Welcome Happy 2017! January has flown by but hopefully we have all settled back into our routines, shed the Christmas excess and made a positive start to the New Year. Charity News

“Curing cancer in children is a big challenge, we need your support.” Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research is a Salfordbased charity, founded in 2002, that funds and manages research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Kidscan receive no statutory funding, relying entirely on contributions from the public, volunteers, business and funds generated through events for their groundbreaking research to continue. Kidscan exists because cancer is the leading cause of death in UK children, with six families facing a diagnosis every day. One in every four children diagnosed with cancer won’t make it to their 30th birthday, and even those that do are left with side effects of treatment that can be lifelong and life-limiting. Kidscan’s team of scientists are developing treatments which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults whilst retaining

the strengths of many current treatments. Key aims of the charity include curing children with cancer, improving the treatment of children with cancer by developing new treatments and supporting programmes specifically for children suffering with cancer, constantly striving to help ever child with cancer to survive and thrive. How can you help? From making a donation at kidscan.org.uk/donate, creating your own fundraising event, taking part in a sponsored event to helping by volunteering and promoting Kidscan, there are many ways you can help to fund the important research Kidscan carries out. Visit kidscan.org.uk to find out how you can help children with cancer to survive and thrive.

thousands of people joining in to raise an amazing amount for the hospice. Calling all Animal Lovers...

Support the RSPCA in 2017 The RSPCA Manchester and Salford is the local rehoming branch of the RSPCA and we are a separately registered charity from the national RSPCA and the animal hospital in Salford. Our role is to rehabilitate and rehome the animals the RSPCA inspectors rescue 365 days of the year and currently we have over 100 cats, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and reptiles in our care looking for new homes. It costs £330,000 a year to run the branch and we have to generate the income ourselves. We have four charity shops that provide two thirds of our income, but they can only do it with public support. So if you have unwanted Christmas presents or you are having a spring clean, please get in touch and

RHS Gardens Bridgewater: Masterplans Released In April 2016 The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) revealed the masterplan for the new RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford. World-class landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, was appointed to create the plan which will bring back to life the lost historic grounds at Worsley New Hall. Key elements of the aspirational horticultural masterplan include: An entrance garden laid out like a web and planted as a perennial meadow A new lake which anchors the new visitor building within the landscape A water garden of interlocking streams and rocky waterfalls The reconstruction of the historic walled garden, to include a therapeutic garden, vegetable garden and flower garden A new Learning Centre

In January 2017, following extensive consultation with the community and partners including planning consultants, educational bodies, charities and community organisations and landscape architects, the proposed plans for RHS Garden Bridgewater, the RHS’s fifth garden, were submitted for planning permission to Salford City Council. The proposals include designs for a new Welcome Building at the 154-acre site, provided by architects Hodder+Partners. They were invited to design a world class visitor centre which will provide a gateway to the gardens, as well as designs for the reuse of existing buildings for catering and retail purposes. Other material featured in the planning submission includes garden designs by landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, who produced the master plan for the site. Here are just a few of the artists’ impressions submitted with the plans.

On the surface Emmaus Salford is a community for formerly homeless men and women providing them food, warmth, support and safety in exchange for work... but underneath the surface Emmaus provides much more. The most important thing Emmaus is able to provide for companions, our formerly homeless residents, is opportunities and it's through these that the companions are able to grow, build their confidence and a foundation for their future. The money the companions raise through their work in our social enterprises doesn't just sustain their home here at Emmaus Salford; it also goes towards courses and other expenses so they are able to secure the job they want. Companions also recognise there are many people in Salford who are far worse off than themselves

and they volunteer in the local community wherever and whenever they can, from helping the elderly maintain their home to dressing up as Santa and his elves to help raise money for local children. Because we are able to provide these opportunities, we hope to help end the vicious cycle that many homeless people can get stuck in, becoming homeless several times before being able to find a place they can call a home and live life becoming active hardworking members of society. There are various ways you can help... by shopping with us, donating items we can sell in our stores or by telling your friends and family about us. Call us on 0161 737 8279 or pop into our stores in Salford on Fitzwarren Street (M6 5RQ) or Seaford Road (M6 6EP). www.emmaus.org.uk/salford

