MANCHESTER MIDNIGHT WALK
...will you BEE there? Hospice Chief Executive Eamonn O’Neal with actress Sally Lindsay at last year’s Manchester Midnight Walk
The streets of Manchester will be a hive of activity this April as thousands of local people – and bees – take on a 10km moonlit challenge in support of a local charity. St Ann’s Hospice’s flagship fundraising event, the sponsored Manchester Midnight Walk, is back for its thirteenth year, and will take place on Friday 26th April. The event starts and finishes at the beautiful Manchester Cathedral, and this year walk organisers are encouraging as many people as possible to embrace its bee theme. Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s explained: “The Manchester Midnight Walk has pulled in crowds every year since it began and it has a real party atmosphere. Every year, many participants come along in fancy dress, and we’re encouraging that again this year too, by inviting people to come along as bees.

The Midnight Walk is famous for its yellow and black colour theme, so it seems fitting to have as many bees as possible buzzing around the city centre to raise money for our patients, and celebrate St Ann’s as a Greater Manchester charity. Don’t worry if fancy dress isn’t your thing, please do still come along and join us – we’d love to see as many people there as possible.” The walk starts at midnight, and participants will take on a 10km loop which starts and ends at Manchester Cathedral. Warm up entertainment starts at 9pm, with music, disco and refreshments available before the walk begins. Interested walkers can sign up to take part in the 10km moonlit stroll now, by visiting the website www.mmwalk.org.uk or calling 0161 498 3631. A special early bird rate is available for keen walkers who book their place early.

RSPCA Manchester & Salford
Celebrating 55 Years! been transferred to specialist centres, networked out amongst other branches or sadly been too unwell to find new homes). Not many people know that each branch of the RSPCA is a separately registered charity and is responsible for raising money to fund their animal rehoming work. The RSPCA Manchester & Salford branch is celebrating 55 years as a registered charity. The branch originally established the RSPCA animal hospital in Weaste, but when funds ran out in the early 1990s it was taken on by the national RSPCA. It took some years for the branch to get back on its feet, as finances remained poor, but for the past 11 years the branch has been able to focus on supporting the national RSPCA inspectorate by taking in the animals they have rescued from neglect, cruelty and abandonment.
In December the branch hosted a big birthday bash for its staff, volunteers and supporters to mark the occasion and give thanks to their dedication and commitment to the charity. The branch hopes that it will be able to help many more animals in need and would like to thank the community for its continued support. In 2015 Worsley Gin’s founder and MD Ned set out on a mission to create a luxury Gin that was without compromise on quality, cost, design or craftsmanship. His vision was to combine inspiration from the beautiful village of Worsley, the quality and detail of a bygone age and a state of the art single distillation process. 18 months later, after his adventure of discovery, sampling over 200 variations of the recipe to get it just right, he had accomplished his mission. To help with bringing the brand to life, Creative Director Pamela joined the company and together in 2017, they introduced Worsley Gin to the market.
“Our journey into brewing started many years ago. As kids, we’d help our dad make homebrew in the cellar of our family home. Years later, Keith spent time in Oslo and was inspired by the amazing craft beer scene. We decided to take what we had learned from our dad, add our skills and combine it all together. The result was SEVEN BRO7HERS, a brewery dedicated to brewing the best beer for everyone. Ellesmere In America In 1903, Lady Alice Egerton (Countess of Strafford, died 1928), youngest daughter of the First Earl of Ellesmere, edited her father's personal reminiscences of the Duke of Wellington. She was encouraged to write, as an introduction, her own memoir (55 pages) of her father. On pages 50-51 of this, she wrote a paragraph about his love of foreign travel, the last undertaking being a visit to America and Canada in the summer of 1853. “This last journey was undertaken at the instance of the Government of the day, who wished to send a representative of this country to the opening of the New York Exhibition in 1853.” This was to be a replica of the event held in London, though on a much smaller scale. The formal opening of the exhibition was delayed from early May to mid July, and offered an opportunity to visit Philadelphia, and subsequently Niagara, Montreal, and Quebec, and, after the ceremonies of the opening were over, to Boston. “Much hospitality was shown us during the whole of that tour, chiefly and notably by Lord Elgin, then Governor-General, and Mr Prescott, the delightful historian, whose works are as charming as he was himself. Among those who accompanied my father and his family were the late Prince Victor of Hohenlohe, then a sub-lieutenant in the Navy, and the late Lord Acton.” The Earl was placed at the head of a delegation of five other members of this Royal Commission. each of the senior members had to write a report upon their findings. The Earl wrote a summary report, though he did mention the Fine Arts aspect of the exhibition. As a Commissioner of the London Crystal Palace fair in 1851, he was very well placed to comment on the success or otherwise of the New York fair. The presence of this party in New York and the other cities caused a great stir of excitement amongst the local glitterati and academics. He was invited to attend many society functions, and wherever he and his family went, they were greeted by admiring groups of people. He was invited to attend the annual celebration of the arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Mass., but was unable to go. He was elected an honorary member of the Shakespeare Society on Long Island and received an honorary LL.D. degree at Harvard. He was often affected by gout and rheumatism, which severely hampered some of his travels and appearances. He spent some of his time towards the end of his trip in a very diplomatic rôle, helping to smooth ill-feeling between the fishermen of Canada and the United States, over fishing rights. Much of how he spent his time there has come from local and national newspapers in America, from the memoirs of some of the academics, and from the journals of Sir (later Lord) John Dalberg Acton. The story of this, his last overseas visit, will be the subject of a new book to be published in Spring 2019.

