after the General Strike of 1926 and now gathered pace. Pithead baths, canteens, better safety measures and training were instituted. Locally, the National Coal Board had offices at Worsley Old Hall and administered all the mines on the Coalfield. Mine Rescue Services were centred on the facility on Ellenbrook Road in Boothstown which had been commissioned in 1933. This Grade II listed building exists to the present day and was responsible for all rescue in the event of a disaster on the Coalfield. It housed a permanent team and all the equipment necessary for rescue plus a laboratory and training facilities to simulate explosion, gas, tunnel collapse and flooding. Quaintly, it also possessed an Aviary to house canaries, those little birds that were used to test for the presence of gas – if they breathed and survived then it was safe ! Such was a now vanished industry, one that tested human courage and endurance to the ultimate. Written by: John Kirwin

THE ENIGMA OF

MONTON VETERANS’ SHELTER designed by the Borough Surveyor, commenting that it was not what they had expected but what the ‘City Fathers’ felt Monton should have, and ‘it could have had more comfortable seats’! Monton was disappointed. No joyful opening ceremony took place, ruling out the ‘opening ceremony’ theory for the photograph. The ‘military presence’, suggested as evidence that the Shelter was dedicated as a War Memorial, is actually a lone Bugler.

The Event The Photograph This unpublished photograph, belonging to the owners of the former Eccles Journal, can be found in Salford History Library. It has been the subject of speculation and mystery and has been attributed to having been taken at the opening ceremony of Monton Veterans’ Shelter or the Shelter’s dedication as a War Memorial. Neither is true. It was taken when the Monton Shelter played a small part in national history in the 1930s. In 1928, the Revd A G Fox, Vicar, St Paul’s Church, campaigned for the building of a shelter on Monton Green for the use of ‘Veterans of Industry’ (pensioners) during inclement weather. The Council’s rejection of the application provoked strong feeling amongst the old men of Monton. The Vicar, along with Councillor James Staton Speakman, responded and called a public meeting. Over 200 people crammed into the Francis Street School. The ‘elite’ of Monton gave their support for a shelter for old men. Local councillors, aware of public opinion, supported the application to the Council for a modest shelter, costing about £25, to accommodate 25 to 30 people. The Council agreed. In 1930 the Church Magazine reported the completion of the Victorian Promenade Shelter, 40 ON OUR DOORSTEP

From archive photographs of Mayors in the 1930s, Councillor J S Speakman, who campaigned for the shelter, is identified as the Mayor in the photograph. His term, and therefore the event, occurred during 1935/6. The unusually large document is the pivotal factor in determining the reason for the event. On 24 January 1936, the Eccles Journal carried a photograph showing Mayor Speakman, accompanied by the same Bugler, on Eccles Town Hall steps. Crucially, the Mayor is reading from the large document. It was reported that, following the death of King George V on 20th January, Edward VIII, who later abdicated, was proclaimed King throughout the land. This Proclamation was read throughout the Borough by the Mayor, first at Eccles Town Hall, then at the Peel Green Tram Terminus and lastly at Monton, where local people assembled as Bugler James Powell, Lancashire Fusiliers (Territorials), sounded the alarm. Accompanied by Civic Dignitaries, the Mayor, Councillor J S Speakman, read the Proclamation. Monton Veterans’ Shelter welcomed the ‘City Fathers’ and made a fitting backdrop for this historical announcement.
