Let your little one splash into the new year with Puddle Ducks Puddle Ducks East Lancs is taking bookings for its 2016 Spring term – a great way to kick off the new year in the right way by signing up the little ones to a fun and educational swimming class. As a preschool swimming specialist there are a number of classes available from birth to five years of age. You don’t need to wait until your baby has had their first immunisations, swimming is totally safe for them and joining a swimming class from birth is the best way to develop confidence in the water. And for new mums it’s a great way to meet people, take part in a fun activity with your bundle of

joy and then enjoy the peace and quiet when you get home as your baby has a wonderful sleep. We only book eight children into each session, which lasts 30 minutes and is a carefully balanced set of activities including group and individual work, swimming, submersion, floating, songs and games. We hold classes in Swinton and Radcliffe at Springwood Primary and Millwood Primary School respectively. A New Year, a New Challenge...

Manchester Dragoneers We are a Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team, members of Paddlers for Life. We encourage ladies (and some men) who have undergone treatment for Breast Cancer to come and join us on Saturday mornings at Debdale Outdoor Centre (Junction 24 of the M60) at 10.00am to take part in a fun and unique exercise.

Cancer Dragon Boat Festival in Florence, Italy in 2018. We have two seasons to train and fund raise to take part in the wonderful event, which will see over 100 Breast Cancer Dragon Boat teams from all over the world joining together to celebrate life. Paddlers and Supporters are all very welcome.

It really is beneficial following BC treatment as the paddling action helps your upper body movement, restores energy levels and we are fully inclusive regardless of your athletic ability or age (average age 40 - 70). We are hoping to establish a full Manchester crew (22 ladies) to join us and train for the International Breast

For more details contact Ann Johnson: Email: ann.johnson57@btinternet.com or Tel: 07976 529708. Ann is from Swinton herself and the team has paddlers and supporters from Monton, Swinton and Astley. The group take winter walks through Worsley and Christmas lunch at the Blue Bell.

Village Update

Roe Green Heritage Trail Our History Board is now in situ at last after many delays!! It stands just south of Roe Green playground, near the picnic tables on an attractive stone plinth, charting the fascinating history of Roe Green. On opening ceremony was held on Saturday 14th November when our President Mrs. Joan Clay performed the unveiling ceremony, attended by many members of the public, the committee and Councillors. 27 points of interest are marked in sequence, making up a walk of approximately 2 miles taking you around Roe Green, Beesley Green, down the loopline and back up, touring sites such as Kempnough Hall, Beesley Bridge, Beesley Hall, Roe Green Church and sites

where historical buildings no longer exist. Trail maps are available from The Post Office, or members of the Friends of Roe Green Committee for a small charge. They are pocket size but contain a wealth of information about the village. It’s an informative and interesting walk definitely worth doing and learning more about our local area. Friends of Roe Green was established in 2007 to protect and support the historic and traditional character of the village, which is a conservation area. Village Update

FUNDING FOR REFURBISHMENT NEEDED Roe Green Play Park is at risk of closure. The existing equipment is in urgent need of refurbishment. Parts of the play area are becoming dangerous and, due to its age, equipment cannot be replaced. Salford City Council has already taken sections away. The Council has limited funds available to repair and upgrade the park. Hence a committee of enthusiastic local parents was set up in November with the aim of raising £100,000 and driving forward the refurbishment plans.

We won Salford City Council's Recycle & Reward Scheme in December - resulting in our first grant of £1,000.

It has been a busy couple of months since the last update. Roe Green Play Park was shortlisted in December as one of the Council's good causes in its Recycle & Reward Scheme in the Worsley, Boothstown and Ellenbrook community area.

Please follow us on Roe Green Play Park and Roe Green Park for the latest information about the play park designs, our fundraising efforts in 2016 and how you can get involved. Or, email us at roegreenpark@gmail.com.

It is really important that we get the thoughts and opinions of local residents and park users. A questionnaire was delivered to the local Roe Green area in December and January. We have also delivered them to the children at our local primary schools. If you didn’t receive one, please email us at roegreenpark@gmail.com. It's really important that we receive feedback and input from the community about your play park.