After a cold January, it should start to warm up as the days get longer. So what should we do to prepare for spring? Prepare Your Beds...
Now is the time to remove any weeds before they have a chance to start their vigorous spring growth. They may look small and limp but, if you leave them they will soon grow and overpower your tiny seedlings. Rake over your beds and break up any surface lumps, ready for planting your new crops when the weather gets a bit warmer. Late winter is also the time to apply conditioners to the soil such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as they need time to be absorbed and spread evenly throughout the soil. If you have fruit bushes or trees, spindly or dead shoots should be pruned to encourage new and healthy growth. If you potted sweet pea seeds in dry compost before Christmas, give them some water now as they will react to the increasing levels of light and warmer days. Don’t overdo it as too much water will be even worse than too little - ‘an insufficiency of neglect’ is a gardeners worst enemy! It is tempting to stay inside and warm at this time of year but, if you feel able, take a few minutes to turn your compost heap, it will encourage the rotting process. If you don’t fancy being outside, give your garden tools a clean and oil any moving parts instead of waiting only to find some of them need urgent care when you need them to be operational. Sowing and Planting...
In February, buy all your seed potatoes and start chitting! You can plant shallots and garlic straight into well-draining soil in a sunny spot. You could sow broad beans outside, brussel sprouts under glass and Lettuces indoors. In March, as it starts to warm up, sowing and planting outdoors can start properly! Plant first early potatoes, shallots and garlic by the end of the month. Bare-root fruit trees and bushes should be planted by now. Broccoli, cabbages, brussel sprouts and other brassicas can be sown outdoors. Root vegetables outside, but under cloches or frames. Indoors you can sow aubergines, chillies and peppers. 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Allotment News... Tindall Street, Eccles: We are waiting for
a decision on whether a bid for grant funding has been successful. If it is then a new pergola will be built to provide a meeting and discussion place adjacent to the existing log cabin. We received a donation of six secondhand wooden raised beds which are to be refurbished and placed around the community area. Hilton Lane, Walkden: The City Council has agreed that the land allocated for allotments, when Bellway build their new housing estate, will remain in Council ownership and a 25 year self-management will be granted to an appointed new committee. Poorlots, Irlam: We are still awaiting a date for the Public Enquiry into the mistaken registration of land at this site as Common land. This complex issue has taken over 15 years of investigation and negotiation to bring it to the point of public consideration. It is hoped to reach a conclusion during 2019! Former Swinton Sewage Works: This is a complex site with many and varied interested parties requiring consideration. Hopefully, progress will be made towards re-establishing the allotments. We are keeping the waiting list under review.