OUR 1ST YEAR ANNIVERSARY Home Instead Senior Care, Salford celebrated their first-year anniversary on the 1st February 2017 and plans are afoot to celebrate with our Clients and CAREGivers. Cake, chocolate, flowers and balloons spring to mind! Susan Robinson, Co-Founder of Home Instead Senior Care, Salford explains: “The welcome we have had within Salford has been quite overwhelming. It is such a pleasure to be able to offer tip top, quality care. Our Clients’ report that they are extremely happy with the help and support we offer and our CAREGivers say that they find working for Home Instead very enjoyable. Friendships have been, and are being forged and interesting conversations are taking place gardening, education, politics, Ofsted, CQC, teaching, societal changes, world-wide travel, importance of driving, army stories, war stories, grandchildren tales, painting, embroidery and the Camino Pilgrim Trail - to name just a few topics being discussed! We are looking forward to celebrating our first anniversary!” According to Michelle Corcoran, Registered Care Manager at Home Instead Salford, one question she is frequently asked is “What makes Home Instead different to other care companies?’” Michelle explained that she is always delighted to answer this question as her entire career has been in the care sector. Michelle continues:

“The homecare.co.uk Top 10 Agency Awards 2016 highlights the most recommended agencies in each region of the UK. Home Instead Senior Care won 44 out of 110 awards which really says it all.” Michelle lists some of the notable differences:

Continuity of care Minimum calls of one hour Client and CAREGivers – personalities are matched – friendships are developed. Specified visit times are adhered to as far as possible. Free consultation to discuss requirements - if we are unable to help we are happy and willing to signpost. Michelle continues: “Our non-medical care covers many activities which include: companionship, home help and personal care services. Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, respite, convalescence, home from hospital, hospice and end of life care. We are always looking for exceptional CAREGivers who have just a few hours a week to spare (or more) to join our ever expanding team.” If you would like to know more about our care services or you would like more information about being a CAREGiver please do not hesitate to telephone, email or just call into our offices to say hello. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) enables you to give legal authority to a person or a number of people to act on your behalf in handling your property and financial affairs and/or your health and welfare decisions if you lose the mental capacity to do so.

If you do lose your mental capacity, your financial assets will be frozen and your family will be unable to continue to deal with these without making a costly and time consuming application to the Court of Protection. They will also be unable to make decisions about your health and welfare. This is why it is so important to have Lasting Powers of Attorneys in place.

Queen Victoria Arrives in Worsley Queen Victoria was the first monarch of the House of Brunswick and the first Queen of England to set foot in Manchester. In fact, hers was the first royal visit to the town for 234 years - a visit which was later said to be "unprecedented in the history of the great manufacturing borough of Manchester." It was in August 1617 that James I paid the last royal visit. In his progress through Lancashire, he came to the town and attended divine service at the Collegiate Church (now Manchester Cathedral). Then, suddenly, on 16 August 1851, The Manchester Examiner and Times announced the intention of the Queen to visit Salford and Manchester. This created a fever of anticipation, and preparations were made in Patricroft, Worsley, and Manchester for the royal visit. Once the news of the Queen’s visit had been announced, the two adjoining boroughs reacted with great industry and purpose to mark the occasion, with the grandest arrangements ever seen for a royal visit. This brief summary shows the tremendous energy and enthusiasm that was shown by all the respective organisations and committees prior to the royal visit. Indeed, they only had 54 days to prepare! The Manchester Examiner and Times listed the wide variety of activities that were taking place: Numerous ceremonial arches were being erected. The pavilion at Peel Park was being prepared. The hall of the Exchange was being decorated. Fountains were being placed in the pond at the Infirmary on Piccadilly. Gas-fitters were busy everywhere (even with increased wages!) Flag staffs were being made and erected on public buildings. 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The Arrival Her Majesty arrived on Thursday 9th October, though the day did not start auspiciously. A great deal of time and money had been spent on the preparations, but the weather refused to join in the celebrations. It prevented many testimonials of loyalty and affection to the monarch from being seen to their best advantage; but, nevertheless, this did not deter thousands of people from assembling along the route to witness the royal progress from the railway station at Patricroft to the New Hall in Worsley. The Queen had left Liverpool that afternoon and journeyed to Patricroft by train. The royal party arrived shortly before 4.30pm and the plan was for the party to travel from there to Worsley New Hall on the canal, on barges specifically commissioned by the Earl of Ellesmere. A corridor was specially built for the Queen to walk through, from the platform to the canal bank. There she embarked on the first boat with Prince Albert and the Countess of Ellesmere. The tow rope on her craft snapped and a new one was fitted, but a horse pulling the second barge was spooked by the roar of the crowd and slipped into the canal. The animal was rescued and was reattached to the boat. On arriving near the Hall, the Queen alighted at a new landing stage and finished the journey to the Hall by carriage. After some refreshment, she felt much restored and attended the dinner party hosted by the Earl. After the dinner, the party was joined by James Nasmyth, who greatly impressed the Queen with his inventions and his map of the moon. A piece of music - the Ellesmere Polka - had been composed by Heinrich Blümer and was played for her Majesty, possibly that night. Many notable and local dignitaries attended the dinner, including the Duke of Wellington. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Local History