Salford's in bloom with new RHS Garden in Worsley Worsley New Hall: Built 1840-1845, demolished in 1949

It’s blooming good news for local residents who will be able to enjoy a national RHS garden on their doorstep. In a spectacular coup for the city, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) announced plans to bring back to life the lost historic grounds at Worsley New Hall in Salford. The 156 acre site forms part of the third Duke of Bridgewater’s estate and adjoins the Bridgewater Canal in Worsley. City Mayor Ian Stewart said: “This is a major national project which is a long-term investment not just for Salford but for the whole of Greater Manchester. It is a project on the scale of and with the impact of MediaCityUK in terms of being a game changer for our city and will bring life to the heart of the Northern Powerhouse. RHS’ commitment to deliver this ambitious project is testimony to the city’s continued transformation.” Planned to open in 2019, the stunning new RHS Garden is the result of collaboration between the owners of the historic estate, Peel Land and Property, Salford City Council and the RHS. It will join the RHS’ current portfolio of gardens at Wisley in Surrey, Rosemoor in Devon, Hyde Hall in Essex and Harlow Carr in Yorkshire. RHS Garden Bridgewater forms part of their wider ten year £160 million national investment programme’ to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place.

RHS Director General, Sue Biggs, says: “We always thought it would take us longer to find our Fifth Garden, but with its beautiful landscapes, good public transport links and outstanding location, Worsley New Hall was an opportunity we couldn’t miss.” The renowned landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith has been appointed to create an overall master plan for RHS Garden Bridgewater which will forge links with regional educational bodies to develop new apprenticeship and student programmes. Public engagement will be extensive and include volunteering and learning opportunities as well as community events. Horticultural highlights will include the restoration of the ten acre Walled Kitchen Garden, one of the largest in the UK; recreating and developing historical features such as the tree lined Garden Approach and recovering the Terraces, which sit between the lake and the site of the lost Worsley New Hall. The RHS will also build a new Learning Centre for schools for the benefit of thousands of young people in the region. John Whittaker, Chairman of The Peel Group said: “The RHS are perfect to bring this area to life and the Fifth Garden will leave an incredible legacy for the people of Salford.” The RHS has been the force behind the nation’s gardening for over 200 years, enriching lives through plants and helping to make the UK a greener and more beautiful place.

Your Beauty Problems Answered Q: I have lines around my lips and mouth what products can you recommend? A: We have various lip treatments to treat the skin on and around the mouth. Dermal filler is ideal to permanently and dramatically fill and smooth lines. Q: I have very ght/dry skin from running outdoors in the cold winter months...however I am s ll ge ng spots! What can I do? A: The superficial layers of the skin are dehydrated and your skin needs treatment. If the skin loses water via environmental damage or central heating, it will produce oil to compensate hence the breakouts. Drinking water will not remedy this. You will need a product to rehydrate the skin. Pop in for a free consultation/chat and samples to try.

Q. Which is be er injectable muscle relaxers or a facial? A: A question o en asked but unfortunately they work hand in hand. Injectable muscle relaxers do just that; relax the muscle. A facial will treat the skin, not the muscle. A good skincare routine will give you healthy balanced skin which can be enhanced with injectable cosmetics. We offer free skin scanning and digital skin tests and can advise the best way forward for you. Q: I get small lumps of skin around my collar on my shirt and beard. What are they? A: They sound like skin tags from friction. Our nurse can remove them but we would need to see them first to give an accurate treatment recommendation.

Paintings by Joseph Parry (1808): Eccles Wakes

ECCLES “WAKES” Readers of a certain age may well recall that when we were children there existed a traditional holiday period known as “Wakes Weeks”. In Eccles this was generally the last week of August and the first in September, but the timing varied from town to town. Throughout Lancashire and parts of Cheshire, this was the time when entire towns downed tools, quit their looms and packed off to Blackpool and other resorts for our annual holiday. Such a phenomenom no longer exists but it persisted in Eccles and other towns until the 1950s when it died, along with the cotton industry and the coal mines. By then all knowledge of the origin of this curious holiday time had been lost and of the ancient festival that the “Wakes” commemorated. Travelling fairs would occupy a former mill site on Liverpool Road and the fair itself became known as “the Wakes”.

PIETY It is believed that the Wakes owed their origins to an annual celebration of the Dedication of the local Parish Church to its Patron Saint and was a purely religious occasion. It probably started in the 13th or 14th century when parishes were much greater in extent and sparsely populated than is the case in the present day. In the case of Eccles , for example, the parish was vast and extended as far as Deane, now a suburb of Bolton. However, distance was irrelevant, all parishioners were expected to attend the annual anniversary of the Dedication. So, on poor roads and all weather conditions, the faithful left their 38 ON OUR DOORSTEP

villages in procession and made their way to the church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eccles on the first Sunday after August 25th each year. Before setting out they collected rushes on a cart to play their part in refreshing the earthen floor of the Church. As time went by the carts became decorated, the walkers wore their best attire and a spirit of competition existed between different districts. There was entertainment in the form of Morris Dancing and singing and dance enlivened each procession. It was a holiday after all, three days in which to meet distant friends and relatives. The population of Eccles would swell from that of a village to more like a small town and enterprising locals would set up stalls offering refreshments and trinkets to the pilgrims in the church yard. The Wakes retained its religious focus until The Reformation of Henry VIII, but after this movement had taken effect any practices which were identified as Catholic ritual, were suppressed throughout the Country - with one notable exception, the North West. Here they morphed into an annual social event, an opportunity for merrymaking !

REVELRY Tolerated in Tudor times the Wakes had a much tougher challenge in the Puritan 17th century. These religious zealots detested any activity which smacked of enjoyment and Eccles Parish Church had such a Vicar. Yet still the Wakes survived, albeit in, no doubt, a subdued fashion in those difficult times. Eccles Wakes found new vigour after the Puritans and blossomed VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Local History

into almost a regional attraction.. No longer was it a pious social occasion, it became, year on year, ever more ambitious and boisterous... Outdoor “sports” were introduced and all manner of competitions – the more outrageous and sillier the better! The event was no longer in the Churchyard, it had migrated to the length of Church Street and down around the Cross. Further still, a horse racing course existed at the present-day Recreation Ground. Outdoor “sports” were introduced which involved foot races, “A one mile race for a Smock”. Competitions of all kinds and absurdity: a dancing competition for Old Maids; a smoking competition for the same; feats of strength; chasing a greased pig, presumably to get it as a prize; “Gurning” through a horse collar to achieve the ugliest face; a competition to eat the greatest amount of thick porridge. At Prestwich Wakes they had another eating race eating 3lbs of treacle and bread! And with all this there was drinking, lots of drinking, a three day binge of drinking! To say that anarchy prevailed for the period of the Wakes, would be an understatement. Songs dedicated to the Eccles Wakes were written and sung in the pubs of the town with men and women equally participating – including the brawling.

CRUELTY By the early 1800s the brutal practices of Bull-baiting and Cockfighting were being eliminated across the Country following the strenuous campaigning of “Humanity Dick” Martin, an Irish MP who led the fight to found the RSPCA in later years. But NOT in Eccles. The now notorious Eccles Wakes proudly featured not only bullbaiting and cockfighting, but also Bear-baiting and the same torment for badgers!

In 1832 the organisers announced that “the most ancient, loyal, national, constitutional and lawful diversion, Bull-Baiting, in all its primitive excellence for which this place (Eccles) has long been noted”, would be a major attraction. This always took place in the centre of the town close to the Cross. There stood a sturdy stone pillar (possibly a remnant of an earlier Cross) to which a bull would be

chained. The hapless animal would then be set upon by 3 dogs in turn, then given a “breather” before enduring the same ordeal through the day. Cockfighting was also very popular and a Cockpit existed on the site of the present Eccles Town Hall. An opportunity for gambling on a large scale at the expense of brutally maimed cockerels... If this was not enough the Kings Head pub promised bull, bear and badger baiting throughout the day!

NOTORIETY The infamy of Eccles Wakes badly damaged the reputation of the growing town. The violence, damage and general mayhem, not to mention the debauched behaviour so distressing to Victorian sensitivities, stirred local notables to action. In 1877 the Eccles Local Board, the committee responsible for administration of the Town took extreme measures. They petitioned the Home Secretary, a senior Member of National Government, to BAN the Eccles Wakes. Not, we should note, all other surviving Wakes of neighbouring Lancashire towns, but Eccles Wakes in particular! The deed was done and around 600 years of “fun” was eliminated. All that now exists to remind us of those decadent days is a mural on the wall of a building close to the Church. Originally by artist Ed Povey, in 1980 it, vividly depicts all the activities of the Wakes celebrations. In need of repair it was repainted by Chris Butcher and Sarah Yates in 2012. Those were the days...