A ticket for the Royal Regatta “Arrival of her Majesty at Worsley”: An illustration from the The Illustrated London News

The day started much brighter on Friday 10th October. This was the day when the Queen was to travel to Salford and Manchester, to receive a loyal address from the respective mayors and town councillors. She first travelled to Peel Park where 80,000 children from local Sunday Schools welcomed her, accompanied by 3- 4,000 ministers and teachers. From there, she moved to Manchester, driving between the massed ranks and grandstands of thousands of people, many of whom had come by train from outlying towns and villages. Having made a royal progress through the streets of Manchester, she received the mayor's address in the Royal Exchange and immediately knighted the mayor. Arriving back in Worsley by 2pm, she had lunch and then, at 4pm, left the Hall on foot to visit the parish church of St. Mark, walking through the church and admiring its architecture and stained glass windows and the local area. Outside, she was again greeted by enthusiastic crowds and spent two hours strolling through the woods and surrounding areas of interest. Another dinner followed that evening, and this time they were joined by William E. Staite, patentee of the arc-light, who demonstrated the power of this form of illumination. On Saturday 11th October, the Queen was regaled by a small singing group, performing a matinale at 8am. This was followed by the presentation of an address from the clergy, children and teachers of the Sunday schools and other schools of Worsley and its neighbourhood. 1,400 children, in massed ranks, joined St. Vincent Beechey (Incumbent of St. Mark's) on the lawn in front of the Hall. The Queen was delighted to see "so many scholars together under instruction." Prince Albert

returned from a visit to Bolton at 11am and the royal party assembled to depart the Hall for London. There were numerous articles and notes of praise for the wonderful reception given at Worsley, which were nicely summarised by this letter from the Duke of Wellington to a friend: "I have been at the Reception of the Queen at many of the great Noblemen's Houses, and I have received Her Majesty myself. But I have never witnessed arrangements more perfect or handsomer than those made here." (Worsley Hall, Friday 10th October, to Mrs. Jones). The Queen herself was mightily impressed by the reception given by the people of this area, as she wrote in her journal: "There are 400,000 inhabitants in Manchester and everyone says that in no other town could one depend so entirely upon the orderly and quiet behaviour of the people, as there; they have only to be told what ought to be done and it was sure to be executed."

Written by Paul Speakman (Summarised from The Queen Cometh. Copies available at £5 from Paul on 07746 467879). THE QUEEN COMETH - this book tells of Queen Victoria's visit to the area in October 1851. Drawing on contemporary materials, it relates in fine detail her visit over three days. Evidence is taken from Queen Victoria's journals and the Duke of Wellington's correspondence with a Mrs. Jones. The reader will meet Queen Victoria, the Duke of Wellington, the Earl of Ellesmere and the Rev. St.Vincent Beechey - and also Zachariah Drakeley, Ann Rigby and Mary Pearson.
